If you have not watched part one yet do that first! 99% of all tankless water heaters issues are installation related. Even some of the ones mentioned in this segment may have been issues from the start but took a couple years to develop into a problem that you could notice. Tankless water heaters should be installed and serviced ONLY by Licensed, insured and properly trained contractors. If you do not wish to pay to have a tankless water heater installed or services by one of these people, you might want to stay with a tank style water heater.
In this segment we will go over some specific things that cause error codes on many brands of gas tankless water heaters and their causes. If you have a professional grade tankless, had it installed correctly and DO NOT have an error code, the problem is with FLOW. Some of that is covered here.
Home Owners: If you are not trained on servicing these machines you should not even remove the cover. Please hire a professional before you hurt yourself or someone else. I am not responsible for the decisions you make regarding your equipment. Proceed at YOUR OWN RISK! This video is for informational purposes only.

Thank you for making these very informative videos. I bought a new house with two separate hot water systems with two Rinnai heaters. I was getting a 'failure to light' code on one of them, had only hot water in one shower and only cold water in another but all the sinks worked fine. It took a while to figure it out and my local certified Rinnai repair guy though I needed to replace the burner because only the left half was lighting. He didn't know it was a two stage burner and with more demand the right side would actually light. After reading the Rinnai manual I tightened all the electrical connections and sure enough the igniter ground was corroded so that fixed the Rinnai code but it didn't help the showers. It turned out that both shower pressure balancing valves were stuck--one in the cold position and one in the hot position. After three months of "what the heck?" I have everything working. I do have a loud whistle coming from the vent pipe of one of the Rinnai's and just putting my hand near the vent the whistling stops so I'm guessing I need to clean out the vent. The end of the vent has a screen cover and there's nothing around it to block it and the inside of the pipe does not look restricted but I'm definitely going to attempt to clean it. Thanks again for the videos.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting this video. My Rinnai Tankless was installed about a year ago and started having problems staying hot about a week ago (no error codes). I descaled it / cleaned the filter and it didn't fix the problem. Guess what??? The problem ended up being our outdoor shop faucet that my wife had left on (hot and cold) and connected to a hose nozzle. This was causing a "cross connection" that you described. Turned them off and FIXED! Thanks again!

Hey, Scott. Thank you for your excellent videos on tankless water heaters. I am greatful that there are people like you, who explain to other ignorant people out there that these products have so many advantages and benefits over the old-fashioned obese pots of constantly boiling water. My Rhinnai gas heater looks just exactly like yours. It was installed in 2008 by a specially trained tankless installer. He told me he actually had to take a special class to become certified. I am very happy with my Rhinnai water heater, but I have one concern. The exhaust pipe is installed horizontally with a slight slope TOWARDS the heater instead of away from the heater. That may cause problem in future with the condensate backing up into the heater. Moving the heater up by few inches is not an option because that would mean cutting all the pipes that run to it, including the gas pipe (which is pain in the butt). I could probably drill a new hole in the concrete foundation wall and re-position exhaust pipe few inches down to create that slight slope away from the heater (94 degree bend), but the patch in the wall would look ugly, especially on the outside. I saw a video on "Ask This Old House" channel where they attached a clear vinyl drainage pipe on top of the heater, but they didn't show how to do it or what kind of adapter/coupling to use. I am not sure how that method works. Is that an effective way to get rid of the condensate? What are my options? What would you suggest me to do? Thank you, Eugene
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
zateinikny2175 Hey Eugene. It's a common mistake. If it is a very short run up and out it may never cause you a problem other than rain maybe as condensate only seems to form in longer vent runs and in colder climates. You don't say where you are in the country. If your heater looks like mine and you don't have a condensate drain connection where you vent connects to the top of the unit., you are going to have a tough time adding one now. I have an idea for you to try if you want. You should have a rubber plate covering the hole where the vent goes through for looks. You can remove that and inspect your hole. (I know it sounds dirty but stick with me haha) so if you can remove that vent stub out temporarily (Be careful not to damage the gaskets) to get it out of the way. Put a plasic bag over the opening of the 90* bend or remove it too) to keep out crap and cover the top of your heater. (Cover everything GOOD!) Then using the old school method of hole enlarging, take a hammer and chisel and make the whole a little bigger at the bottom inside, and however bigger outside you make it so the rubber will still cover the hole when you are finished. It's going to take some work and patience, but you can do it. Then reassemble the venting and pack insulation above the pipe to hold it down and seal up the hole (NOT SPRAY FOAM! it can crush the pipe) You should be able to cheat the inch or so you need. Again if you are not in a cold climate and if you don't have more than a couple of feet, I don't think I'd worry about it. Might not hurt to have a service done on it to check things out and clean it after all those years if it's that old but other wise depending on your situation it may be no big deal at all.

Thanks so much Scott, very helpful videos! I have a Rinnai tankless propane model R75LS at a remote cabin in NY state, and earlier this winter, I drained it and the well-pump in the wrong order…so, when I came back a week later, I thawed out the basement for a few hours, and then the heater started raining and flooding the basement. Apparently a little water was trapped and froze; my fault. I shut everything off and could see that a pressure/safety gasket at the bottom left, inside, had come undone, possibly to protect the unit, and I don't know how to most easily set it back. Thats where the water was leaking all out. It seems like it would be easy - could I do it myself without paying a lot of money for a service person to come in from an hour away? Thanks for your attention.

Had a code 11 with a beeping on a 5 yo RL75i. Flushed the unit for an hour and cleaned the filter. Flushing and cleaning annually since 2 years old when we first got the code 11. This time 6 months in and got the code 11 again with no hot water. Turned off and on and now working fine. Thank you for your videos. Very helpful.

Good review of potential problems with tank-less water heaters. The only thing I disagree with (as a former Navy Nuke Machinist Mate in #1 RX and ER, and BSME) is always using a 'certified' technician. When it comes to electrical installations, I will always get a licensed electrician, because electrical stuff is 'lights and mirrors' stuff to me. Water heaters, heat exchangers, air compressors, water supply piping, etc., I don't trust anyone else doing that kind of stuff. Case in point. My wife wanted to install solar panels to augment our house and farm usage. Electrical. Looked up the solar system installers approved by the State. Got a Master Electrician listed as approved for solar installations in Southwestern Ohio. Started out with just 24 panels using Enphase microinverters. That's a system that uses the Duke transmission lines as its 'battery' when the panels are making more electricity than we use daily. This idiot knew electrical stuff, for sure, but when it came to common sense 'mechanical' stuff, he was a TOTAL imbecile, yet approved as a certified installer of solar systems. After he was done installing and the system was up and running, I finally got up on the roof (I hate heights) to inspect his workmanship. Not only were the solar panels butted up end to end with no gap for expansion, he used an electric drill to install the stainless steel bolt and nuts that held everything in place. I found that out when we tried to loosen the bolts to create a gap between the panels. Plus found that he actually mounted some of the panels like 'diving boards' completely wrong according to the installation paperwork that was taped to the back of each panel. You don't put stainless steel threads together FAST. In nuclear piping systems 304 stainless valve caps had ACME threads on the cap and valve bodies. If you did not Neolube (graphite alcohol mixture) the threads first before engaging them, and turning the cap on slowly to keep from galling the threads together (like welding them), you would not be able to get them apart easily, if at all. We had to grind at least three dozen fasteners to get them off of the solar mounting hardware. I ended up having the idiot remove all the panels, and when he got done I told him "bye, bye," and reinstalled all of the panels and wiring all over again from start, the RIGHT way! As Clint Eastwood said in one of his movies, "A man has to know his limits." I've seen too many idiots with all kinds of certificates, even Master Criminal Investigators, who have all the credentials but don't know $#!+ when it comes to doing the job correctly. Plan it out. Make drawings. Watch RU-vid videos. Note where you will need some help. Then get the job done!

