Tascam 488 MkII or 464 - gear C replaced, but transport LEDs still flashing? Problem solved!

Having previously replaced the notriously fragile gear C, I left my 488 MK II sitting fro 18 months.
When I came back to use it was showing the same symptoms as when gear C broke - the magnetic head assembly wasn't raising and the LEDs above the record play and pause buttons were flashing.
It turned out the grease in the mechanism had become hard, preventing the gears which raise and lower the head assembly from turning.
Cleaning the old grease off using isporopyl and replacing it with fresh silicone grease fixed the issue.

I have the same issue, I initially thought it was the belt, replaced that and still getting very slow playback, looked at the C gear and it looked ok, so I guess it’s the grease, my C gear is also very yellow so I am replacing it at same when I go in and relube everything.

Nice solve! I've got this flashing transport issue with my 488 and will be tearing it apart soon, thanks for your walk through videos. Where do you order new C gears from? I found some from a guy across in America, I'm assuming there's nothing in Scotland or the UK?

Thanks. I’ve ordered from Germany and Netherlands in the past, the listings change all the time or I’d share a link. Yeah I’m in Scotland, no sign of a supplier within UK that I’ve seen.

You can 3d print it for free if you or a friend of yours got a 3d printer :) i did it all by myself and it worked perfectly

I don't think the 488 MkI has a gear C...the MkII does - is this correct Tetrakan?
@Tetrakan

@@richardsmith4992 it is correct, I thought maybe he had abbreviated out the "MkII"?

Hey Tetrakan, finally got round to doing this - it was solidified grease and the C gear broke when I took it out! It took a few attempts of removal, cleaning, regreasing and reassembly before it would work, and now the tape head movement up and down is really jerky (but working again). I'm wondering, I cleaned the grease off the round electrical connectors on the largest gear in the assembly, could that be causing the issue? I take it that's not silicone grease if it needs to conduct?

Any chance a motor could be shot causing the three flashing lights? Or most likely gears causing it? Mine has been parked for years when I gave up a search for a motor replacement but now you have my curiosity peaked once again. I had previously replaced a gear and the capstan belt. Thanks for the vid.

I haven't come across it and I would've thought hardened grease was a more likely explanation, but it seems possible to me...have you tried hooking up the motor to a 9v battery to see if it spins? See this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HFm06qh1nmw.html

@@Tetrakan I appreciate the tip. I hit a lot of dead ends a few years back with limited talk on the forums and not a whole lot on here. Glad to see you're keeping it alive. 👍👍

hey tetrakan, i’m having a similar issue to this but on a 424 mk1. all the green leds on the meters blink and the capstan spins intermittently when i try to play it. the solenoid had fallen out in transit, but i fixed that. i’m just wondering what i need to fix? everything looks like it’s in working order. nothing glaringly wrong. the gears feel fine. help me out? thanks.

Hello, I have a question about my 424 mkiii. The pitch control doesn’t work when normal speed is selected, but it does work on high speed. Any idea how I could get it to work on normal speed too? Thanks.

Sounds like there’s a bad resistor or wire on your pitch board, open her up, look for a loose wire, check neither of the resistors is burned out, do me on Facebook if you’re stuck

Hey - Sorry for just hijacking the latest video. I'm realising the GEC (Porta One) transport I'm using needs extra eclips and bearings - can I get away with 1.2mm clips and 1mm bearings? I can't find smaller e clips (0.8 sees out of stick everywhere), and are 1mm bearings okay? very grateful for any advice :)

I haven’t tried with smaller sizes because I’m in the fortunate position of carrying a lot of spares. I mean try, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it caused problems….
@alancchapman
@alancchapman 2 года назад
@@Tetrakan do you know the correct sizes, or is it just 'those ones in the transport' from, your experience (I could understand not knowing - as you say you have naturally come into spares)
@alancchapman

Might be a case of just buying another spares and repairs of the cheapest machine carrying that transport

Yeah I don't know for sure - at one time you could get ill porta ones for buttons on eBay and i bought a few hence my parts supply. Does the parts list accompanying the exploded view in the service manual give these specifics? It's free download on my blog. Otherwise faulty fostex x15s were changing hands for under fifty quid recently, good luck.
