This video is part of the "HOW TO" videos from EPICKITES.COM
Learn what to do in case you get your kite tangled with some one else.
Also having your kites tangled in stronger winds (30 to 50 mph) can be very dangerous and harmful to the kiter(s). So please be careful when kiting in (30 to 50 mph) and make sure to talk to the other kiter when to release the bar together, because that might be the only safe solution in these strong winds.

great vid - after watching it was in Thailand and had my first tangle. Used your 'dont panic' approach to calm down the thai instructor i had tangled with - worked well. After he calmed down we untangled and went on our way. Cheers!!

As an IKO Level 2 instructor and kite school owner I tell you that this video is very dangerous for beginners! This is not the safest way to do it. People can get hurt really bad because this advice! It’s not safe to be grabbing on the lines while having 2 fully powered kites tangled to each other. Not at all. You can get into serious trouble while doing it. Also you can damage both gears. Of course that with time and experience we learn how to assess and act accordingly to each situation. This video fails to mention the proper use of your quick release and the self rescue. When you open your quick release you don’t necessarily loose your kite. Unless you don’t have a safety leash or if you also release your safety leash. Releasing your safety leash is your last resort when kiteboarding, not the quick release! Do not release your safety leash righ after opening your quick release. Please do open your quick release and wait for the kite to stop pulling before untangling kites and lines. Then you can get untangle.The truth is that nobody likes to open the quick release and then proceed to the self rescue. But this procedure is a MUST do for every beginner kiter and every kiter should know how to do it because one day it can save your life and your gear. Please learn how to SELF RESCUE everyone! And stay away from each other! Have fun and be safe.If you come to Oahu, Hawaii look up Kiteboarding Paradise Hawaii ;) ALOHA

It all depends of the tangle situation, but if both kites are pulling strong in opposite directions, lines will get under strong tension and it will take less than 30 secondes for a line to break. So if the situation is "bad", after 10 secondes i would generally release security just to save my lines. The kite that have the strongest tension will have it's lines break first. That's physics... So if it's possible, before releasing, get close to the other kiter and try to keep your lines parallel or kill the power of both kite by crashing kite in water. Nice video, tks Dimitri

Just so you know, the video was actually almost 16 minutes longs, but I was trying to keep it under 7 minutes in order to keep the audience interested. I had so many other footage on different situations but I took the executive decision to cut it down to 7 minutes and keep it short. So this video was designed to help the riders communicate with each other and stay calm while assessing the situation.

ha you caused some of that , dont kite to close to each other, dont creep up wind of other kites if its to close and you can avoid , take a different tack, dont show off and remember its only a race if the other kiter knows it first

We had some serious accidents on the beach because of not releasing the safety. Riders pulled away in deathloops, bystanders caught in lines, lines and kites ripped apart, etc. If one of the kites stays powered, the lines are like blades, posing a serious risk to people and gear around. My advice, at least on land, is to ALWAYS release the safeties of all the kites involved in a tangle. You all end up knitting a big mess, but it's better than getting injured. Don't panic but release the safety.
@epickites
@epickites 4 года назад
WRONG.... You can't just release the safety because you will put the other kiter in danger. So before you release the safety make sure the other kite knows what you are doing so he doesn't end up being stuck with 2 kites because you released your safety. A friend of mine died because of that. Someone else release the safety as soon as the kite got tangled and she end up with 2 kites in her hand.

@@epickites If the standard procedure is release the safety and EVERYONE does this standard procedure you never have problems. And no one needs to be sure the other one releases or not. These things can happen so fast, you don't have time to talk with the other guy.

@@nunogirao8097 there are situations where the QR is ineffective. even the safety leash one, for example if the bar got stuck in the harness.

The first time this happened to me was on an early body dragging lesson with the other student. He ditched his kite leaving me with both. No fun at all dragging towards the car park with 2 kites. I put my hand on the safety leash in case but did not want 2 bars going through the car park. Luckily an instructor was able to dive on the kite at the bottom of its loop. The second time successfully resolved by an experienced kiter using this method. The last time I tried this method and communication definitely helps. I gave my board to the other kiter whilst I attempted to untangle however my leash line had clipped through her lines so I had to undo my safety leash which seemed OK as still hooked in. Unfortunately my donkey dick had also been ripped off and I accidentally unhooked losing my kite. But as we had communicated she was able to pass me back my board for the long swim back so at least I had some buoyancy. Good video, the advice do not panic is vital then you can do whatever the better of the 2 kiters is capable of.

As an IKO instructor, I always teach my students that it is much safer to relase the chicken loop immediately, not the leash, just the chicken loop.That way the kites can't get any power, which is not the case, if only one rider does it, the kites can then start looping like crazy....If both riders realease at the begging, they will be completely safe, then it just takes little bit more time to untangle and relauch. Communicating with someone in deep water while the tangled kites are pulling you can be preety hard...I m sure that for begginers that is the ONLY safe way, because they always panic... But do i release the chicken loop every time?! NO, It depends from situation to situation, cuz i have experience, but if it does a complete loop over someone else's lines then deffinetly YES... Cool videos btw and i hope to have a chance to ride an EPIC kite one day...Cheers and greeating from Serbia!!