Hi Scott, Thank you for the video! It was very informative and I just got a house and this help me understand a bit more on the temperature setting. I am an electric engineer and always in search of optimizing my home. My question. Every time the electric tankless water heater turns on I get a dip in the electric Voltage. Have you address this issue in the past? How have you solve it? I was thinking about installing a Capacitor to handle the kicks but have not done all the research yet.

I have Rinnai R85 model, recently it began displaying LC - limescale code... I wanted to do basic Flush with vinegar, but couldn't because the Flush Valves we jammed stuck. I plumber ( also certified to work on Rinnai Tankless ) came changed out the entire Valve Kit... He also said once I did the Vinegar Flush & clean the filter, the code should stop appearing.. Well after flushing the valves with Vinegar, the Code is still flashing and also my water pressure throughout the house has decreased significantly. Why is the error LC code still flashing ? (even after a flush and I could clearly see the the difference in the vinegar.) Will be calling the plumber back today?
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
Jonathan Jones Mr. Jones. He has to manually clean the thermistors, or they will continue to throw the LC code. Tell him to remove them and wipe off good with a paper towel (Not emory cloth!) and re-install. Then unplug the unit for a couple minutes and put back in service. That should do it. As for your water pressure, check the filter on the Rinnai and also all of your aerators. When you start messing with water systems, sometimes you stir up a lot of crap that stops them up. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your info. One last question on which Rinnai tankless would you suggest ? Our house has 2 full baths there is only 2 of us & we never take showers at the same time. We have never ran a dishwasher or a washer during bath time either, Talked to 3 installers which pushed for more costly high btu units with no good reason behind it. Just stated the bigger unit won't run out of hot water.

Hi Scott, I have watch videos 1-3 and I must say you do an excellent job on them. I have a question regarding my Rinnai R75LS. I just moved into my new home 2 weeks ago. The home is heated by the hot water heater as well through a radiant heating system hooked to the Rinnai. The issue that I am having is that the water does not stay hot. I have it set at 130* and whenever we turn on a faucet or shower to hot, it gives us either luke warm water or hot water for about a minute and then goes back to luke warm. I have tried lowering the temperature setting to 120* thinking it may be a mixing issue, but that does not solve the problem. The Rinnai revs up when you turn on the hot water, but then revs down after about 45 seconds or so even if the hot water is left running. What do you think might cause this issue/do you have any suggestions for a do it yourself fix? Thank you in advance!
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
Tyrone Biggums You probably have a check valve stuck or missing where you should have one to keep your HVAC water from flowing into the domestic water side when it not running. Something is crossed up. You can pull the outlet temp thermister up on the Rinnai to know exactly what is leaving the unit. To get there press and hold the down arrow button for about 2 seconds and while holding it press the on/off button and let them both go. This will make the unit go into monitor mode. it will flash "01" and a number (that is your flow) then press up arrow button to "02" and a number. That is the outlet temp. Should be within 2*. If you are getting luke warm water but it is leaving the unit hot, you have a cross connection someplace you're contractor needs to find. In a new home, my money is on a missing or stuck check valve. Do the same down arrow+ on/off to turn it back to normal readout. If your home is new don't mess with it. Make the builder send the installer out to fix it. You have a one year warranty from your builder and you don't want to void is messing with stuff. BTW, I hope that you don't have floor radiant heat running through the same tankless that feeds your domestic water system! (That is a recipe for disaster with Legonaires disease. If you have a Heat exchanger that separates the heating from domestic then that's ok.

Great video, I live in Brazil and we use tankless systems here. I have installed US faucets and now I get no hot water, beacause of the flow rate restricters in the outlets of the faucets drop the water pressure outgoing so that the water heater cuts off . But, if I remove the restricters I get hot water, how can or can a tankless water heater flow adjustment be done to where it comes on with lower water pressure out of the faucet.
@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
+Carmen Albuquerque You can try to turn it down in temperature. THat might help, depending on model. Sometimes you just have to remove the flow restrictors or change out the Aerators to a higher flow.

Thank you for the education. I have a AO smith (510c), it's my understanding that's it also Takagi. It's was installed by the builder 3 years ago, works ok, until lately, it's been getting stuck on standby mode (orange light). I cycled thru the output temperature setting, and turn on the hot water in order to get the burners running again (green and orange light [in use indicator] will come on). What can be done to get this thing back to its proper running mode? The tank is flushed regularly, filter cleaned and a scale inhibitor is installed at the cold water in let.
@scottnra
@scottnra 3 года назад
Francis Kun Yes sir, it is a Takagi. I'm not as familiar with those but the biggest issue is because they are typically sold to just about anyone based on price, (Especially to builders who like to buy the cheapest thing they can find with the biggest rebate) there are not very many people trained to work on them, getting people who are trained, or that want to work on those can be a hassle. I would advise starting with their website to see if you can get them to help you locate a local service provider. If that does not work, use Navien's website and call a couple of their service providers to see if they can help you. (At least they will know tankless) Thank you for watching! Scott, I appreciate your videos on the tankless water heaters. we had a Rinnai installed in our home about 10 years ago by a licensed plumber that was referred by a local company that sells these. The unit has run well and I flush it typically every two years. I've started having an issue with it and thought I would share it with you. After using the unit, it should go into cool down mode for a minute or so afterwards to purge. what i'm seeing is that even though the hot water has been turned off the unit continues to run and water is coming from the overflow pipe. I turn the unit off and allow it to cool and reset it. At times it starts, runs, and stops as designed. Other times it doesn't. I contacted Rinnai and they said they've never heard of this problem and don't know what to tell me. I asked for a licensed Rinnai service tech in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and they told me there isn't one. With that being said I think perhaps there's a issue with the control board or sensor of some sort but thought you might have advice on it. thanks again, Bob Chance
@scottnra
@scottnra 6 лет назад
There is not and overflow pipe that I know of unless you mean the relief valve. If you have a relief valve that has gone bad, it's a pretty easy replacement. If water is coming from the RV it's either a pressure issue in your home or it is bad. What temperature do you have it set at and exactly where is the water coming from when you turn it off? Also, Do you have a pressure reducing valve on your house? Let's start there...
@caddyshaq1
@caddyshaq1 6 лет назад
Scott, thanks for your reply. What I am calling an overflow is in fact the relief valve. After the unit has run its normal cycle and the hot water is turned off the burner is still lit and water continues being heated instead of turning the burner off and going into cool down mode. The water remaining in the system is heating up and then discharging through the relief valve as the pressure become too great. As I said before it doesn't always do this but is intermittent. I have the temperature at 130 degrees. I looked at the line into the home and it has a regulator on it. We've not had issue with it putting out hot water, just recently it's been acting irrational.

