Thanks for the review I've had these on my desk since launch. Love them. Also thank you for the fundraiser for us Texans. I'm still boiling my water but I got lucky with electricity. 🙏🏼❤️
@@RobberClobber We don't have running water yet, but we have electricity, so it's not all bad. Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts on the Tannoy speakers and for joining us this morning!
@@RobberClobber We got our hands on drinkable water the other day so we're good now. Hopefully we get water back later this afternoon. Fingers crossed! Appreciate you wanting to help!
You guys, I just had my first shower in a full week and let me tell you it was AMAZING!!! 💃 🥳 🤞 I think we might have gotten through this without broken pipes. Knock on wood!
To those who have donated, you've helped raise about $400 since the video went live. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! And of course, thank you to everyone else who already contributed. We really appreciate it.
nice review. i have the Gold 7's and use them in differing set-ups. i use them with an Eversolo DMP A6 and REL T7x sub (2x the price of the PAIR of Tannoys) in my bedroom/office and 3 Gold 7's + 6 Gold 5's in my home theater with my Marantz AV7706 preamp - all of the Tannoys combined cost less than the Marantz. i'm extremely happy and have been an audiophile for 30+ years and i've had/heard it all.
Glad you like it. Kristi contributes a lot to this channel both in terms of commentary as well as just workload behind the scenes. I sincerely appreciate you recognizing her efforts.
Finally an audiophile who reviews studio monitors! Thanks Andrew! I was looking to buy new studio monitors who don't sound like a real monitors but more as an audiophile speaker. Because on my DJ setup i want the same sound quality as on my hifi setup. Thank you again!
I bought these speakers about 2 months ago. My humble review? They are absolutely gold! I use them conected to a av receiver as zone 2, and they absolutely blew me away. They dont hit very high or very low, but they are dynamic, clear as bells, and simply hits every octave with incredible accuracy. Voice reproduction is crazy impresive, not fatique....you can listen to these for hours with no problems. Bass is tight and aerial, you can hear the bass more than you can feel...but a 5 inch...is a 5. A 8 inch gold would solve this problem. I use these as hifi speakers, and they replaced b&w speakers with ease. No background noise at all. They dont sound loud..if you want to drive them loud...wont work because they will start clipping. However, my neighbours rang my door to put volume down for the first time in 2 years. Looks and material..very sturdy...you can feel quality. I would say they could easily be sold for double the price. The standby lights could've been dimmer... An absolute steal!!!! If you want incredible sound for jazz, classic, hip hop, quite everything appart from electric music...go for them..get a 7 or a 8 inch if you want to drive them harder or if you want more bass. Value for money? A 10 out of 10
I'm also in Austin, it's been a harrowing week. Turning on my stereo for the first time after 5 days was transcendent! I also moved my tv away from between my speakers to get to my fireplace, and coincidentally found significant improvement in acoustical performance
I am currently using Focal Alpha 65 powered speakers (also near field monitors) with a little added Presonus Temblor T10 Sub in my living room system. I love them, people should pay more attention to studio audio products :)
"We don't need to go there again... yeah, we don't need to do that either." Always good to hear a Kristi quip and even better to have you bucket washed and back on "air".
Fantastic review you guys! Love mine and I went from a pair of $6k custom Seas monitors to these and truly love them. Not even in the same league, but I didn't feel drastically short changed either. They actually shocked me. Super coherent, amazing imaging and full sounding, and the tuning options with the treble and bass controls really help adapt them to various room and positioning setups. A simple USB interface with balanced outs like an SSL, Motu, Audient, etc and a computer and you have a very capable system for not much moneys. Or go crazy with a Singxer, Topping, Schiit or any other DAC with preamp and XLR outs. They are revealing enough to reward you with better source gear and higher quality lossless and Hi Res music. For some reason though, they are super hard to get in the US now. Amazon has them and the 7's currently, but they have been consistently sold out many places like Sweetwater, Vintage King and other pro audio retailers. Hoping this is temporary, but grab them while you can! They sell out fast. Next step for me is an AVR with pre outs and a RCA to XLR transformer. I have a feeling these will excel in a 2.2 HT set up. Oh and if you run into issues with driving them to clipping, give that bass shelf switch a throw and knock them down 2db. They actually sound best this way in my room and they'll play a little louder too.
