James Arness Truly Hated Him 

I knew Jim Arness through Buck Taylor (Newly O'Brien on Gunsmoke). This video is total BullS**t. Jim Arness was exceptionally humble and low key. I don't think that he could hate anyone. He was as they say a 'Gentle Giant'. If I were in charge of Jim Arness's Estate, I would sue the creator of this video and RU-vid for libel for publishing this.

The comedy between Doc and Festus was the best part of the show,for me.

Today is 11/29/2023 how ironic is it that I am waiting for Gunsmoke to come on. A great family western show. My parents loved the shows. I grew up in a small town and we had the only tv in the black neighborhood and the nights Gunsmoke aired the town was at our door. My mom popped 2 large dish pans of popcorn for our guests. That was the good life. I never knew our front door had a key because our doors were never locked. People respected each other and their property. Now all is gone except GUNSMOKE❤

A GREAT show like Gun Smoke deserves real human narration, not horrible freakin AI narration!

Ken Curtis, legendary “son of the Pioneers” and a truly great character actor, is also a great and kind human being. James Arness and Peter Graves, both humble and caring people, have no ill-will toward any. Period!

When I watched Gunsmoke as a kid, I never noticed how many repeated actors played non-staring role characters. Not only were the actors in staring roles great actors, but so too were the actors in the roles of non-staring characters. I do not think any of the stars on Gunsmoke hated each other. There was too much genuine chemistry between the stars.

My mother got me into Gunsmoke and many other great TV westerns growing up. I am 62 now and still watching Gunsmoke. I also have a collection of the radio shows to listen to on occasion.

I grew up watching Gunsmoke. As a senior now, I have come to have an even more heightened appreciation for its depth and fascinating stories and accurate portrayal of life in the early west. Many Western series have come and gone over the decades, but Gunsmoke, BY FAR, stands far ahead of any other. Its realistic portrayal of its various characters was solidly captivating, and the dialogs and development of andd technical logic of each story was way more superior over that of any other TV Western. The cast and development of the Gunsmoke characters were so brilliantly portrayed that as you watched the 20 year run of the series your heartstrings were pulled, you came to know Matt, Chester, Doc, Kitty, Festus, Quint, Sam, Newly and others, they came to feel like cherished old friends, the series was JUST THAT GOOD! In my decades of television viewing, I have never come across any other Western series that has moved me, captivated me, and engaged my heart and emotions like Gunsmoke. I have laughed, cried, cheered for, wanted revenge done, and lost sleep upon my bed, going over and reminiscing upon an episode that broke my heart, many times over the years, such as the one about a young man who fell in with bad company of a gang of robbers, but he managed to convince Doc to take him under his wing and teach doctoring to him, he becomes so dear to Doc that he actually wins his affections over and they become almost like father and son, working side by side tending to the sick. Sadly, the bad company the young man fell in with find out he is in Dodge, partners with doc who had been kidnapped to tend one of the gang's members who had been shot, they decide they must kill the young man because he knows too much about the gang, they find him and shoot him. Doc and Matt locate him. Doc's face, as he looks down on the dying young man who expresses in last breath his affection for Doc and gratitude for him having taken him under his wing as Doc holds his hand and the young man dies--you see Milburn Stone at his finest, tears well up in his eyes....he seems to age 10 years before our very eyes...suddenly his shoulders slump, he becomes a very old, frail doc, struggling to even get back up...Matt watches as Doc slowly stands, gazes off into space, defeated and devastated....slowly walks outside to his horse....stands with his back to Matt, reaches with difficulty for the reigns of his horse....choking back tears. Our hearts break😢as Doc gathers the failed strength he can muster to get up into the saddle as he, with trembling voice says, "a shame.....a DAMNED SHAME.....he would have become a great doctor, a skilled surgeon....the world could use more like him....." Matt watches a worn out aged Doc slowly ride off and with tears in his eyes Matt says of Doc: "You too, Doc....you too....this world could sure use a few more like YOU...." it hasn't, and doesn't GET BETTER THAN THAT!

We are in our 70's and watch Gunsmoke every day. The plots are great, and the endings are always good with a positive message. With hundreds/thousands of TV channels on cable these days, there is so much crap that TV is like a having gurgling sewer bubbling up right into the living room. Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Roy Rogers, the Cosby's, Wells Fargo, Lone Ranger, and so many other shows and films from decades ago are the only shows that make cable worth having.

I met Doc and Festus in Odessa ,Tx... during a college tour; Kitty was supposed to tour but couldnt due to illness. Nicest folks ever. I dont believe James Arness hated anyone.

