But surely the band deserved to be treated as secondary guests and told she can "leave Nightwish without previous warning", what a hypocrite. The fact is: she is replaceable, the composer isn't. There are many good generic opera singers out there. Tuomas didn't choose to keep with the opera style out of respect for her.

Tuomas said in a interview that "the reason they didn't get other operatic trained singer was because no one in the planet could compare to Tarja even if the singer was good". He literally said that word by word. Also, Tuomas composed more albuns during the 9 years with Tarja (where he said he composed them specially for her voice) than in almost 20 yrs without her, with all their best albuns still being considered the ones prior to her leaving and the one immediately after she left (full of references to her). Not to mention the ONE thing that set them apart in their golden era was much more Tarja's voice than Tuomas songs if we're being honest here.

Almost as if she was the reason for him composing like this (as you said). I think picking sides here is not appropriate as this was their own karma being resolved. I was 12, but never saw them live, except only Tarja later. It was my biggest regret for a long time. I still remember reading the small headline and a short text about it in the local teen entertainment magazine I read at the time. It said "Tarja kicked out!". I was devastated like someone died and grieved it like nothing else before. I too didn't talk with anyone about it, as my friends didn't like NW and thought Tarja's singing is annoying...

I had similar experience. I was on Deep Purple's last gig in Helsinki 1993, at front row. It was great gig to my 18 yo standards, but i noticed how Ritchie didn't want to interact with others in the band, he just did his part. Nobody knew it was the end for Mark 2, Ritchie's last one with DP. Oh the memories. :)

I feel the worst For Anette actually .She was pregnant in the hospital ,when they kicked her out . Tarja is a strong woman who had her Manager and husband who supported her after this Bad time.but Anette had nobody who holds her back in the Band. I also saw Few Interviews From Anette back then when she got kicked,she kinda had Depressions too . Actually floor was just there For Touring with the Band .but then they decide to kick Anette completly out wich is not fair. The Albums and some Singles with Anette were massiv hits.anette and tarja really Make nightwish sugcessful . Floor is For sure the best Singer of all Them but she dosent bring her own music or Stil . She still Covers almost only nightwish Songs. I never heared 1 single with floor actually released

It mainly came down to money, royalties and Tarja's husband effectively holding the band hostage. She herself wasn't necessarily who Nightwish had the problem with as much as her husband/manager but he fueled her ego and she shot herself in the foot for it as she had already stated she was going to leave. That being said, it was really unprofessional how they went about this and even worse what they did to Anette.

yeah I kinda stopped listening to Nightwish when Tarja left, I listened one more album after that and it wasnt the same anymore and I have never listened to their new albums anymore , for me, Tarja basically made this band, I know who Floor is btw as well, I have listened her in ReVamp and I am sure that she is WAYYY better than Anette but I just prefer Tarja and also I dont want to pay tickets to this band concerts anymore after how they kicked out Tarja..one of the founders of the band and they didnt even tell her before the "End of the era" was finished , they did her sooo dirty.. poor thing gave everything on that stage and next day she sees letter like this...for everyone to see ..ofcourse she cried

Floor is a great vocalist and we shouldn’t talk about her ability. It’s just Tuomas has been drifting away in his fantasy dreams. The music taste since Floor joined the band has gotten weird. Nightwish’s power and darkness have gradually disappeared, and the 2 recent albums with Floor is a shadow of its glory. There was no charisma and power anymore, but they sound like a fantasy and orchestral sort of songs, probably like Two Steps From Hells. I don’t dislike any of the 3 front women, but it’s Tuomas himself is sleeping with his Peter Pan dreams. Imaginaerum was a great album, Tuomas probably forgot how brilliant it was.

