Well, I managed to keep this one down to two videos. In part 2, I figure out what many people already know, which is that a certain plastic gear in the tape mechanism becomes brittle with age and needs to be replaced.
Then, just when I think I'm done, I discover a bad switch and show how I fixed it with salvaged parts.
To order your own replacement gear, contact Sam: skywavebe@sbcglobal.net As of publishing, they are $30 plus shipping and availability fluctuates according to stock on hand.
You may also be able to find NOS Tascam gears on eBay for a similar price, but considering they are the same material and age as the ones that are crumbling, I personally felt better getting a modern replacement.
Not to mention, I'd rather support a small business that made an investment in maintaining these machines than support a guy who probably bought out Tascam's remaining stock of gears and jacked up the price 20x for his "trouble".

Wanted to say thank you! Because of your video and Sam's gear replacement, I was able to fix my beloved 488! Hoping to get another 10 years out of that machine :)

Holy shit this is amazing. Not only did my Tascam 488 mkii display the same issue (not running tape, play pause and record lights blinking), but my stop button is kinda screwy too. So knowing I can steal the RTZ button to fix that, and buy a brand new gear that won’t break every ten hours of use is amazing. Thank you so much for this video, I was absolutely amazed that I managed to find a video that so perfectly addressed the issues I’m having, which were incredibly disheartening when I discovered them.

I'm in the same boat over here. Thanks for doing the leg work for us! Ordering a gear now // Analog Classics seems to manufacture one too // they call it "Tascam 488 MK2 Gear C Replacement" and sell for about $8. Also the RTZ button is for RETURN TO ZERO i.e. it shuttles your tape back to 0:00 on the counter. Cheers!

To help others with this repair from a person who has done a hundred already. The Grease to use is called Lubriplate 105 and can be had at Amazon but I bought three 10 oz tubes from Skygeeks. They have it at hardware stores too. It does not harden up- all gears should be removed and cleaned with denatured alcohol. I use cotton swabs and an old tooth brush. The oil I use for capstan bearing and motor top bearing is AMSoil 0W30 Signature series synthetic oil. This is the best stuff out that I have found. Grease goes on cleaned shafts and gears as well as a thin layer on the PCB feedback plate. Get rid of 3 in 1 oil it is made for screen doors. The grease they put in these was a damping grease because they found out the gears make too much noise. The Lubriplate will make them move faster and they will be noisy but that is a gear system for you. There is a damping grease I have used on the teeth but it slows things down and it only addresses the noise issue. It is made by Clearco and is a stable silicon oil. grease- last I priced it was $600/ Gallon. They do not sell it in small bottles. Lastly if you do not want big headaches get away from that kind of music.

thanks again for this... although I had to find the parts somewhere else (fairly easily) the machine would have been worthless without this fix... I replaced all the gears and belts and now it runs great!

The feedback plate- the one with gold plated foil patterns needs some Lubriplate 105 very thinly applied too. Do not use 3 in one oil- it is for screen doors. Oil applied to the unit should be a high grade Synthetic oil. In the capstan bearing where the capstan shaft goes in- get AMSOil 10W30 Signature engine oil. This as tested over some years now results in much better wow and flutter figures as well as stable speed. There was a Teac A2000R that gave me a result of .02%wrms wow and flutter with this oil. My shop uses it almost exclusively. Other oils are now used for stainless face plates and screen door hinges. Lubriplate 105 is the grease that should be applied to the gear shafts. Oil will with time migrate out and you will need to go in again. Skywave Tape Deck Repair, Chicago area

Additionally- for those who work on these I am making some extension cables for the cables that are too short to work on these and I am still waiting on some connectors- these will not be for one time repairs but those who work on these all the time. I have no figured the price yet but I will use the first couple of sets on my two benches. If you ever calibrated one of these you will know exactly what I have been dealing with. There are 2 pin, 5 pin ,7 pin and 9 pin JST type cables. I am starting off at 16".