Question. Would it be practical to install an electic instant water heater after a standered tank water heater. And use the tank as a pre heater on the lowest setting. I have a well with cold water and only space for a 40 gallon water heater and live in Oregon. Any thoughts?
@scottnra
@scottnra 6 лет назад
Not only practical but Seisco makes a model just for this called the Supercharger. 70 and 90 amp models. They are designed to kick in when the tank begins to run out of hot water so you are really only asking them to raise the water temperature a few degrees if at all most of the time giving your 50 gallon tank a delivery capability close to a 100! I actually bought some to sell a while back. I have 2 or 3 left. You can look them up online. If it ends up being something your interested in let me know. Thanks for watching.

@ Scott Gregg, got a question, I am in a apt complex with a tankless water heater, lots of people have problems with hot cold, & hot again then cold and hot water again, is it possible for the tank to be the issue, or is it more likely to be a valve in wall situation, that would be the idea for the,issue? I don't think it is cold sandwiches because it will happen 5-15 minutes into a shower, any idea?
@scottnra
@scottnra 6 лет назад
Most like it IS a col water sandwich issue. Make sure your heater is turned down to a normal level. Even 115 is a good idea in the summer. If you are down south it is worse than up north. Also make sure your shower head jets are not limed up. Most of the newer ones have silicone jets you can run your thumb over while running to clear them. All Models require a minimum flow to fire. Some need as much as .75GPM just to fire and it gets worse if it is set very hot! so if you need 1 or more gpm to fire and keep lit, and you have it set for 125, but you actually shower at about 106 and your shower head is using about 2gpm total or less, that's how this happens. Turn the heater down if you can so you use more flow through it and see if it doesn't clear things up. (Also have the Super clean the filter!) Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

A year ago in Cambridge MA our 2 yr old Rinnai R75 shut off. Our licensed plumber/installer found significant water inside. Snow had covered the vent. We had to buy a new unit. Three days ago it beeped and shut off again. We are in Florida. Again our plumber/Rinnai installer found a little water and moisture inside the unit which is 11 months old. No snow this winter. What has caused this? Thanks for your answer. Anne Watt
@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
+Anne Watt The Vent is graded (sloped) the wrong way! The venting should be sloped 1/4" per foot DOWN toward the outside. Also if the vent run is very short, hooking up the condensate collector is a must to keep Northeasters from blowing rain "uphill" into the unit.

He walked me thru cleaning the flame rod and ignition plug with a DOLLAR BILL, could of used a Scott pad but did not have dry and clean one. Don't hesitate to call Noritz great customer service.

Thanx Scott... I will try that...our Rinnai model is the R53 and was installed in 2007.. Our shower heads are the 'navy type" heads that do have a water saving/ flow restriction functionality built into the head...can I increase the flow rate at the tank heater to help with this problem? Other option would be to remove the current Navy shower heads and use non flow restrictive heads...Any thoughts??? Steve

Scott, I have a consistent E012 error on a Navien natural gas heater. It runs maybe a few hours and then gives me the error. Seems only to occur when providing heat to baseboards, but not when just providing hot water (or maybe it occurs with both but the hot water is intermittent, so I haven't seen that). I measured the gas pressure and it seems high. Is a high pressure able to cause that the same as a low pressure?

Hey Mr. Gregg. I have a Rheem Tankless unit and it makes a loud bang during start up. It's like the gas builds up and it ignites too hard. Any ideas? I've had it for a couple of years. It's always done that since installed. It's so violent the front cover flexes with it fires.

That is NOT a good sign? Who installed it? Might want to have them back out to figure out the problem before it goes BOOM one too many times! That is NOT normal and something is very wrong. This is why I keep saying these are NOT DIY projects.... Even some plumbers still don't like them because they have not been trained on today's equipment and don't know how to install them correctly.

Excellent videos, very helpful to understand some key issues and how very technical problems can be. Our Rinnai is 10 years old, and has run completely without problems for all this time until now. Started making lots of rumbling sounds and also we noticed a very small bit of leaking. No error codes. Service technician checked everything out, did find a dead roach inside blower and cleaned that well, but it still makes rumbling on high fire. Other than that was operating perfectly when tech left, but now will start up occasionally but not most of the time, and is leaking a good bit more and cannot be condensation because the unit won't run. Any thoughts as to what this might be?
@scottnra

Some kind of combustion issue. Check all vents, air intake passageways (A very good cleaning will involve pulling out the fan, manifolds, burners, etc) Blow out the HX and then once it's all back together check/set combustion with a digital manometer. (Not too many techs know how to do this, but Rinnai can walk them thought it as long as they have the tools) THat should do it assuming your gas pressure coming in has not changed.

Hi @Scott Gregg, I am having a similar issue. I have a Rinnai 75LSi. Originally I had a code 12 and then had the flame rod sensor cleaned and it started working fine however I have been noticing the outside exhaust started to have a strong gas smell. After about a month I wasn't getting hot water and noticed water dripping from the unit. I then tried doing a flush thinking it may have pipes blocking flow due to mineral deposit but the water didn't flow out from the other end. I just had more dripping / leaking coming out from the unit. Any thoughts on this issue? TIA!

I have an older Bosch Aquastar 125B. Water temps are really low at some outlets and others such as a shower you have to turn on an adjacent sink to get enough hot water to shower. I another bath I can turn on the shower and sink simultaneously and both deliver less than warm water. Then when you shut the sink off the shower gets to a good warm shower temp for about a minute then back to that not quite warm enough temp. Unless I play w/the sinks and showers, turning them on and off to get heat from them the water never gets hot enough to even wash dishes except at the utility room sink, but even that isn't terribly hot. The unit was descaled w/vinegar for about 10 hours in late 2015 and is currently set to max temp as well. I've watched 2 of your videos and now on to the third! I need some help here!

Check your fixtures for fouling/limescale buildup. Many times shower heads jets get limed up and you can run your thumb around them vigorously to remove it while its running. (If you have the kind with rubber jets) Aerators also get plugged up and need to be cleaned or replaced. You have a low flow issue. I'll bet this will fit it.