I am 80.6 years old grew up listening to gun smoke on my dad's car as he would pull the car up beside the window, and we would sit by the window listen to Gunsmoke. Now later in the 50's we have a t.v. to watch and I have been watching Gumsmoke every since I can remember and just got through watching it as of 11:00 1_4_24 and will watch it again when comes back on. Yes I believe have seen about every show that's been on. But they just as fresh and new as the first time I seen them. Yet I can't say I have ever saw any hatred or animosity toward any of the actors. This is a disgrace for anyone to say anything like this Toward an Hero like James Arness, and I salute your time in the service Sir, Mr. JAMES ARNESS. all I can say be careful who you listen to. But I will continue to watch Gunsmoke as long as I can. Have a Bless Day

I been watching Gunsmoke since it came of TV in 1955 since my Dad never missed it. I still watch it every morning in reruns I never heard anyone say anything but good things about James Arness.

Love gunsmoke. Grew up watching it and still do. Thanks to technology I have 3 different channels now and can see it non stop if I want. Just awesome. James Arness was in every single episode. Not nearly every episode. If the narrator can't give proper information to the stars in the show they need to hush! Arness had an injury due to his military service but he did not hold up shooting on gunsmoke. I've been following gunsmoke and articles on it for decades and have never read anything even close to what's being said on this video. While I enjoy reading about programs from yester year, I'm disgusted at how some people tarnish the history of great shows like this one. Younger people see this and take it as true. So sad.

Best show I ever viewed. At 82 I still watch it every day. It is simple, provocative and entertaining. It produced a variety of characters with different talents and personalities. It would shock me to see anything in the next 100 years that would close to the popularity show as Gunsmoke.

James Arness was a surfer who frequently rode waves at San Onofre, near San Clemente, California. A surfing location that is now a State Park, and one of the most popular surfing reefs in Southern California. I spoke to him often, as a 16 year old, and he was very friendly to everyone. We all shared stories and laughs while we sat out in the line up at "Old Man's" a very good reef break, and a larger wave on South swells. James Arness was a big man and surfed very skillfully.

Wow the dedication those actors did to make Gunsmoke especially Jim Arness well I can imagine playing a,physical role and suffer injuries when he in the service and a brilliant combat record

I saw Curtis doing his Gunsmoke Festus character at our County Fair when I was a kid. When I watch the reruns now that I'm older (and hopefully wiser) actually were very well made shows.

I never heard who it was James Arness was supposed to have hated. I loved that show, and I loved all the characters protrayed. I don't believe there was any hate, just misleading title so one would watch this video. I still watch the show whenever I can and I;m almost 80 years old.

Nonsense. One of the reasons Gunsmoke was so successful was because of the interpersonal relationships the cast members had both on and off screen. There was no animosity between cast members.

I don't know how true it is, but I had read that the producers wanted John Wayne for the role of Matt Dillion. John Wayne turned them down but recommended an actor he knew by the name of James Arness. James Arness had been in several movies with John Wayne and had developed a friendship. John Wayne supposedly introduced the first episode of Gunsmoke and introduced us to James Arness.

I had the great fortune of meeting Milburn back in those days. I was working on a show that filmed in a sound stage near each other. I would often meet him on the parking lot. He always had something nice to say and would stop and genuinely care how things were going. He was an Actor, not a celebrity.

I grew up with westerns. I was a kid in the 1970’s but even as a child I was drawn to them.I would be outside pretending to ride off in the sunset on my horse ( stick horse which probably came from TG&Y) my six shooter was loaded with plenty of caps and my 180 lb St Bernard would sit and watch me play until it got dark. Bonanza was my show that said I also liked Big Valkey and Gunsmoke! Back when tv were three networks and we had more to watch than today with hundreds of programs. The good ol days.

Just a weird thing: One of my best friends was born and raised in LA. He was really into surfing. One day he went to some beach which for, some reason, was not supposed to not be open to the public. My buddy Dave said the beach was deserted except for one, big dude who was sitting on the beach with a surf board. He went over to talk to the guy and it was James Arness who was also surfing. A couple of years later my buddy was skiing in Aspen. It was a quiet day and when he got off the lift at the top of a run there was one guy standing there - James Arness. And my buddy, Dave, said that he approached him and Arness actually recalled them shooting the bull on the beach. Dave said he was very pleasant and utterly "normal" - not standoffish at all. AND: My buddy had a paper route in Montrose (some suburb of LA) and one of the people on his route was "Doc" who lived about two blocks from his house. I was, like, "Dave - what's with you and Gunsmoke for pete's sake???" Just some weird, Forest Gump kinda thing.....lol.

