It comes as no surprise that you had positive results with this lens Joe. Seems it has been very well recieved. I know everybody is talking about focus breathing but the Tamron offsets that somewhat with its close focusing capability. If I didn't already own Nikons VR2 70 -200 f2.8 I absolutely would have purchased this Tamron despite me saying I would stick to OEM Nikkor lenses only lol. So impressed am I with this Tamron I will await their eventual 24 - 70 f2.8 G2 before buying the Nikkor. Thanks for your excellent review, I hope it gives you many years of sterling service 😃
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
Thank you Dunny. Yea I was skeptical at first. But I have never had any issues with Tamron lenses when it comes to focusing. They were just not always the best optically IMHO. At least the older ones. There were a few that were optically good for the price. But, you know. You need the best today, so it holds up to higher and higher MP demands in the future. Which means more years of usage. The previous version was one of those that was good for the price, but not to the point were I would want it over the Canon equivalent. So when Tamron updated it and it was going to be even cheaper. It caught my eye and I simply had to try it. So I got it soon as I got into Kuala Lumpur and tried it out the next day. Was simply pleased with the results and I still am. Speaking of the 24-70 F/2.8 G2. The current model is actually very good, I just am not keen on the build quality. If they do update it to G2, which they likely will in about a year IMHO. I am fairly sure I will get it. I already have a lens for that focal range. But a f/2.8 and IS will really be helpful for event and weddings. BTW, got my 70D sent back to Canon, hopefully they get it working correctly this time. I may actually stick with APS-C since I am happy with the results from this lens. May also get the new Tamron 10-24mm in time. My EFS 10-22mm is good. But its showing its age and the rubber on the focus ring is starting to get sticky..
@dunnymonster
@dunnymonster 7 лет назад
Joe's Photo & Video Channel Yeah the G1 Tamron recieved pretty good reviews but comparing it to the Nikkor VR2, despite its much higher price, I felt paying the extra was fully justified. If I was in that same position right now however the G2 would be a no brainer, I definately couldn't afford Nikons latest 70 -200 😃 I have the version 1 of the Tamron 10 - 24 and used it a lot particularly for architectural photography. It's a decent lens but it's not stunning towards the edges ( which given a 10mm focal should come as no surprise ) and of course has no VC. I'm sure the newer version will improve on it considerably, however any replacement I get for it will have to be full frame compatible. I'm still sticking to my mantra of only buying full frame lenses ( I added the awesome Nikkor 200 - 500 f5.6 a few days ago ) with a view to adding a full frame body ( second hand most likely ) at some point. I'm doing more studio type strobe portraiture and with only a small space to work in my 85mm f1.8 on my D7200 APSC body is about as long as I can use before I run out of space lol. Plus I'll get the true field of view out of my wider lenses. I have the Tamron 18 to 50 f2.8 but ideally I need the 24 - 70 to really complete my focal f2.8 range. The newer VR Nikkor is horrendously expensive whilst the non VR has been around a while but is considered sharper. As usual I want my cake and eat it, I want the better optics but I also would like VR too, so its best I await Tamrons potential offering before putting my cash down. Hopefully it will be fairly soon. In the meantime I hope to add Tamrons 15 - 30 f2.8 as my next major lens purchase 😃 My shopping list gets bigger as my wallet gets thinner sadly lol

I bought the Tamron 15-30 last year and love it. I have been considering this 70-200 and I am happy I did not buy the previous version. I would like to find more of a feel for filming with this lens. Filming a documentary, short films, etc. Do you have feedback on that?

Thank you. When I spoke of calibrating the lens. In actuality I am calibrating the cameras focusing system to the lens. To help correct any front or back focusing issues. Semi-Pro and Pro DSLR cameras have this ability called MFA or Micro Focusing Adjustments.

I just picked up my 80D with a 18-135mm kit lens and so far so good. I'm upgrading from a Canon Rebel XS and wow what a difference. This Tamron lens is on my radar but my main reason for wanting this lens is to shoot my Daughter dancing, she'll be in low light with theater lighting and fast action...do you think this will make a good combo. Thanks for the review and the input.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 6 лет назад
Depends on the distance you will be from your daughter. If you find yourself needing those distances with your kit lens, then yea it would be. It has one of the best optical stabilization systems on the market and is razor sharp even at f/2.8. Its hard to go wrong with this lens.

Great Video! I have an APS-C Body (Nikon D5300) and I'm struggling between the Tamron G2 which performs well even on a Crop sensor Body or the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 Art which is built for Crop Sensor Bodies :( It's like Decent Sharpness+Longer Reach(Crop Factor:1.5x)+Beastly IS vs. Extremely Sharp+Shorter but Decent Reach+No IS+Faster Opening Aperture. Probably will not upgrade my APS-C Body in 2-3 Years. Would appreciate any advice in my situation :) Thank you very much for your time!

