Hey Adam, just found you recently and am catching up. I used to live down around the Sunset and Hollywood Blvd intersection, east of the touristy part of Hollywood. In those days, I was a runner, and would run from home up to Griffith Observatory along the dirt trails, and then continue on up to the mountain above and behind the observatory. One day, I decided to strike out west from the observatory to find the Hollywood sign by running along the ridges between the "peaks" of that mountain range. I had no water! It's nothing but deer trails up there; no established hiking trails at all, but I eventually made it. The building in your video is just as I remember it, but when I got there, someone had slipped-up: the 12' high chain link fence gate was *open*, and not seeing any signs saying I shouldn't, I walked on in, looking for a water faucet or something. As I walked toward the building, I noticed a CCTV camera following me, and then a voice from a speaker said, "What do you want?" I wasn't sure if they could hear me, but I said, "I'd like a drink of water." The voice said, "You can try the faucet by the door (of the building)." I went up to it, turned the spigot, but nothing came out. I looked up at the camera, shrugged, headed for the gate, and walked out. As I was walking back down to where the deer trail met this facility's driveway, I looked back and saw the gate slowly closing by itself. It was motorized. Back then, I was a tough little SOB and it wasn't really that hard to make it back to the observatory where they had drinking fountains all over the place. Thought you'd enjoy the story.
Oh Wow !!! That was so cool !!! I've always wanted to do that . I never knew you couldn't drive straight up to the Hollywood sign . Thanks for sharing that information . This is why I love these blogs.. seen this sign so many times in films and now I got a personal video of it,nothing is better than that for a guy who lives 10 000 or more from this icon... According to the Little Golden Book I read as a 4 year old in 1965 it is SMOKEY THE BEAR, the US Forest Service marketing campaign that came out in the 1990s changed it to drop the middle part from his original name. Evidently they are free to change his name at the whim of heartless marketing firms. Smokey the Bear it will always be, in spite of the cruel revisionism of modern day advertising campaigns. If you think otherwise consider yourself a victim of the heartless advertisers.

Instead of drinking Gatorade you should make yourself daily pitchers of fresh lemon-lime aid and carry it with you to drink. Unlike plain water it will not make you feel sick to your stomach when you are out on these long hikes on hot days. Lemon and limes are high in potassium and magnesium and other minerals that the body needs to function properly especially before, during, and after intense exercise.

Wow didn't know you could walk up there. I was down a lot lower and got a picture in front of the sign which is above the ball park and dog park. Pretty cool from there too. Will have to check these trails out next time I'm in LA. Thanks Adam. Oh by the way Bonnie and Clyde movie was just on History channel not sure why but it was. Saw your video the other day on them. By the way that plant looked a lot a Plumaria my mom use to have them. There really nice plants but not sure if that is one or not.

Hey man, You ever thought about getting a scooter? It might save you uber money and they don't use much gas. You could cruise all over LA or wherever you go. I'm sure that there's a rear rack you could get for Large Marge. A gas scooter would be cool. John

Wow, that was quite a daunting hike. Definitely would have pulled a Clark Griswold at the Grand Canyon as soon as we saw that trail on the other side of the canyon.
That was quite the hike. It seemed so much easier in GTA5. I saw your gatorade almost empty all the way back at the message tree. Shame you can't fill them up with water anywhere along the trail.

Interesting but gruesome fact that began at the Hollywood(land) sign. Peg Enthwisle. We all know she committed suicide from the "H" in the sign. The reason security is so tight there now. But did you know she was Brian Keith's step-mother? Years later his daughter, Daisy, committed suicide and not too long after that Brian Keith did the same thing. Talk about a family legacy! I'm not usually bothered by a lot, but this story gets me every time I even think about it!