We had a thunder lighting storm go through Atlanta last night. Now the fuses are blown and I replaced them twice today and every time I turn the power on the fuses blow still. I think lightning shorted the board. So frustrating. Now we have no hot water and I can’t afford to replace the unit.
@scottnra

You need to get a Service provider to look at it. Could just be the board but if a lightning strike got it, I think I'd call my Homeowners insurance. I would personally not want to put a bunch of money into a unit that took a big power hit of ANY brand. You could end up spending more than the cost of a new one very quickly as you might be chasing parts for a while finding everything the surge took out. It's a nightmare for a service tech too for the same reason.

Thanks for the tips. I have a faucet in the master bath that will literately takes minutes for the hot water to begin. I have heard maybe it's because it is further away, but it is on the other side of the wall where the the outdoor Rheem tankless water heater. The garden tub, which is located beside this faucet, does not take as long. It is set on 120. We thought we would turn it up to 130. When needing warm or hot water, we don't even turn on the cold water. In other words I don't think it even reaches 120 , if it did we would need to turn on the cold to mix in the hot. It sounds like you do not recommend this, what is your suggestion?
@scottnra
@scottnra 5 лет назад
You might have a crossed water line. Flow rate determines how long the wait is so the tub will get hot faster than the sink. HOWEVER if you have it set at 130 and its not painfully hot, something is not right! Try this: Turn off on the cold valve to the hot water heater then turn on a cold only faucet. (From a two handle, not a one handle faucet) If you still have pressure and flow that does not stop pretty soon something is crossing cold into your hot lines.

Great video! You mentioned if the temp is too high (above 120) and you're mixing more cold water it could cause the heater to shut off. Why would it shut off? Reaching a temp limit or the flow is slow and doesn't see a demand? Thank you for your help.
@scottnra
@scottnra 6 лет назад
If the flow through the heater drops below about .5GPM it will shut off. If you have the hot water set so high, that you have to mix in a lot of cold water at the faucet to cool it down, your hot water flow rate goes way down. No point in heating water way up just to cool it back down anyway. Hope that helps.

hi scott, I have a Jacuzzi tamkles, its giving an error 14, I tried de-scaling with vimigar and after an hour the vinegar is still clean! could this be a flow sensor problem, re routing the vinegar out instead of pushing it through the heater exchange? please help!
@scottnra
@scottnra 7 лет назад
Jacuzzi was made by Rinnai and sold at Lowes as I recall. Honestly, most of them I've seen were installed wrong. Code 14 is a thermal Fuse. 99% of the time the HX is now shot and that is why the thermal fuse blew. This happens a lot with improperly installed units. There area a lot of mistakes that can be made that don't show up for several years and unit seems to be running fine until it doesn't anymore. It may cost more to fix than to buy a new one but unless you figure out what was wrong with the installation it will happen with the new unit too. This time, hire someone to install it correctly at least if not provide the whole project. A good EXPERIENCED installer will be able to figure out exactly why the first one died.

@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
+Joe Super Fuses are a symptom, not a problem. Anytime a fuse blows you have to find the cause or it just keeps happening. There is something wrong with one of the components and finding it is not easy sometimes. You are going to either need some very good tech support along with electrical knowledge to track it down or try to find a local company familiar with servicing tankless water heaters. It could be anything. Bad ground, a short int he fan, gas valve, pc board, or servo valves. Just throwing parts at it might eventually work but that is not what a (good) technician would do.

I have a 20 year old tankless Rheem water heater rmtg-74pvn2. I was doing a bathroom renovation/remodel converting to a shower with diverter valves. The next day my wife said we didn’t have hot water. I was getting no codes on the thermostat. The unit was going on but not going up in heat… by now you guessed it and in minute 13 of your 17 minute video you talked about a cross connection. I was pressure testing the line before we close the walls up and both the hot and cold shut off valves for the shower were open and of course without valves in the mixing and diverter valves we had a giant cross connect. As soon as you started describing it I paused the video and went down stairs closed the hot water valve and had instant hot water. I’ve been researching for 2 or 3 hrs and trying to figure what changed that would make the unit stop working. As a note, I live in Wisconsin, very hard water so I have a very good water softener and get over 5 gpm through the heater today after about 20 years. The units is in my dusty but basically temperature controlled basement because it’s part of the house . Also I run my water heater at 110 F to keep the flow up. Older units like mine need more flow than the current ones.

@@scottnra based on the soft water profile if the control board did fail would you repair the unit or replace the unit. Since I still have great flow through the unit I feel like the heat exchanger is still in great shape. I know I have a fairly old unit but it runs great and with current laws I would have to replace the single wall stainless 4 " with 4x5 inch pipe which adds another $400 to the project in addition to the $1300 unit.

Very likely a flow problem. MAke sure you have not build up crud in the aerator of the sink you are using, shower head, etc adn have someone clear the filter below the unit. It is going to be something simple like that. They need a certain amount of flow to fire and some of today's low-flow fixtures get a little scale or crap in them and can cause this. Easy fix.

Stephen Gregg Check flow rate. Depending on how old the unit is you have two different ways to get into the maintenance monitors of the unit. With newer models you press and hold the down arrow button for about 2 seconds and then press on/off button at the same time and let them both go. (With older models the up arrow button first and then on/off gives you flow) The display will then show "01" and a number (That's your flow rate) if it says "8" for instance that is .8GPM, "12" would be 1.2. I'm guessing you have a very low flow in your shower head possibly from calcium there. If your head has the little rubber jets that water comes out of, simply rubbing your thumb across them while the shower is running should solve the problem. (Increase flow) If not, you might have to clean it.

I have a unique question. My Rinnai tankless was professionally installed with high output gas meter outside in 2008. It was very quiet when new. One flush was done in 2012. But now whenever it runs it makes a lot of noise. Why?? Up until today I watched your video,my set temp. was at 130. Now I have lowered it to 120.
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
Bharat Amin Actually it's not all that unique. :-) Could be several things. Something could have changed with venting or gas pressure or even combustion. Fora Rinnai to make noise indicates something is wrong with how it is burning. This simple thing to check first is the vent. Has a bush grown up close to the outlet? Has someone placed something right in front of it that might be causing it to suck exhaust bac into the intake?, has something come apart? If not that is may be a gas issue has developed. Something like a regualtor gone bad or something like that. You can go to the Rinnai.us website and use your zip code to find a local Rinnai Authorized Service Provider or just call them on their 800 number. It's not dangerous, but you should get it fixed before it causes other problems.

