Taurus TX-22 Magazine Lubrication For Reliable Operation

Had a couple of failure to feeds yesterday at the range with my Taurus TX-22. Further examination suggests to me that:
1. I didn't pay close enough attention to loading the rounds and relieving 'nose dive' in a couple of mags. Once I paid closer attention to this I had no more failures.
2. The troublesome magazines were not doing a good job moving the follower without excess friction.
I went home and analyzed the magazines. I found 4 out of 6 had some issues with excessive friction. I treated those with 'Mag Slick' and got 3 of the 4 working acceptably. The 6th is better, but not quite up to my standards.

I have a new TX22 pistol that I purchased for my wife to practice and become familiar with full size pistol "feel" that suffers failure to feed, right out of the box. I have since disassembled mags, used my Dremel and Flitz paste with a wool polishing wheel on the top areas of the ramps. I cleaned the insides and removed sharp edges of mags, then used my 3in1 lock dry lube for repair and ability to feed the Federal truncated Spitfire rounds, plus all others so far. I recently also purchased a Taurus G3C pistol and discover that Taurus ships their pistols out Filthy inside, with plenty of flawed workmanship issues. The ergonomics of Taurus pistols are to die for, their quality control and customer service is Nil. I also had to replace the factory extractor with the Tandem Cross Eagle Talon unit to remedy lack of cycling and extraction issues for all ammo. My friend who I go to the range with has 2 TX22s, one the Competition model and they both work flawlessly. The TX22 keyholed rounds in the paper target initially, but fixed itself after about 100 rounds.I would pay more for a pistol that practiced quality control, as my Ruger, Colt, S & W, Daewoo.

3 of my 6 TX22 magazines had regular failure to feed issues. On those mags, when worked the tabs up and down, I could feel it "catching" in spots, where the movement was not smooth. Like the follower wanted to stop, get hung up in some areas. Taking the mags apart, with the spring out, I noticed the action on the follower and those tabs was totally free and smooth. It occurred to me that it felt as though the spring was not compressing properly and binding up. When replacing the spring, I paid attention to compressing it evenly (as opposed to just shoving it in there). Lo and behold, the mag operated smoothly with no binding. I did the same with the other 2 mags. On one of them, I had to remove and replace the spring a second time to get it right. As an added measure, I disassembled and cleaned all the mags and applied some dry lube. If you want to work the follower and tabs up and down 200-300 times (as you mentioned in your other video), it's MUCH easier without the spring in the mag! Really though, that isn't needed as you will likely find that action to be smooth already. Getting the spring installed properly is what seems to make a very significant change. I just now did all this, so I have not put any rounds through with the "fixed" magazines. I think they will be fine. Once I do, I will follow up and let you know how it worked.

That is a good suggestion checking spring binding. I am going to check that out.

@@gunsandpolitics5510 Follow up: I shot over 1,000 rounds using all 6 of my magazines with zero FTF. I'm certain at this point that reinstalling the spring so it is aligned properly is the fix for the problem with these magazines. I did lube them as well as I am sure that will help keep the springs from binding. I should also give a shout out to Kevin Miller at Tandemkross for providing me valuable information which helped me figure this out. I had emailed and asked why their TX22 magazine springs were no longer available. He explained they were longer and stronger than stock and caused FTF problems. My initial thought was to replace the stock springs with longer, stronger springs, thinking that would cure the FTF problem. His response saved me a lot of time, effort, and a little bit of money.

I never lube mags I just keep them clean and if I do have a problem mag the first thing I check is the follower for a possible burr. I also put tandemkross 5 rd mag extensions with tandemkross green springs and they work flawlessly. Happy shooting everyone.

This RU-vid video and post was very helpful I did exactly what the gentleman did other than the Teflon but I cleaned and I messed with the with springs tensioning them down a little bit in and out and it did help immediately the gun fired all the rounds when I went back cleaned out the magazine inside

Great advice. Have to try this on my TX 22 mags for sure. Just a note of caution, teflon is really harmful stuff...I'd wear gloves and a mask when spraying that stuff.

The fix for me after cleaning with other lubes several times seemed to finally be ballastol and rinsing with warm water since the mag is almost entirely polymer. Leave the spring dry and assemble the mag dry without any lubricants and it began working for me. Your mileage may vary but it got me up and running.

