As a long time yugioh player who has played Magic,and only currently plays Vanguard for the past 2 years I would say that Vanguard (Premium format and not Overdress format) is a fantastic game with some noteworthy issues but ecstatic strategy and and gameplay. 9 people used to gather at my place for Yugioh nights and most of us switched to Vanguard(again ..only premium) and it's way more fun than what yugioh has came to be in the recent years(meta,banlists etc) I agree...availability is an issue for Vanguard but playwise ...as a game i would put it at low tier a-high tier b. The heat of the duel that you won in the very last second because of sheer strategy is something that i have exprerienced with Vanguard and I am thankful for

Most of the money the get is from : FOMO garbage, i mean secret lairs and UB, and collector booster boxes. Because the only format, besides commander, that is striving is Pioneer. And in Pioneer, we don't change more than a couple cards per format ( spqce between set releases).

@@EpicMTGMusic touche the that is accurate is a gross understatement of a lifetime and believe me I wish I could say otherwise but at the end of the day formats like modern legacy vintage those formats are now dead because they banned cards from those formats even though they will literally print cards that are on the reserve list and sure like you can make an argument that magic the gathering is gotten better because of that sure but at the end of the f****** day why do people invest in a company that only cares to line their own pockets when the player base has openly said to company owners we don't want it this way and you are going and breaking that pseudo contractual obligation

I think Flesh and Blood might push MTG aside. It is easier to learn, and younger gamers are getting into it more. LOTR is coming out a little to late. But is still worth playing for sure. I'm waiting on my MTG LOTR boxes. Will be doing a give away video when I get them.

As a Weiss Schwarz player, I completely understand your reasoning for putting the game in C tier. There is definitely a stigma in the NA market that you just buy product to grab the chase cards and offload the rest for pennies on the dollar after certain MTG Finance individuals started trying to push it as an "investment". Personally, I would put the game in the B-Tier slot as an enfranchised player. Some pros for the game would be the gameplay loop is engaging without being overly complex (there isn't really a "stack") and playsets for entire sets can are extremely affordable compared to other CCGs, while the biggest cons are that the game has inherent RNG that can only be mitigated, and the competitive meta is basically split into 3 categories for sets: Should not win games, Can win games, and Should win games.
@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames Год назад
Awesome thoughts, thanks so much for sharing them! I admit that my Weiss experience is fairly out of date as well. I do have to get back a play another game with more modern decks at some point. But there's one thing for sure that Weiss is top at: collectible cards that people want to chase! So many games have started emulating what they do now!
@jayjaydeth
@jayjaydeth Год назад
I think I agree with the MtG placement if only because even if the game died tomorrow, people would still be playing it 20 years from now. And there are very few TCGs that someone can make that claim about. Because, most people aren't playing Standard, the "main" format. When it comes to competitive I think the most popular format is Pioneer right now. And then for casual it's all Commander, so they shoot themselves in the foot by trying to catter to the Commander format with every set and Standard just becomes more and more of a joke. It's a vicious cycle. And then you got Hasbro's stock dropping like a rock and MtG is supposed to be there biggest source of income (don't quote me on that) as far as individual IPs go. That's probably not a good sign. And I know this was recorded before $250k (estimated) worth of Magic cards were found in a landfill, but there's that as well.
@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames Год назад
Magic certainly is in a complicated place right now, but your reasoning is exactly what was going through my mind. Of all the games on this list, MTG is the only one that would take a century to die out after being discontinued. No matter what harm Hasbro/Wizards might do to the game, it's always a safe bet for playability. So many people - myself included - still love the game itself, so even if it's in a rough patch right now it just didn't feel right putting it any lower than at the top. The two games in the top tier are really in there for very different reasons!
@jameslockwood8840

Absolutely agree with the rankings. Flesh and Blood is absolutely S tier considering the support both it's players and developers give it, with amazing gameplay. FFTCG, despite how long I've been supporting the game and running a community, will never achieve that status because SE treats it like cheap merch and nothing else. It's a real shame but 6 years in, it's still an absolute struggle to get OP or even just monthly promos to TO's and stores. A very bias take from me (TO/Store Owner), but Bandai/Konami games just seem to have the most toxic players (for some reason I don't understand), which isn't a flaw to the game itself but I always have a hard time recommending it to new tcg players because of that. That all being said, our area is ridiculously hyped for Grand Archive, and Wots certainly looks like they are ready to help us get the game moving successfully, so I easily see it as A tier moving into S tier after a year or 2.

