Ataxia Telangiectasia (AT) is a rare inherited disorder in which young children develop severe ataxia (inability to control body movements) as a result of degenration of ‘Purkinje neurons’ in the cerebellum. AT children are highly prone to cancers and usually die before the age of 20. In this episode Professor Tanya Paull talks about research that has revealed a remarkably broad array of functions of ‘ATM’ the gene mutated in AT. The disorder is inherited in a recessive manner such that both parents pass on a defective Atm gene to their child. A major function of ATM is to facilitate repair of damaged DNA. This deficiency increases the likelihood that gene mutations will accumulate that cause cancers. The degeneration of Purkinje neurons may involve DNA damage, oxidative stress and the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria. A better understanding of ATM functions is leading to novel approaches for preventing and treating neurodegenerative disorders and cancers.

Hey Mark, i love the podcast. I love learning about how researchers got into what they are researching, however I have a recommendation. I suggest introducing the guest as a separate segment of the podcast, much like how Andrew Huberman does in his podcasts, and then you can cut to the actual podcast, and proceed to go on with allowing the person to talk about how they got into research and all the rest that you usually do. The reason for this suggestion is that it is a little awkward at the beginning of the podcast when you are introducing them, infront of them, while they can just do that themselves for the audience. Thanks for doing what you do Mark, keep it up!

Hello Dr. Mattson, your book 'Sculptor & Destroyer," is not available in an audio format. Like Rachel Maddow (MSNBC) you are.gifted with a.voice which is a huge asset. Most books are read/heard while "Jogging/Walking/Biking or commuting. Even the College-Students would rather use an audible book over the paper format. Maybe wait on your next book.on "Hormesis," and use your time to record your book "Sculptor and Destroyer," just an idea. Shaw

Thanks Shaw. The publisher will not generate an audio version until the book sells 10K copies. Hopefully this will happen.
