When I was doing TV and VCR repair I quickly learned to clean the VCR heads and tape transport before doing anything because of all the people trying to fix it themselves.
Any tape or disc based format that you want to keep needs a digital backup. Spares for these are now almost impossible to obtain, other than drive belts. I have spent the last few days filling a skip with the ones customers never collected after been told they were beyond repair. It's costing me just to dispose of other peoples trash.
@@12voltvids The spring holds the tray stable from the left side so it opens and closes straight every time. With the spring removed the tray has a small jump in its travel. Holds it all stable for the micro switches on the right and keeps it truer.
I have never seen the actual heads on a DAT. The VCR versions I only see a loop of wire on a small PC board that doesn't actually contact the tape. In my mind I can see the drum being worn, or even the internal drum contacts from the heads to the pre amp are worn, or dirty. It always made me wonder how a VCR drum made those connections internally. Rather it be electrical or magnetic coupled. In my opinion most things are repairable if parts were available.
It's the same like playing vinyls. It's the haptics that the people miss. And the fact to have to listen to the tape and not being able to instantly seek to another track or part of the current track like you can do today.
No they don't. One usually wears out faster than the other. No you can't tell under s microscope unless you have a really powerful one capable of seeing a micron or 2.
This is a waste of time. I had a Sony ES series lasted me 2 years before it died on me. The warranty had expired and would have cost me way over 200 American dollars. I decided at that point to just throw out my Sony DAT recorder....never look back.
I still got this DA30 sitting in the box that I was going to donate to you over a year ago. Just got to figure out how to pack it and get it from Washington state, through customs, and to you. Serial number TCA 451374
