if you want to turbo a tb42 then this is for you. I tried to fit as much information i could into the shortest time possible, it turned out really long but hopefully theres some valuable information in her for you.
This was a sick video I've got a tb and have thought about doing a turbo setup but being new to the 4x4 scene all the research has been a put off this video just solved and explained pretty much everything thanks mate keep up the awesome work
THANK THE LORD the video I’ve been waiting for mate. Been following for a while! Have spent the last few months researching on forums & FB. Have worked the general idea out but this was the final touch I needed to give me the OK to start my build. Tb42e with 5 - 8psi is all I want 🤘🏻 Much appreciated mate
This is MINT! I put my turbo on a while before you uploaded this but you have put all the info i could find on the web and more into one video, AWESOME! For anyone watching this for a TB45 turbo install, based on doing mine and what i have found on the web most of this applys to TB45 as well, including the water drain in the block and the oil feed position and thread. I wish you did this earlier lol, i have learnt most of these lessons the hard way...
Thank you for a ton of info. This is a great start to help me toward a minor upgrade to my truck. Hope to see you on the tracks some time when she is done
Thanks for checking it out mate. Only real difference is the injectors. Need a top feed rail conversion, and the forward facing plenum doesn’t work. Also keep in mind the smaller rods, can’t handle as much power.
Bloody ripper clip!! Highly appreciate it when people do a good video on what it costs average Aussie joe blow to do these things. I wish there was a video like this on hiluxs, deciding to not follow the crowd with a ct20 has been a headache at best but hopefully it’ll pay off with my boost curve! This was a good watch and I’m not even looking to build a tb!
Hey mate, love your work, very informative. I refurbished my TB42e about 2 years ago and had a custom made headgasket made from a mob in NSW and I got my self a set of ARP head studs, they make ones with the right thread that goes in the block but I had to cut about 10mm off them. They work great.
Thanks for watching mate! Tb45 is a little bit different, they have smaller/light rods to reduce rotating mass but that also means they aren’t as strong, so it’s a good idea to keep the boost lower unless you swap some other rods in. People use tb42 rods with the 45 pistons. Also the intake manifolds are one piece and the injectors are side feed. Cheers
Thanks for the upload, always watch till the end! You make it pretty easy! Tb look like really good engine, would love to build one one day Cheers mate 🍻🍻
Hey Dan lov the vid mate awesome information mate I’ve decided to throw the tb42 carb in the bin mate going down tb45e mate for fuel injection and still keeping the 5 speed but I am thinking of going down the turbo way with her but cheers for the vid mate you have give awesome information mate thanks again Dan keep those vids coming mate Cheers mark 👍😁

Great vid! As a td42 owner it’s great to get this info for a good alternative to a Barra on an LS conversion with probably less long term headaches with reliability etc. Impressive torque and power from your setups, do you know if they have crank snapping issues like a tuned up td42? Do they share a similar bottom end design?? Cheers
In my opinion it’s a better option than an engine conversion! As far as I know I Havnt seen any cranks broken. Possibly less harmonics in the petrol engine. The bottom end design is fairly similar!
I dont drive my tb42 above 2 thousand for normal driving. But mine does have about 400k on the clock. Clock broke first, still all factory. Wonder if a turbo would help the 24litres to 100kms
@@DanielKistler yeah exactly and goin off your setup compared to mine its almost identical (less water meth) +headstuds so gives me a bit more confidence it will hold up to a beating. Hopefully dopey dan doesnt lockdown regional and i can go away next weekend 🤞
Good day Sir, I am from the Caribbean I have a 1995 nissan patrol safari. It came with the carburetor version tb42 I wanted to know more about conversation kits to make it fuel injection and if possible turbo. I need your professional advice. Thanks Haman.
hey mate, great video. I've got a couple of burnt valves in my TB, so I will be ripping the head off and replacing the valves, machining out and replacing the seats and putting in better springs and new gaskets and O-rings etc. As I am definitely chasing more power I want to accommodate future upgrades, the car goes pretty well how it is but what are my options for bigger valves? is there room in the head for them and enough gap between the valves for them? and if so where can I get them? don't want to spend a crazy amount but would like to do that if I am going as far as doing the machine work anyway... I will also be porting the head too. thanks.
