I am the descendant of many of the Spaniard colonizers that came in the late 1400's to early 1500's. Most of whom were Jews fleeing the Spanish inquisition according to Stan Hordes former New Mexico state Historian as well as many Inquisitional archives. We keep much of the Jewish traditions calling them Catholic Friday night prayers. One of my ancestors was a Doctor who worked with Louis Pasteur and saved the lives of many Indian children and families when the small pox killed many. Another historical fact is we had the first Thanksgiving 100 years before the pilgrims. The natives hid us from the Inquisition when it followed us to NM and set up shop in the city of holy faith. We later hid them from the Gov. So much rich history that is well documented but hidden. Thanks for the video

Interesting that Jewish people would take on Catholicism when it is not any part of their practices but many of them are forbidden according to the Torah/Old Testament-in Jewish faith. Wondering how this happened!

@@tulsiannerose8810 when you’re facing death and the torture of the church barbarians, you do what you need to in order to exist. That’s why they’re called crypto Jews. Externally they took on catholic traditions while continuing their Sefardic customs within the privacy of their homes.

Add The Millicent Rogers Museum to your list if you're in the area. It's on the north side just before the turn-off to get to the bridge. Worth the small price of admission to see one of the greatest collections of Native American and Hispanic artifacts. Also, have lunch or dinner at Orlando's. Probably the best restaurant in Taos.

My brother moved from Chicago land to Rancho De Taos ten years ago. I hope to go out and visit him soon. Your video gave me some good ideas. I hiked the sand dunes in CO that are formed as the wind carrying the sand hits the Sangre de Christo (blood of Christ) mountains. I did not know that they continued into NM. I can sense that it is a magical place. "Angel Fire" is the prettiest name for a town ever!

You left out FLY FISHING! - drive an hour (or less) in ANY direction from Taos and there's fishing. There also some great guide companies. A couple provide equipment, most don't. I use Blue Yonder FF because they provide everything - all I need is a license. I never visit without fishing or floating as rafting in the Gorge is an amazing way to spend the day as well.

The last weekend in October is a Taos Balloon Festival much smaller and more quaint from the Albuquerque Balloon festival. Take a 1/2 day, full day or 3-4 day trip down the Rio Grand in a raft. Go visit the Earth homes just west of Taos. They are off the grid and thriving in the desert. On the way there stop and admire the Rio Grand Gorge Bridge which crosses over the Rio Grand.

It’s because NM is at a higher elevation and gets the summer monsoon rains that miss Nevada and most of Arizona. New Mexico may be a desert but Nevada / Southwest Arizona feels like the surface of Venus to me. No vegetation, completely barren, dry, soul-crushingly hot and almost lifeless.

The cost of living is insane pretty much everywhere in northern New Mexico, mostly because of the tourists. I’m grateful that they come and enjoy the area, boosting our economy, but they also drive up the cost of living so much. I’m not “from” NM either, but I do live and work here-this isn’t a vacation destination for me. We have to do something to create more high-paying opportunities or reduce housing costs…or both.

The Earthship site out of town a few miles begun by Architect Michael Reynolds is where I was headed in 1996. If you go do a little research on the technology used so you can better appreciate the details and ask questions. They are eager to show off their beautiful Earthships and describe it's features. Originally using old tires packed tight with local soil using sledge hammers you can imagine how heavily labor intensive construction is. Truly, Earth Ships. The people live there so make an Appointment to tour them. This is beyond the scope of the video here but you showed a lot I didn't get to see in 1996.

There are definitely people in Taos who hate outsiders, the Native population most clearly (and with good historical reason). Bigger, more diverse cities out West tend to be the most accepting. Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City, Portland (Oregon), San Francisco. Taos is a wonderful place and I adore it, but it can be challenging if you’ve moved from somewhere else. Many locals have roots here for centuries if not millennia.

Taos first called me to it (for a visit) in 1998. It's my special place and I've had magical things happen there. I always park off Kit Carson Road at a free lot there. The Rio Pueblo de Taos that runs through Hacienda de Martinez supposedly comes from sacred Blue Lake up on Grandma Taos Mountain that Taos Pueblo members can't access. So, I do the best I can for some of Blue Lake's healing and gather water from the Rio Pueblo on the Martinez property.

Beautiful part of the country. Hiked Philmont Scout Ranch in the summer of 1969. They woke us up to watch the moon landing on a granny TV early in the morning. Years later I spent one night at the Arroyo Seco just north of Taos. It was a unique hostel experience where I ate weird hippy food with a cult like group that was also spending the night there. Is there a Taos humm?

My guess is the leaves will be likely brown by that time, this was Oct 12-14 last year, but it all depends on the weather! The area is still beautiful any time of year!

If not one among ten things in this video , add the same in the next video . .. A visitor who visited Taos on July 3 , 2022 Sunday . 🇮🇳🇺🇸👍🙏

Swifty Travels, can one do all these without a car, just walking around ? Also ,how to get to Taos from Santa Fe( not driving)airport?
@SwiftyTravels
@SwiftyTravels Год назад
it's definitely not ideal, I'm not sure there is a reliable shuttle from Santa Fe to Taos, I googled it and found a couple of options. If you stay near the historic plaza in Taos there will be plenty to see, but things such as the gorge bridge are outside of town. I'm not sure if these are still running on the published schedule but you can check www.riometro.org/217/Bus-Connections and www.ncrtd.org/. Renting a car would be best

When was this why isn't there snow. I'm going the 26th and the 27 it says it's going to snow. Is there parks to slide and play with the kids for free

This was filmed in October. Taos has recently had snow. There is a playground at Kit Carson park in the center of town and I’m sure there are more around town.

Hello, as someone who was born and raised and still lives in Taos, there is a Fred baca park, a kit Carson park, there is also a bowling alley called gutters and a youth and family center with community swimming all year long and ice skating in the winter and roller skating in spring summer and fall

I just cam back from trip to Taos and it was certainly not what I expected. The pros: The views and nature are absolutely breath taking. The Farmhouse Cafe is going to be the best food spot close to town. The CIDs and Cellar Market/Liquor corner is a good place to resupply on rations. The plaza has few gems for coffee/lunch but nothing that stands out. Cons: Roads/parking are terrible, high crime and the food for the most part is extremely overrated and overpriced. The beer is warm everywhere you go EXCEPT for the liquor store. If you don't have to stop here DO NOT!! If you have to check into a airbnb or Hotel El Monte for just the night. My advice is wait until you get outside of Taos. I couldn't get out of that place fast enough!!! I wish I was embellishing but unfortunately I am not. I had a lot of high hopes for the place, but was sorely disappointed.

Hi there! Sorry for the delayed response. I have only driven near the Laguna Pueblo on I-40 never gone through. Do not expect much in terms of nightclubs is my guess, but I'm sure there are bars, in the town and inside the restaurants. I am not a nightlife person so I truly don't know!!! Sorry!

i dont live in the usa, so i dont have a dog in the fight about us states when it comes to beauty, but i have to say in my opinion that the southern states are the most beautiful, new Mexico, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia... Florida and California seem to be overbuilt and with less interesting views...

They can't fly a flag 24/7 unless congress says they can?
@SwiftyTravels
@SwiftyTravels 2 года назад
Apparently so.. I was surprised as well. I am no expert but there is a US Flag code. I know now you can fly flags at night as long as they are illuminated. I’m not sure why this one required a special designation maybe it’s not illuminated. 🤷‍♀️

@@SwiftyTravels sort of contradictory to the whole “freedom” thing, isn’t it? The flag stands for freedom but the freedom doesn’t apply to the flag itself.
