Everyone interpreted it that way, but the bugler admitted that he slipped up because it was cold, he was nervous, and his mouth was dry. For years after though, people would play the same wrong note at funerals to emulate JFK's funeral.
Until the day I, too, leave this earth, I will never forget the reaction of the German people to the death of President Kennedy. They were, if anything, as grief-stricken as we Americans. I was a young soldier stationed in Frankfurt, Germany at the time.
Might be because JFK wrote a book called Why England slept? Or maybe because he said he was a Berliner? Or maybe, just maybe it was because of this: "Hitler will emerge from the hatred that surrounds him now as one of the most significant figures who ever lived". The Germans knew Hitler as the man who rebuilt the country after WW1. And while many remember the Great crash of 1929, not many remember the great crash of 1923. Germans had to pay 250 Marks for a loaf of bread in January. And in November the same year a loaf of bread costed 201 BILLION MARK. When Hitler took over power he helped the ordinary people. Hence why they all stood behind him and fought until their death. Unfortunately that war is still too recent to be discussed in a real discussion. And it still is forming politics and opinions to this day. Probably because people are still being indoctrinated with what the Victors wrote. Sorry. I wont thank you for your service. Not because i disrespect you as a person. But because i disrespect the entire idea of "Service". What "Service" did you give? Germany was basically flattened and thrown back into the stoneage. Every city bombed to smithereens. Some say to win the war, as if that won the war. Some say because all of those people deserved to die. But they weren't all Na...zi's living in those cities. Heck, many of em weren't even politically active at all. They was just living their lives in the system created. I do not see how this was Liberating Europe at all. In fact: If i look at Britain today, it is a mess. I wonder: If the soldiers of those days who stormed the beaches of Normandië could see Britain as it is today, would they still go up those beaches? Bankrupting Britain and basically the rest of the so called Western World? And for what? But again, that is a discussion which is not allowed obviously. And i would be surprised if this comment sticks considering censorship here on RU-vid. Imagine that: People often say that it was the Na....zi's who burned books and censored things. So i guess the real Na.....zi's never lost WW2 then, right? After all, just look at the world today. RU-vid etc etc . It's so funny.
Thanks to the CIA, Johnson, and the rest of those bastards. They not only murdered Kennedy that day but also what could have been a wonderful future of the United States.

The brief out-of-place clipped note is the sounding high F at 2:36. Army Bugler Keith Clark then quickly recovered down onto the correct sounding D note in a split second. He was fortunate that it happened early on in the second phrase of the call since he performed the remainder of Taps in an exemplary and moving manner, even commanding that high F note for three long seconds at 2:59 - 3:01 which is the climax near its end. (The F note is the sounding pitch but it would be written as a G note since he is playing a Bb trumpet and what is written sounds a whole step lower for that instrument)
@@CharlotteFairchild He's playing a standard Bb trumpet (a written C note sounds as Bb). Taps is written for the triad notes of a C Major chord (C, E & G) and those three notes sound as the triad notes of a Bb Major chord (Bb, D & F). A easy key to determining the key of a bugle call is its last note. In the case of Taps, it is the sounding key of Bb Major with Bb as the last note sustained from 3:15 - 3:22.
Well put Charles. As a trumpet player myself, am agreeing with your remarks completely. What isn't known to the public is this, It was wicked cold out that day and is quite possible that the corporal's mouthpiece may have chilled to the point that it was sticking to frozen lip flesh. The bugler had been up and at Arlington Cemetery since 4:30 am that day. Lastly, The President's death weighed heavily on the bugler's mind. And I don't care how good of a trumpet player you are? This is not an easy piece to play flawlessly. As an incredible pressure is placed upon the musician. He never knows for certain exactly when he'll get called on to play and as such he's never really warmed up. Worse still, The whole world knows how this tune is supposed to go. As such this adds to the general nervousness a brass player goes through. The fact that the small mistake happened early in the bugle call must have weighed heavily on his already nervous mind. After all, he KNEW that his music was being heard by hundreds of millions of people. I have played the piece publicly a dozen or so times and fortunately never released a true "clam", but this is because I've been lucky so far.
The President is technically also the Commander in Chief, the highest office in the military lol. He would have gotten the salute and taps even if he didn't serve outside his term. In other words, even Trump would theoretically get a Military funeral if he died in office, and may get one after he leaves office and he's still alive, though he doesn't deserve any such honor.

Eisenhower for infrastructure, Teddy Roosevelt for conservationism, Lincoln for uniting the nation, George Washington for being the first, etc. The three worst are assuredly trump, reagan, and Hoover. No one fucked up the country as much as those three. Kennedy isn’t on either list though. He genuinely didn’t achieve much. He just got assassinated and it was caught on video so it went viral. Good president but not the greatest or worst lol.
My buddy and I were on liberty in NB Yokosuka when that tragic event occurred. We at a restaurant when a SP opened the door and shouted Tom's that we were to return to our place of duty(USS HORNET CVS-12). We arrived back on board to a very somber atmosphere where we were told that the President had been assasinated in Texas. Shocking news and the word was that were on DEFCON 1 status. I, for one, just couldn't believe that it was true. Who the hell would do that to the President! Took me a couple of days to calm down. A days that I will never forget.
The bugler was actually relieved of his position after that, which is pretty sad if you know the story behind it. My trumpet professor was serving during this time and knew the bugler. It turns out that the bugler had stood guard by the gravesite since 7am that day, and the first time he got to play on that cold day was the call.

Even though JFK was democrat I heard he was a great president. I also heard that democrats back then were not near as bad as they are today. RIP John F. Kennedy.
Yep, I'm a dem and I can admit we've gone to complete shit But back when we had people that did stuff and stood on a platform that wasn't just virtue signaling such as Kennedy I miss the glory days of both parties
This is the only time in history Taps was player with an extra note. Or at least as far as i can recall (plus what i have discovered researching it a bit) And for obvious reasons there was an extra note. Because even the Bugle player was crying, knowing fully well they had lost a great man. Lincoln is not beneath an eternal flame. Other presidents who were assassinated are not laid to rest underneath an eternal flame. JFK was. Why? Well, it should be obvious if one is interested in knowing history, true History. Not what we are told today, obviously. Because most of what we are told today is his story. The story of the Victor. His Story. And has nothing to do with the truth.

I am about to be a US Army soldier, watching this made me cry, and I’m a Republican, it’s just that JFK had all Conservative values and was a great President in general, a War Hero, and many other things. I think today, he would definitely vote for President Trump, and be Republican, because the way I see it, is Republicans always wanted democracy, while democrats like socialism and had been racist and obnoxious and made lies to immigrants saying they had to forget their original language and just speak English, I think that’s communism right. Isn’t America supposed to be the land of the free, I say as long as you know English, the 1st Amendment comes in handy when you want to speak and learn other languages, and also, PS, the election was rigged, everyone knows it, Fight For Trump! 2021!
If you're going into the Army then know that the philosophy of the military is very simple: Follow the leader. On active duty, your words would be considered subversive in that they would be interpreted as undermining the chain of command since the new president is the commander-in-chief. If you want to serve, keep your mouth shut and obey the lawful orders given to you. If you are too disillusioned with the results of the recent presidential election and seek to voice that opinion, it would be best for you not to serve at this time.
