Improve your audio for video with the Tascam DR-10L lav mic recorder combo. I've added it to my Kit.com/rayortega and I think it's a great option for audio with any camera.
The DR-10L helps you get better audio by recording the audio separately and then syncing with the camera's audio in post production. Not the fastest workflow but if you're looking for a quality solution that is more affordable than most good wireless systems, this could be the unit for you.
I picked this up cause it was on sale. At full price there are probably better options but you can't beat the form factor and ease of this little recorder.
The small size allows you to put this recorder into your pocket or clip to your belt, then simply put the lav mic near your mouth and you'll get clean audio that sounds present and warm.
Not being tethered to the camera or relying on RF transmission like wireless, allows you to move anywhere without the need to worry about distance from the camera or interference from external frequency interference.
I think for those RU-vidr's just starting out, the DR-10L is a great option for pairing with any video camera without paying too much. With additional features like dual recording, a limiter, 24 bit recording, etc., you get a lot of power out of one small device.
Having to sync audio in the editing phase is not the most convenient but that is one compromise of a budget option for audio. However, most modern editing systems like Premiere Pro CC and FCPX have automatic syncing tools that make the process pretty simple.
For this video, I simply wanted to know if the audio was acceptable by my standards for quality and it is. There is a definite noise floor that I think is coming from the Tascam's own preamp but it's minimal you can hear in this video that it's not very noticeable which means this can easily be cleaned up in post production by using some light noise removal. But even if you didn't do that, the audio is perfectly useable.

Hi Ray, sounds decent. When I tested the 10L, I think the lavalier was a big contributor to the noise floor. But I really liked the recorder itself.

Hi Ray, excellent video, thank you. I have been using this mic for a while. I was filming on the street yesterday and the sound is very tinny. So I have been looking at settings. I just updated my firmware. Can you please tell me if you think my mic gain should remain on M. Btw I don't touch sound in post, that is out of my league. I appreciate your time.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 4 года назад
Thanks, Matthew. Just set your gain so that when you speak at your regular voice for videos, that your meters are hitting somewhere between -16 and -12. Not sure why it has gotten tinny, that's just a lack of low end, likely. Maybe see if your cam has the low end filter sometimes called a Wind filter engaged. Turn it off.

Ray, thanks for the video. I've had a DR-10L since they first came out and it has been great. I use it as a backup to wireless and as a replacement for an H2N which was just very bulky to use as a walk-around lav mic recorder. The little DR-10L has been excellent for my amateur video use.

same thing as me Rey I was looking at that and also the zoom F1 which seems to have a few more features just waiting for the price to come down but man is it such a great option for on the go recording

Yeah I love the size of this thing but it was the $50 off sale that got me to buy it;) I think it may be a little overpriced at $199 but $150 is a nice deal. Maybe they'll come down but definitely good to look out for these sales. B&H (linked) has good flash sales.

I agree, I got this for $150 which I think is the sweet spot but this is still cheaper than most wireless solutions. But if you don't mind something less compact, an H1 on sale with a nice lav like one from AspenMics is an equal setup.

personally I ended up getting this to back up my wireless option. I can't tell you how many times I've scanned clear channels and thought everything was good and later found interceptions during some of the most important moments. I purchased two of these, one black for a back up for groom and the white for the bride. These are great and I hardly ever have audio issues. It's worth the investment to minimize headaches.

what is the sweet spot mic gain of this mic? medium low? oh high?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 4 года назад
Gain is dependent on the distance to the microphone as well as how loud the person speaks. What you want to look for is where the level is when you are talking. This doesn't give you a good audio meter for this but using the small one it provides, look for the audio to be 70-75% of full when speaking at the level you will be speaking at in your video. I currently have mine set to M (medium) but could probably even try H (high) as I don't see a lot of difference, I show my current setup for gain at 2:15. You can also use the dual recording feature so that you can run it higher and then have a backup that is recorder lower. Hope that helps.

