This little handgun is decently built and simple considering it retails right around the 200 dollar mark.

A bad guy isn't gonna be able to determine what he got shot with. It doesn't matter what you're shooting. From .22 to .45. Both will sit you down! Just make sure your accurate with whatever you're shooting.

Back in 1995, I was considering the PT22 and the Beretta 21A. At the time, Taurus had issued a recall for the very early PT22s and the dealer convinced me to buy the Beretta. I've had no trouble with the 21A, but I've since run into folks who are very happy with their PT22s. As the narrator said, the .22LR is not the best choice for self defense, but for a piece you can put in your back pocket when the dog decides he needs a walk at 2:00 AM, either pistol is a LOT better than nothing.

Thanks for the video. I had to send one back to Taurus after fewer than 100 shots. Took me a couple of weeks to finally make contact with customer service. They did agree to fix/replace, but I had to pay for shipping there...which requires overnight. ($60) I will give them credit for quick turnaround...had it back a week later. Mine will not feed the next round if I use CCI Standard. (1050 fps) Works great if I use something in the 1250 fps range. Taurus lady told me not to use something too powerful like the Stingers, but I see others having no problem with them. Can't get mine to hand rack like you can yours, but maybe after a few hundred rounds that will start to happen. Not a big problem since it has the tip up barrel. Certainly a fund gun to shoot. For those asking to see one shoot I have a short clip that shows it to be a pretty accurate gun considering its size.

We just bough one of these for my wife for the exact reasons you stated. Actually I started shopping for a Beretta 3032 Tomcat, and found out they are no longer being made. Frankly, I don't understand why... It's a very user friendly design. I haven't looked for .22 ammo lately. The last time I did a few years ago, it was scarce..... Nice job on the video!

I really enjoy my PT-22. As you mentioned, stay away from high velocity ammo, but I'd also mention stay away from low velocity. I cannot use CCI Standard in my gun. Mini-Mags, Golden Bullets, Thunderbolt and Federal Bulk work fine...just be sure to clean the barrel after each 25 or so rounds.

The hammer is not the only thing putting tension on the slide. There is a recoil lever on either side of the grip with a spring attached and they hook into either side of the slide. Yes there is extra initial resistance from the hammer but the majority of slide movement is controlled by the recoil springs/spring guides/levers on both sides of the grip. Not trying to knit pick, just for viewer info.

If you slightly pull the trigger while taking off the slide it releases a bit of the tension on the slide making it easier to take off.

You can pull the trigger again for a second strike. Some 22lr ammo can be notorious for having the strike twice in order to set it off.

If you look at the top of each grip panel. You'll see a piece of metal that sticks out about an1/8 of an inch. It goes into a small notch on either(both) sides of the bottom of the slide. Those are torsion bars. If you remove the grip panel u can see them push down on either side, a small compression spring. Those are the pt22 "recoil" springs. The hammer does do a lot to hold the slide in place. But w/o those torsion bars, when u pulled the hammer back, the slide would be just kinda sitting there.

I picked one up because it was cute but JAM,JAM,JAM. Tried different types of standard ammo and 2 different mags to no avail so I resold it on consignment. I didn't like the fact that it doesn't have an extractor to pull the empty shell out. First Taurus I ever had a problem with.
@Marine052191

I carry mine everyday. Yes its not ideal, but like you said shotpkacement. Most encounters happen within 5-7yards so, easy peasy. I honestly like the DAO, the safety is redundant though. I carry it in "off" position with such a long heavy trigger pull. My trigger came around 7.5-8lbs!

Hey Miller, I had the Beretta model and it was a jam queen. FTE issues that Beretta could not fix. Tried all types of ammo as I really had a place for this type of gun, but could never resolve the FTE issue. About only gun I have EVER returned. I also noted a safety issue with unloading as the Beretta does not eject a chambered round with a slide pull back since it does not have an extractor. I had to investigate a fatal shooting due to that issue. Grandpa thought it was unloaded but it wasn't

They have this same pistol in .25 ACP if you don't want the rimfire pistol. I would go with which ever one I can get ammo for at the time. I lean toward .25 acp at this time due to ammo availability and cost plus the lower chance of misfire from a centerfire round.

I bought a PT25 last year but haven't shot it yet. My thinking was a center fire round would be more likely to go bang on each trigger pull rather than those questionable 22LR's.
@Tenacious21
@Tenacious21 11 лет назад
So since it's double action, if you get a misfire, can you pull the trigger a few more times till it fires, or would it be better to just clear and re-chamber?

From watching the video it appears this gun needs a safety because it forces you to carry with one in the chamber. If you have to tip up the barrel to load in the last one to make it cycle then you really couldn't carry it just with a loaded magazine. Do you think this gun would be good to clear snakes?