I play FaB, Magic, and MHA currently and I used to play Pokemon and Yugioh, all at a high level but not pro. FaB is my favorite game because I like the champion style gameplay and each deck and character feels unique and powerful to play with and against. I agree with your placing of these games except I would argue that Pokemon should go down to B tier because when I played, I felt like each of my decks would hit a hard ceiling at some point and there just was no room for growth. So while the game is great to start playing, having a game get to the point where you say "well I've done everything; I'm satisfied" is not a great feeling

I like your list! I'll have to give Universes another shot. I honestly would prefer it as with the fighting game IP's, but I like MHA. I think why I didn't continue it when I first played a local was that I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of skills for my first time playing. But honestly it seems pretty tight, the company that runs it is great, and it has a ton of potential

Not bad list, currently playing super and very enjoyable, and agree on most points, would put it low A-Tier in font of MHA for some of the same reason MTG is S-tier and have the longer lifespan of everything in front of it to come out in the last few years . Just some Decisions Bandai been making questionable and the competitive side is not the best it could be, but the outlook for next year looks good and will garner new interest as the series returns next year, overall one day it can be relative to MTG were as magic Simply Being DBS and the pros with it, outweighs its flaws, but on that dbs has been the quickest game I've ever been in to course correct when there is issues.
@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames Год назад
Yes, I think the line between the tiers isn't really that sharp and often comes down to personal opinion. DBS's greatest pro is that the Dragon Ball fanbase is rabid, and we are finally getting rumblings of Super returning to TV so there's no reason Bandai would quit printing the cards. Sometimes that's not necessarily a pro - when developers decide to just lean into collectability and the gameplay stagnates - but I always give Bandai huge credit for their interesting mechanics they develop for DBS so I have no doubt it'll be around for a while. I always appreciate your comments! :)

Final Fantasy should be an A for being the best TCG available in terms of mechanics and deckbuilding. One Piece has it's awesome Don!! system, MtG has sheer variety of mechanics, but FFTCG stands out as the best overall game to play. There's much original artwork in the game now, which was a big complaint upon release. Promos and rare cards are handled a lot better now too. The game also retained its playerbase (tournament attendance numbers wise) through Covid, though it seems in some areas the game isn't represented at all - overall I'd say its doing well and has one of the friendliest gaming communities out there. Square's almost criminal lack of marketing and lack of good tournament/prize support remains a big issue that holds the game back and stops it being an S tier game.

I agree with most of these from an overall standpoint (like I don't enjoy playing MtG at all, but obviously it's not going anywhere, for example). I also dig Super Show, but you're not even wrong. It looks like garbage, it's super random, and it's too expensive for what it is. Also the community seems bad, judging by these comments :p Another that's been around for a bit is Genesis, I'm curious where it would end up. Probably mid/high C for me
@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames Год назад
Oh Genesis! That's totally my fault, I DID miss that one. If I had remembered to include it, I feel like I agree with C tier for it - it's a game that's been around a while, looks sharp, and is quite unique among TCGs, but while the KS did well this past year, I'm not sure it had the overall "move the needle" impact that it really could have used to get the game to be easier to find players for. That's another issue I feel has to be weighed in the discussion, and another reason Super Show and others are where they are. No reason you can't enjoy those games, of course - but unless we're going to give everything an A for effort and make the most boring Tier list ever, something's gotta be in the lower tiers so we have to find some way to delineate them. Thanks so much for your comment! I can't believe I forgot Genesis!

I think Final Fantasy TCGs biggest problem is it's a reused art asset game. While some of those games are doing okay, original art really does propel a game forward. IT is marketing to have wonderful pieces of art in your game. Digimon gets to share new art of tons of things that you might have cared about as a kid and if you don't like digimon a really cool dragon maybe will drab you or a very pretty woman or boy could grab you. A big reason the big three TCGs are there is all three produce tons of original art and the art alone can bring in players or at least collectors, casual fans.

As a former Vanguard player, I'll have to say it's really depressing what happened to the game since its inception. I first started playing when it came out, and it was on a steady increase in popularity. Personally, my favorite Era was the G Era, but most of my friends would say breakrides. The real problem for me was when they started rebooting their game, then poorly attempting to make other formats out of the older cards, but they barely support those formats so the Premium meta languished for quite a while. So we decided to play the new standard format, which was alright for a while, but all the Premium format cards we had just kinda became useless as all the tournaments you could find were for Standard. THEN they decided to reboot the game again, and that made a new Standard format, and created a format between Premium and Standard called V-Premium. That was the last straw for me as everything I loved about the game was abandoned, and I couldn't take my favorite decks to tournaments anymore.

