Chess players should be the ones interviewing each other. They actually know what to ask. Just look at Carlsen here-how often to you see him enjoy talking about a game like this? They’re having a blast. I want more of these videos where the two players talk to each other about the game, for sure!

RaifNW i think it’s just the nature of the character type of chess players. They tend to be more introspective and careful of what they say. More so when nowadays any analysis they give can potentially be proven wrong by a computer.

It's amazing that they're able to play any moves during the game after tanking on all those possible lines.

Any analysis? Hardly. A computer does not know an opponent's mindset. Part of Chess is reading how impulsive your opponent is playing and what their likely moves are.

There's a valuable life-lesson on display here. The more competent you are at a complex, difficult activity or subject, the less certain you are of your performance. Only simpleton idiots are 'sure' they are right. So, beware when someone goes on and on about how they are an 'expert.'

Anyone who watches GM Peter Svidler's Banter Blitz shows knows that he's the real deal... this is vintage Pete! Carlsen is just enjoying Peter's passion and is grooving along.

Just a suggestion: Add a chess board in the top right corner showing Magnus and Svidler's perspective of the board. Would be very helpful for players like us to understand what they meant while moving the pieces. Thanks for hosting this tournament!

It is great to find Magnus in a personable mood like this. I don't think he would do such a thing with every grandmaster. Svidler has a good record against him, and so Carlsen probably shows him a bit more respect than other grandmasters. I wonder if there is a similar video featuring Carlsen and Nakamura.

@mistletoe88
@mistletoe88 6 лет назад
tornado100able moving the pieces is actually more of an exercise to keep their hands active. They already have most of the positions played out in their minds which is why they often talk about things that are not even on the board. What could supplement this is if someone actually laid out the positions they’re analysing on a GUI so that we normal folk can follow them better.

When Svidler suddenly goes through all the lines in his head picking up a lot of pieces (somewhere bewteen 3rd and 4th minute) and Magnus is like yeah I see what you mean, you realize these guys are freaking monsters. I mean, I think mayyybe I could do stuff like that if it were my game, but nowhere near that quickly and that confidently.

I love the subtle insecurity that every other player in the world feels when seated opposite Magnus. The same is true of the subtle dominance that Magnus imposes whenever seated at the board. I love paying attention in these analyses how reluctant Magnus' opponents are to suggest potential lines. Even though they're thd top 10 or 20 in the world they seem like they're afraid that Magnus will point out an obvious flaw and make them look silly. They always seem to be willing to hop on board with his suggestions, too. I think only Aronian and Caruana really pick Magnus's brain in these post-game analysez. Most anyone else seems like a puppy in the rain.

Interesting that Carlsen would consider Peter as part of his team for the preparation of this year's world championship. In all sincerity, Peter is a tremendous player, very solid, perhaps, not so much in the finals, but there, Magnus does not need help in the least. Also, if Carlsen has incorporated the madman of the IAN NEPO, how can he not consider this player that I consider to be far above in terms of technical level? Someday I'll ask the champion.

Peter talks too much. (Although he's pretty good at it, as we all know) But when you have the world champ analysing a game with you, you leave him at least some room to express himself. Not ones during these 13 ' (maybe at 11:00) did Peter allow Magnus to get into a deeper line without interrupting. What a waist for Peter.
