Joakim is a hell of a singer, but have you heard 'You Raised me up (1 Octave Challenge)' by Tommy Johansson (Sabatons Guitarist) ? I think he a couple of knives sharper :-).

I'm very disappointed he did not admit that the military theme was inspired by older bands like Manowar and Bolt Thrower who have been doing military history themed metal since the 1980's. Not cool to not give credit where credit is due. There is no way one can be into metal and not have heard of those bands.

I could imagine that most Metal Singers just 'wing it' :) Usually the ones that actually have a proper education are known for it (Nightwish, Knorkator, Dream Theater, etc)

I have massive love and genuine respect for Sabaton. Last time I went to a show, it was to see them with my kids. Joakim pulled my kids up on stage because my son had a similar hairstyle, and he gifted my son his sunglasses. My son had a lot of social, language, and sensory disorders at the time - but the band was just super amazing to both of my kids. Loved them before that show, but I became a fan of each person afterwards.

Seen him do the same at a show in LA a few years back. Pulled a kid up on stage for the closing song, gave him his glasses. Kid tried to give them back at the end and Joakim had to tell him they were his lol.

I remember a few years back, Chicago, we found out that it was a little girl's birthday, Tommy lead HBD, Hannes threw a drumstick, Joakim threw his sunglasses, then everyone chanted her name. Some of the nicest guys I have ever met.

What’s not to love about Sabaton? The music is heavy, the lyrics tell real stories, and every interview Joakim does reinforces the fact that he is just one hell of a likable guy.

If you’ve never watch the life leave a young person as they bleed out, I suggest you stop your saber rattling. If you are so anti Russian, the Ukrainian Government is accepting volunteers to join their foreign legion defense force. Call your local Ukrainian Embassy. They will provide you with the applicable paperwork, instructions to fast track your passport, and how to arrange transportation through the Polish Embassy. So, grab a ruck and a rifle. A bit of advice. The AK on automatic walks up. It’s not like an M-4 carbine.

"I never signed up for it, and I never felt good at it." What??? Carolus Rex (the whole album) has some of the best vocals ever imo, and all of his vocals are killer!

Oh don't get me wrong he does kill it on that album, but if your paying attention you'll notice that what Joakim is singing is often relatively simple. (especially in the older stuff) Now it actually works quite well for Sabaton as it leans into that storyteller vibe they want to give off and the music is often so well written that you don't care that the vocals are a little simplistic. Plus ultimately its not about how clever you can sound and about how impressive your vocal range is etc, its about making music that is good to listen too, which Joakims voice always has been and thats always been his greatest strength as a lead vocalist.

Yep, you and I both. I can't name a single individual or publication that does better interviews at all to be honest. I think it's possible Elizabeth is the single best metal interviewer on the planet right now which is so wierd to say considering her background lol. I think it's because she doesn't do the interview from an opera perspective, she does it from a musician perspective and that makes the interviews more interesting. Other interviewers tend to come from a journalist perspective which is almost always coming from an insentivized clickbait angle. Elizabeth has integrity which is not a word I would use lightly or very often and that's probably the best kind of compliment I could give her.

My fiancée is a metalhead and loves Sabaton. He introduced me to this band, and I thought it was really cool. I told him that maybe I wouldn't have forgotten everything I learned in history if I'd been taught through the context of song. When I became pregnant, we didn't stop blaring Sabaton on the road. Once my son was born, for a those first months, one of the only things to get him to stop crying was listening to Sabaton. He must have recognized it from when he was inside. It was crazy because he would be screaming his head off, and then as soon as he heard Joakim's voice, he'd stop. At least long enough that we could distract him and do whatever we needed to do- change him, get him into the carseat, whatever. His favorites were 82nd All The Way, Bismarck, and The Red Baron. He would just stop and look toward the sound source.

Well, as Tank the Tech researched, a lot of bands have realized that videos and channels like this are great marketing and really help get their music out to people who haven't heard it before. It seems really obvious, but a lot of companies didn't and still don't get that.