Hey Ray, I have a friend who wants to try voice acting but he's in an apartment with hard wood floors and not much space but lots of echo and he can't mess up the walls with holes. I suggested maybe using one of those Half Circle Adjustable Clothing racks and putting a comforter on it or maybe getting two to be fully enclosed to make a make shift booth. Would this be a good semi cheap idea? It would also be portable incised he moved.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 6 лет назад
Yep, sounds good. He basically can rig together any setup that surrounds him in material that will absorb the reverb. Budgets and restrictions require creativity;) Sounds like you're onto something with that half circle rack. Background noise will be just as important so hopefully there is a quiet time of day he can record and on top of that, be mindful of the internal noises (fridge, lights, fans, hard drives, etc.) Turn it all off if need be. Not sure if he has gear but a nice, affordable setup that wouldn't require a computer and would allow you to easily go anywhere would be an H5 podhelp.me/H5amazon and maybe since he's doing VO, a shotgun mic. I'm really enjoying this AT for VOs and it's super affordable podhelp.me/AT875RBH

Do you use voices.com? voice123? mandy.com? voicebunny? Are you finding a lot of work doing voice overs? Those acoustic panels found online can really be expensive if you buy a lot of them. I think I saw a pack of 6 Owens Corning 703 for like $67 and chances are you're going to need way more than six. Plus you going to buy fabric to cover them . So I was just trying to think outside of the box and be creative, yet get this and make it as cheap as possible. That's when I thought of clothing racks at the store. The ones that are big and round that you see and I thought maybe I could search for those and modify them and convert them into a tiny sound booth. It only needs to hold the microphone and maybe a light. Which he could put on the same tripod or monopod. I think one of those extension bars would work. It could hold the tablet for the script, the microphone, and a mini LED light. Put that in a corner of a room with the half round garment rack with either a comforter or maybe even make a wall out of foam attached to cardboard which is attach to the rack. Just something that will hold. Maybe buy some c-clamp or clamps you'd use for a green screen. It shouldn't cost too much. I saw the rack used for $70 and I can give him an old thick comforter to hang on it. He might have to buy two racks I guess cuz even in the corner of the room. The sound still might bounce off the non-treated wall. I'm sure home depot would have some foam to put on top (roof) of the make shift booth. I'm not sure how much sound mics usually pick up overhead without it being treated or covered. He just needs a indoor big soundproofed camping tent 😊. Are there cheaper or other possible yet similar solution to making this that you can think of that I may not have thought of? He can't put holes in the walls and do any damage cuz he wants to get his deposit back in case he moves.

Ray Ortega oh, sorry! I am an idiot. I didn’t realise it recorded into the device. I’m knew to all this and I’m looking at wireless set ups. I was looking at the sennheiser ew g4 and from what I can gather, it runs into the camera and records on to the storage device. I figured this was the same.

@@glennparker8247 Hey, no prob! Glad to see you're learning! Here's the older version of what you're looking at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Itp1TLajkPI.html this was how to set it up but you'll also hear it and this would record directly into the camera which means the audio will be recorded/embedded into your video meaning you don't have to sync the audio like you would with the DR10L above. There are advantages and disadvantages to each setup.

Hei, do you think that the auto level can be used when i am motovloging? i actually own a tascam dr 05 but it is a little bulky.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 4 года назад
Can't say since I've never motovlogged, the road noise might mess with the auto level but it will also be consistent so it could work fine. That said, if you set it to a safe manual level, you're going to be in the same proximity to the mic the whole time so it should work great that way and would be preferred.

So what’s the difference between that tascam and the zoom h1? Better pre-amp?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 6 лет назад
Haven't tired the Zoom yet. The F1 looks like it has a bigger screen, possibly a few more features and of course is also bigger. I suspect the preamps are relatively close to the same. I think if the DR-10L dropped to $150, it would beat the F1 but hard to say until I try it out.
@ZeekEOSZ
@ZeekEOSZ 6 лет назад
Yeah, I guess the zoom F1 is more flexible as it also has the option of a shotgun capsule which can be boomed wirelessly or on top of your camera for run & gun.

me too but it's still a good buy if you need this functionality. You could always get an older H1 and just plug in a cheaper lav mic., I like these amzn.to/2BYclzq this one is a kit to use with a phone if you wanted, same price as the mic by itself. Of course there are many different lavs.

Yeah it's biggest advantage is form factor, I really love the size and weight even compared to the new Zoom at the same price amzn.to/2vZAXX3. I got mine for $150 and I think that is really the sweet spot. I hope it gets there someday.

So you have to match your audio with the video feed. Is it hard?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 5 лет назад
If you have one long shot, it's not hard. And some editing software like Premiere and FCPX have automatic features. But as long as you are recording using the camera's mic and this mic, then you just clap your hands in the beginning three times and line up those spikes in the audio when you are in the editor.

Setting Battery Type is usually meant to get the estimated time remaining close to the real value. The voltage curves vary and what might be on the verge of failing on one battery type is closer to slightly on the low side of another type. !
