She was 19. Imagine that! Her personality in front of the camera, that mature deep and husky voice. 19 years old!! Quite amazing, even whether you like her music or not.
True, she was and is still a great talent. Try Diana Ankudinova covering ‘twist in my sobriety’ for an 18yo also “quite amazing” with her mature deep voice and stage presence:)
Nah, it just was that obscure bit of music slipping into a mainstream which was exactly as boring as it is these days. The past just looks better because the irrelevant stuff washes away, leaving behind the gems, gold nuggets and interestingly shaped rocks only, while the crap gets rightfully forgotten. That is why in hindsight we think of the late 80s like there was every week some Bobby McFerrin or Tanita Tikaram presenting something unusual, when in fact that time was just about Milli Vanilli farting out Frank Farian's 200th generic track and staying on top of the charts with it for ages.
@@Schmidtelpunkt Well, Sir, I disagree :) and I'd explain why, but it would take me a lot of time coz 80s were diverse and opulent. Mentioning MIlli Vanilli is kinda lame though , was a rare bad moment of the decade. ;)
@@TheSpookyDuke Seriously - don't just judge from memory, look at the charts. And talking about "opulence" - look what is available now beside the mainstream. It is not like BTS would clog up all radio channels at once like Milli Vanilli could back then. There is always the chance to discover new artists and even a lame RU-vid or Spotify algorithm will introduce more odd choices than any channel back then dared to do during daylight...
@@Schmidtelpunkt You're really malinformed. For instance - I lived in Yugoslavia in the 80s (yes a socialist country) and the quality of mainstream music was 1000 times better than now. And that was the case in most European countries back then, of course England was leading, not only in Europe but worlwide. We didn't have internet and yet there were literally thousands of high quality pop songs rolling on radio stations on a daily basis. And now? Cmon, don't pull my tongue, pal. :D Just one example - do you really think today's "artists" can pull off something like .. Live aid? No no no... it's an illusion
I have very happy memories associated with this song and at 18 years of age when this song came out of course I had a huge crush on Tanita. What a beautiful and distinctive voice.
The beautiful Tanita, young, talented and confident, the latter years of the 80's were a sensation to a very musically aware generation which gave rise to such a positive vibe from almost every angle. I miss that vibe more and more these days.
Lovely words, Rodger. I was a small boy at the end of the 80's, 9 and 10 years old. Our parents cursed the Stock, Aitken & Waterman generation, Kylie, Jason Donovan, Sinitta, all those types, and I myself gravitated towards the 60s and 70s stuff too. Just goes to show, people often don't know what they have until it's gone. Some of the music coming from the 80s are now right there, pride of place near the top of my playlists.
I absolutely love Tanita Tikaram - I don't know any cyrillic but judging by google translate It seems I'm not alone! Not only is she beautiful and a damn good singer but she sings about real issues that most people turn a blind eye to. I could be wrong but I think maybe she's one of the most underrated artists of all time!
Decent, modest, humble people always faced difficulties, complications, always faced uphill, against the wind. This is the world of correctness. Some artists don't need advertising, promotion and publicity. Tanita Tikaram is really a modest person and I appreciate and respect that. Such artists sing about important and essential matters.
@@reprise1776I kind of recall recording some of her stuff on the boy Kershaw’s show, maybe Peel too. Around the same time we all went mad for Michelle Shocked.
I will always love Tanita Tikaram's beautiful voice. It seems like all Tanita's songs are ageless for some reason. Love her classic Twist in my Sobriety.
I was a teenager in the 60s. I loved this song when it first came out. Tiz 2024 and I'm still enjoying it even if I cant dance to it as I once did. Oh to be young again?
That's probably because there was not much room in the music world of the late 1980s for girls who were very serious and who admired Leonard Cohen. The next one hit wonders were Tiffany and Debby Gibson.
