This is a review of the Tascam DR-10L Digital Audio Lav System. You can buy it at sdp.io/dr10L. I have a cold so my voice sounds a little weird. Don't blame the mic.

Recording two levels of audio is a brilliant idea. Can't tell you how many times I was dealing with limited audio dynamic range on my old mics. Nice!

The WAV and USB-2.0 are a bit of a deal killers for me. But the multi-level audio level recordings look like a life saver. Thanks for posting.

Curtis Judd just released a review of the new Zoom F1, which seems pretty similar to the Tascam in features and price. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3H2aF24oxao.html

Thanks for sharing that. It's really WAY bigger! It's definitely more versatile if you need a single recorder to do everything, but we have other field recorders for different purposes, and really do wear these things 16 hours a day when we're vlogging.

I suppose I'm a dummy, but see how it records to the micro SD card, but how do you use it with a camcorder? Don't find any information on that.

Why not first convert wav files on your computer before sending them out via WiFi. You can even do that with just vlc.
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 6 лет назад
Yeah I mean I know how to transcode stuff. I like fewer steps... and the particular example I was talking about I didn't have any time at all; I had to leave to go do something else while the transfer was still taking place. Plus you still have to wait for the WAV files to transfer over the slow USB 2.0.

Tony is a big boy with big boy pockets, so he doesn't care about mic size, I respect that. But wav file size? Man, throw it into audacity and compress it down to whatever mp3 species you want -- takes minutes, can save hours of file transfer from hotel wi-fi. It's an extra step, but video editing is a lot of steps no matter what, and if it saves time that can make the addition of discrete components to your workflow worth it. Especially when it also lets you save money!

You completely miss the point. I just want to record in MP3 so I don't have to worry about file size when recording to an SD Card. No reason that just a simple voice over has to be in .wav
@HassanDibani
@HassanDibani 6 лет назад
Hardened Studios it's in wav to save on processing power. That's how it gets away with a single AAA for a whole day of recording. Smaller battery, smaller size....

Zoom F-1 markets 10-hours on mp3. This feature should be optional with a disclaimer of lowered battery performance

It's not just about battery life, if it needs to transcode WAV to MP3 efficiently it might need different internal hardware.

Nice! Sounds good. I noticed it records 24 bit audio. Have you considered recording at -20dB to avoid clipping and then bring up the volume in post? I do this a lot so I don’t have to worry about clipping. You figure with 24 bits with each bit representing roughly 6dB of dynamic range you would be at a total of 144dB of dynamic range. If you record at a much lower volume where your peaks are hitting -20dB you still have enough resolution to capture good audio and you would be far enough away from the noise floor of the recorder to have a strong signal to noise ratio. Just something you might try out and see if it works for you. I use Universal Audio plugins like the sonnox limiter in post to bring the volume back up. They also have some nice pre amp plugins you could use before the limiter plugin. I’m interested in a lav mic myself so I’ll consider this one. Thanks for the video!

Been using Zoom H1 with Rode Smart Lav+ for 2 years, never had a problem with the mic popping out. Plus ive needed ambience and/or sound effects, and just unplgged the lav and used the x/y mic builtin on the zoom.

Nice review Tony. The biggest drawback is obviously the fact that you can not monitor the sound. I’ve been using these units for about two years and shot hundreds of hours with them. In all that time I have not had one second of missed dialogue. They work great and are very flexible in how you can utilize them.

Frank I just found out about these. In your opinion, if the camera is capable, is it better to have the wireless mic system go direct to the camera for easier editing? Or is it simple to overlay this audio onto the video track? I've only used lav mics that are recording directly into my video footage.

Hey, this is great for young Kid’s producing videos! Small and light weight! I think we will get a couple. I noticed your audio (with the Tascam DR 10L) had better sound (clean & clear) than the Zoom F 1 that Curtis Judd reviewed. Curtis sounded like he was in a studio when he used the “lav” portion of the mic. However, it is all personal choice! Both mics will do a great job!

i have that same recorder.. love it.. max sdcard size is 32gb.. anything larger and the unit freaks out.. also the first one i bought was defective.. the lav wouldnt screw into the body and it was shutting off randomly.. sent it back, tascam told me the motherboard was cooked.. sent a replacement.. havent experiened any issues with this one.. also, I use an external power bank when I originally testing it that may have been the cause of the motherboard crapping out.. either way.. its a great unit and ran for 3+hours straight on my last camping trip and the battery still had one bar.. it comes with a nice little carrying case that you can use to store extra batteries in. I'm still not entirely sure about the screw in connector so I took some gafe tape and made a stress relief.. being an audiophile, I only record in wav format. So this device is perfect for me. That in combination with my rode videomic Pro Plus I'm completely set

