tearing down the lower section of a Tascam 488 Mk II 8 track portastudio. You would need to disassemble your mark two if you needed to solder faulty components on the underside of PCBs, repair the tracks n the transformer. I also briefly point out the trim-pots necessary for calibrating the record and playback amplifiers (something I demonstrate on a 424 Mk III and a 244, see my channel)

3:00 This is a entire board for the DBX? I don't even use the DBX on my 488 mkii :D

I have a MKII 488, and have been trying to figure out what's going on with it. When I play back channel one I get a random popping sound... It seems like it goes away if I play the tape for an hour straight or so. It "mostly" happens when I first play a song back the first 15-20 times, but sometimes it will keep making the popping sound for longer periods. I have moved all the switches and they are all clean and work well.. I actually had it all cleaned and replaced any belts and gear, about 2 months ago. I don't think it's anything the repair shop did, could it be a discharge or maybe something isn't grounded properly on channel one?

Try replacing the coupling capacitors in the playback path of the problem channel. If you're not sure what I mean I've made several videos recently with "colour coding schematics" in the title which should help explain.

@@Tetrakan Ok, thank you for the information. I will probably end up sending it to a repair shop, because I don't think I would be able to do it myself if it involves soldering. I will definitely check out the video you suggested on your channel. I will keep you posted on my results. Thank you for your suggestions.

Hey man, love your channel. I have a 488mkii and channel 7 doesn’t play back. I know nothing about electronics, so I’m reluctant to open it up. Could it be something simple like a loose connection?

Hi, a loose connection could explain the issue you’re having, but there are other possible causes too. You’d have to open it up to figure that out though. For instance if you didn’t see something unplugged or a broken wire, you could try plugging the connector for a working channel into the ch7 header, and see/hear if you get audio out of channel 7 - the outcome of the test establishes whether the playback amp for that channel is faulty or the problem lies with that segment of the record/playback head.

Hi there, on my Tascam 488, when I record to 3 or 7, it deletes the other track at the same time as recording to the one I want (ie. if I record to 3, 3 is recorded but 7 is wiped). It’s only this group 3 of tracks, any ideas what it might be? Could it be like misalignment of the tape tracks? Cheers (your videos proper help by the way)

Not having had exactly the same problem myself I'm not totally sure... have the wires from the erase head been plugged into the wrong channel - so erase channel 3 plugged into the PCB socket intended for channel 7 and vice versa?

@@Tetrakan I’m not sure man I’ll have to take it apart. I swear it was fine beforehand, I’ve had it a few months and pretty sure it didn’t do it before, but thanks nevertheless I’ll see what I can do