I got to see Sabaton in Chicago a few years back with Nightwish and Delain. Something that has stuck with me ever since is how Joakim greeted the audience as "friends" with a warmth that really made it feel genuine. I see that same welcoming personality on Sabaton history and in interviews like this. Whether this is simply professionalism or his actual personality, its part of what makes Sabaton feel like a community that includes that band, rather than just fans and a band.

I remember that tour! I watched Sabaton and Nightwish when they went to Vegas and when I left a dash early to grab an ale A few friends and I ran into Joakim. He was friendly and hung out for a bit.

Dude, I Saw them in Dallas Sept 2022 with Epica. Yoakim talked to the crowd and chatted with two 7 year olds in the crowd. The crowd, mostly teens and 20 something’s, were chatting “USA USA”. Yeah. I’d like to meet these guys. Maybe the cruise 2023 or a festival.

This is just the best. My Girlfriend (now wife) was not having metal music at all while dating. But she met the Sabaton crew at her work in security at Arlanda Airport, Joakim and crew was such a nice bunch, she us now a proper fan for sure. Now she find the good new Metal stuff all these years later! 😁

My 7 year old son is a massive military history geek (seriously...the kid knows more random military history facts than most adults, it's insane). Anyway, a couple months ago I started hearing Sabaton coming from his tablet as well as his usual history documentaries. He's a natural musician, so the combination of history that's actually correct (he fact checks the songs, it's awesome) and great music is amazing for him. I introduced him to the Sabaton history channel and he's hooked. Thank you, Sabaton, for such a rich source for two of the things that seem to feed my kid's soul. (and yes, I recognize that my kid is weird. I think it's pretty cool.)

I adore Joakim, I've seen him and Sabaton Live maybe 5 times now? First time maybe around 2010 ( I still have a jacket signed by him and the rest of the band from the first time I saw them play. ) And he still has the same joy and love for his fans when he's playing a packed headline for a major festival as he did when Sabaton was playing a 10am slot to a few hundred people.

I met him like 12 years ago for a bit at a before party. He was very nice and incredibly funny. Also surprisingly tactful, given how much they drank that night haha Watching all the Sabaton Interviews, I'm glad to see this hasn't changed. Very interesting interview. In the start, he was not a great singer, but he became good with time. He also sounds like... better in Swedish for some reason. I guess he is more comfortable. I cannot imagine someone else singing in Sabaton. Just like I cannot imagine someone but James with Metallica.

As a photographer, Sabaton is an amazing band to shoot! The first few times it was purely for the visuals but I ended up loving the music as well. Joakim (and the rest of the band) seem so kind and genuine and I have only heard nice things about them in the industry. It was a pleasure to watch this interview!

I remember hammerfall opening for sabaton back in NYC on November 2019. Back then I kinda regretted having helloween be my first despite the show being amazing. After watching hammerfall perform it became clear and then sabaton started performing then I regretted not having sabaton be my first concert more than the other 2. (Sabaton was my 3rd concert at the time)

I was lucky enough to see them live in 2016 before they blew up and the whole band is just as nice as Joakim seems to be in this interview. They came out after the show and hung out for a while and took pics and signed autographs for anyone who wanted them. The energy of that first concert made me a lifelong fan.

I was at Hellfest '19 and Sabaton did a surprise show, because Manowar cancelled. Sabaton did a show the day before at a different festival at the same location (Knotfest) Joakim's voice was dying (because of the day before), but it was still among the top of the events at the festival. The feeling of brotherhood was just so fantastic. The other bandmembers did a great job of taking over some of the vocals. There was also a choir that helped for sure. It also helped that they played the lyric videos of their songs on the screens, so everyone was singing along, it was great! It was also quite funny to stand in line together with Joakim, in front of the food places, still wearing his stage armor :D

I really feel that Sabaton and Joakim have grown as a band so much in recent years. It's still pretty much the 'same' band yet their songs feel more unique. As longtime fan it really makes me happy. Thank you Elizabeth for this interview . Great work!

Saw Sabaton in concert last fall...this should be a good interview. Joakim seems like a good dude and was very fun to see in concert...he really connects with the crowd.