@@MinhNguyen-ff6xf I agree. Early Nightwish had a dark mystery and fantasy element to it and Tarja's operatic vocals brought it all together beautifully. With Anette, he explored a more folky vibe, but still kept the dark fantasy element. Now with Floor, it seems to have turned from all that was into this whole nature loving humdrum almost hippie crap. Don't get me wrong, I think Floor is an amazing singer, I simply do not like the new Nightwish sound

Although I agree with you that the Spirit of Nightwish lies within Tuomas, but Tarja was the gateway through which that Spirit could communicate with us. That's through songs at least. The movie, Imaginaerum, which Tuomas co-wrote, is no less than his poetical work in songs. His mind is an enigma. His psych is... well, the movie puts it nicely... Back to Tarja. I should say that even if she was singing some Gibberish, she would still possess the ability to reduce me to near-tears... Back to Nightwish in general... what's going on?? Tarja was kicked out, then Anette... What are they searching for??? Well, I can understand Tuomas as an artist, a poet, who can fall to his own romantic and ideal views, (eh, don't get me in the wrong way), and initiate the dismissal of the two... but already two? But changing vocalist is the hardest thing, especially for the devoted fans. But in the end it's up to Tuomas I suppose, since he started it. Who knows what he is thinking about... "The show must go on" "Nightwish is a rollercoaster ride that must not stop" Something along those lines... but tragically, everything has an end. I would maybe not be a musician today if I were so mesmerized by their music during chilhood. I only have love for them.

Whatever that happened between this people, the guy's attitude was a demonstration of cowardice. I'm brazilian and while reading Toumas' latter at the point he mentioned "cultural differences", the hole thing made no sense to me. Sounded like he was trying to say that one of her mistakes was get in a relationship with "that type of people", if you know what I mean. This combined with things said about the band management and what they did to Anette years later, et cetera ad aeternum... I just can't thrust this guys.

Lex Marie I think firing someone from a band like that is kinda ugly. But I see his point, she was not in the band in the last years. I saw that coming in 2004, Tarja was singing well over the band but I saw there was no future with her. If you have seen End of an Era dvd, Tuomas is was so disappointed of his actions when firing Vänskä as a bass player (but who would remember a bass player, except me :D), it soon continued with firing Tarja. When watching that dvd, it was disturbing that Tarja barely showed in it. It must have been as hard for Tuomas as it was for her, but he is still the brainchild of Nightwish.

jannexorz For me personally I don't cry a tear over Tarja. Her bad diva behavior caused the band to finally lose patience with her and Tuomas dropped her. She was the cause of that not the others. You can hear it in the way she talks in this presser, very arrogant at times. She has no one to blame but herself. But now comes Floor Jansen, after Tarja the biggest voice in the Epic/Symphonic Metal genre. I have always loved her voice. Unlike Tarja's old woman vibrato, Floor's vibrato is modulated perfectly for my ears. I don't miss Tarja any more. :) And for you fans who were surprised at her firing, the last tour was called "End Of An Era". That should have told you something eh?

jannexorz That's if you seriously only believe Tuomas's side, but the band is on their 3rd singer for a reason. I do think the thing about her husband may be true, because the way he was answering questions on Tarja's site towards the fans. Many think he's controlling and he tried to isolate her from the men in the band, especially Tuomas. It was also always assumed the Tuomas had a thing for Tarja, but since she ended up with her husband, he was getting jealous. So yeah, there's more to just Tuomas's side, even if her husband was a part of her being isolated from the other band members so much.

Kewl Beans The truly disgusting aspect of it all was not so much they did it in a letter. It was doing it in a "open letter" on the internet and it was written specifically in a way to humiliate her and to try and turn fans against her. Tuomas knew exactly what he was doing when he wrote that letter and he specifically hit on hot button issues to inflame the fans against her. If that wasn't enough, they continued bashing her and even wrote songs doing so for the next album. Then they published the book which is supposed to be a "biography" of the band, but is really just another opportunity to bash and blame Tarja and her husband because that's pretty much it's main focus. So, it was all a concerted effort to throw her under the bus and drag her name through the mud. Why? I believe there were 2 reasons. The first of course being revenge because she fell in love with another man. The second was publicity and hype which would drive sales of the next album. If you think about and look back at the way things unfolded, this looks more and more like the true reason for doing this and creating this huge media circus with the "open letter". If the motive had simply been to do what's best for the band, handling it in this way would not have made sense as it only would serve create more hard feelings and animosity. The songs bye bye beautiful and master passion greed are the smoking gun here, as they clearly show an effort to cash in on the controversy.

