Bought and I'm really enjoying it. For 199.00 right now, it's an incredible deal. Your up close shots helped convince me it'd be a worthwhile purchase. I've had the Samyang 35mm 2.8 which is good, but optically speaking this is better. Really nice lens if you don't need the fastest AF.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
Fair points. The AF betrays an otherwise excellent lens, but not everyone needs flawless AF, and that's a lot of lens optically for $200.
@marvoski547
@marvoski547 3 года назад
These two were what I was comparing too! I opted for Tamron because of the better weather seal and semi Macro abilities. I think it’s worth it with those two points alone.

@@marvoski547 I'm still using mine a lot and picked up the 24mm 2.8 as well. I"m shocked at just how good the optics are. Cheers.

I noticed that the Tamron 24mm f2.8 and the 35mm f2.8 have slightly different minimum focus distance, albeit the same magnification ratio. Which one of these would produce bigger and better bokeh?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI Год назад
In theory, they should be the same by the time you get to that MFD. The 35mm will produce nicer bokeh in other situations, however, due to a bit more compression.

Very impressed by the IQ of this lens! Macro capability ( and price!) aside , is there any reason to switch from the older Sony /Zeiss 35mm F2.8 which a lot of people may already own in their kits?
@DustinAbbottTWI

Chris and Jordan from DPReview did a comparison between the two lenses that I watched. They gave the Tamron the overall win.

Hello Dustin, I am almost decided to get the TAmron 35f2.8, but a bit concerned by the AF speed. I currently own a Samyang 45f1.8 and am quite OK with the AF speed for my way of shooting. I mainly shoot street/travel/landscape/astro, thus I am certainly not looking after a speed monster . Could you let me know if, to your opinion, the Tamron is really significantly slower than the Samyang for non-action photography? Thanks for your very intructive reviews francis
@DustinAbbottTWI

It is slower, but not night and day slower. I wouldn't predict any issues for your shooting priorities.

So, it’s passable for video autofocus? I’m between this one and the Sony FE 35mm 1.8. I would prefer this cheaper lens. But I use it as well for video.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks, yeah, but I prefer the price of the Tamron. I just order it. It’s half the price of the Sony. I think the Sony is overpriced, they should have released it $100 USD cheaper. Great review by the way!

Great video. But I would like to know your opinion: which one is the sharpest at the edge of the frame, Tamron 35/2,8, Samyang 45/1,8 or Samyang 35/1,8? AF speed, to me, is not so important.

Hi Dustin, I've got a bit of an odd question, how does this compare to the Samyang 35mm and the two kit lenses from Sony in terms of Image Quality?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
I would say the two primes are fairly close at equivalent apertures. Both are definitely better than the 28-70mm, but the newer lens is a harder comparison. It's quite sharp, but so different in kind from these lenses.

Nice review, also saw your review about Samyang 35 1.8. Really confused between these two.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 года назад
I can understand. They both have strengths. I probably would lean towards the Samyang as a more complete lens (much better autofocus, for example), but the Tamron has a great price and the added bonus of the magnification.

Great review. I have A6000 and Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS. I want to add a macro lens to my set. Instead of buying Sony 30mm macro, I plan to buy sigma 56mm f1.4 and tamron 35mm f2.8 and sell sony 35mm f1.8 OSS. What do u think about that?

13:55 Yes, I wonder if they could modify this in a firmware update .. if the AF wouldn't re-adjust all the time on a static subject, it would be a lot more reliable/trustworthy in video. That is, in my opinion, a bigger problem than the clicking itself. For example, Sony's old 50/1.8 is not silent at all, too, but it isn't as jumpy in such a situation.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 месяца назад
I suspect that AF is more stable at this point, though firmware updates can't make the quality of the focus motor smoother.

In short, not ideal for action photography and video, but fine for everything else. Tbh, after I saw one shot you showed in Part 1, of a leaf against the sun, I needed no more persuasion. It's crazy how good the lenses are nowadays. Even sub 400 ones like this Tamron.

I would buy this lens but I wish it wasn't so bulbus. I want a low key walk around lens with close minimum focus distance. Guess I'll wait for them to maybe do a refresh closer to the Zeiss and Rokinon sizes or hopefully Sony refreshes the Zeiss 35 2.8 in the form of those small G lenses on the next A7Cii release...

Hi Dustin, thank you for the great review as usual. I have also watched your review of the Sony 55mm f1.8, which I own. I am contemplating replacing the 55mm with this 35mm lens or the Sony 24 f1.4 GM. Another option is to just get the 24GM/Tamron 35mm to go with the 55mm. Would appreciate your views of the Tamron 35mm f2.8 vs Sony 55mm f1.8.
@DustinAbbottTWI

If you want a lens more similar to Sony in performance, consider too the Samyang/Rokinon 45mm F1.8. I'm a fan of that little lens. The Tamron is a good choice if you don't mind the autofocus quirks I've detailed. It's a very sharp lens.

Merci Dustin. Thanks Dustin. A subject not addressed with this 35mm 2.8 is waterproofing. After a 1s drop in the seaside, result = Wet sand is easy to remove from the front. The water did not enter the optics. But there is no seal towards the camera !!! and there the water got in, fortunately not long enough to destroy the Sony A7r3 ... So if it is "waterproof" it does not protect the camera which has a higher value. We cannot ask you Dustin to test the lens in immersion ...
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
None of these lensmakers use the term "waterproof", as no lens is designed to be submerged. They have "weather resistance" or "weather sealing" that is more designed to keep sealed during rain...not immersion.

a perfect walkaround, the samyang 451.8 is nice 2 but the quality control is the major issue, tamron win at the macro
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 года назад
I agree with the outer two statements, though I've seen nothing to indicate that quality control is an issue with the Samyang. I've reviewed a lot of great Samyang lenses with little to indicate there's a significant quality control issue.

Good lens, especially for $ 350. Previously, lenses were made with aperture of f2.5, or f1.7. These are interesting decisions why they don’t do it now. Imagine that this lens would have been with aperture of f2.5, not f2.8 - the difference is not great, but still it would have been better, more interesting. And the cost could remain at about $ 350.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 года назад
I agree that I would have found the lens a bit more exciting with a larger maximum aperture personally.
@gitithadani

I have had access to a lot of 35mm lenses from the film era. The canon fl 35/2.5 lens has an mfd of 40cms - the earlier faster rangefinder lenses have upto 1 meter mfd - the later fdn 35/2 is about 30. Takumar35/2 I think around 45cms - zeiss 30+. The mir 35/2 is again 30cms so the best mfd at 1.8 is the new sony at about 22cms (the new canon r lens has 17cms vs the tamron at 15). The sigma 1.2 is also 30mms & weighs over 1kilo. The pancake samyang is 35mms. In the lightweight category I think the best contenders are the tamron vs the sony 1.8 & the choice depends on faster aperture vs macro, AF motors, form factor & budget.
