Let the Columbo like research skills begin . If anyone can match up specific gunsmoke episodes to the location shown I'd really like to know the season and episode number .

Old Westerns will always remind me of my dear grandfather who absolutely adored the genre and would tell me stories about watching John Wayne flicks on a small TV in Cuba. Until the day he passed there wasn't a single time you could hand him the remote and not end up watching a Western. Fond memories.

I still watch the old re-runs of Gunsmoke and Have Gun will Travel on tv. Love it. Loved the Lone Ranger with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels when I was a kid and still do. There's just not much on present day tv that appeals to me anymore. I think much of the idea we have of the old west was created by Hollywood.

Adam , you find some of the most interesting things . I love when you go to the abandoned film sets .I didn't watch too many Gun Smoke Shows , but I remember my grandfather , my dad , and my husband watching it pretty often . I remember my dad's favorite saying was , ( get out of Dodge ) . lol !! That's cool that you found the built where Clint Eastwood played in the movie Josey Wales. My dad looked so much like him . Right after my dad passed away in 1979 . I was at my grandparents house and I saw a newspaper on the kitchen table with a picture of Clint Eastwood in it , but I thought it was a picture of my dad . My mom said , no honey that's not your dad . Thanks for sharing Adam !

Also Adam, there was something I wanted to ask you . Have you ever been to an abandoned house down in Florida , it was a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright . I saw a blog were 2 guys went in it and it was at one time a gorgeous house . Those other 2 guys that made a blog about it said it was haunted . I started watching a few more blogs about Frank Wright . There was one vlog I found and I thought of you . The tour guide was showing one of the Frank Wright homes and right before he went in , he asked the tourist if they had ever seen the movie , Back to the Future ? He meant they were fixing to step back in time. That blog was called , Meyer S May House Real USA EP. 65 . Just in case you wanted to check it out . If or when you go back to FL. I wish you would go to that abandoned house . I really think you would do a better job at making it more interesting and I was thinking while I was watching the other guys do their blog . I bet if Adam made a blog about this he would do a better job . Just make sure you take someone with you . I know you don't like to step on anyone's toes , but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask . Love you Adam the Woo....!!!!

Gunsmoke filmed about 30 episodes in the Kanab area. The Johnson Canyon movie set was built in 1952 for the MGM film with Robert Taylor called "Westward the Women". It was used for many other feature films and TV shows. It was never Dodge City, but was always used for another "town" when the script called for it. In 1971 (season 17, episode 3 & 4) they filmed Waste: part 1 & 2 with guest stars Ellen Burstyn and Johnny Whitaker. Also the same year (season 17, episode 11) Drago with guest star Buddy Ebsen.

Good morning Adam, really enjoying these daily vlogs, especially when you visit abandoned places. If I may be so bold to suggest, walking around someplace like Hollywood in sneakers is fine. When you're out in the desert or up in the mountains you might consider more substantial foot ware, maybe a light weight hiking boot to protect the feet and a walking staff. The walking staff will give you balance if you're treading across something a bit sketchy or for poking at something before touching it. Have a beautiful day wherever you go, see you tomorrow. "COMMENTS OVER"

"Woodyoncp," don't get too excited because out of 630 shows over 20 years, 'Island in the Desert, Part 2' was the only one to film there, in the series' final season. And this old ghost town was called by the guest actor Ten Strike; it was never Dodge City, "Gunsmoke"'s town.

The original radio version of Gunsmoke starred William Conrad. You had to use the "Theater of the Mind" when listening to a radio show, but many of the first television shows used as their inspiration the popular shows on radio. No set but your mind was needed to create this image with William Conrad as Matt Dillon, Georgia Ellis as Miss Kitty, Parley Baer as Chester and Howard McNear as Doc Adams. John Mestin wrote most of the shows for both the radio and later television show. Sadly John Mestin is rarely mentioned.

I swear human beings can be the worst swine in the world. Why on EARTH would anyone want to destroy those beautiful rock totem poles? When did people stop caring and become so sick and inhuman? Destroy with no regard for the beauty, needless to say the artistic skills it took to do such lovely work. People (and I use that word loosely) who destroy are simply inhuman animals.