Scott, Very informative. Quick question. I have a new construction project and my plumber recommends Navien. You mention not caring for those. Any particular reason? Obviously you're a big Rinnai fan but what are the critical differences between Rinnai, Noritz, and Navien? FYI, house will be in Southeastern US and indoor install. Thanks.
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
Eric Nguyen Eric when this video was shot, I was going off of older information about the Navien Product. At the outset they had some HX issues. SS does not like rapid temperature changes at at high delta T. and they were failing. Then the engineers got it figures out and now use a double HX set up so each one only raises the temp part of the way. (If SS was a better material for a tankless everyone would use it because its a hell of a lot cheaper than copper) That said, Navien seems to have it figured out now and I would rate them as at least equal to Rinnai and in several ways superior. Now they have the negative pressure gas valves that makes gas pressure much more forgiving as well as the ability to vent with smaller PVC pipe a much longer way, plus a host of other neat things it can do. Rinnai is still a great product, as is Noritz but we are watching Navien out class Rinnai as they are tending to not listed to what the trade and customers want. Too bad for them I guess. You are going to be very happy with it.

Hi we have a Rinnai tankless water heater and my entire family will be away for a couple of months, so we were thinking of shutting down the unit. Now there is a panel that has an OFF button on it, and btw it is not leaky, so I was wondering if it’d be okay to just shut if off by pressing the button. I did some research online and all of the forums and answers were about a leaky water heater, and most of them involve draining the water inside which I don’t think is necessary for a perfectly-working unit that just needs to be turned off for a couple of months. But I still want to be sure about it.
@scottnra
@scottnra 5 лет назад
Mr. Sun, My advise is to leave it on. It is using next to 0 power and will not operate without flow. (So it's already going to be off) At least your freeze protection will still work as needed if you leave it on and that condition occurs. The models in the last few years have leak detection and can shut off an internal valve if there is a problem which is very unlikely. If you really are worried about it and assuming you have a valve kit installed under it, you can power off the unit, turn off both main valves and drain the heater until you get back. Do not leave water in a heater that is unplugged if there is any chance at all that something could get cold. There area a couple of other drain down down points on the bottom of the heater to let water out. Hope that helps and have a great trip.

@craigerickson1910 7 лет назад
Any time you are having these symptoms, it's telling you that the capacity of the tankless heater is being exceeded. Have you looked at the specs for your heater? Does it say it can provide 8.5 gpm? That's a pretty big number. My 100,000 BTU unit only puts out about 2 gpm. I disagree with your plumber that it's a piping problem! I'd think about finding another plumber. Asking the heater to exceed it's capacity will always result in colder water than you desire. Think about it. You are getting good flow rate at both tub and shower but you're not happy with the water temp. How is that a problem with the pipes?! The pipes have no idea whether they are transporting hot or cold water!

Scott, we have a Noritz tankless water heater and our problem doesn't seem to be covered in your video. Our problem started last winter, we live in Florida and noticed on very cold mornings(cold in Fl terms) 30-45 degrees we have no hot water, nada,none from the hot water tap. Have had system descaled professionally, the problem still continues. Our error code is 16. System works fine during summer, but this morning with temps in 30's no hot water. We have someone coming next week from the gas company to check the gas fittings. Turning the system off and back on does fix the problem temporarily but not ideal to run outside when it's really cold. Any ideas?
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
Tim Ray 16 is an overheat code. You need someone in your area that is a Noritz ASP to come and get the factory on the horn to diagnose and solve the issue. A code 16 is a pretty good sign that something is very wrong. You need to ensure that "descaled professionally" also equates to "Descaled correctly" Using diluted solution, or the wrong size pump can "not" do the job. Also, did they clean or replace the thermistors when they descaled it? Was it limed up when they descaled it? Sometimes if you wait until you get a 16 code to descale, it's too late and the HX is shot. That's one thing Rinnai does VERY well. Their system warns you of limescale before you get to that point. Noritz ia a good heater and a good company. Get them involved. Something else entirely may be going on.

Thank you for posting the three videos. Just recently, our heater started shutting off after about 5-8 minutes into showering. It gets really cold for about 3 minutes and then the warm water will return. Do you know why it would be doing this?We bumped the temp down from 120 to 110. If we cut on hot water on at another faucet ,while someone is still in the shower, the red "in use" light will come back on. We have a Rannai heater, and use gas.
@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
Could be a lot of things really. Cumbustion issue related to gas, flow issue related to something else like stopped up filter, or even shower head. Make sure your shower head is not limed up. If you have a head with the rubber jets on it, rub your thumb across them while showering to remove line scale and see if that helps. This time of year something like that is usually a flow issue from higher temp cold water mixing at the shower. (you need less hot) More flow might solve the problem.
@danielletrimnal9565
@danielletrimnal9565 8 лет назад
We will try cleaning the shower head. If we cut on the hot water at the faucet in the bathroom on, the hot water heater will come back on and from that point we have continuous hot water while showering.

Just found your channel. Great info! I have a Richmond ng tankless. It's only 3 months old. Every now and then, while in use, it emits a fairly loud hum or vibration noise. My installer came and checked the psi for the water and NG. Said everything seems ok. I still have that 'hum' or whatever at times. Is that noise normal? I'm thinking it could possibly be something as simple as where it's connected to the existing plumbing of the house? PVC to Pex. Thanks.

Scott, I have a Rinnai. We get loud hammering when the dishwasher or washing machine run. I've installed hammer arresters on both. No luck. Not a problem with any other use of water in or outside the house. The loud hammering sounds like it comes from around the water heater, which I clean out once a year or so. Ever hear of this problem?
@scottnra

John C. Without hearing it it is hard to say. Could be a combustion issue believe it or not. I've seen them almost shake off the wall when they didn't have the right gas pressure or something in the vent was wrong. You are going to need a tech with a Manometer (preferably digital) and check that vent system to ensure that all the joints are correct and gaskets in place inside and out. You can also take the plate off the intake plenum inside up top. If the unit stops making noise, you know its venting. If not, venting is probably not it, start chasing gas pressures. Rinnai can walk a tech with the right tools through all of this.

