Naah, LCD is LCD. Period. It's bright. It's backlit. And it is NOT e paper. At all. This is a scam. They made a generic, mediocre LCD tablet with a generic stylus, slapped a matt protector on the screen and found a cunning way to market it. Every phone, every tablet has a built in reading mode and a bluelight filter. 10 year old tablets have it. That's not anything new. You can also buy matt protectors. It's sad that this video is glamorizing this product instead of shitting on it.
If you want sunlight readability while also being able to watch videos the Eyemoo S1 is really great. I love my BOOX Nova Air C but for browsing the Eyemoo wins.
@@lukastux3024 ePaper (not eInk) is a rather loosely used term that I usually saw for LCD technology so for me it's the same. What TCL calls ePaper is a normal LCD where they reduced reflections it seems. Real eInks biggest difference is that it's pretty slow
So it's an IPS LCD tablet that has a grayscale mode... amazing.... But OK, the screen blocking that much light is sure nice - but could you please test it under real sunlight conditions? Can you actually use this in bright daylight? Because that is what I expect from anything calling itself "e-paper" or "e-ink".
This was by far the best review I've seen for a device. You focused on the key aspects for what it's trying to be first THEN reviewed the other tablet aspects. I'm looking to get this specifically to read Manga, Graphic Novels and Light Novels so seeing you cover these examples was so appreciated! Awesome review!!
The reading experience looks quite nice for an LCD, and honestly I think I'd very much prefer this to an iPad. And considering at it's current price point of $239 it's even cheaper than picking up a discounted last gen iPad, plus comes bundled with the pen, seems like a solid deal if one isn't specifically looking for e-ink.
Agree! After watching e-ink development for a couple years, I pulled the trigger on this device. With the money I saved I can justify replacing this with an actual e-ink tablet in a couple years when that technology may be ready for prime time.
If you're using an iPad for reading, why limit yourself to a last gen model? Especially considering ipads get supported for multiple years. You could even get a refurbished mini 4th gen for under $230. I saw an Air 2 for under $150(Best Buy US prices).
I own another model by TCL with the same screen, NXTPAPER 12 PRO, and I can assure you the readability is more than good. It's by no means compared to e-ink, but you can clearly see everything in the room full of windows when it's sunny outside.
just got it with a black friday lightning deal on amazon for 180. Also own a nova 3, and a note air 2 plus and so far I really like it. Sometimes you just get tired of how limited a epaper device is.
Cool! I'm very interested, but I'm worried that it really is an LCD with background lighting and not feeling like a genuine e-ink. Have you used real e-paper before and can compare the two technologies?
Do you use it for taking notes? Is it good? Does the pen lag or something? I heard from someone that videos over 450p quality glitching is it the same for you too?
The issue for me is I don't get any benefit of sunlight readability. It looks great in moderately lit environments but outside it will either be unreadable or chew through battery in no time.
I bought it. Personally I really like it. I was sceptical from all the videos so I just went to store, tested it there and liked what I've seen. THIS IS NOT AN EBOOK READER - if you're expecting that you might be very disappointed, what this is, it's a TABLET first with very special screen adjusted for reading, if it wasn't obvious enough from all the video reviews. It's a screen with milky soft matte colors and light that goes easy on your eyes, so it's more enjoyable for reading than rest of the tablet lcd screens, but at the end of the day it's still a tablet and not an e-ink. It's especially great if you're a comic books fan, if you're that I would say go for it, but as for standard books, don't rush into it. Just because I like it, might not be the case for everyone, so if you're reading this and were like me, going over dozen of RU-vid videos to see should you threw your money into this.. I really suggest you find a way to look at it first in the store on something. I like it but it's not for everyone.
This could actually be a good replacement for my Boox reader. It's still working ok for the most part, but it's showing it's age. I'd like some color sometimes. Comics are not as fun without color :)
I'm not convinced yet. I am looking at an e-reader for the ease on my eyes, weight, and paper feel with the ability to make notes, E-ink still feels like the right way to go, e-colour is catching up IMO, an excellent review.
Can you tell me if this is different than having a matte screen protector on an iPad? I genuinely didn’t understand the differences between this and normal LCD tablets with say a matte screen protector
Wow, I'm glad that I stumbled up this tablet. I just bought a Kindle Scribe. I am going to return it as I have a smaller Kindle Paperwhite. This TCL Nxtpaper 11 will serve me better.