Sorry I am not an IKO or PASA instructor, but I've been kiting for 21 years now and I've been through a lot of crashes, near death experience and so on.... Plus I started my own kite company EPICKITES.COM 8 yes ago in order to share my passion of kiting with all my fellow kiters by bringing the best QUALITY / PERFORMANCE and CUSTOMERS SERVICE. So once again I made this 8 minute video to let people know that in case you tangle your kites, the most important thing to do is #1: NOT TO PANIC and #2: COMMUNICATE WITH THE OTHER KITER. This video was suppose to be 16 minutes long with more info on what to do in case you get tangled, but decided to keep it under 8 minutes which is still too long. Now as an IKO instructor level 2 you need to make sure you teach your students that Tangling kites will happen soon or later and that's why they always need to look before switching directions and be aware of the surroundings. But most important not to PANIC. You are welcome to make your own video on what to do when your kite gets tangle and please make it under 7 minutes because you will loose your audience. Thank you.

Ok! It wasn't my intention to offend anyone, i just pointed out that for begginers this is not a safe way to untangel two kites, and i stand by my opinion! I never said that you don't have experience, your riding and bag of tricks speak for themselves! Bye!

The only thing I have learned from your video is not to panic, it sometimes happens and talk to the other kiter... man stop talking bullshit... now I understand why there are so many idiots on the water if people watch such videos on the Internet and they don"t know that in such situations it is safer for YOU and for the OTHER KITER to use first safety system and then think what to do next... but no don't panic, it happens sometimes, let's talk to eachother and kites will do some loops SOO MUCH FUNNN
@epickites
@epickites 5 лет назад
Now look who is panicking. :-) Releasing your safety system is your last option. This is how people get hurt. A good example will be about the poor German woman who died few years ago, because she tangled with someone and the other kiter release the safety system immediately and she end up with 2 kites in the air and got dragged on the beach and died. So please make sure you get some lessons before you hurt someone. And yes you can release your Safety System immediately if you are not tangled with someone or when you are getting dragged out of control. But when you are tangle with some one and release your Safety System immediately you are putting the other kiter at risk. So releasing your Safety System when you are tangle with someone else is your last option, but you need to communicate with the kiter and let him or her know that you are releasing your CL so he or she is ready.

Once again releasing your CL should be your last option and if you do so make sure to communicate with the other kiter so both of you can release the bar. Don't put the other person in danger because this can happen: "The kitesurf community is in deep mourning for Silke Gorldt A tragic accident overshadowed the German Kitesurf Tour at Fischland-Darss. Silke Gorldt, the best female German Kitesurfer, died on Friday 6-7-02. The autopsy showed that her dead was a result of her internal injuries. The Event organizer and Silkes relatives founded today, 6-11-02 the Silke Gorldt foundation to keep her spirit alive. On Saturday evening before sunset, German and international kitersurfers came together on the beach in Wustrow for a memorial ceremony with the event organizers and Silkes relatives. In deep mourning, they put flowers in the water and remembered a great personality in kiteboarding. We will never forget her. Silke was the best woman kitesurfer in Germany and a pioneer of the sport. The 26 year old from Bavaria was riding for the North Team and studied politics in Wilhelmshafen. Amongst her greatest success was her title as German national Champion and several top three places in World Cup Events. Silkes funeral will be held in Rupolding, Saturday 6-15-02. The tragic accident happened in the last heat of the contest, on Friday afternoon 3 pm, at the beach in Zingst, Germany, Baltic Sea. The lines of two kiters accidentally tangled while passing each other on the water. While one kiter was able to use his safety system and let go of his bar, Silke couldn’t unhook her kite. His bar got stuck in her lines, in the way that the kite flew circles in the power zone, generating the most possible pull like this. As an effect of that Silke got pulled over the water with the power of two kites, hit a wooden fence and got dragged over the beach. The rescue team of the ambulance, which was on standby, treated Silke with immediate first aid, 15 minutes later the helicopter arrived. Although there where no serious exterior injuries visible, Silke passed away in the hospital Kronenburg 4:55 pm, after all life-supporting measures failed. The autopsy showed, that Silkes dead was a result of her internal injuries, and not of her brain injury. Further, the doctor said, that as a result of the impact, Silke was unconscious as she arrived with the helicopter and didn’t felt any pain. The tragic incident involving Silke Gorldt was a freak accident. The conditions with 15 to 20 knots of wind were perfect for a competition and according to many experts on the scene, it could have happened to any one of the competitors. The two kitesurfers involved were passing each other routinely on the water and inexplicably there lines became tangled. Further, the organizers, all experienced kitesurfers themselves, provided the most possible security for the event. How the tragedy unfolded that day remains a mystery and subject to further inquiry."