The biggest issue I had with FAB was that I didn't enjoy the arc of the game - FAB plays as a brawl where characters start at full power and lose power over time. I prefer games where both players naturally build up to a climax (most TCGs). I've heard a hundred times that there's one specific class (Mechanist) in FAB that does that, but that would just shoehorn me into a specific deck when I'd really be looking for a whole system to explore and enjoy. But it's all good, not every game is for everyone! I respect FAB's system and players, I just didn't find it as much fun to play as *other* 1v1 brawler TCGs.

@@MaindeckGames I completely agree with you. I think that because you lose strength over the turns, the game just becomes about making your opponent fizzle out sooner. I find myself conflicted about the game. I think the best way to play the game is Commoner or Blitz, since games will not last as long. People keep telling me that the real game is in Classic Constructed, but I feel like that would just exacerbate the feeling of losing strength. I'm going to continue to give it a chance, but I'm definitely not spending the insane money people do on FaB.

the main issue i have with your list is your reason for ranking Yugioh down because konami isn't that great frankly you don't apply that logic to WotC who are objectively worse, not justifying some of the practices konami has but it's a little bit biased
@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames Год назад
No worries! We all have our opinions. You mentioned it's a bit biased - yep, any tier list is going to be in some way! That said, I do want to point out a couple of things that do shape my opinion on the two - first, this list was done in early November 2022, which was before many of the recent negative press events for WotC. I'm sure I'll weigh those in more in this year's list! Second, I think my point about Konami's business practices probably wasn't super well fleshed out in this livestream, but the difference between the two is that often Konami's practices with banlist management and power creep (my main issues) have a direct impact on how the game plays, while the negative press events for WotC may reflect poorly on the company, but I don't think they impact the game to the same degree. If I was ranking COMPANIES in a vacuum, you'd probably be much more on the same page as me with their rankings! But this was about the game itself, and while it's hard to divorce how Konami manages the game from its gameplay, it's easier to divorce some of WotC's recent decisions from how the game plays in general because they didn't really impact it. Konami also has a longer track record of those practices, whereas WotC has been spiralling a bit faster lately - and as I said, the deepest spiralling has been in the last 6 months, after this video was made! Appreciate your thoughts though!

I would have based them off of popularity, then cost, then prize support for sanctioned events. Mtg, pokemon, and yugioh are all instantly top spots off of that criteria,but that is just my opinion. I know people who hate yugioh cause it is too complex, and i know people who hate pokemon because it isn't complex enough. Mtg forcing you to stay up to date in standard format as well as pokemon kinda svcks, but magic is the worst about forcing you to buy a new deck every 3 months for standard.

Oh my, Force of Will still exists and is being played. Still some minor issues with the game but the card quality and stock is superb. Lockdowns hurt it the most. It fixes MtG flaws and makes for a much more involving game. It deserves at least a 'C' or possibly a 'B'.

Thanks for your thoughts! FoW in my experience is game that tends to be very regional at this point - I think it's the case that if you are in a region where a solid group is together, the game is quite a bit easier to get into and play! I definitely agree that the card quality is great in FoW - though I'll contend that "MTG's flaws" is a very subjective opinion. Solid game for sure either way, so I'm glad you are still loving it!

I've talked about it in more length in some podcasts - but to give you the most brief version of the reasons, 1) I wasn't a huge fan of the game *usually* operating on a "start strong and lose power" arc rather than many games which use an escalating power arc (where you gain power or resource potential as the game progresses, and 2) I found the moment-to-moment decisions not particularly exciting and felt other games (like UniVersus/MHA) scratched a similar itch but were more satisfying to my taste.

@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames 10 месяцев назад
The way I approach a tierlist like this is not just giving my personal taste opinion on the gameplay. My goal was to approach the entire industry and try to rank games as *objectively* as possible. In other words, the question I wanted to try to answer was: if you are looking at getting into a TCG, which game should YOU play? That meant thinking about more factors than just "did *I* enjoy the gameplay". It meant considering how good the organized play support is, how good the casual play is, how expensive is the game to keep up with, how easy is it to find players, how good are the decisions the company makes for the longterm health of the game, etc. If you consider a list like that fake, then yes, it's a totally fake list. Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoyed my fake list!

