From what i learn, stroke is essentially how hard a machine hits because of the distance it travels, both small stroke like a 3.2 or 4.2 can carry the same amount of ink in the cartridge, but with a shorter stroke the needle hang does have to be lessen for it to grab ink, and longer stroke can grab ink with a longer needle hang, and with a 3.2 or 3.5 stroke machine doesn't mean you build layers slowly because how much ink is in the cartidge, you are able to build layers slower because of how that needle bogs in the skin. So when you have a machine with a 4.2 stroke, you are able to saturate or do solid thick lines quicker because of how hard it hits and how easily the needle bogs in the skin. But we also have to remember about our volts because that also plays a role. This is what ive learn from my own research, so I might be wrong, just wanted to share. 😁 please correct me if I'm wrong, i have been wrong before many times.

Adam the machine speed comes from the motor man not the stroke. It is simply physique. The rotation is the same the acceleration is only different because of the weight on the cam and the length of the travel. They rotate around the shaft in the same way. It is the same time for 2.5 and 4.5 mm stroke if you use the on the same machine.

So what stroke should you use for colour packing, I have an adjustable stroke machine from 2.6-4.0

I have the Bishop Wand Packer. Used to do old school with a 3.5 stroke machine before and had no issues healing. But since I use the Wand I feel like every tattoo is scabbing up really bad even though my volts go as low as 4,8v. The lineweight was also thicker on the 3.5 stroke machine I feel. My hand speed is pretty low but not that low. But I'm kind of afraid to up my voltage since when starting I used 6 to 6.5v and my work scabbed up really bad. But same thing with 5v, so I feel like this machine is just not made for my hand speed. But then again I have seen people on RU-vid working with the Packer on 8.5v, not moving significantly faster than me. Depth is not the problem. Not sure what to do.

Is 4.5 so much different from 4.2? Im willing to get the cheyenne sol nova but the stroke lengths are either 3.5 or 4.5. I only do lines but sometimes as small as a 9 liner so Im afraid the 4.5 stroke will be like a chainsaw for that. I also do big lines like 16 RS thats why Im leaning more to 4.5 than 3.5. Any thoughts are welcome!

i have a spektra xion and since i started using the 3.7 for lines, if i turn the voltage to 7.5-8.0 it hurts like hell, me and the clients, but if i tattoo with like a 7.2 its perfect. Could you please advise your thoughts for this? is it because i have an average hand speed?

Say if doing colour realistic with a 4.0 would you move hand faster than a 3.5 ? As surely it would damage the skin faster.

Haaa I just told my buddy today, looking at tattoo pics... dude had red and swelling i said to him that is not correct!!! I never seen trauma to the skin by a good artist...
