Let me take a stab at summing up the situation with taurine. Taurine is amazing, and without question one of the most promising things being researched right now in the longevity space. All indications also point to it being safe. It seems increasingly clear that you'll want this in your life each and every day. If you can get enough from your diet, perfect. Most people don't, so for the vast majority of folks you're going to want to supplement. It's cheap to do so. Start as soon as you can, and if you're over 30, start right now. There you go. Go be healthy.

Thank you for the the very quick and detailed overview. The only think I would like to add is that while the effect on the lifespan may not exactly translate to humans, there exist no other supplement that has such a large effect on mice, so it could be good starting point. Regarding dosage, taurine levels drop significantly with age, and those statistics include part of the population that consumes taurine-rich foods. So it is reasonable to assume that dosage should depend on age.

Siim, In terms of pharmacological effects of Taurine, the results can not be achieved with food sources as the there are competing amino acids and extraction of the taurine through food does not achieve clinically significant levels. This is how GLY/NAC works as well. Comprised functions in aging exasperate this. Isolating the amino acids have pharmalogical effects, food sources do not.

Taurine was life changing when I started taking it. My sleep was comparable to when I was a child. Every morning I felt deep rejuvenation. And I only took 2-3 grams before sleep. That lasted for about a year. It started to make me wake up to pee 2-3x/night and I often woke up feeling hot. Something must have changed in my chemistry. Nowadays I seldom take it. My sleep stack is different but has similar effects.

@larsnystrom6698
@larsnystrom6698 15 дней назад
Taurine is interesting. But we don't know much about how it works in the body. This is an idea, from a research article in Nature: "The hypothesis of taurine as mitochondrial matrix buffer The mitochondrial matrix as biochemical reaction chamber Stabilising the pH gradient by the presence of a buffer compound like taurine in the mitochondrial matrix transforms the matrix into a biochemical reaction chamber with a slightly alkaline pH 8.0-8.5. It is well established that several important biochemical processes occur inside the mitochondrial matrix, e.g., all the reactions in the citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation and some of the reactions in the urea cycle." We also know that cats can't produce taurine and have to get it from their food. If they don't get it, they get blind and have heart failure. We humans creates enough of it not to show any disease, but probably not enough for optimal health. If taurine works by creating a good osmotic environment in multicellular animals, it explains why it's so hard to understand it's effect. It's pretty indirect! It's an amino acid, but not a building block of our proteins like other amino acids. That it's produced in animals shows it's needed. But what's it's optimal level?

You lost fat just taking taurine? Did you change diet? Did you put on muscle?
@Neonomide
@Neonomide 19 дней назад
@@User98681 My initial theory was that taurine simply worked by decreasing appetite and therefore changing energy balance. Yet there seems to be a noticeable increase in fat oxidation as well which may explain some of the effect on weight, too: ”fat oxidation increased by 40% with 6 g of taurine (p < 0.05), suggesting that a higher dose was necessary to stimulate lipid metabolism. Furthermore, a decrease of 4% was observed in the respiratory quotient when compared to the placebo group, suggesting a relative intensification in lipid and beta-oxidation [54]. Moreover, our results showed a glycerol threshold of around 0.40 µm/dL for both TAU supplementation doses, making it evident that the increase in glycerol levels was an effect promoted by the exercise session; however, this was in association with the results of the lipid oxidation, which were superior to the placebo. Thus, our data indicate that taurine promoted an additional effect on lipid oxidation.”

@@ainahaga You should try taking 6 grams +300 mg l-theanine (too much will make you sleepy)+150 organic caffeine like from tea, green coffee, matcha. Very good three-way synergy between those. Also I am vegan (yeah I know the cliche' telling everybody that I am vegan) but as a vegan I need a good choline supplement like alpha-gpc and l-carnitine (I take propionyl l-carnitine). I have noticed a world of difference with alpha-gpc because since I don't consume eggs, I don't really have a good source other than nutritional yeast which has a lot of choline it that rivals eggs. Nuts have a bit of choline but not nearly enough. I am also now taking what I consider the most advanced and best form of creatine magnesium creatine chelate and have noticed immense improvements in my energy levels taking this stack. The magnesium creatine chelate is good because the magnesium acts like an alkaline buffer in the stomach so the stomach acid doesn't break it down into useless creatinine by-product. The magnesium is also driven into the muscles because it is bound to amino acids, and 50-100% of my magnesium in one (2.5g) to two (5g) servings is fantastic because magnesium is quite difficult to get enough of since it is water soluble and not very common. You can also try tmg betaine but make sure you source it from non-gmo beets because sugar beets are a common gmo crop as back in 2008 they allowed to gmo all of them with the bt gene (derived from a microbe in soil) making them resistant to glyphosate.

@larsnystrom6698
@larsnystrom6698 15 дней назад
Probably because humans create enough taurine, at least when young, to not show any deficency. We probably need more of it from food. But if we don't get enough of it, we blame our frailty on old age. It's of course not just lack of taurine, but many other things too that makes us not age well. Taurine hasn't been researched enough to know how it works. That makes it difficult to find out how much we need.

@AncestralFuel

@danconwell4842 Месяц назад
From the various studies I've seen, seafood and grains and root vegetables are the worst categories. From this I would infer that grain fed meat is worse than grass fed meat. Grain fed meat may well be as bad or worse than seafood. Of course there is also a complex bioaccumulation effect with fish (just like with avoiding mercury) so the lower down the food chain the fish is the better.. i.e. whitebait, anchovies better option than tuna, cod, etc.

The title of the video seems click-baity and misleading given the conclusion. As you implicitly acknowledge yourself: there seems to be no downside to supplementing taurine other than the cost, and potentially quite a lot of upside. One "use case" you didn't mention is to counter taurine deficiency which is common in older humans. The older you get, the more sense it makes to supplement. The quantity you supplement should probably gradually increase in old age, too. Supplementation seems the winner when compared to eating lots of tuna, since tuna and other fish often contain more heavy metals than you'd want to ingest. Not sure about bivalves and seaweeds. And obviously, this isn't just a dietary matter. Killing sentient fish so you can get your pRoTeiN and taurine seems like a poor ethical choice. By buying wild-caught fish you also support the industry responsible for 50% of plastics in the oceans, almost all of which comes in the form of nets. Those are the nets that seals and dolphins get caught up and drown in. 5-6 capsules of 1g of taurine daily doesn't seem so awful either. You can spread them out over each day. So... maybe you should re-write your take ("Why I'm not taking it")?
@SiimLand
@SiimLand Месяц назад
Hi, thanks for the feedback. In my videos I differentiate between what I personally do and take versus what I think is effective and has evidence. Taurine has evidence that it works in a certain population and like I said the clinical trials are done on people with poor metabolic health. A lot of people fall under that umbrella. I don't, which is why there's less expected gains for me from taurine. Maybe it'll change in the future, but for now it's not my priority.