I have Tannoy Gold 8's, the sound is so unbelievable great. Detailed, clear, beautiful, powerful, 3Dimensional. I'm thinking of getting the Gold 7 instead, because the bass is sick. Sick in a good way, but a bit much for prolonged listening sessions. It's painful to have to make such choice, because ideally I would like both :P
I always loved Tannoy loudspeakers. My first floorstanding speakers were by Tannoy. My mother still refers to any PA system as a "tannoy". E.g. Like in a train station,"The tannoy just said that our train will depart in 10 minutes".
Great video. Especially appreciate the plug for helping folks through the charity. Wasn’t sure where to send help so thank you. Local charities tend to know where the most need is. Thanks for a great video.
I've used Tannoys live and in the studio. Great speakers. I'm surprised that these near field designed monitors can fill a room with sound, substituting as hi fi speakers. Pretty amazing.
They do a great job as non desktop speakers, which I too found rather surprising! If I were to stick with them long term for our main room I'd go with the GOLD 8 but for my desktop, the 5 is near perfect (for me).
Great review! I switched to the Tannoy Gold 5 in March and never regretted it! Tip: connect them to a Motu M2/M4 audio interface and you get a really detailed, high-resolution audio solution.
Thank you very much for reviewing these Speakers. I was looking for a proper review on the Gold 5 since they were launched. I was just about buying the Adam T5v... Lucky me I was holding back :) Btw, really like your channel!
Thank you and thank you for joining us this morning and in helping others get the aid they need (and for helping us breathe life back into the channel after a week). Thank. you!
Don't know how I missed this review but I'm so glad you made it. I bought a pair of the Gold 7s for my home studio and I simply love mixing on these monitors, that said, I often use them for casual listening when I'm just relaxing or cleaning or just playing music in the background while doing some random task and I agree with you on basically every point you made about them. These monitors are great and to me, they sound and look much more expensive.
Nice to hear your voices again and to hear you are safe and coping well. These hard times will soon give way to better ones ahead. Texans are a resilient people and they will get through this 🙏🏼. Your long beard/hair story made me chuckle. It’s been my covid look since the start of our 4 months & counting of strict stay at home lockdowns here in Toronto, Canada. I may not recognize myself when I finally can go get a haircut.
Thank you for joining us this morning! Texas will bounce back but in the meantime we're just trying to do what we can to speed up that process for people less fortunate than ourselves. As for the beard and haircut, I've been cutting my own hair now for over.a year, at this point I may just be my own barber going forward 😂
First I ended up with a pair of Martin Logan's after watching your review, now I'll have Tannoy's on the desk. The Martin Logan's really lit up the house, thanks for that.
Having watched the footage on TV here in🏴UK So glad to hear from you guys. Can we extend our love and best wishes to all the folks in Texas and hope things improve very soon ❤
You know, I'm not really sure. It's all handled internally by RU-vid so I would assume it would unless your country has a restriction to donating to foreign charities. Give it a shot and let us know!
I own them for like half a month now, and still like them Everyday. They do remind me a bit of mij fostex fe103sol backloaded fullrange horns, dynamic, punch, the bass is realistic, and goes fairly deep. And the point source gives very nice imaging. They lack some refinement but i mean, for this price?? Nothing to be sad about. They get you involved with the music, that's what's counting for me as a musician my self. Cheers!
I was gonna get the Kanto yu6 for my family room but I had a worry that it wouldn’t have enough power to fill my room which is 16’ tall and 14’ deep but opens into my dining room and kitchen so goes back as far as about 30’. So after watching this room I took a look at the golf 7s and ended up choosing these instead of the Yu6, even tho it was more expensive I am very happy with my purchase. The sound from these are amazing!! Thank you Andrew!