Yes, Gear C is selling world wide at this point for all those models that use them. It is bad grease but also decayed or aged Resin that the gears are made of. I am told we are using a more advanced resin now. These are made at a Machine shop in TN and the cost to set up was near $3000. I was going to say, while you are in the unit you might as well replace all the non reactive tact switches- I just did on a 424 Mk II. I believe either Digikey or Mouser has these switches as I order 100 of them in one of my order there. They are called tactile switches. If you need more help or a gear- skywavebe@sbcglobal.net will get you to me. Sam,

Awesome video man! I just got a 488 tascam. It plays too fast then tried to eat the tape. I’m excited to see it is something I can fix myself.

Please what was the size of the capstan belt? Inside circumference, width, thickness? Thanks for the wonderful repair videos, you do good!

The RTZ is a button used more often for editing. It means Return To Zero. Best to oil the capstan with AMS synthetic oil as this is much more advanced than the oil they used. Tact switches can be had from Mouser or Digikey.

It is in the owners manual- it helps to get back to the reset point where zero was set. In some machine there is also a Cue point and in that they can have STC. Same thing opposite of the Zero point. Some larger system have several memory points. If you are in the Chicago area, I will make a Technician of you.

Very cool series again Mark! Did you manage to find resources for replacement parts for the 388 as well?
@dbo514
@dbo514 6 лет назад
Yeah those are my thoughts as well. It seems like many 388 owners have a couple spare units as well...I like the idea of digging parts out of old appliances! The coffee maker idea is great. In general I've been thinking a lot about ways to ensure tape decks and multitracks can work for decades to come (in terms of repairing capstan motors, relapping heads, fixing and replacing electronics without access to original parts etc.) Obviously most parts are not being made anymore, but I guess there are still a few people making replacements but they're either expensive or impossible to find. With the advent of 3D printing, I guess it would be possible to make plastic part replacements for just about anything. Motors can be rewired and brought back to life, jrf magnetics is a good service for heads relapping/new heads ..., overall It seems technically feasible to keep all old R2R and cassette decks in working condition.

Great video. I have a 488 that fast forwards and rewinds but the play is slow. I’m suspecting that gear is dragging or the belt is getting loose.
@nunyabeeswax7111
@nunyabeeswax7111 4 года назад
did you solve that problem? i also can only rewind and fast forward...
@sampalermo123
@sampalermo123 4 года назад
The lubrication I use professionally is Lubriplate 105. Ringing in ear can be avoided by listening to Gordon Lightfoot who makes real music not garbage. Yes, Tact switches that get used often have to be replaced. Mouser and Digikey can sell you some- get them now as they may soon become NLA. If you needs some I have ordered 200-300 of each type- You should put in the correct type switch. RTZ is return to Zero.

My play won’t drive but it will fast forward and rewind. Do these same gears run it all?
@sampalermo9472
@sampalermo9472 5 лет назад
Yes, The cam gear system is involved in all functions some less than others. In fast wind the brakes have got to be released and that happens by a cam gear movement.

@gameloozer731 6 лет назад
Understandable if you don’t want to share, but how much did run the customer? Looks like a fair amount of time and effort. I just ordered one of these. It’s supposed to be in full working order but seeing the innards of this beast makes me wary

Well done but cant believe you didn't change the main drive belt while you were there, they disintegrate after a few years. RTZ = Return to Zero counter.

Question - I have a 488 MK1 with 2 issues. The mono1/4 inch insert on Channel 2 needs to be replaced and the stereo 1/4 inch headphone insert also needs to be replaced. This is New Jersey. Do you repair these?

hey brother, did you get your fix? I got a 488 MKII with the very same issue, triple blink and weird noise. Did manage to get it fixed? I bought it on eBay for $450 and the seller wants to give me a partial refund of $250 I am not sure if I will be able to get it fixed or return it. I'm in New Jersey too.

@@canalptfobicosquepaiseesse9283 I picked it up today. Contact Russ (great guy) at www.njfactoryservice.com Analog/Digital Audio Repair - TEAC/Tascam He's in Mays Landing (Near the Atlantic City Airport.) The MKII's are especially desirable so I would get it fixed. Taking the refund and getting the unit tuned up is a reasonable proposition....especially for an older machine that you'd want the capstan belt other components tuned up so the unit will work well for you.
