Taylor Swift brings out a special guest during her New York City show at Madison Square Garden: Johnny Rzeznik. Taylor and Johnny sing the Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris"
I would agree that "Iris" is one of the best songs ever written. He penned it in one night after a severe case of writer's block. It still gives me chills. Not to mention it's one of the most recognized song on the mandolin in history.
@@ellemichelle261 I do! The Goo Goo dolls are one of my favorite bands! And I also hail from Buffalo New York where they are also from. Have a good day.
Iris really is one of the greatest songs ever written! Mad respect to Taylor for agreeing! The Goo Goo dolls are definitely one of my favorite bands in the world.
I think it'd be the other way around! Big honour for her playing one of the greatest songs ever written with the writer and rock royalty in John Rzeznik.
I'm sorry, but selling alot of records doesn't make her legit. She's a female Bieber. Pablum for the masses. You want someone female whos truly talented then go get yourself a Metric album. Or Jenny Lewis. Or Angela Pearly. Or dig out old Cheryl Crow for nostalgia
@@kris_pang It doesn't validate it either, though. It just means she's popular with teen and young girls and I'll leave it at that. Like I said, PABLUM FOR THE MASSES
@@sdc7823 and being popular with teen and young girls is a bad thing? shes the most successful singer of your our time, i think its fair to say she has at least some level of talent.
Him bowing out for the best part of the song coupled with the second best part (the beginning) drowned out the potential for this to be legit amazeballs. It was ruined..
@@dmlaughlin1 Nah they wrote loads of big songs. Name was their breakout song and was everywhere for a time - some the best lyrics you’ll ever hear. Most of the big hits are from the 6th album ‘Dizzy up the girl’ which Iris is from. That album had Black Balloon, Slide and Broadway as hits. After that it is a few singles here and there like ‘Here Is Gone’. Definitely not a one hit wonder, Iris just happens to be one of the biggest songs of all time.
Thank you for capturing this wonderful moment. Never have I imagined Taylor singing this live. The fact that she sang one of the most perfectly written lyrics is just unfathomable.
John and Taylor are both amazing in this duet........he hugs her at the end and walks backstage with her........awwwwwwww.........theyre both so sweet......they both have angelic faces, too.......
I love both of these kids. I say kids because I'm old enough to be their father. Taylor doesn't know this, but she inspired me to take up banjo. I would love to play along with a song or two sometime. I'm glad they did this though - two great peoole; wonderful musicians.
OMG that was SO GOOD. The NY City fans were going ABSOLUTELY BONKERS at this concert 🙆♂️🙆♀️. Fans loved this song as these 2 stars nailed this classic tune live.
another great example of Taylor having fun with music wow!! Iris that;s just wow and to have Johnny from the Dolls what a tremendous song to play, still just as good now as way back!!! Thanks Taylor for sharing.
The song is Iconic, Johnny is just amazing, and Taylor closing a show out like that is just taking it to the next level of OMG the crowd goes crazy.. Hell that would get me excited
January of 2020 and I'm just now learning that this happened. The Goo Goo Dolls, especially Johnny, and their music have meant so much to me since I was a kid. I've only really become a Taylor fan in the last 6 years or so. This was absolutely amazing. I love that Taylor appreciates just how incredible 'Iris' (and Johnny) is.
The tuning for the guitar for this song is super crazy so for anyone who wants to play this without the crazy tuning, here are the chords! If you want a more detailed explanation, check out the lesson I made for it on my channel :) Intro: B, G Verse and Chorus: D, D/E, G, B, A, and back to G
I love that she consistently pays homage to the music and musicians who made her what she is today. Everyone has a foundation, and she treats hers very well.
The Goos come from my neck of the woods so we had enjoyed them before they reached worldwide notoriety. We are very proud of them and they do alot for the communities whenever they come back in town.
I NEVER get tired of watching this. One of my favorite duets, probably the BEST I've ever seen. ESPECIALLY based on crowd reaction. That was so LOUD Baby, MSG can ROCK 🤯
Taylor did a good job, but this song is definitely suited for a man's voice. Johnny sings it with such passion. But I love how he's so cool with other people singing his songs, he totally lets her take the spotlight with it. But just everything about hsi personality gives me huge respect and admiration for him. He's so humble and intelligent and just and downright cool.
I think it might be the vocal range of the song? Sometimes when she covers male songs she seems to sing them in the original vocal range because her vocal range is pretty close to that of a lot of male pop singers (who tend to have fairly high pitched voices (tenor/countertenor). Ex when she performed Angels with Robbie Williams. And then when she covers male rock songs, those are more likely to be by baritones in which case I think she just sings them a full octave higher than the male original? But John's vocal range seems be somewhere in between so neither approach works particular well for her?
I find it criminal that he didn't get to sing any part of the big chorus near the end. If they alternated the lyrics as the chorus "I don't want the world to see me - Rzeznik; " 'cause I don't think that they'd understand - Taylor", "When everything's made to be broken" - John, " I just want you to know who I am x 1 or 2" - both at once harmonizing. This would've been a great way to do some of it and you could reverse the role exchange in part of who sings which line and it would still work well. Then they end by handing the mic to the crowd to repeat it like a non alternating chorus. Then Rzeznik and Taylor Swift come in both at once again at the very end of the song's last line. This would all be sung with the power of the original creation by Rzeznik. Just my two cents on how it could've been better, although still good as is.
You know you're getting old when the goo goo dolls are being called legends hehe. I remember when the Dizzy album came out. Back then, the ones being called legends were bands like The Police...times change. And BTW - this song is still as good as it was when I first heard it.
I cant get enough of this song.. I've covered it in various tunings and it always pleases everyone regardless of which tuning I perform it in. I totally loved this performance 💜
Iris is my #1 and slide is my #2 by GOO-GOO DOLLS interestingly enough...I never ever knew Taylor did this duet with Johnny R it's just absolutely amazingly beautiful ❤️ and wonderfully performed 🎸 WOW 🔥🔥🔥
I’m having a massive nostalgia trip. Iris was me and an ex’s song. 2 of m favorite singers on stage, together, singing a very special song for me. This is awesome! Plus Taylor Swift done a whole session with Def Leopard, my favorite group ❤️❤️❤️
This is awesome that he and he are both playing this song of his during her concert and thru the both of them even:) way to go to be doing it thru you both Taylor!!😊
Never knew about this duo before. But this is no doubt one of the best songs of all time. One of the best songs with one of the current hottest trending artists on the planet right now.
This video just stumbled upon my recommendation feed, and I can't believe i hadn't seen this till now. Just watching this performance makes the Taylor Swift and Goo Goo Dolls fan in me happy.
guys chill out! this is an INCREDIBLY difficult song to sing. Johnny Rzeznick has a very unique range and voice. Also, this song is definitely written for a male voice and range. No girl will sound right singing it, especially not like Johnny. So just chill!
@@june-june901 Sorry June Bae but Jada cover is not bad but she is using auto tune to help her voice and studio effects to shade her voice. Jonny uses all his voice no studio to enhance or auto tune to help him sing this.
"his song is definitely written for a male voice and range" one of the dumbest comments that I've ever read. A song is a song no matter who is singing it.
@@bigelile07 I disagree with that actually. Certain songs fit certain sexes sometimes. Anyone can make it their own but sometimes you do run into a song that just doesn’t work any other way. This is one. Johnny R is an incredible vocal talent though, so to be fair, most people don’t do his songs well. There are numerous songs that only sound good with female pipes as well in my opinion. Not meant to offend anyone, just a musician’s take. Regardless they both did great, whatever. Taylor Swift isn’t my thing, but I respect her for branching out to other musicians.