After one puts a few hundred rounds through these, the slide resistance becomes much less compared to new and the malfunctions drop to about nil.

you said a 22lr is not a good choice for defense .dont you know if a 22lr bullet is put in the heart or the brain what will happen or even to the face for that matter.a 22 lr is a good defense round.anywhere in the face and it will do major damage.im not gonna call you any names but i strongly disagree with you
@MultiMM68
@MultiMM68 8 лет назад
+Allen Weatherly I agree with you too. A 22lr is no BB or pellet. It can kill you with the right shot placement. I rapid fired my PT22 into an old steel garage. Result- 9 holes with-in a 2.5 foot diameter from 25 feet. Almost the width of a human trunk. Oh and the bullets went through the other side of the steel wall.
@davesmith5092
@davesmith5092 8 лет назад
+Allen Weatherly It's not about killing an attacker, it's about stopping them. Short of the brain, a 22lr probably won't be a quick stopping round. Yes, they guy might eventually die, but by then, you might be also be dead.

Honestly these things like the hot HV stuff--it cycles very reliably with hot stuff. Honestly, my SIG 1911-22 is the same in that it jams lots with SV 22lr Bulk but is 100% with HV ammo. Revolvers are the only real reliable choice for .22lr SV ammo IMO.
@tubbs200803
@tubbs200803 9 лет назад
Wrong. There are two recoil springs under the grip panels which make contact to small grooves underneath the slide. That coupled with the heavy DAO hammer make it difficult to charge the slide in the traditional manner. This is why the tip up barrel is part of the design.

"clearing the gun: "tack- rack"I don't think theres an extractor ;so racking the slide will not pull the faulty cartridge out of the chamber; perhaps it can be dumped out by holding the slide to thereat turning the gun up so it falls out due to gravity.

My father was accidentally shot in the foot by a .22 and was crippled for months. it does not matter what caliber you get shot by, it will mess you up either way. Also, I recently purchased a PT22 and found CCI ammo to be to the WORST choice for mine. 38 Federal American Eagle works best for me.
@QuestoDomini
@QuestoDomini 8 лет назад
This in fact does have a recoil spring(s), it's just recessed in the sides of the rear end of the inner frame. The long heavy-ish DA trigger and a magazine safety disconnect is a downer for me, but not a deal breaker. The .25 ACP model is much the same layout, and feel, with everything like the safety and mag release button in the right places and the grip that feels good in the hand, it balances out the pro's/cons discussion. The .22's more fun to shoot, I am more likely to shoot .22 LR, than say .25 ACP that goes for lots more $'s per box of 50 ... so there's that. If you can find one, the better way to go is the Beretta DA/SA alternative. The Beretta so nice that my sister after shooting it, wouldn't give it back to me and still has it, and after 20 years, giving it back's not even on the table. Nothing against the PT22, it's solid and has a rep for never jamming up with any manufacture ammo, so it's a keeper. Just my 2 cents...

I have read statistics that when firearms are used, be it self defense or criminal activity, the 38 special and 22 cal rounds are the most commonly used. I have had some great target 22s in the past ( S & M 41 ). Every gun would jam once and a while in that calibre. I would be afraid to use it in self defense.

@BoomBoom-cf4bq
@BoomBoom-cf4bq 9 лет назад
Jonathon Blackburn You have that a little wrong, check the Wikipedia article if you like, but the Brady Bill was named in honor of the Reagan Press Secretary that was one of those shot in the head by the .22 revolver by Hinckley when he was shooting at Reagan. He had explosive 22lr bullets, but the only one that actually exploded was the one that hit Brady, giving him severe brain damage and putting him in a wheel chair until his death not long ago. The gun control activist organization is named for him and his wife is one of the leaders. Main point that 22lr can kill is definitely true. I have a PT22 and enjoy shooting it. I've considered carrying it since I've gotten to the point where I can easily hit a face size target at 10 feet just by sticking my arm straight out.

I have used Remington gold hollow, CCI hollow, and stingers, Winchester hollow 1435 fps, Agulara high velocity, Remington, thunderbolts and cyclones and probably a dozen other ammo. All had feeding problems. What I found was plated and hollow points don't work very well in my gun. I use Federal white box 325 rounds, 40 grain lead round nose plane Jane ammo, and it works consistently.No More Jams. Also, don't judge right out of the box, mine was awful stiff until I got about 1500 rounds through it. Mine likes lots of oil. Also, make sure you tighten the grip screws and the mag release button on occasion. My mag release fell out and the spring behind it went missing. Cost me 13 dollars for another spring. Uncle Mike makes a baby bet holster for this that works great. And can be made left handed, light weight gun, lethal round, easy to carry, cheap to shoot, and 9 more rounds store in your wallet. Be not afraid of any man, no matter what his size. When danger threatens call on me and I will equalize.
