I was very very curious about the Tannoy's and they sound excactly like expected, Tannoy wins it for me. The sound is much more coherent in imaging. I can easily tell the difference here.
Fluid Audio not too long ago released the new FX series. I'd love to see how the FX80 compares to the Tannoy Gold 8. Both being coaxial, and having 8" studio monitors puts them in, roughly the same league (on paper at least). If you can make that happen, I'd be a very happy man. Thanks for all the hard work.
Wow @digital stereophony you have really stepped your game up :) checking all the speakers that I was so curious about when choosing mine a month ago :))) Hope you make more cross reference videos between tannoys Kali and presonus. Keep it up
@@dklecz [sorry for bad english], first listening I had the same impression but with a better source I found the voice and a better balance on Tannoy...
@@DSAUDIOreview This will definitely be a cool one! :D Looking forward to it! Hope IK Release a larger MTM that could go down to 20 Hz in future, would be truly groundbreaking!
This one is up to taste because the Kali has the mid-highs that the Tannoy is missing but the Tannoys have the low-end fullness that the Kali is missing. Great shootout.
Great comparison, thank you! Actually I like the Tannoy a bit more. An Idea warmer, bit more pleasent maybe. Whats maybe not noticable thru recording and thru youtube audio quality is the advantage of being point source.
Tannoy wins again. This is your second clip that I have seen and heard their comparation. Before that I am curious about Kali 8. Now I am clearly. Thanks for your hard work.
I have the Kali 6 and the Tannoy 8. I mix with them. If you want cheap truth both will help you mix open. I must say that because the Kali is designed by JBL folks they sound very close to JBL sound but I will still mix with JBL when I can afford it. To get dependable units you must spend more money to get true JBL quality sound. As with any system it is always better to go with an amp and traditional speakers. Built in amps can only get you so far and can cause a bad mix anywhere the inbuilt amps lack something. But on a budget they all win. If I was to choose I would stick with JBL even knowing their weakness of dependability. I always know a JBL monitor will sound the same across the spectrum - they don't need to be matched drivers. They just sound like JBL. Plug in a set and poof - easy mix.
@@DSAUDIOreview Great news!!! Can I ask you one quick question. You have also expirience with the MTM, if I have a bass heavy song, I only can "drive" the speaker to arround 80 dB (meassured arround 50-70 cm) and then the bass port makes loud noises. My friend has the same "issue". Plus i can not run them hotter then arround 84-85 dB, then the front LED is blinking red and also the sound is not more longer defined. So far i tested it only at the calibrated settings. Maybe I also should test that on the flat speaker settinge. But did you also had this issues as you tested the speakers?
The Gold takes the checkered flag which isn’t a surprise given it’s a more expensive speaker. I wasn’t expecting the Tannoy to be so warm. I’ve done a fair share of demoing them at local pro audio shops and never came away feeling like they were particularly warm. These are going to be winners. Bass is good as well but to me Tannoys always have sneaky bass ...it’s there but not overemphasized rightly so. Thanks for this comparison. Your channel is so vital to me
Hard Call...overall the Tannoy's are a bit louder and slightly more pleasing to the ears, also slightly more leveled keeping almost a perfect line from the mids to the high ends, which gives em a bit more detail without getting to sharp... but well with 3times the power of the cali...and about 200bucks more for the pair, that should to be expected. overall...you cant go wrong with Kali, but if you can spend more and like the design...better go with the Tannoy's.
kalis sound just like jbl lsr to me. Too bright as well. The tannoy are more laid back and I prefer them here. Also coaxial design is always superior to tweeter a few inches away from woofer design.
On the chart, is the "Distortion, 1/6 octave smoothing Fundamental" line (about 85-90db) the same thing as SNR that manufactures report on spec sheets?
Sounding nice tannoys they have good transient response, good soundstage, I was thinking about what they like for hi-fi speakers running it through a valve preamp any experience do they make good hi-fi speakers! See you get some distortion at 50 Hz is that port distortion or resonance in the driver or cabinet
What is the reason?? I have searched these two for 1 year. Until last month i preferred tannoy because it has more presence, maybe because it has more power, but now i prefer kali because it has much better seperation and detail i think. I read many comments in DS's videos and generally i relize DS finds tannoys less attrative.
@@erestortatum Just because I read about Auratone 5C and I was wondering what if the Gold 7 could do the same thing as 5C. What do you think ? A replacement, or the sidekick ?
wasn't until the metal track that I realized I should swap monitors... I would never mix that sound... so it's pointless having a monitor that I'd have to mix to a sound I wouldn't want for it to be right... I think a sub and some room correction with a well balanced room is needed with either
Listened to this through LP6. Different impressions that I first had while listening to through mobile. I had to listen repeatedly. My impressions are still a bit confusing. On some parts, especially the classical song, the tannoys sounded fuller. But on other parts, it sounded a bit bloated while also have more bass presence(or bass volume). Also i hear better instrument separation on the tannoys in general. The soundstage on the kali sounds a bit wider and it doesn't have that bloated feel in any of the songs while also having less instrument separation. The Tannoy highs on the other hand sound more phasey (could that be due to the placement, room dispersion etc? or could it be the concentric design?) I cannot decide which one has the better tonality overall. Edit : Listened on smaller eve audio monitors. The tannoys seem to have bloated lows and kalis sound more balanced and this time the kalis do sound tonally better.