Animals get such a bad rep...always being compared to destructive, greedy humans. We need a new word to indicate human behavior that is the lowest of the low...rather than insulting the animal kingdom. Animals don't destroy their home, or take more than they need for survival...they are in harmony with nature. Yet we denigrate them without thinking, out of habit. Maybe we can come up with a more accurate adjective to describe sub-human behavior. We are surrounded by such a vast number of these types of "people" that it should give us enough inspiration to come up with a more appropriate title .

7:22 - I believe, upon further inspection of this photo, this is Doc's Office and the stairs leading up to his Office. I love the show Gunsmoke. It has everything a good television show should have. At times, it is extremely funny!! All in all, it was meant to be Dramatic. The first season is the only season I know of where the exteriors of Dodge City were filmed on location. After the first season was finished filming, all Dodge City exteriors from that point on where filmed on a sound stage.

I was at the Kanab Movie Ranch back in the 1970s when it was still a functioning movie ranch, before Best Friend Animal Sanctuary was there.. There were about 20 different numbered locations, you drove from one to the next.. Josie Wales hadn't happened yet. Mackenna's Gold had filmed there 2 or 3 years earlier. Stayed at Parry Lodge in town, a great historic hotel. Kanab was a great little town back then. Like everywhere else they've destroyed it, couldn't wait to get out the last time I was there, the traffic, the congestion. Further east was Paria Canyon where they built a little town when the Rat Pack made Sergeants 3 there. I went there too, it was about 10 miles down a dirt road. Vandals burned it down eventually and then they rebuilt it and a flash flood wiped it out again. I think there's nothing there now..

Loved the guns he wore in that movie, the 1847 Walker .44. Not meant to be worn like that as they weigh almost 5 pounds each. They were made to be worn in a holster on a horse. They came in a pair and only 1,000 were ever made. Col. Walker was killed before he ever got to fire his. This is the gun that saved Sam Colt's company. The ones Clint wore in the movie for most of the film were made of rubber. A lot one can look up and read about that fine handgun. The official handgun of the state of Texas. And it was the most powerful handgun made until Smith & Wesson came out the the .357 Magnum in 1935.

I thought you might appreciate a little additional information regarding the movie set on Johnson Canyon Rd outside Kanab Utah. We're no experts on the subject & may be misinformed but the way we understand it the movie set was built for the 1951 movie "Westward the Women" with Rod Taylor. It was used for numerous other movies including 1958 "Fort Dobbs" with Clint Walker & 1962 "Sergeants 3" with the "Rat Pack". By the time "Gunsmoke" started using it for location filming the movie set was already a wreck & was often used as a ghost town. It appears numerous times in different Gunsmoke episodes, our favorite 1974 "Island in the Desert" featuring Festus & Strother Martin. In Part 2 that ends up in a ghost town we believe was this Johnson Canyon movie set. We don't believe it was ever used as "Dodge ", that we're guessing was a movie set in Hollywood. Figuring this movie set was over 20 years old when Gunsmoke was filmed there it seems apparent it would make for a good ghost town. If you see any ghost town in any western look for the red rock buttes off in the distance & the farm land around it, chances are its Johnson Canyon. Again this is what we have learned & apologize for any wrong info - Esther & Glenn

What boggles the mind is the fact that so many Filming locations and set get abandoned and just left behind. Like the M*A*S*H* filming site. Where they left vehicles and stuff. There was also an Island or something that they just left everything there. Great VLOG and Excellent scenery.

I imagine that the Utah locations were used in Gunsmoke for locations outside of Dodge City or when they needed a set that wasn't usually seen. When the show became more popular the budget was probably expanded so they could afford to shoot on location. you can always tell when a tv show is on location vs a set because of the lighting. On location is always brighter and sunnier.

Kanab Utah is a beautiful place. I'm glad you got the check out Johnson Ranch before there's nothing left. Looks like the cows are on vacation. Side Note - If you're coming through Nevada you may want to check out Tom Devlins Monster Museum in Boulder City.

Anything to do with Clint Eastwood grabs my attention. Very cool to actually see structures that were used in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" movie. Thanks Adam. Of course I watched Gun Smoke, The rifleman, probably just about all of them, except the "Dude Ranger" lol Thanks again, Tom-WV

Some of those were filmed in the Lake Tahoe area on the East side of the lake. The upstairs scenes where shot in a studio as the rooms were too small for camera gear.