Hope you get the water back soon. Here in SW AR, we were fortunate in that our electricity never went out (a surprise), but three water mains in town went down the day temps got down to zero. Just got water back Sunday morning and shower was first on the list! Stay safe, and hope this was the last of the winter from Hell!
I have a really large collection of tannoy speakers from really old to new some taken from larger and i mean large speaker cabinet's they have the most amazing sound i have found so far you can't go wrong buying most of there models
Glad to know you and Kristi are back and okay. Nice review on the tannoy. I'm in a hunt for an active speakers right now for our bedroom to replace my Edifier R1280DB which is now commissioned in our office😊 Greetings again from 🇵🇭
We do what we can. While I know we're just a tech channel, it's important to both of us that we do more than just talk toys and specs. Thank you for watching and for your support!
First off, thank you for both of your hearts and doing the fundraiser and helping out those in need! I'm in the ATX area and know there are many people across the state that it will help. Secondly, all seriousness aside, we need to see a picture of this cool guy caveman Andrew or it's not real. Thirdly, thanks as always for the review.
Owning a big pair of vintage or heritage series Tannoy’s is on my bucket list. In the meantime, a pair of Gold 5’s or 7’s and any nice little DAC would be perfect for near field listening while working on my iMac.
Fantastic review as always, I was looking for a desktop replacement speaker and purchased them on the back of this review. Really happy with the purchase, they play exactly as described. Thank you.
I'm an owner of a pair of Gold 5, good speakers, BUT I must warn everyone here that the problem with the high frequencies is very evident. I had to modify the speakers with a pair of resistances inside to lower the volume of the tweeter to a - 9dB and balance everything. This choice is very poor from Tannoy. The volume of the tweeter is way too high compared to the woofer. You should be aware of it if you are sensible to high frequencies, because they are quite fatiguing (titanium tweeter as well) and can hurt your ears a lot. Also, components inside are very poor in quality, but I think this is to be expected from a cheap monitor. I recommend spending at least 400$ per speaker (active) to enter the realm of audio quality. Cheers, thanks Andrew for your review.
@@boboutelama5748 Absolutely. I have a pair of Tannoy prestige that are around 9k a pair, I know what I'm talking about. These Gold 5 are toys, but I use them as pc speakers and they are fine for this purpose. Cheers
@Suono & Computer Yeah, the only way is to try them knowing that you have to spend at least 800 for a good pair of active speakers. Can't recommend anything since I haven't tried any aside from these. I know Genelec makes good monitors but still, haven't tried them. Be aware of class D as well, manufacturers tend to put it everywhere nowadays. I still prefer class AB for cheap speakers. Hope it helps.
Hi Andrew, thanks for all the work you do on your channel. I just want to say I purchased a pair of the Gold 5s primarily based on your review and am enjoying them, simple set up with a Airplay2 streamer straight into them. You mentioned no hiss whatsoever but on mind I hear it from about 3 feet away even if I turn the gain all the way down, hopefully I can solve this but overall I really like them, thanks!
Great video! So glad to see you doing something positive for your community and state. I’m in Oklahoma and we’ve had some of the same issues but not on the same scale. Love the fact that you’re reviewing Tannoy! I’ve been using some big ol Tannoys for a couple years now and love their sound. I’d be interested in hearing your opinions on some of their other speakers.
I have the Adam Audio T7V's for the DJ rig, and like them a lot. I never clocked these studio monitors when I was looking unfortunately. But I am not unhappy at all with my decision. For reference, I came from a pair of KRK Rokit 6 G1's.
