That first time where the music drops low and she hit me with the ",you're on your own kid, you always have been" felt like a bucket of cold water thrown on me. I was destabilized in the universe.

I just wanna say this is my favorite midnights breakdown ever because it's coming from a major og swiftie AND a writer. the way you connect all the songs and pointing out all the things I have completely missed (which was most of them). such a great video, loved everything about it.

This is... So interesting. I love how we all interpret things differently. To me Maroon is Older Taylor's retrospective on the song Red and her relationship with Jake. Maroon is a darker shade of red and I think what's really telling is the production of the song. The notes in the background have this unnerving feeling to them even though in the first verse she is describing this cute relationship. The echo of "it was maroon" and how it almost feels like she was cutting herself off. Also I think we've discussed the red scarf symbolizes her virginity and I think "I wake with your memory over me" is her reflecting on how she will never be able to forget him because he was her first. There's no way that girl wrote a whole break up album and he didn't get one song on an album about the nights that kept her up at night. A relationship she remembers all too well. The speculation is that Enchanted is about the guy that sings the song Fireflies. He made a response and everything and Taylor just didn't respond 😅 Midnight Rain in my heart of hearts I REALLY want it to be about Lautner because he's my favorite of her exes and she paints the guy in such a flattering light. Which I feel like Lautner was the only ex she ever really did that with. "My boy was a montage - slow motion love potion jumping off things in the ocean." She and Lautner dated at the hight of his fame with Twilight and he was every girl's dream at the time. Also "he wanted a bride I was making my own name" could be a reference that if they had gotten married they would both be Taylor Lautner and she wanted her own name. There's also a rumor that Haunted was written to be for New Moon and was rejected so Haunted could reference him. And "sometimes we all get what we wanted" could reference that he got married to a girl named Taylor.

Finally someone who appreciates Paris as much as I do! That song is so joyous and such a blast

ALSO I want to add few things about Harry references in Question- the sample of Question is basically the same (in the beginning) as Keep Driving from Harry’s House AND in the very beginning of Question we can hear “I remember” which is clearly cut out of Out of the woods which is about Harry of course ❤this girl is a GENIUS

Snow on the Beach took some time to grow on me but it snuck up on me to be one of my favorites from the album. Just the imagery of thinking your love being returned being as impossible as snow on a beach but it’s coming down (all around) until you’re surrounded by it and it’s undeniable (+ weird ! + fucking beautiful !) (as an aside it reminds me a lot of the beach scene from Catching Fire!)

“Can this be a real thing can it” also takes me back to the all to well short film and it’s opening shot where it flashes “are you real”and how she doesn’t quite trust him because he makes her feel that similar red/maroon feeling

Yay! I've been waiting for your deep dive ever since the album came out! Also I think most people believe that Enchanted is about Adam Young (aka Owl City). Apparently, people found a lot of little clues referencing him in the album booklet, and Adam did a cover of it directly referencing her by name. I love the idea of them singing it to each other.

Christine, I have watched you since 2013 and I can assuredly say that these t swift breakdown theories have become more and more unhinged with each album 😂 and I love it so much! Throwback to when you swore ready for it… was about Taylor Lautner!! 😆

I think it’s so cool how much this album connects to lyrics in folklore for you cause I barely noticed that at all! But I definitely agree with all of the connections you found. I've been waiting for this!! I appreciate all the hard work that went into this video! For me, maroon was about the person All too well is about and thus "it's real fucking legacy to leave" line = JG. "The rubies that I gave up" line seemed like a metaphor to losing her virginity (which is a weird thing to comment on, sorry). The Maroon song arc seemed to me like the same relationship arc that can be seen in the ATW short film. The great war and exile have similar themes of her isolating herself and exiling him, which connects to your folklore theory.

The Great War and its connected songs make me not necessarily think of a 3rd person being involved and them splitting up or nearly splitting up but more of a second version of Taylor herself, who self-sabotages everything good and was unable to let herself be happy and accept this man for who he is and being good and good to her. So unlike everything she's experienced before. I also think it goes well with Would've Could've Should've. Like she punished Joe for things he never did because she was used to shitty behaviour and being abused and manipulated in relationships. So she went into the one with Joe with that background and instead of communicating to him how she felt she took the battle underground and fought against him tho he did nothing. He just triggered those old memories and traumas (the past screaming from the crypt)