All lenses need some micro adjustments. But yes I did micro adjust this lens a little. It wasn't bad. But like I said, all lenses need micro focus adjustments (MFA) even if they are made by Canon, Nikon, or anyone else.

Thanks, yes, I micro adjust all my lenses, I just heard a few people say this one was pretty bad out of the box. I'm loving the reviews on this lens though and seriously considering purchasing it.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 6 лет назад
Its a roll of the dice to be honest. The worst lens out of the box I ever got was actually my Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens. For a prime it was way out of wack, It was front focusing pretty bad and I think I had to put a -9 or something like that to correct it.. I think this was is fine on one end, but needed something like 4 or 5 on the other.. Cant remember without sticking on my camera and checking.. :-)

Joe. Just a question but have you noticed the lens clicking while taking video? Not sure if it’s abnormal but I think it has to do with the autofocus. I don’t get the clicking with a canon IS STM lens which I’m wondering if that’s the reason they prefer those lenses for video recording.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 4 года назад
Canons STM lenses are much better and smoother for video. Its just the way they are designed. Even many of Canons older USM lenses click a little to a lot when auto focusing.

Hi Joe, I hope all is well. I'm not sure what tripod to buy for a Nikon D7200 and a Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 G2. I'm looking for a reliable and practical tripod. I stay away from a very expensive one. Also, what ball head is the best to go with the tripod. Please advise. Thanks in a million! :)

Get the best you can afford. I recommend anyone looking to buy a tripod, get a trusted brand and make sure that the suggested max weight limit of that tripod is twice that of your camera and lens combined.

Great review! I just want to ask if will you recommend this Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens over the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM. The price is so close, I will be using this on my canon 80d primarily for shooting video...Thanks from philippines:D
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
Hey Lloyd, yes I recommend the Tamron 70-200 G2 over the Canon EF 70-300L USM. The Tamron is so much sharper that you can still crop down tighter and still produce a sharper image. The Canon lens is just very old optical formula and just does not hold up to higher MP cameras out now. Hope this helps :-)

From your opinion if price was not an option would you prefer the Canon native lens with the same features or this one ?
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
Well to be honest, I am not a huge fan of the off-white lens color of the Canons. It tends to stick out and attract the wrong attention. Which is something you really do not want when traveling. But IMHO the IS on the Tamron is class leading. If price was not an option and I had both in front of me to test out. I would say it was more of a tie. On one hand the Canon offering that warm fuzzy feeling that it will always be %110 compatible with future Canon cameras. Then the Tamron, which actually just slightly out performs the Canon.. Hope this helps.

Joe's Photo & Video Channel thanks for the reply. I've been looking to get either one. I would like the canon (but I would have to save up and know I mean business if I get this one), but I hear good things about this tamron lens. I have the 18-400mm ultra zoom and love it. I use it as my go to when I'm just out and about, it's very versatile. So I'm still bent on which one.

How is the autofocus on the 80D working with this lens? Is is possible to shoot wildlife accuratly?
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
I mention the accuracy percentage in the video. Its insanely good. Likely one of the best I have ever seen on a 3rd party lens. But my test are with static shots and not stuff running around as I do not shoot that much wildlife and I dislike sports.

Why you did not buy Sigma 50-100 f1.8 for 80D. I own canon 80D. Actually i am looking for telephoto wide apeture lense. On my wish list i have sigma 50-100 f1.8 and tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2. Not decided yet. Wht do you prefer?
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 6 лет назад
I have had bad luck with Sigma Art Lenses not focusing correctly for one and the 50-100 Art has no image stabilization. Now myself I personally find 100mm to short for portraits also. Plus the Tamron can be used on full frame bodies, where the Sigma limits you to APS-C only. That said, many others that have also tested the Sigma 50-100mm Art have stated that the auto focus isnt very accurate even on a good copy of the lens. When you take all that into account its why I prefer and recommend the Tamron 70-200mm G2. I use this lens all the time and its a fantastic lens and one of my all time favorites. Hope this helps.

What is better lens for Canon 80D: Sigma 50-100mm Art or this lens? I am kinda leaning towards Sigma 50-100mm Art, but lack of IS seems too risky. What do you think?
@Clarkejt112
@Clarkejt112 4 года назад
S. Ghim get the tamron 70-200. I had the sigma 50-100 on a Nikon d500 and had nothing but focus issues and you have to have extremely fast shutter speeds with lack of IS. When all comes together it’s the sharpest lens I e ever used but 90% of the time I prefer my tamron 70-200 2.8

