Dan is obviously a great mechanic/technician that’s had some excellent experience and is very good at explaining what he is doing and his methods and reasoning. As an old school mechanic myself I can not fault his workmanship, methods or how he explains how and why! Faultless video clip and runs rings around a lot of uTube mechanics or so called mechanics.

These symptoms sound so much like what's going on with my Land Rover Discovery. Any serious uphill load, and it overheats and begins puking coolant, but I can do 120 miles or so on the flat, and it's fine. Been driving me nuts. Finally bought a head gasket set and some ARP studs, and going to see what I find when I disassemble it.

Dan is the MAN! Great to have you back Dan. Maybe just pipe in now and then - I think we all love to hear your words of wisdom, honesty and brute force logic. I for one listen intently and take heed. You are the oracle of the Aussie Arvos mob. "I expect maybe 63.5kW at the wheels". I don't know - you haven't done anything for flow, so maybe, but if you are getting higher torque lower down that should mean you get to 63.5kW sooner in the rev range, so, you should expect a higher peak power? Fingers crossed.

Totally understand the desire to do things properly so you know you can rely on the car. I’ve got a hj75 cruiser and I bought it to start camping and going on trips. I’ve just finished doing rear axle bearings, axle seals, bearing seals, wheels cylinders and drums/shoes. But I got carried away and pulled the backing plates of, wire wheeled them, painted them… because I couldn’t bear to do all that work and fit new parts to dusty old mounting surfaces. While I’ve got these things apart, it’s a small bit of extra time and effort to really make it look a million bucks.

Well done great to see your work and tips thank you Once you start better off rip it out rebuild it all stronger and a small turbo on it low boost lumpy cam and bang all sweet. I had a similar thing with a td42 then ended lifting the lid off it when towing. I pulled it apart then ended up whole engine out fully rebuilt by southern engines as I didn’t have time unfortunately. Set it up for boost and now runs a healthy 300 hp at flywheel at 24 pound.

picked up a 89 patrol this week, partially modified, tb42, new head, rebuild trans, shonkin wiring for 12v system (will redo properly) sitting on 33 muddies, little rust in the roof, for $7k, only reason i even considered the 89 patrol was because of this patrol here on aussie arvo.

Not a fan of the old kettles (TB or TD) but it was very refreshing to watch this video when it was genuine and not a flog-fest of BS. That being said, very surprised that a transplant donk wasn't sourced and dropped in rather than keeping the fuel sucker.

Nothing wrong with preventative maintenance that's for sure! Done my injectors on my cruiser at 200,000 just because I was there doing the rocker cover gasket that was leaking. Hey mate, love your content and love the fact you guys always have a go but after 40 years of engine building theres a couple things you really need to know. Never, EVER, use an abrasive on an assembled block. This puts very fine grinding grit into the bores and can quickly cause damage. You wont see it and it will cause accelerated wear and damage. Never, EVER, used compressed air to clean debris out of the cylinders. This forces grit and other small particles between the piston and bore that you then cannot remove and guaranteed to cause damage and wear to bores, rings and pistons. When the head is off, cover with plastic or glad wrap, not rags, as they drop a lot of lint and debris. Cleanliness is paramount in long life of you engine. Always use a vacuum cleaner to get any debris out of the cylinders. Hope this helps

Heads up on the timing chain marks, a couple years ago I did a full top end on a 2005 Suzuki XL7 after the owner let the chain go till it derailed bent all 12 exhaust vales, I was all done went to start it and it would try but just couldn't quite go, did a bunch of testing and made the call to pull the timing cover off and look, low and behold the NEW chain had the marks in the wrong places! So hang on to your old chain and check them against the new ones! could have been real ugly but I got lucky.