Oh for sure, both were at fault. It caused a lot of hurt/grief on both parts. They definitely should have done it differently. I think Tuomas hated himself for it, which is why Poet and the Pendulum exists. I'm unsure about what happened with Anette, but I am unsure it was similar even if it looks like it. I'm happy with their current line up. It's unfortunate that things went about, but it made them grow, hopefully into better people and into a better and more tight knit band.

Найтвиш это в первую очередь композитор - Томас, и музыку он по прежнему пишет шикарную, плюс сейчас на вокале Флор Янсен. А у Тарьи есть только голос, ни одной песни хоть немного по музыке дотягивающей до Найтвиш я у неё не слышал, так - средний уровень, не высшая лига.

Ну и зря. Тарья теперь ничего толкового не выпустила, тогда как без нее Найтвиш стал куда более известной группой. Флор лучше подходит на роль вокалиста в метал группе. Да, пока была Аннет - это было "не то", но сейчас - они превзошли изначальных себя - это факт. Негры реперы даже слушают теперь Найтвиш - настолько они популярны.

I think her "Stargazers" and especially "Ghost Love Score" are pretty much epic. Some other songs like "I wish I had an Angel" are less operatic, but more metal. I would always say that Floor was ideal for After Forever and Tarja was ideal for Nightwish, and same as Tarja would be worse for AF, Floor is worse for NW.

I researched this situation very recently. I'm an 18 year's old brasilian teenager, so... there is this blog that covered the hole thing and I readed the posts in chronological order, it includes Toumas and Tarja letters. Discrimination is exactly what I felt when he talked about cultural differences.

She's a Leo. Drama is her identity. Which is why she loves opera.

But, yes they did. And the band still exists, better than ever, at least for me.

Tarja was fired because she wanted to start a solo career and did not want to take part in rehearsals for live performances and it reduced the quality of the performances .Marcelo used Tarja to tighten up more money and cause controversy. Anette was fired because she didn’t accept Alize and Elise and Floor she didn’t accept the rest of the tour as a successor. Tarja apologized for an open letter intended for fans to explain the difference and its reasons.

That's why she told them in private in that dec2004 meeting she wanted to leave but would do one more album and one more tour. She also agree to keep it private that she was going to leave. She did all this out of consideration of how it would effect them. Even though they were giving her such a hard time about her husband who they disliked greatly, she was still being considerate to them. Furthermore doing this made her vulnerable and allowed them to do what they did with the open letter and huge drama play they created. Clearly she was doing this for them and clearly she trusted them by putting herself in a position of disadvantage. What did they do in return? They exploited it to their advantage and used it against her. This alone shows the character of both sides and which side is dishonest and conniving.

The key word there is " background" which can include culture, ideology and political leanings, none of which are race and all of which involve personal choice.

Tuomas is very talented musician and lyricist. I got drawn to Nightwish because if this woman but the music is just as superb. This woman was anyway going to leave Nightwish..she is crying because she wasn't allowed to leave on her own terms. Tarja is super talented but got greedy with old mates.