Tanita Tikaram!!!! 👋👋👋👋👋🙏💃💖💖💖💖🌹
Wow well said the 80s were a wonderful time with wonderful heartfelt songs like this yes this last few years have nearly broken my resolve we seem to live in a time of war greed lack of empathy for are fellow human beings , but this song and the songs of that decade fill me with hope and warmth take care
So how is it that I have only heard this song for the first time today on MTV 80's Australia? Love it and have been playing it over and over since. She is only known for Twist In My Sobriety down here. Such a fun, happy tune that should have done more down under (only charted at 142!!! Twist made #23). Love her voice. And hate me if you must, but I love the piano accordion in songs like this.
This was one of the best songs I liked when I was a teenage. I was always waiting for this song on TV when there was no internet. Now I’m listening it as if I’m at that age again 😊
Same here. This song stood out on the CD to me while listening for the first time. I was sent a promotional copy on cassette while working at a CD Only music store back in 1988. I bought her first 5 releases and listen to this CD most. I'm going through an artist rediscovery period and listening to music I missed. It is a double-edged sword liking all kinds of music. For all of the great music you hear, there is always great music you miss.
What a wonderful woman. She has brightened my life since Ancient Heart came out. God bless you, Tanita and thank you for you for sharing your beautiful - beautiful talent. I love you.
Я песню Twist In My Sobriety долго искал, лет 20.
Tomorrow my mum starts her first round of chemo, I will always remember this as the day Tanita Tikaram came into my life and made things just that little but easier.
Bravo, great, class and beauty, the eternal and unforgettable music of our childhood, absolute respect and bow, from old Sofia Bulgaria !!!
The woman is marvelous. Her music is magical. Tanita -- I hunt her CDs down everywhere & buy them without having heard the songs. You know she's going to deliver greatness every time. And she has. The general music-loving public doesn't know this secret. What a secret she is.
How cool is Tanita Tikaram?! My late beloved Deirdre loved this lady when she first heard and set eyes on her. Tanitas debut album in 1988 Ancient Heart was cooler than anything gone before. No point in offending anybody! Twist in my Sobriety is such a great track. How proud must Tanita be with that result? Totally Cool. And getting cooler.
This has all the elements of the perfect song, amazing voice, violin solo and a horn section. The element of the perfect video, the most beautiful woman singing the lyrics.
Brilliant sums up the diversity creativity and talent in 80s. Her brother is a famous actor he has been in Midsomer Murders. She is talented in her own way. Love this tune
now THAT was amazing music. still IS! lots of childhood memories, but I find this sounds better than ever... amazing voice Tanita Tikaram. Really hope to see you back in Vienna some day....
I've been a fan since Ancient Heart came out, but I have only looked up this music video about 2 years ago. We are the same age and her music really takes me back -- the feeling, the energy and the longing.
This song was my favourite when I first heard the album Ancient heart it was the first album I remember growing up so it's always been special. But I didn't see the video until years later and now it means even more as I work as a theatre technician and I love seeing all the back stage equipment dotted around!!
the miracle music :-9 - during the 00's, we had in Portugal a trend of 80's revival club scene. every time people were too shy to dance, our DJ (Hi Paulito DJ) played this song, everyone went to the dance floor dance and sing. We tested this hypothesis several times.
i feel bad they tried to make her pop. the fact they couldnt means she won. there will never be another dolly. there will never be another tanita. i can listen 4ever.
Where have they gone indeed! She is so beautiful - I've just become 50 and totally understand - Now under Lock-down All I want is to cuddle up with a nice girl! Tanita is beautiful as I'm sure you'll agree ! I believe in hope and faith and we'll get there in the end!
Great song and I love seeing Tanita dance around and have fun after being so serious with Twist. Does anyone else think she looks a lot like Phoebe Cates?
A very lively indeed cos this song does have style & doesn't lack excitement. The 80's were a great time for music. She can definitely sing and has the voice for it. Way to go with this one !
Heard it on Absolute 80s the other day and couldn't remember what it was! Really like it and she was cute back in the day (and still looks good at 51 now)! Anyway...BRING BACK THE 80s :D