This video was absolutely the most helpful one i have yet to view. I started having severe failures to feed, stovepipes, misfires, and failures to go into battery. I saw this video and couldn't believe the answer was so simple, but I tried it anyway. Only when I tried to pull the follower down the magazine and hit major resistance did it occur to me that that might be the problem. I have about four or five thousand rounds through the TX22 for which I have four mags. I used a mag brush, cleaned the inside of each mag, and then lubricated all parts with a Teflon dry lube picked at Home Depot. Went to the range today and the gun shot like it was new. Shot a couple of hundred rounds without a single issue. Thank you for the advise!

My can of MagLube is about empty. I bought a can of Teflon spray off Amazon to replace it. Haven't tried it yet, but will probably work fine. I've found the tolerances on the TX-22 mags to be hit or miss. I don't think they reinforced the middle part enough so it can kind of bend or warp slightly and mess it up. Mostly it's subtle and harmless, but worst case it sticks just enough to cause failure to feeds. Two of my six mags work great - they go up and down without a hitch. The other four had friction to one degree or another. Three of those mostly freed up with the Teflon. The fourth is still kind of meh. If your mag followers go up and down without any noticable drag, I think I would actually recommend not spraying anything in them. I've got probably 50 magazines and have sprayed Teflon in about 40 of them. Best of luck!

The spray can of Blaster Dry Lube with Teflon that I found at Lowes leaves a white powdery coating on everything. I'm not sure I would want to leave that amount of powdery residue inside the magazine waiting to cake up. You must have used something different. I think I would rather just use a bit of CLP cleaner, lubricant, preservative on a Q-Tip to lightly oil the internal walls of the magazine.
@KalanYore
@KalanYore 4 года назад
The other option is to replace the spring if the lubrication can't improve or to look carefully inside the mag to see any imperfections where the spring is making rough contact; for example like paint overspray layer that is thick enough to make it rough to bits of metal that is adhering inside the magazine? Thanks for sharing your observation and solution as I see it is a common problem with .22 magazines of any firearm?

I originally used a spray on quick dry teflon lube. I am now investigating using essentially an auto wax that was suggested on someone else's channel (sorry, forget the reference). This is dry an makes a slick, durable surface.

Just spraying may not remove dirt snd grit but just bond it to the magazine. Start by taking them apart and brush clean them. Also see if there are burs on the follower.

If you use the mag loader that came with the gun,you want have any problems. Do not use the thumb tabs. Its not a single stack mag. The rounds have to be offset correctly.

Lots of Lube spray into DIRTY mags, no indication you cleaned the interior first. Do it right, dismantle the entire Mag and clean with Windex and a small rag, wipe it clean & dry (Like a dirty barrel) THEN use the Mag Slick. Never lube over dirt or grit.

Take ‘em apart and clean ‘em with soapy water, dry them with compressed air, then lube ‘em. Plastic on plastic has more friction than metal mags. Takes a bit of finesse.

I ordered a magazine brush from Tipton some time back. It's a bit tight for 22 mags, but not bad. I've tried everything from pipe cleaner brushes to toothbrushes to bottle cleaning brushes and large bore cotton swabs. They all work more or less. I got curious about this and I'm looking right now for a magazine brush sized just a little smaller than the Tipton brush (it is only five bucks on Amazon by the way.)

I just took my new tx22 to the range. A loaded mag would fail first few bullets. I’d have to remove magazine to remove lodged bullet. If I only loaded them 8-10 bullets, it mostly worked. The staff said it’s due to being new and that I didn’t oil it enough. Is that true? I’m brand new.

Same problem with one of the magazines. Lubricating didn't help. Other magazine works fine - failure to feed once in a great while. But that's better than a jam.

I had the same issues when I tried to hand load the magazines. I figured out that hand loading them didn't line the bullets up correctly. I used the little plastic magloader in the case to load the bullets and it worked just fine after that.

Any lubricant in a magazine always a bad road to go down..lubricants prevent shell casing from completing full gas sealing in chamber at moment of ignition. Results ingas blowback and throat damage to gun. Lubricants also attract dirt and grit which acts like a grinding paste in a gun actuon.Always run mags clean and dry, never introduce any lubricant into gun chamber.🤠🤠