Hey mate, thanks for watching. Personally I wouldn’t worry about bigger valves. Maybe if you were keeping it non turboed. I’ve had one of my heads ported out but Havnt done a back to back to see the difference. Cheers
Bottom end doesn’t need anything if your not chasing huge numbers. I updated to individual coils with the Haltech. No need for the dizzy then, only for the cas
Hey mate just thinking of turboing my carby gas tb and was wondering what the best blow through carby was and the best way to have the gas go through with boost or how that is set up

Thanks mate. Hard to say, depends on the life it’s had. Wouldn’t hurt to pull the head off and check out the cylinders. Get the head checked out and chuck a fresh gasket in with new bolts.
hey mate i’ve got a tb42 carby and i’m wanting to convert to efi but i’m stuck on what kit to get as i wanna turbo mine any help would be appreciated cheers
Hey mate, i have a TB24S with 220xxx that im converting to EFI via a Holley Sniper kit. i dont want massive power just a good amount and some noise for cheap. where are some links to parts youd use if i want to make safe HP without doing any major engine work? if theres a kit or something or some links to some parts to use id be thrilled.
Hey mate just have a quick search online. Most of the stuff I’d use is all mentioned in this video. I personally wouldn’t use that kit for efi and I also wouldn’t go into it half hearted. But that’s just me. Cheers
@@DanielKistler That was a good show, how’s that big block going, 454 fits in with a nip an tuck, I’m all for Australian made. Patriot through to the bone. 🔫🔫🛠🤌🏻🤌🏻
Hey bud, I’m wanting to get some more power out of my tb4.2 efi but unfortunately can not turbo because I’m on my P’s. What could I do to push more power?
Hey mate, I’d just be saving your money until your off your p plates. Can’t get that much more out of them without major engine work that costs a lot and would probably make it not good for a turbo set up!
Gday mate I don’t fully understand all the numbers. Im hoping you can give me your opinion on this turbo. Im planing on a tb42e turbo low boost maybe 8psi but I want something that will get boost early on I don’t need it to do 15psi at 5500 rpm just want it to come on early and hold until about 4500 at most. What do you think I’d get from this Turbo Details Flange: T3 Cooled Type: Oil cooled Bearing: Journal bearing Turbine port: V band Waste gate actuator : Adjustable from 7.5psi - 14.53 psi Housr Power: 300-400 HP Compressor Wheel: A / R: 0.5 ||Ind:50.5 mm|| Exd:76 mm|| Trim: 44.2 Turbiner Wheel: A / R:0.63 ||Ind:65.5 mm|| Exd:55.9 mm|| Trim: 72.8
@@DanielKistler yep sure is just want it for a month or 2 to sus out weather or not it’s the right size so I know what to buy in decent quality. So as for the size of it what are your thoughts
@@robertmaher2981 personally wouldn’t waste my time, if your only looking at using it for a month or 2 you’ll then have to re make the dump pipe and your lines to mount a new one. The sizing is pretty average, I ran one for a while and wish I didnt. There is heaps of info out there with dyno sheets to back it up on what’s a good size turbo. You want laggy but a hard punch high in the rpm’s then use a falcon turbo, 3582 size. If you want a low punchy boost set up then something along the lines of a 3076 .82 rear. Or alternatively a hypergear atr43 which is what I run on my race car and love it.
The standard afm will be the limiting factor but somewhere around 10 is where I had mine at when I had a basic set up with a nistune! Thanks for watching mate.
Awesome video, iv got a tb42 carb swb, im gonna throw the carby in the bin and turbo it, would i be better off getting a tb42efi donar car swaping or just going haltech with the loom and getting the efi parts i need?
Thanks mate, your better off just going to a Haltech and just use the efi stuff that is necessary. If I ever do a conversion I will, once you make a start on it, it’s not too hard to sort out what you need.
Hey mate just watched through for a second time and noticed in the dyno sheets you compared to your mates car it said yours was tuned to unleaded with his on 98. why did you choose to not tune to 98 and how do you find it?
@@DanielKistler all good mate thanks anyway. Has anyone pushed one of these things forged and made big power yet ? Do you think under head cam would still flow enough air ?
@@DanielKistlerwas talking about the tb42 bro. Could they rev as high an overhead cam engine do u think ?? Also are they all gear drive with no chain ?? I’m kinda interested in them I have 2 petrol 80 series I know the 1fz well the tb42 I really like
@@mice6390 ah sorry haha. Definitely won’t see the rpm like a double overhead cam motor will, but at one stage I was revving mine to 6000. They are chain driven on the oil pump/cam. Very basic motor, but it’s like they were built to have a turbo 😂 don’t see massive power out of them but they are still impressive considering how old they are. The one in my race car makes 310kw.