@BruceRichardsonMusic
@BruceRichardsonMusic 6 лет назад
Obviously I'm not Tony :) But, generally speaking, on a small production where you're running an on-cam shotgun, it's easy to line up the waveforms in post with no need to slate. At full zoom, you're at 1/48,000th of a second resolution, so any transient will suffice for perfect sync. The only thing you must check is clock drift (since the digital clocks are not sync'ed). This usually won't manifest to any significant degree in short takes. But, say you're doing a continuous hour-long interview, etc. When you conform the audio in the pre-editing stage, it's a good idea to sync-check visually (at full zoom) to determine the total drift. If it's within a handful of samples, chances are you won't notice it at all. If it's significant, you just make a few cuts in the wild track, and sync it up. Pretty trivial, once you've done it a few times. Now if you're doing an actual scripted narrative, you're shooting scenes anyway. Those, you'd slate and log like any production...and most of the time a take won't go on nearly long enough for clock drift to become an issue.

Yeah it can work. you can even just use the headphones that came with your smartphone and get decent sound. I don't like it, though, because I like to be able to just wear the lav all day (and still use my phone) and the headphone jack doesn't screw in, so it can come loose in your pocket and wreck your sound. But for casual, quick videos, one of those Rode smarthpone mics works fine.

Also curious. I assume you made this video and synced the audio to it later (especially since you had the RODE mike example inserted)? If so, how is the best way to sync and does it never get out of sync over time with the video?
@chrisfeatherstone9691
@chrisfeatherstone9691 6 лет назад
Yeah, you would record to the SD card in the Tascam recorder and then sync that audio to the audio recorded in camera in post. Once you align the waveforms you will turn the camera recorded audio all the way down and use the higher quality audio from the recorder. Just a quick tip. I recommend snapping your fingers or clapping at the beginning of recording so that you have transients that are sharp and fast. Align those peaks together and then you can cut that section of the video out after everything is aligned. Hope that helps!
@chrisfeatherstone9691
@chrisfeatherstone9691 6 лет назад
John Dikmen be sure to zoom in on the audio waveforms to align peaks as close as possible. Also check the video not only at the beginning but also at the end once you think it’s aligned. Adjust as needed. Typically you will align the peaks in the audio so it helps if you snap your fingers several times or clap your hands at the beginning. The peaks created from this will be sharp transient waveforms and make aligning much easier.

It's the cheapest I've found that I'd recommend. Wired lavs SUCK. At some point someone is going to trip or drag down the entire rig when they walk away. They make mics for your smartphone but they don't screw it so the mic can unplug and you don't notice.

Yes Tony... the F1 is bigger. But it also has benefits like a better screen, more recording options, and the ability to add accessory shotgun or X/Y mics. The F1 can basically be a mini handheld recorder like the H4n... while also being a small lavalier recorder. Will you be reviewing it? It seems like a one-of-a-kind jack-of-all-trades device! I need one for a shoot in mid-April... but no one has the F1 in stock.

We probably won't review the F1 just for the sake of reviewing it... We have a couple of different field recorders for different situations, and even a shotgun mic that records to flash. So I don't really need the extra versatility but the smaller size really does make it easier for us to just wear them all day so we're ready to record.

The one downside of the F1 is it has no safety track.

Shots From The Bench... and the tascam does?

MP3 has the job done but it has poor compression efficiency compared to ogg/vorbis or acc/m4a, and I think those should be prioritized instead. MP3 just wouldn't cut it for me in a professional video production workflow.

You're not very bright. Why in the world would you be using a shotgun mic from 20 feet away in the most echoing room you could possibly find?

"Your" not very nice. I'm demonstrating to the large portion of my audience who doesn't understand scenarios where a lav mic is beneficial. Everyone's in a different stage of learning, James.

Look at Goldwave. Shareware Audio editor, analyzer, and converter that you can open the file and then just save it as an MP3. Been using it as a professional musician for well over a decade. Has tons of other features for final mixdown capability, but it will take your files and make them MUCH smaller. Goldwave.com. ..Joe

Or Audacuty. Because Open Source.

Yeah, but Audacity's primary purpose is as a recorder. Goldwave is a final mixdown product, so conversion is as easy as loading the file, then Save As, making it an MP3. ..Joe

lol, obv, you don't seem bother to don't be able to check the balance of your sound to be sure if your voice is saturated or not, lol .... hmmmmkkk #sponsopizedvideo

This isn't sponsored. We bought both mics and we clearly disclose all sponsorships. Please be more polite in the future; accusing us of fraud is rude.

I'm sorry if my comment sounded to be rude to you, it was really not my intend. Really, I like your videos and the energy you put on it, so please allow me to re-start this conversation : what this product offers more than just a good lav mic plugged to a smartphone ? Is the fact that you can't monitor the balance your sound isn't a really big issue ? If it's not, why ?