James arness was a terrific Actor and he was apparently a Amazing military man. And Accumulated many metals and accurate In the army. An apparently unfortunately dude in ridge was. The omenie distorted from. Military. And because of the bravery he'd portrayed in the military. He brought it to his character on gun smoke.

I will be 75 in 2 days, and I have been a fan of Gunsmoke from its beginning to now. I love the cast and sad that they are all gone-- except Thad and Newly O'Brien! I asked Newly, Buck Taylor, if I can email him, and he said he welcomes me and other fans to contact him! I am so glad 'Newly' is still alive! I am sad when I think about them all being gone, I guess see because I love them all. Google Buck Taylor and email him, before he is gone too!

My brothers and I loved Gunsmoke, we were lucky enough to grow up during the TV western years.

18:30 I love Gunsmoke and the characters. I started watching it with my aunt and uncle after school back in the late 50s ❤❤❤❤❤

My mother at 93 watches anything John Wayne and Gunsmoke. She doesn't hear well can't read subtitles but knows these charactors inside out. I kid my mother about Gunsmoke being good family entertainment, with multiple people being killed every show, usually Matt Dillon doing the killing. Never to early to have a beer, brawls are common, flussies at the Long Branch and any young wayward girl that comes along winds up working for Kittie. And you can believe me, they weren't giving up no free ones.

And, James was very conscious of his height over his co-stars. Several times, he stood in a depression dug beside the porches, so that his head would be close to the height of his co-stars, while they stood on the porch or steps. HIS CHOICE.

I'm 66 yrs old and I still watch this great great show, I love all the actors and actresses that played on that show, Milburn stone, Amanda Blake, Dennis weaver, Ken Curtis, and Mr James arness, this show was the best show for 20 yrs and used to watch it all the time, R.I.P. Always love to watch Gunsmoke. I still sometimes see episodes I never saw before. Loved the whole cast but always really liked Ken Curtis and his portrayal of Festus Hagan. He and Doc arguing was always funny.

This show was before my time but I'm currently obsessed with it mainly because the series is on daily on 2 networks, TV Land and INSP. Its a great series that you get lost in from another era. Its amazing the series lasted 20 years. These days a series is lucky if it goes 5 or 6 years.

Is this what we have to get used to? AI narrating? Because many words in the above narration are mispronounced! E.g., "butt-ON" for button, LOL! And same with other words. This is click-bait because James Arness (his last name is also pronounced wrong) didn't hate anyone, he worked well with everyone, and had to since he was in every single episode! Kitty (Amanda Blake) was in all but a few when Glenn Strange died in 1975 or so, but she did return for one of the movies Arness made as specials in the 1990s. And Milburn Stone (Doc Adams) was in all of the episodes also except for about 7 months when he was recovering from a heart attack. I never watched Gunsmoke when it aired, as I was in school or working, but I watch it without fail, every single day today and I still think it was the best series ever! After Chester (Dennis Weaver), i had to get used to Festus (Ken Curtis) but both played their roles very memorably. Gunsmoke was the best series ever, and its length of 20 years certainly attests to that opinion!

Had a Gunsmoke lunchbox starting in first grade in 1962. James Arness was my favorite TV star next to Chuck Connors, and I was always the tallest in my grade and HS classes, which affected my fave actor choices as a child. Topped out @ 6' 5" by age 18.

Speaking historically, Kitty Russel was not a madam. Simply because the Long Branch saloon was situated on the wrong side of the tracks. It was located on the part of town that prostitution was not legal. This being said she was a character well played by Amanda Blake and there where slight undertones that might lead a person to think she was. But who cares it was a great show, I'd rather see it than the simpsons any day.

They should bring Gunsmoke back and have Taylor Sheridan direct it. Could you imagine how awesome that would be?

2024. I still love and watch it everyday. 1:00 pm for me. When I was a kid, '60s, I never realized how much all the characters zinged each other, not to mention the sarcasm. I'm actually enjoying beyond the gunfights that I loved as a kid.

Milburn Stone originally played Live Theatre. There is a Theatre somewhere named after him.. James Arness loved to play practical jokes on set. It makes sense that they may have had to come to an understanding while Rehearsing, but to say one hated the other I think is probably inaccurate.

I never watched this show until i was older. Now am binge watching the series.

