Well, I managed to keep this one down to two videos. In part 2, I figure out what many people already know, which is that a certain plastic gear in the tape mechanism becomes brittle with age and needs to be replaced.
Then, just when I think I'm done, I discover a bad switch and show how I fixed it with salvaged parts.

You may also be able to find NOS Tascam gears on eBay for a similar price, but considering they are the same material and age as the ones that are crumbling, I personally felt better getting a modern replacement.
Not to mention, I'd rather support a small business that made an investment in maintaining these machines than support a guy who probably bought out Tascam's remaining stock of gears and jacked up the price 20x for his "trouble".