Hi, Andrew! I live in Brazil and I have been watching your reviews with great interest and attention. I admire the clarity of how you present the equipment and its diction makes it much easier to understand for a foreigner like me. I am a doctor and I have photography and audio as hobbies. In my country we do not have this great offer of products as you have in the USA, in fact, we have a very limited offer and with very high prices due to high taxes on imported products. One of the few manufacturers that have official representation in Brazil is Canadian Edifier. That was the reason for choosing this brand for the bookshelf speakers that I bought when setting up my home office. If you could do a review of this brand we Brazilians would be immensely grateful. By the way, my choice was for the Edifier Airpulse A100 and to my surprise, I found the speakers amazing! Best regards!
thanks for the review. very well delivered. glad to see experts actually looking at studio monitors as a valid consumer / multi-role option. the combination of an internal amp gives far better results than most random speaker-amp matches. for years I am struggling to fight brightness and fatigue of B&W 684.. Would be great to hear your opinion about the famous Yamaha HS8.
Ah you guys always manage to put a genuine smile on my face. Glad you are doing well under the circumstances. Living in South Africa we have rolling blackouts every other month. So I can commiserate on that level. Thanks for the Tannoy review. My favorite speaker brand (currently have a vintage set)
WOW, all the way from S. Africa. That's amazing! Thank you for watching and so glad we're able to put a smile on your face! Blackouts do suck. I had to live with them in California for a bit, so yeah, I can relate. Thanks for watching and enjoy your vintage Tannoy speakers!
Hi Andrew, I really enjoy your reviews, they come across as sincere and not pretentious like other reviewers. Your decor is spot on too. I also like that your wife now contributes and discusses her views too. Keep up the great work. G'Day from Sydney Australia
Love Tannoy! I have the Tannoy Reveal 6 Passive Studio Monitors for my Surround System and will definitely buy more. Love the sound. No “room correction” necessary.
"Legends of the Fall" style! HAHA That was great. Another great review amidst all your craziness. Thanks, again, for everything. You two are great. Love your insight and always look forward to the vids. Stay safe and warm.
Another great assessment mate. I really like hearing the interaction between you and Kristi. You both have the style of voice that is good to listen to. I have purchased Q acoustics & SVS products in the past based on your assessment & been very happy with them. I rate Kristi's opinion saying these speakers are not decor pleasing, for me a high quality product has good form & function. Much like the Rolex Daytona Platinum in brown & blue. That thing is boss! Check it out. You must have it!!!! It's an essential item......
Thank you. This is the lost comprehensive review to this pair I know so far. Pair these with the Bluesound Node 2i and say hello to the future for under 1k🤩
I had the Gold 8s. Didnt like them. The tweeter horn makes the high end very directional which makes the high frequencies very sharp and unpleasant. I did tow them in so that the tweeter line meets in front of my nose but it was still too much treble. I believe this design is probably better for a far field setup because the tulip horns are just do small in diameter. The manual stated they can be up to 9 feet away which is the minimum distance I'd have them. Besides that they sounded fine and had almost no amplifier hiss. I've listened to many coaxial designs and from best to worst were Equator Q series, Presonus Sceptre, Equator D series, Fluid FX series and last the Tannoy Golds.
Glad you talked about hiss (or in this case, lack thereof). It's a common issue I've encountered with powered monitors, particularly the more budget-oriented ones. Not that this has stopped me, I have some JBL 305 and 308 in the house because they are an incredible value on-sale. If you want an insane powered speaker, check out their *7* series monitors like the 708p. Those use the same compression driver/horn as their M2, a professional speaker for mastering rooms that's 5 figures to buy and requires a special amp/signal processor on top. I have always been curious about the Tannoy concentric driver. If you have a hookup for Tannoy products, could you get their floorstanders, the XT6 or XT8? Even better if you could get a hold of the Cheviot or Arden. Those last two are analogous to the Klipsch Forte and Cornwall. Some of my favorite music was recorded/mixed/produced with Tannoy Gold drivers - a lot of rock in the 70s like Pink Floyd. What an incredible way to hear that stuff, in a way similar to the way the artists and engineers heard it when they made it. Glad to hear you guys are doing well. Hope things get better for you soon.