True comment - So help me God. IBM sent me to school in LA. I was housed at the Marina Del Ray Motel. One AM I saw a big guy walking along the fencing along the Yacht and Sail boat yard. I immediately recognized Arness. I put some clothes on and ran out to the gate where he went in and since it was locked I called out to him. Great guy that he was he came up out of his yacht and came to the gate to shake my hand. After we'd talked a while he told me that he was busy redoing some wood on his boat or he'd take me out sailing. So he called out to a friend and asked him to take me out on his boat. It was Doug McClure. Great day for me.

I grew up watching gun smoke in the 70s as a young kid of 7. High Chaparral, Bananaza, the Big Valley, Maverick, have gun will travel, paladin, wagon train, Raw Hide and my all time favorite The Long Ranger! Great times great shows. All great westerns.

It was hard to believe James Arness hated not being "The Thing" in the 1951 movie but accepting the part. Like the mummy, it's a bit of a mime character, had very little screen time. But his size, characteristic Gun Smoke body profile, really was the glue, carried the movie, to making it an excellent 1950s sci-fi. It's one of the best. When you think of all the CGI crap today, it's a remarkable film. I think it was said of Arness, he eventually came around to appreciate the film and part after fans kept reminding him of it. Like the Frankenstein monster, mummy, you don't get much facial recognition. But that isn't what true acting is about.

As a kid learning to fly at Van Nuys Airport, I used to clean allot of planes. Two of which he owned..a Beaver and a Beech B-55 Barron. I really liked the DHC-Beaver and he caught me sitting in it.. He didn’t get angry, just asked what I was doing, and I told him I was curious about the plane.. he just looked at me and said, “well, I guess I’d be curious too,” laughed and then patiently answered some questions I had.. I’m a retired wilderness pilot in Alaska, and one of many airplanes I flew for a living was the Beaver, mostly on skis n glaciers… see ya

The Simsons dont hold a candle to Gunsmoke the simsions is a Cartoon. The actors and stages are very great on Gunsmoke the stories are better too. I never watch the Simsons. Its silly. A childs show.

Actually, and I've heard this from various stars, Dawn Wells (Mary Ann), said, “What happened was Gunsmoke was canceled, and we were moved into their time slot. Mrs. Paley-the wife of the board chairman-had been on vacation when Gunsmoke was canceled, and when she got home, she said, ‘You can’t cancel Gunsmoke. It’s my favorite show.’ So they canceled us.”

I would say thats a lie about James Arness!! Doc said they all were great friends and thought alot of each other. He said the audience could probably see that!!! and it might have been a big part of what made Gunsmoke so popular!!! Plus many talk about James/Matt having such a good sense of humor while filming Gunmoke!!! he got along with everybody!! A joy to work with!!

My hubby is a Gunsmoke fan to this very day.....he watches it everyday/ or everytime it is on.

I remember hearing it on the radio, I didn't attend school yet.

To this day it still goes back and forth between Bonanza and Gunsmoke as to which was my favorite show of all time. With the Virginian being third right behind and the title really was click bait cuz I sure as hell didn't think that James Arness hated anyone!!!!.

There was a show that an outlaw held Doc hostage and Matt went in to rescue Doc by giving his life for Doc's. The outlaw couldn't understand that, he said Doc and Matt was crazy, stating no one would ever do that for him. So what was the meaning of this video 🤷

I did some work on his home in Newport Beach, Ca. I taught he was a kind and down to earth guy unlike a few other Hollywood stars that I worked on their homes.

My wife, that i married in 1971 just told me that she didn't watch Gun Smoke!!! I Did. Wow. Great Show.

A moment of humble humility can have lasting positive effects.

I was growing up in the late 50's and 60's. During those years where I live and still do live, we had a mind-boggling 2 channels to watch which were NBC and CBS. Later on we could get ABC if the antenna was pointed just right and the forces of nature let us get it with a 1/2 way clear picture. So, if it wasn't on NBC or CBS we didn't generally have anything to watch. There were no VCRs or even tapes to play in them when I was a kid. I think in the 70's we added one more channel to our extensive 2 channel lineup. That was FOX that came in good from a town about 40 miles away. I'm not sure how many channels were available all over the U.S. during those same years, but probably not a lot like there are now. I did like Gunsmoke as well as Guilligan's Island and watched them every week growing up.

Baloney on John Wayne considered for the role, he never wanted do a TV show, had nothing to do with his movie scheduel. That was just a rumor, dispite his introduction of the first episode saying he was cosidered, that was just done for showmanship. What is true is that he suggested James Arness for the role.
