Besides kaya pao, red bean pao is another kids' favorite. Homemade red bean paste is used to make this pao. The secret to have a soft and smooth red bean paste is to soak the red bean before cooking and don't cook the paste until too dry.

Glutinous rice flour is to give the paste some stickiness especially when used as mooncake paste. For filling for pao it should be fine if not added, you may try omitting it, don’t cook the paste until too dry so that it is smooth.

May I know what is wheat starch in chinese. I really like Tau Sa Pao. Thanks for sharing this recipe. Just the right amount for a family of three.

Wheat starch is 澄面粉 (kanji gandum)。

Cake flour is not suitable for making pao. You may use plain flour (tepung gandum) but need to adjust the water added, and the colour of the pao will be more yellowish.

You may use plain flour (all-purpose flour), just adjust the amount of water added, but the pao skin will be yellowish in colour with plain flour.

Do you mean proofing for 1 time? You can, but the pleating pattern will not be clear when steamed.

Yes, just adjust the amount of liquid added, but the pao will be yellowish in colour if using tepung gandum.
