They are singing the romanian soul using ancient and new instruments, they are gypsyes born in communist Romania but they chose to perpetuate romanian valors in music performing Doina , Hora and Brau .Musical instruments were created by humans to emulate human speak : in that Doina , the soloist is singing/talking to Nature and having a dialogue with mountains , creatures,rivers,trees ...we romanians used to have a deep connection to nature.Doina is sharing your soul to nature and Universe.Hora is connecting to comunity by dancing holding hands and spinning in circles. Brau is a man's dance , a pride dance meant to show of ur manhood in front of comunity.These are romanian traditions and are about to fade in oblivion unless another Taraf will resurect them.

It's true. The music is sung by the romanian gipsies but it is not music composed by the gipsies. I could direct you to some let's say authentic gipsy music (from Romania). Listen to Clejani if you want the taraf of outlaws (haidouk means outlaw). That music has some gipsy in it while the songs posted here do not. That was my point.

@MrManushe this is definitely Romanian music, but the taraf orchestra has a gipsy show off spectacular specific turn... as many of them are gypsies but... the fluier (pied piper :) ) is an ancestral shepard's instrument and the type of songs (Doina, hora and briu, as musical forms) are deeply folk and impossible to found elsewhere but in Romania
Hora is a dance done in a circle holding hands again Romanian, and Briu is another Romanian dance that is done holding your Hips, ...Briu meens Hips..... is all Romanian

They are romani from Romania... Romania is one of the places in eastern Europe where Roma and Jews had an easier time, they're not racist (or not AS racist) as many other European countries. That's why both Rumanian and romanian gypsy music styles are so developed there: because the two populations were integrated and they mingled over hundreds of years. Go Romania!
the flute is such a simple instrument, just some holes in a reed, but so hard to play it well. truly masterful. gypsies influenced so much of the world's music. shukar.