The most important thing as a metal singer is to be unique. Joakim is definitely one of a kind and he stands out because of it

The most unique about joakim is that he's a musician that has more instruments to play and he's a simple man, he stands out cause the band hangs out more like buddies and there more or less shy away from the rock party aspect, most are drinking blokes to be exact and they all put forward their parts when they make songs. Means every part of the band more or less contribute even if joakim and par had to banter time in time what lyrics or story they gonna match up the piece they just rehearsed. Quite unique from a metal head whose very level headed and mature also them and dragon force come-on two different styles but friends

I love that he watched and enjoyed Lawrence of Arabia! That movie's so awesome. I recently watched it again for the third or fourth time. It still holds up so well. I love that it's a classic film and I love the story told. Strongly recommend it to everyone that's willing to watch classic films. (Lawrence of Arabia was made in 1962)

Oh, this interview is a jewel! 7 years ago, when they released the album "Heroes" I had the greatest luck to interview Joakim just a few hours before their concert in Budapest and I can confirm everything. He was just so kind, funny, natural, patient (as my English was a bit rusted back then due to lack of use), he even offered me a free entry for the show. The interview was agreed to take like cc. 10 minutes but we talked for more than 20. I had a great time - I hope he had, too :) Uh, one sweet thing: I asked him about how the Ballad of Bull was born and what he felt about its slower pace, emotional load and all that, which, before, was not characteristic of Sabaton's music - this song is my favourite from that album. Joakim told me it was never intended to be on the album, the melody was just a promising improvision saved for later use, but accidentally it was saved in the Heroes folder and the other guys heard it and, obviously, loved it, so the ballad got in :) Turns out they got the taste of it (Christmas Truce, oh my...), luckily, and I love them for it!!

I have just recently become a huge fan of Sabaton. I knew who they were for many years but never bothered to check into them. I feel like such a fool for waiting so many years to listen them, but now I have all their albums and love every one of them!

I love Sabaton and this was great! Joakim and the rest of the guys in Sabaton seem like guys you just want to sit down with, have a drink, and have a good time with. I really wish they got more air play here in the USA.

I got to meet him in Tokyo. Sabaton stayed at the hotel I was already at for Loud park 2017. He was so tired from touring but happy to meet a fan. Met the band in the e!evator, great guys. I didn't get to the the show unfortunately due to work, but I got to meet so many bands over breakfast before heading off to work. I shared a kettle of tea with Michael Schenker, hung with Nick Barker and Tracii Guns. Good trip.

Sabaton performed in Spokane, WA with Delain and Nightwish a handful of years ago. I had never heard their music, but oh my gosh! They blew me away. The crowd went nuts! It was as if the energy given by Joakim and the band was given back by the crowd. Just insane! He came in with a kick in the air with the music and just lit the venue on fire. I have such fond memories of that night. Cheers to Sabaton for making such fun music!

You should interview Tommy Johansson. He is one of the guitarists from Sabaton, but also the guitarist and singer from his own band Majestica. He has an incredible vocal range.

You should check out their vlogs. They capture their down-to-earth humbleness personality, such as Par playing World of Tanks on the big screen they use on stage, and Joakim and Hannes having the usual fun when out hiking in Utah.

Regarding church organs: One of my absolute best musical memories is hearing Concerning Hobbits played on the organ in Husaby church, Sweden. The church itself is somewhere around 1000 years old.

Epic interview! Especially awesome to hear him talk about using old school approaches of tweaking their instrument set up to generate an organically better sound when layered in the recording process, versus just "autotuning" in post production.

I remember Sweden Rock 2012, Sabaton performed the Swedish national anthem for and with us. That feeling will stay with me for a long time. Seen them a couple of times but that one felt the most. Classy people.

A great band with a great discography! To go to the other end of the musical spectrum, you need to check out Sigor Ros' song "Daudalogn" (however it's spelt). Jonsi's voice will take you to another dimension.

Love listening to you two getting nerdy about music production. I dont play myself but have done some foh for smaller local bands. Hearing you talk about the small details and work that goes into it gives it a human touch. Makes it feel so much more relatable, not like something "as seen on tv".

Saw Sabaton when they came to town a while back. Amazing show and Joakim, as well as the rest of the guys, seemed to be having the best time up there. Made them one of my favorite bands right then.