There's no error code, and we've had three different technicians (two different companies, plumber and HVAC) come out to look at it, say it's supposedly fixed, and hundreds of dollars later it still isn't. @michaelmalone8995 8 лет назад
+Amy Malone I forgot to say, it's gas.
@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
+Amy Malone YES! No code and intermittent hot water is almost always a flow problem. There area several things it could be. Unfortunately most plumbing contractors are not very good at trouble shooting tankless water heaters. A good Rinnai dealer would figure this out in very short order. If you still have problems, I know some folks up there but try these first. #1. Go to the water heater and close the supply valve shutting off the water to it. Then go to a faucet that has a separate hot and cold water handle. Turn on hot water only. Do you have pressure? As in is water coming out normally? If so you have a cross connection in the house. If the pressure bleeds off and stops or slows WAY down, your fine there, move on to #2. It's actually pretty common. It could be an unfinished bathroom with a shower rough in kit., or a clothes washer set to medium or warm and it's crossing there. Or if you are really unlucky some other crossed water line that will be very hard to find. It's usually something simple once you identify the problem. #2. Also, It could be a flow problem caused by having the unit turned up too high, and/or not getting enough flow. If you have it set over 120* TURN IT DOWN! You can't use water that hot and setting over 120 make the Rinnai minimum flow rate to activate go up to 1GPM! Low flow shower heads and even single handle faucets frequently use around 1- 1.5GPM and if you have the heater cranked up you can get into flow problems if your hot water flow is too low. AT 140* your 1.5GPM shower head may only be using .75GPM of hot water because you have to mix in so much cold water to keep you from getting scalded. You can't shower over about 108 actually unless you have horns and a tail haha. Sometimes you may need to change an aerator at a kitchen sink to a higher flow like 2.2GPM to get a single handle faucet to act right with a tankless too. One of these things should help you out, and save you anymore service calls. If you have a cross connection, you are going to have to find it. Best service outfits in MD for these are Tankless Concepts out of Falls Church, VA and Lenny Blades of Blades Plumbing.

Hey, Scott. I have an issue with an electric hot water heater that was recently installed. It is an Ecosmart ECO-11. Everything appears to work perfectly until the hot water is shut off, then even though the unit appears to shut off and it sounds like it shuts off the water in and around the unit continues to eat up to the point that I can't touch the outlet connection. Is this an electrical issue or plumbing. This is a mystery and I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. Before this unit I had a Heatworks Model 1 and the presure built up so much that it blew the sharkbite connector off the unit. For now I have been turning the breaker on and off to take a shower so that I do not destroy this one as well. In the beginning I thought it may be the unit, but now I think it may be the house or the install. We followed the instructions well and used the 6 awg wire with a 60A breaker. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
+Buju Some of these electrics can do this. It sounds like residual heat from the elements is causing an overheating of the water once flow stops even though the power to the element may actually be "off" (You should check that to make sure when the unit shuts off the elements deenergize) When you have a model with very pittle water content is can make temperature control very difficult, especially during shut down. If the thing is still powering the elements once flow stops something is wrong with the unit. (Or it's a really crappy design) Check it and call the factory. See what they say.

We put a meter on the heating element and it was still running with out water flow, it just sits there and bakes. We also put a probe on the fitting and it was all the way up to a 180 degrees and climbing. I have exchanged the unit and so far so good. If it happens again I just have to give up and go back to a tank because I'm at a loss as to what may be causing this issue in my home. Thanks for your input.

I have a Bradford White unit and it looks almost identical to your Rinnai, only it has a temp controller in the front of the unit... It too has the "LC" error code... Great piece of equipment, no problems so far and its been installed 4 years... Parents older Bosch unit ( 14 years in service) has been not bad, BUT had to replace the exchanger coil once already and it is not compatible with their Bosch dishwasher... go figure.
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
REWYRED LC = Limescale Condition. The Bradford White was made by Rinnai. It is a great unit, and you need yours serviced ASAP! That is what the LC code is there for. Either you have VERY hard water, or you run it VERY hot and it has scaled up from hard water. DO NOT PUT THIS OFF! You can damage the unit if it is not cleaned soon. It's not an earth shattering emergency but needs to to be handles soon. The Bosch thing is due to large flow rates needed to turn it on. The one you have comes on at /6GPM if I'm not mistaken. The newer Rinnai units made in the last several yars come on at .4 and run down to .26! Your units needs a vinegar flush at the very least and clean or replace the thermistors while they are at it (That is what is telling you it needs cleaning.) A good service tech would also take apart the air intake stuff and clean out any bugs etc while the pump is running to flush and also reset or check manifold gas pressure. (Stuff you can't really DIY) Hope that helps/
@REWYRED
@REWYRED 9 лет назад
Scott Gregg My apologies, what I meant is the unit can show the "LC" code as per the owners manual but that has never appeared... In actual fact the unit has never ever given me any grief whatsoever and the only time a code appeared is when I deliberately turned the gas supply off..... The unit never sees anything above 115*F but on the rare occasion it gets taken to the max if I need really hot water.... The unit is due for a service and will be done so promptly, thank you for the advice! I do have a question though: I have seen installations where a standard water tank is used as a heat source for underfloor heating, and I was wondering if this is advisable to do with a Bradford white / Rinnai unit... I know the owners manual says it can be done but have you ever seen or heard of this causing problems??? Just curious as I am planning on putting in a heated driveway and would like to use the tankless as a heat source and heat the glycol loop via a water / glycol exchanger.. BTU wise I know its large enough but was wondering if there could / have been problems if the water inlet temperature to the heater gets excessively hot?? Thank you in advance.
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
REWYRED No Problem, first things first. If you don't have especially hard water and at the temperature you are running the machine, you may never have a limescale issue. However a service is not a bad thing either. You don't have to have them serviced regularly if really even at all if you have decent water, but it is not a bad idea every few years and can help you avoid surprise lockouts. I see more issues from bugs getting into the combustion system (Just like a lot of other equipment) than scale. Now as for your driveway. (I used to design these systems from time to time.) Snow melt systems can take as much as 200btuh/ sqft! Make sure you do all your math before you get your heart set on that. Mother nature is hard to combat. You are going to need a pretty stout boiler to handle even the Class 1 system that allows snow to accumulate but melts it later takes from 100 - 150 BTUH/sq. ft.! (There is a reason more people don't have these) The cost of the gear up front is going to very high, and then the cost to run it also high. (BTU's are not that cheap anymore.) All that said, here is why I don't recommend them for that: Your tankless water heaters will have enough power to handle about 800 sqft at best. (1gpm of flow - 10,000btu of deliverable heat at a 20* delta T. Tankless can do about 8gpm = 80,000 btu of heat to the driveway, and they are not going to be warrantied for that in most cases, and you are going to be running it for many hours on end when it fires up. Something tankless (or any other) water heaters are not designed for. It won't last very long either. Snow melt is something for folks who can afford to have them designed and installed to work with installation cost these days probably running north of $20 per square foot! If you are a well off family (and I hope you are!) and those numbers don't bother you, I would call someone at Rehau in Leesburg, VA (You can google them) and find out who the rep is in your area. They can help get everything else you need as far as design, equipment and contractor who knows what he is doing. Ask for a guy named Mike Norris and tell him some guy from RU-vid named Scott Gregg sent you.