@@tradehut2782 Haha, I did, but this tests are really not relevant as you hear it from your speakers. Yes, the audio seems to gets messy on the low-end when Tannoy part kicks in, but on my 5''s it's superb on the original audio part. I doubt that it sounds messy on the 8'' and perfectly fine on the 5'', this are Tannoy we're talking about, they have standards. The Gold series are indeed golden, sadly Tannoy is probably in trouble with all this virus thing, as they're made in China. In case you were wondering the build quality is excellent too, they really nailed it with this series on all aspects.
Having worked for 23 years designing loudspeakers, I am completely in awe that this test would be considered valid by anyone. Doing direct "A B" comparisons while sitting in a controlled environment has enough complications. To add in the microphone, recording technique, and then playback equipment (soundcard, amplifier, speakers) of the listener. I am shocked. The awe that I am experiencing is like when a co-worker's dad suggested that we let people audition our speakers at trade shows with headphones so that it could be quieter. We were astonished and laughed at that one. This seems similar.
There will never be a possibility for a completely neutral comparison. Not even live, because it will always depend on the room, the placement, the amp, etc. But i think you can get an impression.
Valid? Depends on what one is listening for. It’s a *relative* comparison, not an absolute test. And it’s not much different from the limitations of actually auditioning speakers in person in a shop, where they’re likely not positioned optimally, and the ‘room’ is a cavernous, high-ceilinged Guitar Center with no acoustic treatment. It’s a ‘relative’ comparison there, too. The point is that something like this gives you small criteria for making a decision, and it’s up to the listener to bring enough sophistication to recognize his own results will vary. But they *shouid* vary in similar ways for both the test subjects.
Tannoy are definitely better speakers for entertainment, but that high end bump and mid scoop make it way too harsh to mix on. I'm going with the Kalis for my ears AND my mixes... granted I've been mixing on harsh sounding BX5s for years now, so I'm just kind of over bright monitors.
@@ДмитрийКузнецов-п8ч Nah, I went to a shop to hear for myself, and looked into several reviews to try and get a solid base... I ended up getting the Kalis and I'm super happy with em
The current crop of near field monitors have grown so good to rival home speakers, a 2-way monitor and they are so much cheaper. I think is because they use much cheaper drivers if they are designed with very high-quality drivers and use better electronics the home monitors will have to watch out. thks for this demo.
I think many of the active near field monitors surpassed budget passive monitors long time ago. I also think that the drivers are comparable if not better in actives, and the money spend on passives goes to premium finish and build quality rather than superior drivers. I will try to do some comparisons between popular passives and actives in the near future to find out which one sounds better, so stay tuned!
@@DSAUDIOreview compare popular home monitors like Klipsch RP600M, Elac Debut and a few more, I think the latest studio monitors will give these models a good run for their money. Many users will be pleasantly surprised. BTW your channel is very different unlike all the other review channels even though you channel demo does has its limitations. The reviewers from other channels just waffle most of them do. Keep up the good work, remember what YOU heard should be similar to your sound demo.👌
@@DSAUDIOreview - with the actives, separate amplifiers for each driver seem the norm. Which implies crossover before the power stage. I guess there is an inherent advantage doing it there, plus each driver has its own damping. As some actives have built-in DACs, this might place the crossover in the digital domain. Would be interesting to see if there are any generalizations in real world listening that can be related to this all.
How is the stereo imaging of the tannoy gold compared to lp8? Soundwise I think both did a good job representing the source. The lp8 sounds fuller in the low mids and tannoys have some more energy in the highs.
Tannoy is a better sounding speaker but do you want to mix on better sounding speakers? I think you could get nearly any speaker these days and do a good job. The spotlight is on you, not the speaker.
Ooooooooh, interesting... I'm feeling like the Kalis have a lot cleaner, tighter bass, but... for my money, I'd just get the Gold *5s* and a subwoofer 🤷🏼♂️😳 Imaging fuh DAYS! lol
The downside of concentrics, which is why some people are not getting into them at any cost. Think about it, the woofer membrane and HF tweeter oscillate at different frequencies all the time. Not in tandem at the same exact frequencies obviously. So over time, what will happen:? The little one (center concentric tweeter driver-membrane) will start to separate from the woofer encapsuling it. We would need to wait 2, 3, 4 years to see how these will hold up over long-term use. I must say, though, just by looking at these, they do not look too sturdy.