Only thing I dont agree with is FaB, as a player. Who has placed well in larger events. I think Arcane damage is a huge flaw to the systems fo the game. I would put it a like an A. It's a mechanic that punishes those who don't use it themselves, and people who do use it benefit at a larger way. Having to gimp yourself 2-3 equipment slots to try and negate arcane, also gimps your ability to push a game through. Also don't get me started on Oldhim fatigue strats.

Magic is a great game and a shit product imo. Gameplay is great (mana flood/screw sucks but thats just card luck tbh) but Hasbro/WotC knows that "well its magic! People will buy it!" and stopped caring about players. And it's 100% the suits fault, if you look at the cards themselves, minus a few over-pushed cards *cough* Oko *cough* you can see the love for the game. But as a product every move made is anti consumer and it sucks. It sucks buying a $45 commander deck knowing full well that its low quality card stock and undeniably a worse PRODUCT than something like a Wixoss starter deck or literally ANYTHING Pushed out by Pokemon. MtG has been coasting on its laurels for years, and sure it can coast for years, but its a shell of its former self in a lot of ways
@MaindeckGames
@MaindeckGames Год назад
I think that's a totally fair take! My 2c - I don't consider (many of) Magic's decisions to be as much "anti-consumer" as they are simply "not pro-player". Magic has a MASSIVE fan base - with a variety of interests in how they interact with the game - and because of that, they've made a lot of decisions especially recently that I think you and I both agree on being not helpful to the rank-and-file PLAYERS of the game. But I think the majority of them aren't actively harming the players other than their inability to reasonably participate in them (ex: *most* 30th Anniversary items). This vid was made before the impact of the 30th anniversary stuff - and my take would be slightly lower, perhaps, now. I think WotC/Hasbro needs to figure out how to right the ship, but because of how big the game is, they have time to do it. What's very difficult to excuse is why it hasn't happened yet, given the resources they have! And agreed 100% - Wixoss's recent all-foil starter puts starter decks for every other game to shame!
@Sadarac152
@Sadarac152 Год назад
@@MaindeckGames I get what you mean. I approach games from the perspective of a player who frequents my LGS and maybe would attend tournaments (if there were ones I could viably attend *cough cough*) but for kitchen table players and collectors things are maybe a little better. I think part of the reason commander is getting so popular (aside from the heavy marketing push) is that it is a non-rotating format that can be very social. While Pre-cons could be better as a product but they ARE very accessible and once you've started commander its very easy to "pay as you go" with card swaps here or there or slowly collecting cards for a new deck when some cool $3 legend comes out of a new set.

@@Sadarac152 Definitely the clincher, but also I don't believe Exodus has ever been in distribution and has remained a wholesale direct to retailer seller, which kind of opens a can of worms if I allow it (even if it is likely one of the bigger, if not the biggest, TCG with that business model). For the fans, I hope they are able to pick it back up soon, though!

As much as I love yugioh (the only card game I currently play), it does have many flaws. Flaws created by Konami. It has outrageous power creep and college level English. Although I'm not bothered by the text box that was mentioned. It is fairly small but it use to be smaller and back then yugioh cards didn't have so many effects. As for Pokemon I find the gameplay boring. It's too simplistic with simplistic battling and the amount of cards you can run through is ridiculous. Even yugioh has it limits to drawing cards. The game was made for kids but it has not grown up with it's audience like yugioh has. At least one thing Konami has gotten right.

My very limited view from Germany, here MTG , YGO and Pokemon are the strong ones. MTG has with Commander a strong casual mutliplayer Format, which it's strongest point in my opinion. YGO has its broken System w/o resources, which plays very different. Yeah readability is bad, but ngl, GateRuler FoW and many others japanese TCGs cards are also incredible hard to read quickly due to their design. Flesh and Blook is definitly going strong, but I really dislike the gameplay, not fun to watch or play in my case. We'll see if it can stand its ground, because I feel like it's more like an anti mtg reaction more than anything else. Pokemon and Digimon is mainly for collecting imo. For the remaining ones Germany is just too small not dense enough to support most of them in my opinion. This was also my Problem and the reason I only collect MTG Commander and YGO at the moment and sold off FoW, GateRuler, WIXOSS, Vanguard and Digimon.
