TATTOOS--Does the Bible Say That Body Modifications are Sinful or Okay?

What does the Bible have to say about marking one's body with tattoos or other modifications?
The question REALLY is--"Does God's Word guide us about having tattoos"?
Let's go to Deuteronomy 29:29, and as you turn there I want to explain to you what we're talking about. We're not talking about, if you have one tonight, this is not a--go down and get your tattoo lasered off night.
It's not about us undoing things we've done. What it's about is from this moment forward before making any further decisions on modifying our body--make sure that we have all the facts and whether or not that or anything we do pleases the Lord.
That's really what it comes down to the Apostle Paul distilled down in the New Testament.

I have many tattoos - got them before I was saved by the blood of Yhwh. I am an ex witch who was deceived for many years. Another important question is, “Am I trying to draw attention to myself, and also to fit in with the current culture or trends. Some current trends are tattoos, cursing, and rap music. They all really go together very well, but are inappropriate for Christians.

I'm saved, and always grew up with a conviction against tattoos. But as I stopped heeding the word of God I felt really tempted to get a tattoo, but I would always stopped myself because I knew the reason for them were not good and one I would regret later on. So I never got them, but you are right that many churches today are approving of them in their congregation and promote it also, I attended a few and almost fell for it but I always had that conviction that I would give an account for that and that my intentions were not good at all for them. Unfortunately for other sins I did fall into them but thank God he forgives and redeems

I will save this class & lisen to it several times! This is absolutely spot on, so clear, & so, so important. For years now, I've seen so, so many females utterly caked in makeup & fake everything. It's now at an all time high.These females rationalize the attire, heavy "make-up," gaudy jewelry, & they essentially show off; parading the world on their bodies. They adamantly (& often angrily) refuse to be guided to the truth of Scripture you've taught here.

I was in the US Navy/USMC in the 1980's, had plenty of opportunities to get marked up. Then a licensed nurse for 34 years, so basically I am not afraid of needles. I always felt it is not acceptable to mark up your body. I absolutely hate the last 2 generations of people marking themselves up looking like out of work circus carnies. I forbid my kids to get tattoos but all but one has done it. Our body is a gift and belongs to God. We are only using them to learn how to return to God. You know a sin by its addictive quality and when the world is doing it. All who sin are slaves, which is addiction. If you had a tattoo before you had maturity in the spirit, don't sweat it. It's not a big deal. The motive behind it is the deal. Ask yourself why you got a tattoo, or why you might want one. Even if you are getting 'Christian' tattoos, it's still off. Maturity says don't.

People get wrapped up in their own time frame. In ancient times, slave owners tattooed their human property. During the holocaust, jews were tattooed. Always a sign of ownership. People today are under the illusion it is different on modern times. Peace, love, joy & hope are very rarely the theme. Your intention & public reaction doesn't harmonize: especially if someone takes offense or feels threatened.

Many young people seem to be into the body ink. I asked several why they do it. They like it was the answer I got. So it seems to me to be a self centered, prideful, rebellious act to fit in with the others of their generation. I was recently hospitalized and the majority of folks who took care of me were inked up. They cared for me well, but I began to feel surrounded by demons. Pleasing God is more important than pleasing others or self. Just my honest opinion.

Thank you John for this teaching. This question came up recently and I tried to respond but realized I was not prepared adequately to direct the person to God's word specifically. To me that means all I did was give my opinion which is meaningless if I can't direct them to scripture so they can have a firm foundation based on God's Word and not just my 'opinion'. I am grateful to God for you and your wife, for you faithfulness to teach God’s word. Hello CDM my sister in Christ. This is my first comment on RU-vid but felt compelled to do so. God revealed himself to you and accepted you tattooed and all. You're a new creature in Christ, all things have become new. If the mighty creator of all accepted you the way you are everyone professing Jesus should also, not giving their opinion on what you should do but God's. You sister have a powerful testimony and God has a job for us all. What person can say remove your tattoos when God may want to use them to reach someone who was deceived like you. You are blessed with the knowledge and experience to share the Word with those from your past.The Bible says work out your salvation with fear and trembling. I say let much prayer, scripture, and the conviction of the Holy Spirit be your guide.

