Target closing 2 Seattle stores citing theft and safety concerns

Target will close nine stores in four states, including two in Seattle, saying that theft and organized retail crime have threatened the safety of its workers and customers.
Target announced the Ballard and U District stores will close, effective Oct. 21, in addition to three stores in Portland, Oregon, one in East Harlem, New York, and three in San Francisco.
While the store closings account for just a fraction of the 1,900 stores Target operates nationwide, the move is significant. It underscores the big challenges that retailers like Target face in reducing theft in stores as they wrestle with protecting their workers and customers while trying to serve the community, particularly low-income and minority groups who rely on the local stores for necessities.

The entire story isn't here. The Northgate Target has had many, many more calls to the police this year than the Ballard or U-District locations and yet it is not closing. Perhaps declining sales may be more to blame, due to the 20+ Target stores in the Seattle metro area, saturating the community with too many Targets.

@josephwallace8875 Lots of people care because when petty theft causes a massive retail franchise to close up and leave, there is a very serious crime wave ruining the city. Other companies take notice, and if they also decide to close up, Seattle, and the greater western WA area all suffer.

People are just going to buy more from Amazon or other online stores. People don't go to these stores because of their quality goods, go because it's the cheapest they can find. Local stores can't compete with cheap Chinese shit.

That’s a terrible location for a target and it was never stocked. I just go to Fred Meyer down the rode. I think that’s the reason they closed it. They aren’t closing the downtown one which is in a worse neighborhood

I can't predict how my comment will age, but I think the future if retail is through Amazon. It's already a major factor, so why not just market your junk through a remote service and not tak eterh loss of a bunch of loser live customers who decide to just steal. According to the police theft reports that target receives less theft than every other business around it. It has nothing to do with theft. It's just a convenient way to try to save face and not make the community think that they are the monsters they really are.

You aren't really smart are you when people steal from the store and the police don't arrest anybody and the criminal justice system doesn't prosecute anybody they don't call and make reports anymore so theft is skyrocketing it's just not being reported to the police because the police won't do anything about it