She wanted to quit. Since 2 years before her departure, she was talking about her wish to start a solo career. During this time she didn't miss a single opportunity to say that during interviews, which looked bad for the band as it sounded like she didn't want to be on Nightwish for much longer. Then one day she made it official to the band and said that she was going to leave for good... so Tuomas was like: "Well if you really gonna leave, you better as well leave right now"... I understand both sides of the story... she gave the notice to leave the band, the band felt betrayed and decided to kick her out at once... Imagine if your girlfriend come to you and say, we gonna break out next month... You won't have any motivation to stay with her in the next week... not even the next day.. everything become pointless at the moment of the notice comes... I think a band relationship is not like a normal job that you can mark on the calendar the day a employee will leave and the day the next one starts.

Thanks for the information Thiago..I was unaware she was so determined to leave the band. Well, I am looking forward to the new album and I am sure Floor will do a great job...she is a great singer and performer.

" Sorry, but that's simply not true. No where in any interview before she was fired did Tarja ever mention leaving nightwish. That's simply one more of the lies that nightwish fans keep repeating over and over again that have no basis in fact whatsoever. It was only in a private meeting with her band members that she revealed her intention to leave and that was only a few months before her dismissal. She never revealed that to the public and that's a fact. Furthermore you're entirely wrong about tuomas asking her to go ahead and leave. The fact is they asked her to stay for one more album and one more tour which would end around 2007 and she agreed to stay and to not make that information public and she did NOT. Go ahead and find us an interview, before her dismissal, where she states she's going to leave nightwish. You cannot do so, because no such interview exists. That's simply one of the many lies that have been propagated by the band and their fans. Think about it. If this was true the "open letter" wouldn't have come as such a surprise to everyone and would not have had the dramatic effect it did. The reason the open letter was such a big news story was because it was totally unexpected. Furthermore, the accusations made in the letter would not have carried as much weigh because it would have sounded as if the guys were simply mad she was leaving. Anyway, you have the facts all wrong. Tarja never publicly expressed her desire to leave until after she was fired in the open letter. It would have actually worked to her advantage had she done so. This shows that she gave much more consideration to her band mates than they showed to her and that was her downfall. No good deed goes unpunished and that's the case here.

It is true, Stefan. I saw it. It's not one of the lies that fans keep repeating. I even saw in a magazine cover. She may not have said she wanted to leave the band, but in multiple occasions she talked about starting a solo career or even going into classic music. Of course she could keep both jobs, but the anyone could feel what she really meant.

It's also true that in dec 2004, she informed her band mates, PRIVATELY, that she would leave the band somewhere around 2007 after they finished the next album and tour to promote that album. She agreed to stay until then. She also agreed not to reveal this publicly and she did NOT. What is NOT true is that she ever released this information to the public. Therefore, it is a lie to says that she was always talking about leaving the band in interviews. If that were true you could find interviews where she said this. If you think you can do this, be my guest and provide us a link.You cannot because they do not exist. Therefore it is a lie to say she was always saying in interviews she would leave the band because she never said that in any interview or anywhere publicly. If you've got proof otherwise let's see it. It doesn't even make any sense to say she was always talking about leaving the band publicly. If this were true, it would have rendered the "open letter" ineffective. If the fans had known she was already leaving the letter would have looked like "sour grapes" and the motives of the band would have been obvious. It would have looked like they were simply mad because she was leaving. It would also lessened the impact from a dramatic point of view and lessened the media circus surrounding the whole thing. It would have actually worked to her advantage to have announced it publicly, but she did not out of consideration to her band mates. Then they turn around and used this against her and to their advantage to stab her in the back. That show what scumbags the guys really are. It's also untrue what you said about tuomas telling her to go ahead and leave when she informed them in dec 2004 she wanted to eventually leave. In fact, just the opposite is true, that's why she agreed to stay until after the next album and tour because they pretended as if they didn't want her to leave, all the while plotting against her behind her back. Think about it. If this had been the case she would have left immediately and they could not have surprised her with the open letter after the hartwall arena concert at the end of the tour. They deliberately lied to her and pretended like they didn't want her to leave immediately so they could perform their low down cowardly deed. This also shows that the guys are nothing but a bunch of low down dirty scum bags!
