I like this conductor! He sure knows how to get the orchestra to convey the message he pulls out of this piece! He also seems to know the score pretty well, so he can communicate better with the musicians.
I completely agree that it sounds right... the tendency to slow down tempi for the benefit of -questionably- luscious orchestral sound is modern... and came mostly with early and later 20th century self indulgent or even genius german conductors, who were too proud of their orchestras... I tend to really dislike slow tempi. They usually favour sound at the cost of music. In nineteenth century this would have been rather slow... ;-)
I'm sorry. I am a tubist with a california orchestra and we just rehersed this symphony last night. This movement was difficult for me to feel. What I mean is....it is easy to feel if you close your eyes and listen...but when watching the conducting it....it was hard to "get". However this conductor looks a thousand times more difficult to follow. He looks like he is swimming actually!
Sorry to disagree but this conductor is a genius!! His style certainly makes a change from the hyperactive, meaningless gestures that as musicians we get used to seeing.
You know your fellow players first , basics , i noticed it wos a california orchestra , obviously , mmm not the Philharmonic then , obviously not a professional I do have to say ,as a Tuba player oh yes occasionally you might be needed within the orchestral world , me trumpet, classically trained R C M , I like to think ,I can get any conductors vision in any peace i play. You watch , listen and learn .
I see that "MariaCallas" and I couldn't DISAGREE MORE: for me, one needs to be able to "take things as SLOW as you dare." Also, DEATH TO any and ALL "political correctness" anywhere!!! If somebody can do something really convincingly at a slower tempo, why not??? This 2nd movement really gets only 2/5 from me - it's as if he wants to get it over with... [And most certainly the middle section needs to be slower than the rest!!]

Sorry folks, but this "light and fluffy" rendition of the Pathetique just doesn't do it for me. It's fantastic music, but the way it is played here, i just don't feel emotionally involved at all.... instead i feel like i'm trapped in a B-grade Disney flick, with innocuous little beasties dancing around in a forest clearing.... shudder!!