Yeah, I'm glad I caught it before wrapping filming as the GOLD speakers are quieter than most at or around this price point. They're WAY quieter than my old JBL 305s. The 7 Series monitors are legit, I love those things but they're cost prohibitive for some.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Definitely agree on price. I'm glad you do a range of affordability on your channel. Although it's going to be similar to Klipsch Heritage, JBL L100, and other speakers especially if you factor in the inbuilt amplifiers as part of the deal. Thanks for the response. :)
We're starting to get back to relative normal. We're turning the water back on later today, so fingers crossed we don't have massive damage. They're great for desktop use, though they're larger than some desktop speakers. Thanks for watching!
Good luck guys endeavoring to get through this disaster. I know what it’s like as a someone who lived through 911 who lived about 1.5 miles north of the site. You’ll find that this is the time when strangers become unlikely heroes. I’m praying for you all. God bless!!!
I asked my girlfriend what grabbed her first with the Tannoy's. We stepped up after a cable upgrade I did for our 'regular' oldskool Philips hi-fi speakers. She said; 'we immediately had all the goodness we were used too, but calmer and tighter in a comfortable way.' Acoustic music absolutely shines on the Gold's. Our reference for that has become Ben Harper's 'The Three Of Us' ....check it out on the Tannoy's !....have fun baby! Ow, and greetings from Freya to your wife, she really likes the addition of your 'discussions' and her opinion compared to yours. Also, big shout-out to your support for Texas. Freya is connecting to people in Texas for you guys as we speak. The native indian population reservations are the poorest communities in Texas, according to what she knows. 'The Black Feet reservation 'and 'The Pine Ridge reservation' are two of them.
Glad to hear you both are doing okay! And so nice to watch another great review Andrew. I just got a pair of Kef LSX speakers, some call them studio monitors, myself I currently have them in my livingroom. I am so impressed! Love the look and sound of these. Sounds way bigger than their size would suggest. Apart from a minor gripe regarding the kef app(s), I really think these would fit perfectly for both desktop use and in a small to medium sized livingroom. Thanks again for all your great videos and stay safe!
Great content as always... loved the juxtaposition of the American Flag 🇺🇸 behind the 🇬🇧 Tannoy’s 🏴... I was looking below for the link of the American Flag! On a side note, the Gold 7’s are 300wpc & are only $35 more per channel than the Gold 5’s, out of the 3 options (Gold 5, 7 or 8’s) the 7’s are definitely the best bang for the buck. Thanks again & wishing our best to you all!
The flag was purchased from a private seller through Etsy. They only had the one, but I've seen some other sellers online offering similar items so maybe you'll get lucky. Thank you so much for tuning in and for the well wishes!
Hi, Andrew & Kristi! Yes, we all take so much for granted especially in this country. I am a retiree and could only give the minimum amount. But, I was looking at your subscriber base and if all of your viewers would give that amount, you would raise $805,000! Think about that, folks! Examine your heart. Think of all the blessings you have. We can make this happen. Together, we WILL make it happen for these good fellow Americans. God-bless America and of course, God-bless Texas :)
I sincerely appreciate it! Agree, it would be epic of all of our subscribers could pitch in just a dollar, OMG that would help so many people. But we understand that a lot of people are hurting right now, so we'll take whatever folks can spare. But thank you so much for donating and for joining us this morning!
I have the gold 7s and Yamaha Hs7s and they are just as good as each other . When mixing and mastering I use them both and there are no other home studio monitors that are as good as them out there
I prefer "dumb" speakers and I actually like powered/active bookshelves for nearfield or midfield listening. I currently have a pair of Event 20/20 BAS v3 speakers in my office and they are great from 2-8 feet away. I previously had a pair of Yamaha HS8's and they were highly enjoyable as well.
