Definitively on the top 3 "technical" lens reviewers on youtube, IMO - sitting right next to Chris Frost and Gerald Undone. It took me a while to trust all of your tests, but now I think you're very consistent and objective. Kudos to you, and thank you!

That's very fine company - thank you!

Dustin's my fave. Chris is great, too, but his reviews are slightly more anecdotal in my opinion, like he gets you to understand how it will feel like shooting it, whereas Dustin will be more technical and explain why you will feel the things you will experience. As for Gerald, when he does review a lens, you know he'll do a great job, but the problem is, he doesn't review that many lenses.

With the ZV-E10 coming out, I'm suddenly interested in the Sony APS-C system again, for doing long-form tripod-mounted videos with, and I think this will be the only lens I need for it. And as much as I love my R6 for both photo and video, it's really not ideal for that particular kind of setting. Thanks for your review! I will be sure to use your links when I am ready to buy.

This one looks amazing! Though I'm not sure if I'll get it over the Samyang 12mm, just because it's so expensive and it has a slightly narrower aperture. Thanks for the great review!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
Fair enough. If a prime can cover your needs, the Samyang is a nice option.

I originally purchased the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f2 AF (because of the price) and was extremely disappointed in it. It’s autofocus was not very reliable, the lens flare hazing was awful, and the lens hood was very cheaply made. Sold that off and recently purchased the Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 and couldn’t be happier. If it had VC it would be perfect! Will be selling off my Sony 10-18mm f4 soon.

Currently I use in my Sony a6600 a Tokina 11-16 II (canon) with mc11 adapter. In terms of image quality, will the Tamron be better? I would like to go to tamron for issues of being a native lens and weight. I loved the review, very complete, thanks Dustin for offering these quality videos.

Yes, you will find the Tamron a better lens overall.

Thank you for telling me this might not be a good choice for me while still struggling with the flare of my samyang 12mm! For landscape I think Sony 10-18mm might be a better option while you can stop down and enjoy it's great coating! Sir I wish you consider reviewing that lens to assure me I can rely on it's performance, you are the one we all trust!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
I don't think the 10-18mm is nearly as good as this one optically, though
@networm64
@networm64 3 года назад
@@DustinAbbottTWI I kindda agree, but as I have seen in many reviews it's performance is so different from copy to copy! Anyway it has oss and is a third lighter which would be appreciated on the video work and gimbal. But I'm still curious to see how a good copy of it can holds up for landscape work , specially cause it gives a 12mm coverage on ff!!!

Great job, creating so much quality content. It's clearly better than the Sony 10-18 for the IQ and the fact it is a f2.8 instead of f4. But the Sony can still be useful in some specific cases: 1) the OSS means that it could probably be used as a "vlogging" camera, not a lot of APS-C cameras have IBIS and even then, the IBIS is good for still but lacking for video, 2) the image circle is surprisingly quite large and even fills the full frame area at some focal lengths, and 3) obviously the 10mm vs 11mm.

Thanks for the kind words, but unfortunately I'm not a Nikon guy. I've never reviewed Nikon, and have no interest in having to learn/add yet another system. This isn't my full time job.

It would be nice if you could make updates to your older reviews. For example, the dust issue on the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8. Do you still have that copy you had reviewed? Is it in good condition? Did you deal with any dust in the front element of the lens?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
Hi there, I will occasionally do long term reviews, but only for lenses that I actually own. Most of what I review (like the Sigma you mention) are long term loaners.

This review was done on the a6400, but I no longer have the lens. I showed you up close autofocus, however, so a Vlog demonstration wouldn't be any different.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I'm wondering how the lack of stabilization would make this not ideal for vlogging on the a6400. Really tempted to get get but lack of stabilization is a bit of a concern since I primarily shoot video

Can you make the image & video comparisons between this lens and Samyang 12mm? I’m tempted by Samyang for it’s cheaper price and wider aperture. But I don’t know if I’ll be compromising in quality by going with Samyang or not.

My tests are pretty standardized - if you look at the reviews from both, you can draw a pretty easy conclusion on image quality

Another great detailed review! I have the Tamaron 17-70 and am thinking of adding the Sony 70-350 for true telephoto (525mm full frame). I am discovering that I use the entire focal range of the 17-70mm focal length for landscape, portraits and street work, but really need the added zoom range for wildlife and sports. Would this lens be a worthwhile investment considering I want to get into astrophotography and video?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
Those three lenses would give you a pretty amazing kit covering from very wide to deep telephoto - all with excellent image quality.
@philipgardiner2003

@@DustinAbbottTWI Cool! Thx. What are your thoughts on getting the Tamaron 150-500 instead of the Sony 70-350? At $1400, I don't know if I want to spend that right now but the longer telephoto interests me. But then I would have a gap in overage from 70mm-150mm. Still trying to figure it all out I guess.

It is not linear, so if you keep a steady speed, yes, but if your speed changes, the throw also changes.