It's Just A Fad Can't You See? No tattoos or body piercing for me, It's just a fad can't you see? This fad for some is just to fit in, They will do anything to their skin. Many will endure the pain, Just to go against the grain. Others think they look tough, With all that body stuff. Some do it thinking it's cool, But they will end up a fool. Their future do they really see? This is what really bothers me. Then again, maybe they do, And that is their point of view. Your body is the only one you get, So you need to take care of it. Tattoos and piercing will leave your body scarred, And you will be forever marred. A decision that people make, That will end up a big mistake. Since fads will come and fads will go. Is just one reason, not to go with the flow. Your body will never be the same And only yourself, will be to blame. These are my thoughts, many may not agree. I would be interested in hearing Dr. John Barnett’s commentary on the verse before the one referencing tattoos in Leviticus (Lev 19:27) that speaks to not cutting hair on the sides of your head or trimming your beard. My understanding is that there were specific types of haircuts and beard trimmings that related to pagan deity rituals that this verse is addressing rather than the general act of cutting off your hair.
@just_me2797
@just_me2797 11 месяцев назад
Exactly. Nor were they to wear mixed linens. These verses were spoken to a specific people who were involved in pagan rituals trying to communicate with the dead. They were chastised and given a set of rules as punishment for their actions because they were so involved in what they were doing that their rituals had become more important to them than thei relationship with God. Far too many people bounce around the Bible picking and choosing scriptures out of context in order to support their own narrative. The same can be done with virtually any book.

When one argues in this manner, one argues in the heart and rebels against man (1Cor 3:1-23). js Let us instead look inward in the deepest part of Truth (Psalm 51) and do what is Righteous to and for our Creator. If our body IS His Temple (1Cor 3:17) because He created us then... "Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart. For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: and that he died for all, ---->>> that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again."

I remember asking a popular ministry, "How can you reconcile God's call for us to be holy with tattoos." They were defending tattoos. Their written response to me was a Straw Man attack. NOTHING Biblical for their defense. Without knowing who I am or seeing me, they called me fat and made fun of what they thought I looked like. They criticized me for wearing makeup and tried to equate makeup and tattoos. They knew that I am a woman, and tried to equate having babies with getting tattoos. They tried to rip me to shreds and shame me because I even asked that question. I could hardly believe it! (I'm a mother of 5, a lap swimmer and I wear no makeup or color my hair - not that any of this really matters for the argument. But they didn't know me, and that was evident in their response.) Thankfully, since my husband at one time taught logic at the college level, I knew enough to know if that was their defense, they didn't have the Biblical evidence to support their position. Even if one looks at the Deeds of the Flesh vs the Fruits of the Spirit, where do tattoos fall? They certainly are not under the Fruits of the Spirit. 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the desire of the flesh is against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, in order to keep you from doing whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, 20 idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who [h]belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5) Thanks for a well done presentation!

This is a struggle. I am praying on this. I have been saved and also a tattoo artist for a long time now. I guess the first question I have is regarding verse 27 regarding length of hair and beard? What aspects in the Old Testament and more specifically what was written to the Israelites, transcend into our culture today and what one’s don’t. I shave my head and I grow and cut my beard. And so do so many. So what do we say regarding this. I would agree that the things people of the world and in this world can get as a tattoo fall in to categories of paganism and forms of idolatry. And even as a tattoo artist that pretty much only tattoos pretty things like flowers and watercolor related images… I have to admit when you strip down the very thing of why people get tattoos… there can or has to be some level of vanity in it. I’ll be speaking with my pastors more on this and praying on this.

I see tattoos as an act of rebellion. Long before God saved me I read Leviticus 19:28 and it always stuck in my mind. I never will tattoo God's temple. I will never criticize you for doing it, it is your choice. When I see Christian Pastors covered in tattoos I ask myself why, why do they do that. It's worldly for sure.

I used to think that this subject didn't apply to gentiles being in a dispensation of grace and of course I did read and realize that it was prohibited for the Jewish nation to have such fleshly ornamentation or as a subject is tattoos. But as time went by and I begin to read apostle Paul's writings understanding that our bodies do not belong to us or not our own and that our bodies are as important to God as our soul and our spirit therefore giving me the understanding that we should not tattoo our bodies and that should deface another's property. So therefore he didn't know what to do good with it not him just sin. And he that it cannot do something without faith to him it is sin. I'm thankful that the scriptures are revealed to me over a period of time how important we are individually and the lives that we live for God.

