I grew up recording music on a tascam four channel cassette recorder. I was always bouncing tracks down on to other tracks. That is why I like the SP404 because it is reminiscent of the way I started making music and it just brings out a real feeling of creativity that I don’t get often from high end tools.

Devices like this have become my go to devices for one very simple reason. Back in the 1980s when I bought my first synth, a Juno 1, I saved and wanted a synth tht did a lot of things for me. And of course back then they were big and costly. It was the same when a few years later I bought a DX7. A bit later I picked up a QY10 and a QY300 (800? I can never remember) because I wanted soemthing to sketch ideas on portably. These quickly became my most used things as I could get an idea from out of my head into the thing in minutes. And nowadays with the advent of Teenage Engeering's stuff as well as Elektron's Model Samples, I find myself using these the same way - they are fantastic to just start working on instantly. You get stuff laid down before you forget it, and can even improve things and flesh them out reasonably. They are pretty perfect workhorses, frankly.

I got a DT2 and I’m thinking about swapping it for an EP133. DT is a powerful tool but kind of feels like work. EP133 feels like fun. Maybe room for both!

The KO2 is a very easy sampler. It’s fun and a great size for travel. Have several samplers and usually lean towards MPCs. I also have an Sp404 MK2. They all are fun and have there own place and use.

Strangely, I keep thinking about the KO2. Maybe I'll have to get one after all to go with my Seqtrak. Cheaper than Digitakt2 and it collects dust just as efficiently.

not being able to play the koii sequencer as a timing/pitch guide whilst sampling is going to make timing work with sampling rather ''impossible'' thinking of bass, guitar, piano, vocals.... that needs fixing really..major workflow issue.
@MidlifeSynthesist

If they fix that and add resampling, this thing will be a force to be reckoned with

If TE ever update the KO2 to allow me to properly mess with stuff via midi it will end up an integral part of my setup. At the moment I'm just using it as a drum sampler (sequenced from a Hapax), but I can only use 1 group at a time which is damn annoying.
@MidlifeSynthesist

I’m waiting on the updates. TE have said in interviews that there is still plenty of untapped power in there, hope they deliver. Cheers!!

Hey, Since you also have/had the circuit rhythm, how to do like them both? I have the circuit rhythm and the only thing that really bothers me is the fact that patterns are limited to 32 steps and resolution is not great. Everything else seems to be better on the circuit rhythm: recording sample, resampling, probability, poly rhythm… What are your feelings?
@MidlifeSynthesist
@MidlifeSynthesist 2 месяца назад
Hey! That’s a great question! Even though they are definitely similar, they are extremely different in workflow and functions. I’d say the K.O. II is faster to work with and is easier to take to very weird territory as well as improvise live thanks to the fader, while the circuit might be deeper and easier to sequence more complex patterns. I think its worth it to try them out and see which one speaks to you more, they are both amazing machines, though I feel you can easily run into their limits as well. Thanks for watching my friend!!

Why not look at the sp 404 mk2? To me TE puts way to much focus on looks rather then usefulness and you will hit the limits of the device pretty fast and that 16 second record time with no sd card is just a shame.
@ChristopheTornieri
@ChristopheTornieri 2 месяца назад
@@TheChameleon2008 The SP 404 is clearly better in terms of features. It just feels more complex and less immediate to use. But I agree for the price that’s the best option.
@GeorgeL909
@GeorgeL909 2 месяца назад
You know what's kinda wild... you could literally buy 3 ko2s and an nts1 for the price of the digitakt mk2. I'm not necessarily saying the digitakt 2 is expensive, but it does make me wonder what you could pull off with three of these daisy chained together...
@MidlifeSynthesist

I’m hoping TE releases more of these operators, maybe a synth EP to go along with this one! Have major GAS for Digitakt mk2 though!

@MidlifeSynthesist
@MidlifeSynthesist 2 месяца назад
Hi my friend! The Fantom could do almost everything here except the punchin fx and slider fx 👍🏼👍🏼 way more poweful but I’d venture the koii is more fluid to get there🤟🏻 thanks for watching!

I'm trying to only watch videos thst won't give me GAS and given I already have a couple samplers I don't need the fancy calculator... The circuit rhythm gives me a similar fun and simple workflow while my sp404 mk2... Well, I haven't really figured what to do with it but I know it can do more if I need more than the rhythm

I'm gonna be honest with you, I have somewhat of a distrust towards RU-vidrs that get a hold on every new piece of hardware gear that hits the market. Not because they might be a sellout/ tool of the pro audio industry, not because their reviews might be biased because of it. But because I have a hard time believing that you can get anything seriously done when you're constantly switching to the latest and greatest gear that's out there. The K.O.II isn't all that easy to get a grasp of, the Digitakt 2 will be even more complex when you get your hands on it. GAS = RU-vid content but it also ruins your productivity as a musician.
@leftmono1016
@leftmono1016 2 месяца назад
So you distrust synthtubers because you don’t think they’re productive musically? Missing the point. Plus these things aren’t that hard to learn once you’ve had a few of them.
@Drrolfski
@Drrolfski 2 месяца назад
@@leftmono1016 I do actually and I've seen plenty of quite dramatic GAS confessions to support this. Plus there's a notabele difference between getting a global hang of a device based on your general experience and really getting the best out of its detailed nuances.
@MidlifeSynthesist
@MidlifeSynthesist 2 месяца назад
I completely understand and agree to a certain point with your distrust. You’re very right about youtubing getting in the way of actually making music, and I’ve come to terms with that sacrifice because this gig has allowed me to be creative outside the confines of traditional music making (as I was for many years), and go out of my comfort zone to make music in other genres as well as explore story telling through video. Take every youtubers advice with a pinch of salt. Me myself I’m just trying to have fun and have a conversation with the synth/groovebox community, I’m not interested in being the final word on the matter, just another user giving an honest opinion. Thanks for watching!
@leftmono1016
@leftmono1016 2 месяца назад
@@Drrolfski - you’re confusing synthtubers with musicians. Their main focus on here is to create content about new gear and how to use it. Not to make music. That part’s in your hands. That’s not to say some synth-tubers aren’t musicians, some are excellent, but again, that’s not the point. So, no heed to distrust them. Imho.
