Sorry, I had answered some of the below questions, but when I switched from a personal to business account, they were all wiped. Addressing a few FAQs... I ordered the belt from eBay. I just googled "Tascam 488 belt" and picked a supplier. The buttons themselves were worn out. I discuss it in Part II and perform a temporary fix. I am not an expert on these, just a general fix-it guy.
Nice video! I replaced the belt (and later motor too) on my 488 as well. It wasn’t too hard, once I discovered which screws I needed to remove, because I was a little nervous not to mess with the heads alignment

I had the same issue. I replaced the belt when I noticed the three blinking lights. You also need to grease or oil the bearings as stated below by Sam. My came back to life perfectly worked like a charm for months now I have a bad channel 3 input so I'll be taking it apart again.
Under the transport, remove the cover attached to the little motor. There you will find 3 plastic gears, the 3rd one will be yellowed and most likely cracked. Replace it and you'll be good to go! Search for "Tascam C Gear" for your replacement. Good luck!
Thank you for posting this video! It was really helpfull. After I had seen it three times I changed belt and gear on mij 488 MKII and got it running again. I bought the gear in the Netherlands. 20 euros shipping inc. It needed a bit of trimming because it was just a little too high but now it works just fine.
The capstan belt P/N 5800735500 for $10.10 plus tax and shipping. Which can be ordered by emailing Tascam service and repairs. They are slow to reply though.
Hi there, just changed my belt thanks to this vid. I still have an issue with speed fluctualting, the capstans feel stiffer than i expcted when turned by hand, how to replace those?
Question: Before you started your fix were the play/record lights flashing? I'm not sure if I have a motor problem (which as far as I can tell they've stopped making them). I would love if it was only a belt issue.

Hey Phillip, i have one question. My portarack is starting in the right Speed, but it is slowing down very fast and stays at this Speed. Is it maybe the belt or could it be the Motor. First i thought it would be the tape but it is not. Thanks
Geez, I can't remember. It's been a while since I worked on it and it's back to the owner now so I can't check. From what I remember, it was always running and totally silent, but don't quote me on that.
Would like to know where to get the belt for a 488 Tascam and what the part number is as well as the deer the phone number and the part number good to see somebody take one apart and put it back together can't seem to find anybody in my area
@@binariomanI opened the mixer and took measurements with the naked eye ... so I went there and bought several belts with approximate measurements and one will definitely work. I paid guy but it worked lol