"Code 25" - We were having trouble with the drain line to the outside freezing, causing blockage of the condensation line (no way to insulate the entire line because it is inside a brick wall) resulting in no hot water or lots of condesation tank draining and resetting. Our professional installer connected the condensation line to the wet vent pipe, with the required p-trap, to drain into the septic system so there would be no ice blockage potential. Unforturnately they don't work weekends and after he left on Friday the "Code 25" happened at least 5 times. It doesn't sound like there is any water in the condensation line(of course, we can't be sure), we are certain there is no ice in the line, and draining the condensation tank and resetting the unit allows the unit to run and heat water for a little while. Any ideas?
@scottnra
@scottnra 9 лет назад
aviatorwilliams Yes! When they ran the condensate drain to the Condensate tank/pump they stuck the pipe down in it a little far. If the pipe sticks into the receiver too far (down into the water) it gives a false blocked drain code 25 also. Pull the pipe out (up) just a little bit. It might need to be shortened some, but that IS the problem. Seen it a lot, very simple fix. :-)

Hi Scott, the rental maintenance people installed a tankless water heater in our rental home a few weeks ago. It has never worked appropriately. The water from our taps is either scalding hot or freezing cold regardless of how you set the faucet knobs. The rental company has sent out 3 different people to look at the issue and all have said it's a "sandwich effect" but it sounds like the sandwich effect is a momentary issue, not an issue of water fluctuating between freezing and boiling the entire time you're in the shower (15-20 minutes). Its like the two temperatures never mix. Any ideas how we can fix this?
@scottnra
@scottnra 5 лет назад
Take the flow restrictor out of the shower head. It's probably a very low flow one or clogged with limescale. When the flow is too low for the tankless to fire it shuts off (You freeze) then you jack the temperature control to hot on the shower and it fires again...and... You Burn. Also Turn the heater DOWN! If you set it at say 115 you'll flow more hot and it will run better. Turning it hotter is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want to do. hope that helps.

I am a homeowner DIY'er. I replaced a 40 gallon gas fired tank type heater in 1985 with a Thermar 100,000 BTU tankless heater doing it all myself. It was very straightforward and it's been running fine for all these 31 years. The only maintenance issues I've had is I've been getting 12-14 years from the rubber diaphragm that senses water pressure drop when hot is demanded. That operates the mechanical gas valve. The unit has no other moving parts, needs no electric, and has a standing pilot. It's about an hour job to remove and replace the diaphragm. Twice in 31 years ain't bad. I measured gas consumption before and after installing. Gas use is down by 50%. The heater has paid for itself time and again. Wonderful to occasionally take a sinfully long hot shower with no fear of running out. Mine is old enough that the capacity is low enough you can only use hot water at one location at a time, not a big deal in a small family. After about 15 years use, I removed the heat exchanger and soaked it in dilute 10% hydrochloric acid (concentrated Muriatic acid is about 37% so dilute it about 1 + 3 with water) to remove hard water deposits. It was a total waste of time. There were almost no solids left behind when I evaporated the flush water in a Pyrex baking dish. That means there were next to no minerals deposited inside the heat exchanger. Our water is fairly soft, but not completely so. After putting it all back together, the performance was identical in terms of time to get water at X temperature rise. So. I would take exception to your firm advice that people only have tankless heaters installed by a professional. If you read the manual and are a competent DIY'er, you should have no problems. I agree with you that sizing of the gas supply is important. You just need to understand how to size the pipe properly according to the tables the manufacturer provides as far as how many 45 and 90º elbows you have and the length of straight runs. You don't want your heater to be gas-starved. Maybe what we could agree on is that just like there are well trained competent professionals and there are some hacks out there, there are competent DIY'ers and hacks as well.
@scottnra
@scottnra 7 лет назад
There are certainly hack out there, but we will disagree with this being a DIT project. You unit is dwarfed in capacity of the new ones and much more is needed. I've covered this over and over. I'm glad yours went well,but I will not condone something will get more more people harmed than helped. You left out venting. THe gas piping done wrong probably won't hurt anyone. Just make the unit no work right. A bad vent job can KILL people. If you don't know this, that is why I have my opinion of DIY installs. Also, I have seen a couple DIY installs as good or better than many professional ones. But HUNDREDS of DIY hack jobs from guys who swore they knew what they were doing. (and didn't) You can't project the skills on the very few on everyone else., and you can project the lack of skill from some pros on the good ones. Both will get you in trouble.
@craigerickson1910
@craigerickson1910 7 лет назад
Can't agree more that there are lots of egocentric people who THINK they know what they are doing, but unfortunately don't. Maybe one way to sort out those people would be to ask if they are the type person who opens the box of a new product requiring assembly (furniture, children's playground set, you name it) and actually reads and understands the directions before starting to assemble. I am that rare male. When lost on a road trip, I also am willing to stop and ask for directions BEFORE my sweet wife suggests we might do that ha-ha. Asking doesn't hurt my ego one bit. As for the venting of the tankless heater I installed myself in 1985, it's vented through the same stack that was used by the gas 40 gallon water heater and the gas forced air furnace. Being a chemist by trade, I have also taken no chances and I installed a hard wired smoke and carbon monoxide detector in the basement which is wired to alarm the smoke detector outside the bedrooms should there be a buildup of CO in the basement. I sleep well at night. I accept (as a compliment) your statement that there are a small handfull of DIY'ers who can accomplish such installs as well as a pro. Thanks. Now that I think about it, I'd guess there may be less than 1% of DIY'ers capable of doing an install on a modern tankless heater with perhaps twice the BTU's of my 31 year old heater. At the time I bought mine, it was the largest available.

Our electric EcoSmart 27, installed by a certified electrician, has worked great for 2 yrs (I'm in TX.) A few mornings ago, following a storm, we woke to no hot water. The temperature light still comes on. We soaked the heating elements in vinegar per the EcoSmart techs instructions. (2 of the 3 elements were blackened, scorched looking - ? Is that normal? There was no other buildup.) We changed out the 3 Amp fuse - even tho it looked fine - still no hot water. I'll call the tech back on Monday, but in the meantime, just wondering if you have another suggestion ... I've enjoyed your videos.

+Heather Mares Thank you very much. Not trying to be cute, but did you check the breaker panel? Also, dig through the manual and look for some kind of internal "reset" button, or breaker. Other than that you'll have to use a multi-meter to follow the power in, until you figure where it is stopping. It's a bit advances for the average DIY'er and could result in a "shocking" experiance. BE CAREFUL or better yet, call out a local service guy.

+Scott Gregg - update = hot water :) The Eco Smart Tech man guided me thru disconnecting the temperature sensors. No hot water. I purchased a volt meter, sent him a pic of it & he guided me thru testing the heating elements - & sent me 2 new elements the next day & advised me to soak them once/year in vinegar ... Thanks again for your reply & videos!!