Looks pretty interesting. I'll start my masters in 2 weeks and I think this TCL will be good to read books with colorful charts and of course it has a great advantage of taking care of our eyes during loooong coursework ✌
I am interested in buying one of these for digital art also, my concern is the fact that it has only 4gb of ram and I don't know if that will be enough.
Despite the misleading title of "epaper", I bought the nxtpaper 11 two days ago and I love it. The eye comfort mode and reading mode makes this tablet a really affordable ereader (200 euros in my local shop). I mainly read art books so I really like the colour without experiencing eye strain. Waiting for the pen to arrive today. Yes I love iPads and e-readers (I had an onyx boox max 2 in the past), but this nxtpaper 11 feels right for me. I think it should be considered seriously and not dismissed straight away. In my opinion the manufacturer have made an effort to make the screen comfortable, it's not just an LCD tablet with a Matt screen protector slapped on it. Perhaps TCL will consider renaming the product and this tablet should be considered for its own merits. It may not appeal to everyone but this tablet offers me some benefits that neither an iPad pro or an e-reader can offer. In addition the lower price tag makes it an attractive option.
i have a dual display watch from mobvoi, and am wondering when will we get something similar for the epaper scene? LCD could light up only for adding color, light or fast contents, but when in epaper mode, the display now sips battery juice.
Thanks for the review. I feel disappointed (like other commentators) as I'd hoped it was a direct competitor to eink entering the market. Sadly not. Seems a decent tablet though, but not suited to my needs. Looks like I'll be buying the Kindle Scribe after all :)
Hey, nice video! Just a couple of questions I would like to ask: - is this a reflective LCD screen? - how is visibility outdoors under direct sunlight? - does it have backlight or frontlight? - is it visible outdoors having back/front light set to zero? Thanks!
It’s definitely more compelling than I was expecting. I hope we see Apple and the rest of the tablet makers doing similar things. And presumably there’s no reason why they couldn’t do the same with other types of devices.
It just really seems like a normal tablet with a mattish screen protector on it. On my eReaders I always like to invert the Black and white to be even easier on my eyes because my eyes are super sensitive after having cataract surgery on both my eyes.
Hello! I may have missed it, but sounds like one would need to buy the stylus separately. Do you know where that can be purchased? I couldn't find it in the TCL store site, and doing a search brings up a lot of different options, which seems weird, as the reviews suggest there is only one pen that is compatible. Thank you! Great review overall.
I bought this a few weeks ago, must say I'm pretty happy overall. I never got the pen bundled with though, any chance you can drop some links on to places to buy the t-pen separately, and some close-up shots of it? I'm currently using an old Jot Dash 2 which kinda works, but it's not great.
How's your experience so far? I've read some concerning reviews when it comes to RU-vid video watching, for example. And did you find any accesories? I cannot find the pen or the case anywhere (Europe)
I don't know, man. When I buy an e-reader, I want something I can use while lying on the beach in bright sunlight to read my book. Anything LCD-based probably just won't work.
It's getting really annoying to see that we are going into 2024 and we are still getting premium tablets from name brand companies who are still not giving their premium tablets support for full HD on media apps🤦🏾♂️
I do like the idea of a matte screen to reduce glare. That could be good for capturing drone footage since being outside lends itself to a lot of reflections showing up on most screens. However, this TCL NXTPAPER is too big to use with a drone controller.
It seems like a really great device but by calling epaper I feel like they're trying to pull a fast one on the uninitiated. Feels like a marketing error on seemingly good tech.

I'm becoming an addict to EInk devices 😅 so I wouldn't buy this one at the moment, but nice tablet anyway
this is quite good, but too distracting for an e-reader. isn't the purpose of an e-reader to read and read alone? the other apps are quite disturbing if I may say so.
I think youre confusing e-ink and e-paper. Or conflating the two. I don't believe it's been advertised as e-ink. Also as I understand it the effect is a multi layer situation, not solely the coating on the screen.
I hate to be a downer, but it's not e-paper...its just a matte display, it's not revolutionary, monitors and laptops have been doing this for 20+ years, TCL just had the idea to slap one on a tablet and phone