Hi like your videos I am new at this I have a daughter that does ALL-STAR Cheer and is mainly all indoors I bought a Canon Rebel T3i a few years a go but I cant really capture those once in a life time action shots most of them are a blurrrr.. Some one recommended the Canon EOS 80 D with a Canon - EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Standard Zoom Lens , but i have been seen this tamaron lens used a lot in sports altho all the videos have been outdoor what do you recommend that I can buy that will fit my purpose? Thanks..
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
Hey Leonardo, lets first start talking about the T3i. I bought that camera when it first came out and I actually still use it as my main video camera for static shots. However it is very limited on the ISO you can use and keep from having images with lots of noise in them. I would never use that camera for anything over ISO800. Another big issue is that the focusing system is extremely slow. Which I think you may have realized by now. Plus getting moving shots that are nor blurred takes more patience then most are willing to give. So yes without a doubt I would very much recommend the 80D. The focusing speed & accuracy is leaps and bound faster and better then the older T3i. Plus it also shoots 7 frames per second, has 45 all cross-type focusing points, the t3i for example only has 9 and they are not cross type. Now as far as lenses go. The Tamron is without a doubt a better option then the 24-105mm f/4 lens. The 24-105 is a great walk around outdoor lens. But the 24-105 is not a indoor lens. Plus at 105mm its a little soft and you would be wishing you had that little bit extra reach. So yea without a doubt the Tamron 70-200mm G2 lens is better choice, its faster and have 5 stops of image stabilization. Plus paired with the 80D you can feel safe enough to use ISO1600 and ISO3200 to keep your shutter speeds at a reasonable level and the lens is sharp at f/2.8 all the way from 70 to 200mm.. Hope this helps.
@therookiefisherman5234
@therookiefisherman5234 7 лет назад
Thank you for that advise yes it helps a lot , but my problem with the 70-200 might be that is a bit close due to the fact that I will be in front of the stage, usually these competitions run for 2 days and one of the 2 days I shoot the whole team meaning the stage from one end to the other end. I can see the 70 on my second day of shooting close ups if you like and send me your email I can send you pics of prior competitions so you could have an Idea of what I am talking about or maybe you all ready do!!

Hello Haoheng, yes I mentioned in the video I had to do a little MFA adjusting. But that is common with any lens. I also mentioned in the video that FoCal software reported my lens to focus accurately 99.5% of the time at 70mm and 98.5% at 200mm. if i remember correctly, you said in your 24-105L II video in the comments section, that 5D4 files are not sharp, and need to be tweaked in post, so would like to know if 5D3 / 5DsR or 6D or 1Dx2 produce better images comparatively ? . . . and in what ways do you expect an improvement in 6D mark 2 over 5D4 ? Thanks.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
The 5D4 files are not super sharp. This is a result of the Anti-Aliasing Filter. Which you need the AA filter to keep from having crazy coloring artifacts in your image around contrasting objects. Not just there to correct moire. The 5DSR has an additional filter that helps sharpen the image back up without using in camera sharping. When each camera is released, Canon attempts to fine tune the AA filter to best fit that sensor. Sometimes that means it is a little stronger then normal. Which in the case of the 5D4, it was stronger then normal. But may have had to be. So any file you export as RAW will have no sharpening applied in camera. And they all look soft. So all files have to be sharpened in post and each camera and lens combo (and type of photo your shooting) needs to have its own personal sharpening profile to get the best results. Hope this helps.
@chirag4

yes it helped a lot. Now, if 6D2 has the AA Filter intact on its sensor, which is most likely to be there, would you upgrade from 80D to 6D2 ? which Canon Fx body is an overall best buy of the three ? . . . 6D (mark2, digic 7) or 5DsR (dual-digic 6) / 5D4 (digic 6+) or 1Dx2 (dual-digic 6+, -3EV only) ? i guess, for Professionals, 1Dx2 is the no.1 choice as it is the only Canon body that has Spot Metering for all AF points, best RGB metering, best sensor (which is not repeated in any other body like 5D series, and what Nikon does, eg. D4 sensor was used in Df too). DxO says 5D4 has better sensor than 1Dx2 which is contrary to what Tony Northrup believes, that flagship model has 15-20% better image quality than the next lower model from the same company, and that is despite the fact that flagship body has AA Filter, which means it may not be as sharp as 5DsR but still better in other ways unknown to me. This is surprising even to me ? A camera without AA filter like 5DsR has 15% sharper files, so, how can 1Dx2 have sharper files than 5DsR ? this is complicated. Thanks.

This lens should not be named as 70-200 but 70-170 instead.... It is not 200M if you compare with Canon, Nikon or Sigma Lens.... If you check the background compression, u will be able to make the difference... The bokah is worse of all.... and for bokeh we buy 70-200 but.. it has pissed me off.

Many lenses have focus breathing issues. This lens is a 200mm when focused at infinity. Which is how all lenses are measured. Now at very close distance will breath back to about 170-ish mm. As far as Bokeh, it really like the out of focus areas produced by this lens. But that's personal taste. That said I really dont think many are going to find a lens this good at this price point. Sure the Canon is slightly better, but its not double the price better. So each their own..