Great review as always. I’ve been using the Klipsch The 5’s as computer monitors, but they are bit much low end, even with bass trim activated. I have taken a leap and ordered the Tannoy Gold 7. Was shocked at how cheap they are £440 for a pair, half the price of the Klipsh. The Klipsch will find a new home in an extension we have planned :-)
@@andrewrobinsonreviews maybe you can help me a bit with the "choosing amp" thing :) Do you think the XTZ Sound Edge A2-300 could be "okay" at the start for the B&W 702 Signature? Or do you know anything else in this price range that could be ok with them? In the future I would probably upgrade at some point
Mr. Robinson! I've always appreciated your balanced reviews on things, especially with the classy American modernist backdrop of your living room. If I may ask, have you even considered reviewing Tekton speakers? So far the only good review of them has been from Zero Fidelity and Steve Guttenberg, but another voice on the matter would be really nice. Also, if you do get a pair, may I suggest reviewing the Moabs, since no one has done a comprehensive video review on them yet.
I was actually one of the first people to ever review Tekton speakers back when Eric was still making them in his garage. If you google Tekton M Lore or Pendragon review you'll find my written reviews of both speakers.
Great been waiting on a good review of these for a while and like others said I’m glad you review studio monitors as well as hi-fi because I think that’s where some of best bang for your buck is at right now! If you can get hold of a pair I recommend the focal shape series, they look fantastic for home use and sound incredible!!
Have Adam Audio A7X and I love them. Although I see the benefits of having a all in one design, I have found that components that just do one thing very well have my personal preference. As noted here with the Tannoy’s my A7X speakers do require sub(s) to get that full range sound. But don’t forget these are near field speakers usually these are on top of a console aimed “straight” at the engineers head. So they sound quite a bit different. Now if there is one thing I would like to see change with Adam Audio is that they make their range available in white. Yes I know these are meant to be heard not looked at, still if HEDD can do it why can’t Adam Audio. Any how Andrew perhaps you should check out PSI Audio from Switzerland I hear great things about their speakers.
@@shapeshifterboogie9853 I don't think anyone would. The smallest one recently went up in price with the new in house built tweeter and are now close to $4k for a set of what are essentially micro monitors.
@@friedeyes333 Yeah I feel the same. They sound good but not 4K or 10K great. I think I might add a Adam Sub10 or upgrade to the HEDD TYPE20 MK2 in white. Or try and get a good deal on a set Adam S3V
Great review. Top content, great voices on a great MIC. love listening to the review on my klipsch 5s. I'm the guy on twitter with the 5s on funky stalls that I showed you. Keep up the great work.
Interesting and different product to review. I've not used powered speakers as my main system speakers but have had them on my PC. Best wishes to everyone there. Stay safe and good luck.
Don't spend money if you don't have to, but if you're on the market for new powered monitors I would definitely consider these (or the 7/8's). Thanks for tuning in and hanging out with us this morning!
I’m not anti self powered speakers and have owned several in the pro-audio world for recording. I just take issue with longevity. From my experience they “fry” or get “glitchy” over 2-3 years.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Genelec 8010A, Focal Alpha, and DynaAudio BM5... I think part if it is because I tend to just leave them on for long durations because it’s easy to forget to turn them off. However I had a pair of Yamaha HS that would not die.
The Tannoy Golds sense when there is no audio signal present and after a little time will engage into a standby sleep mode until a signal is reintroduced. Small feature but I really appreciate it.
Great review. I have the gold 8s and they are amazing. Would love to see you review some of Tannoy's passive speakers. Cheviots or maybe even the Turnbury. Would also be fun to see how they stack up to the JBL, and Klipsch speakers you've reviewed in the past.
Welcome to the Tannoy world.... I've had big dumb 15" Tannoys for over 20 years and I still love them. Checking the Amazon link for the price of these, it's not clear anywhere if the $265 price is each or per pair, but I've got to believe for an active speaker, it's got to be $265/each. For only a tiny bit extra, you can get the Gold 7's which give you more volume and low end.
I’m “next door” in New Mexico......... it’s crazy cold here but our utilizes have stayed functioning. We are thinking of all our neighbors in Texas and hoping and praying y,all get through with minimal suffering....... hang in there and stay warm and healthy,,,,,,,
@@andrewrobinsonreviews He said "New Mexico" not Mexico. 😂 😂 😂 New Mexico, while not Mexico Mexico, is also nice! I'd like to visit Taos and Santa Fe again. :)