@beachgirl5316
@beachgirl5316 Год назад
@@clarkridlen1966 Matthew 7:1 says, “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.” Jesus here is not forbidding judgment of any kind. His point is to show that some people judge from a self-righteous, condemning, and hypocritical stance. They point out slivers in the eyes of others not because they care but because they get some cheap thrill from faultfinding as if it makes them feel better about themselves. Some are so self-righteous that they are even blind to their own hypocrisy, being unable to see the log in their own eyes. Jesus is condemning self-righteousness, hypocrisy, and an inability to judge ourselves rightly, which we must do (1 Corinthians 11:29). In no way does Matthew 7:1 forbid discernment. In fact, later in Matthew 7 Christ explains that we can discern true believers from false teachers based upon their fruit. Christ’s intention is not to forbid judgment that evaluates between right and wrong, moral and immoral. What Jesus is saying is not to usurp the place of God, Who alone can cast into hell (Luke 12:5). God sees all, and He will judge sin righteously. Our job is to let God be God and to love and share the gospel with those whom we have discerned through righteous judgment to not be acting righteously. This is the point of John 7:24 which says, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Righteous judgment sees sin for what it is, and it is not afraid to point it out. But this judgment becomes unrighteous when it stems from “holier-than-thou” motives or when it seeks to condemn rather than to restore. Galatians 6:1 says, “Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.” Righteous judgment recognizes that some people are spiritual and some are not, being carnal and mired in sin. If someone who is spiritual finds a brother or sister in sin, they are to restore them in a spirit of gentleness. Clearly this requires discernment and an understanding of right and wrong. Yet it need not cross into unrighteous condemning judgment. A spirit of gentleness and being intentional about seeking restoration are essential to righteous judgment. When we see a fellow Christian sin, we need to confront the sin (after we have dealt with our own hearts) but humbly, graciously, and with an understanding that we are not above the potential to do the very same thing. Unrighteous, self-righteous judgment is ugly and repulsive to a world desperately in need of Christ. If Christ judged as these folks judge, He would have never come to earth and died for us. But He loved us even while we were yet sinners and died for us (Romans 5:8). The mentality and focus of the Christian ought to be to save sinners and restore believers, not to judge and condemn, though we definitely need to exercise discernment. When Christianity deteriorates into keeping records of wrongs and looking over one another’s shoulders in suspicion and even with a hope of catching another in sin, we have fallen far from Christ’s call. In a day and age where judgment has been itself condemned, we need to judge righteously. There is a shortage of discernment in a time that demands an abundance. For the sake of the lost, for our brothers and sisters struggling with sin, for our own spiritual well-being, and for the glory of Christ, let us judge righteously and love unconditionally.

I have always wondered “why” people tattoo themselves? It’s an important question. As Dr Barnett quoted in Romans, our bodies are the temple of God, so why would we modify it. Are we questioning God’s creation? Are we bringing attention to ourselves, instead of God. There are those who are tattooed but now saved. Unfortunately, I see many who claim to be saved, but make every effort to show off their tattoos by wearing clothing that is extremely revealing. If we are “truly saved” it will show in our actions and choices. I also understand some of these people believe they are saved, but if God’s word is important in their life, they should come to an understanding that certain things are not godly. Paul has made this clear that all things are permissible but not all things are expedient. Corinthians 6:12 John also brought up something else that should always be considered: does our behavior hinder others or does it help? I’m not saying everyone with tattoos should question their salvation, only those who continue to magnify it. What is more important God or the world? It’s our decision, which will affect us for eternity. Whether in judgment or rewards.

If our bodies are temples for the Lord we should be physically healthy, don’t need to be fit but healthy. If we are not of this world, we should not wear Nike, Tommy H. Etc because that is marked by the world. We should be making our own clothing. And if we shouldn’t get tattoos because Lev 18:29 tells us not to tattoo our bodies…. We should also not wear clothing of mixed fabrics, trim the edges of our beards or the hair on side of our hair, harvest the corners of our garden(crops).