I know this is an older video, but I have a question for ya. A friend's Rinnai only works in the evening. She say's there's no code and that she can run it for 20 min in the morning and still no hot water. A plumber came out and said they cleaned the unit, but I'm not sure what they actually did. Any clue why it would work in the evening but not in the morning?
@scottnra
@scottnra 6 лет назад
That really makes no sense but something is going on. Everything starts with the flow sensor. It is not sensing flow, it will not fire. Could they have had any plumbing work about the time it started? This is one of those things that unfortunately takes an authorized service provider to figure out. It could be that there is a flow problem and in the evening there area other things running hot water while the Rinnai is running giving it enough flow to run. Is it only one particular fixture like a shower head? The head could be limed up limiting flow. What temp is it set at? Give me all the info you can and I'll try to help you figure it out. Could be something simple, could be a flow servo assembly going bad. Rather not advise to have parts changed without a positive ID of the problem.
@libertyroads7342
@libertyroads7342 6 лет назад
They just replied that it has had a code 11 "no ignition" a few times. So guessing either airflow or the igniter. I haven't been a plumber since before my Army days, but I thought I'd take a look at it for her for free and see if it's something simple. She said it's the whole house that doesn't get hot water in the mornings.
@scottnra
@scottnra 6 лет назад
11 is ignition failure. Almost never the ignitor, and rarely airflow for an 11. Sounds to me like a gas issue. Is it LP? Could be a frozen regulator, a bad regulator (It happens) or it could be installed with the wrong size gas pipe and just now be developing a problem. or few other things. (Lots of people tell me they did it themselves and "it's been running fine for a year and half..." Uh huh. :-) Really hard to diagnose over the interweb. They will need a Authorized Service Provider that knows what he/she is doing with a digital manometer. I would check in entire installation. A experienced ASP will have it figured out onsite in minutes.

I have a Rinnai CP 71201 without a display so I don't know the error code and we are not getting hot water. The first thing I did check was to make sure I paid the gas bill. LOL then I came to RU-vid to find help. When I look thru the glass I can see a blue flame light up for a second at the most then it shuts down. I've checked the vent outside and there is nothing blocking it. I'm guessing descaling it would not be the problem. That would be for blockage right? I pulled the two rods out and the one on the right had a little buildup on it and I removed it. Any ideas? Oh and I pulled the filter and checked that too.
@scottnra
@scottnra 8 лет назад
I must say I have not heard of that model. Could that be a non-US model? Without a control to trouble shoot, there should be at least a flashing error code light. From that, a call to tech support can help. Without that, it's hard to say, but a Rinnai works on flow. no flow, no fire. No flow can also be no error code.

it was what i saw on the front of the lid. It's a REU-V2532FFU-US. I just got through today running vinegar thru it. After i sent you the first message it lit back up. I think my problem is the igniter or the flame rod. The one on the left it is alot shorter than the right. I'm thinking I need a new one which I plan on ordering tonight. I've taken the entire unit apart and cleaned it and blew it out. No bugs were found.

My Rinnai RU98 just stopped giving hot water. I see no code. You never told us how to see the code? Is there any key presses I need to do to see the error code ? Anyway I unplugged it from AC power waited 10 seconds and plugged it back in it gave hot water for about 10 secs and then the water went cold.

Clean the filter. Either that or flow sensor is hung up. If there is a code, it will show you without doing anything. If there's not it's flow.

Call Tankless Concepts. (888) 440-3334 They are the best tankless water heater company in VA/MD and one of the top 2 on the east coast! It could be something fairly simple and probably installation related but it's good to get fixed before it causes a real problem.

Outgoing water temperature thermistor. You are going to have to call an ASP to figure out what is going on and why. Go to the Rinnai website and look for Authorized Service Providers in your area. I can't figure that one out from here.

@shreyasinha6468 as tankless have evolved in the US so has my opinion on them. Rinnai is a good product and you are familiar with them, but... There is a better system no you should consider. Navien. I am waiting on my next HX failure on my Rinnai units and will be installing 2 Navien NPE240A2 for my house. These have SS heat exchangers, a better warranty, better support and more features. You can set it up for hot water recirculation several different ways too and even wifi it to your house to control via an ap. Not going to knock the Rinnai by any means but have a good look at Navien before you decide. REmember, I have no way to make any money off of you so you are getting my opinion based on that. :-) Have a great day. Thank you for watching! Hi Scott, thank you for this video. I have a story and a question for you. Perhaps you can answer it. A couple of months ago, our heat sensor pipe in our tankless system failed, leaving us with no hot water and heat. We got that part replaced by our HVAC company. Roughly a month later, we had an error code that said there wasn’t enough water going into the unit, so it couldn’t produce hot water. We had to use a fill tap on the unit to put water back in and raise the pressure (the pressure gauge needle would also drop into the lower end of the green zone). I called my technician back and he found a small leak around a 3 way diverter valve. He replaced the value and it was fine for a couple of weeks until it started really leaking. He got some special screws from the manufacturer (called flowmax) and that stopped the leak and the pressure. However, at the same time I saw the this most recent leak, I noticed that the water level in one of our toilets was lower than normal. It fills to the normal level when you flush then slowly lowers until it’s lower than normal. I don’t know if this is related or some coincidence. Now that the tankless system is fixed, I’ve noticed that the hot water pressure and cold water pressure in the main bathroom is weaker than before, even though the pressure gauge is in the middle of the green zone. If I have the hot water tap on, it starts out strong and hot, but then gets cooler and weaker after a couple of minutes. And then oscillates between hot and cold. But still weak pressure. Same with the shower. I had it set to 60 Celsius, but I changed it to 49 C after your recommendation, but nothing changed so I set it back to 60 C. We are not the original owners of this unit, as we moved in about a year ago and the unit is about 5-6 years old. I don’t think it’s ever been serviced. Thoughts?

magicianmana4 hard to tell over the internet. Toilets and cold water pressure won't be effected by a water heater. However if they turned off water and repressurized it, it might have broken deposits loose that may be clogging things up. Just a thought. Thank you for watching! that was very informative. am looking into going thankless, as we can have 10 people in the house on the weekends and we all like our showers, which means we have to space them out in the morning. during the week, we have 4 people who like to shower. not too bad, if me and my older nephew hit the shower first. as we're quick and don't like popping outta the shower, looking like lobsters stepping into a sauna (like my sister and neice like to do). If they all DO happen to beat me to the shower because I overslept. like last weekend, I ended up waking up rather quickly! It can take that old electric water heater quite some time to "recover". We live out in the country and don't have natural gas. and we find that in our area, propane can be quite expensive. there's only so much room in that "closet" and I think that tankless would be the way to go. There are other times when nobody will be in the house for an extended period of time. like 3-7 days, and it doesnt make sense to keep a hot water tank hot for all that time. I was looking into your brand, as I heard it advertised a few years back and believe it to be the superior brand. but I guess I have to do more research. either way, I found this video very informative. we don't have a lot of issues with out current water heater as far as maintenance issues. it's just the lack of volume and recovery time that's the most pressing issue. I see there's more maintenance involved with going tankless, but nothing that can't be overcome. if it keeps the water hot, and can save me money in the long run, it seems to be worth the extra attention that my current water heater doesn't need.
