www.ted.com Sharing powerful stories from his anti-obesity project in Huntington, W. Va., TED Prize winner Jamie Oliver makes the case for an all-out assault on our ignorance of food.
Jamie Oliver is transforming the way we feed ourselves, and our children. Jamie Oliver has been drawn to the kitchen since he was a child working in his father's pub-restaurant. He showed not only a precocious culinary talent but also a passion for creating (and talking about) fresh, honest, delicious food. In the past decade, the shaggy-haired "Naked Chef" of late-'90s BBC2 has built a worldwide media conglomerate of TV shows, books, cookware and magazines, all based on a formula of simple, unpretentious food that invites everyone to get busy in the kitchen. And as much as his cooking is generous, so is his business model -- his Fifteen Foundation, for instance, trains young chefs from challenged backgrounds to run four of his restaurants.
Now, Oliver is using his fame and charm to bring attention to the changes that Brits and Americans need to make in their lifestyles and diet. Campaigns such as Jamie's School Dinner, Ministry of Food and Food Revolution USA combine Olivers culinary tools, cookbooks and television, with serious activism and community organizing -- to create change on both the individual and governmental level.

THe problem is, that most of the audience of the TED talks are probably not the ones who need to hear this. The people that have these problems are so deep in their bubbles, its ridiculously difficult to get to them.

The people at Ted Talk can educate others who suffer from eating disorders. Plus 1,352,168 (as the current view) of people have seen it for themselves, can apply it, or share this with others. Of course Im assuming many of those have got something positive out of this.

I don't think sugar is that bad. There were two twin brothers a while ago who did the following experiment: one ate a high carbohydrate diet for a month and the other went high on fat(low everything else). After one month, they both lost weight. Then they raced each other on bikes. The high carb guy beat the high fat guy by far. Basically, the high carb sibling had glycogen stored in his muscles while his twin brother didn't. Carbohydrates are a far better source of energy than fat or protein, although people in the 'healthy food' industry recommend the latter two and advise everyone to stay away from the first. I used to be just as afraid of sugar. Then I did an experiment and for six months I went on a vegan high carb diet, 4000-5000 calories a day. This included a lot of processed and added sugar. After six months, my blood sugar had gone down, my low-density cholesterol(the bad one) was also down. No 'protein deficiency' or anything, although I was low on vitamin B12(that is why I don't think a vegan diet is that good after all) I had to say all that. Stop blaming sugar. Saturated fat is bad. Obesity is caused by hormonal imbalance.
@carsonsepulveda
@carsonsepulveda 7 лет назад
To that I have to say that they may not exactly be scientist, the sample size is too small, they didn't control for metabolism, water intake, lifestyle. I've seen research that says when extra food then necessary is introduced into the body, the liver then working on overload has to immediately transfer the sugar to fat to deal with it later. A good documentary would be "Fed Up".

I just LOVE all the negative comments. Does it really hurt that bad to try to be healthy for a change? He's not wrong. It's sad how many people are dying just because they just couldn't try to eat healthy. The worse part? Home cooked healthy meals, vegetables, and fruit taste so much better than pizza, chips, and all those foods that have like 2,000 grams of sugar, if cooked the right way. I'd much rather eat homemade baked chicken parm or vegetable soup then McDonald's any day, but hey, that's just me.

I would love to see a follow up too. Sugar has been added to all our processed foods to make them taste better. COVID shutdowns haven't helped, as those foods are probably more reasonably priced because of these inexpensive fillers. We can't expect our bodies, organs, or brains to function optimally if we aren't drinking enough water, reducing our sugar, or get enough exercise and sleep. Of course, our bodies will fail and we will get sick because we are not maintaining them like we might a car.

@Marianne "no animal has empathy, only humans do" - that's not true. Animals ( like dogs) can sense if you are in pain or sadness and they trying to cheer you up. Isn't that empathy? And if you were right (about cows being killed) then every worker of slaughter house should be vegan/vegetarian - I doubt that. It's a system that refuses to change because it's always the same people, with the same methods, and same goals getting elected. These same people are in charge schools, are in charge of our nutritional systems in government, and are always in the pocket of these industries. It hasn't changed since the 70's, hasn't changed today, and probably won't change in the future. Just look at the sugar industry lobbyists, they have shut down every program that is prohealth in the US to protect their profits.

If you are watching this and you dont know, there are hundreds of you tube videos that teach just different pastas alone. You can do it

I am so on board with this. I have been on a mission to get my children's school to change their lunch menu. At this point 3 out of five meals actually come straight from fast food restaurants. Any suggestions on how to make a change would be appreciated. So far I wrote a 3 page proposal and volunteered to be an ambassador for nutrition field trips, nutrition classes and/or to be a go between to line up some speakers at our school. I currently pack my children's lunches and snacks every single day. It starts with the parents though. We have to take responsibility for our children's health and starting RIGHT NOW!

I command you on your effort and I'm inspired by it. As a father of three younglings, I find it sometimes difficult and so easy to take a shortcut. However, it is something worth fighting for, for ourselves, for our children and for our neighboors and countryman.!

Rebecca Huff what about going to the food companies who provide for the school? I'm a substitute teacher for my town and go to all the schools, the food is served by a few businesses. The people in control of the menu are driven by business. In college our Advisory board spoke with the food company who provides for our one lunch room and I swear those professionals knew what we wanted but kept making excuses for why it's too wasteful due to spoiling and expensive to provide fresh healthy food.
@TakesTwoToTango
@TakesTwoToTango 5 лет назад
Hi Rebecca I'm a teacher lke E. Betty, and I'm afraid she's got a point. It depends on where you live, but typically the schools don't actually get to choose the lunch menu. It's chosen by the companies that provide the food. So whilst most schools would read your 3 page proposal, the most they can do is negotiate with the companies. Another problem I've encountered and that Jamie Oliver's encountered in Great Britain is that parents very much don't tend to agree on which food should be served. I've seen several campaigns where schools or the food companies would cut down on meat portions. As Jamie said in the talk, the portions we eat are a problem. So these campaigns are often started as a health promotion tool (less meat compensated by more veggies). The food companies tend to not mind them, because cutting down on meat can be financially beneficial for them. But time and time again kids get upset because we're denying them meat, and parents very seriously do not like it when their kids get denied meat. Jamie's had some terrible experiences in Great Britain with moms complaining to him about dictating what their kid should eat whilst feeding their infants cola from a baby bottle. That is what we're up against. I don't know how to change this.

The people giving this video a "thumbs down" are in denial. Jamie, you are awesome! Thank you for all you do :) I FINALLY got my friend to switch to organic milk (no ADDED table sugar) with a max of one glass a day. I'm still trying to get her to switch between almond milk, coconut milk, and organic cows milk, but that will come. Since switching to organic: she went down THREE pant sizes, is no longer diabetic (NOONE that is diabetic should drink conventional milk - it has 4 tablespoons of table sugar), and the migraines she's suffered with for 30 years are gone!! Milk is the #1 trigger for migraines and allergies. I stopped conventional milk in 2006, and have only been on anti-biotics twice in 8 years! One for an accident and one an ear infection (my friend that stayed with me was super sick and had a double ear infection). I almost never get colds, and if I start to feel run down, I juice organic fruits and veggies and knock it out.

Welp, this didn't age well. 8 years later and the problem has gotten worse. The greatest flaw in the proposed solution is thinking big companies will happily comply with the changes and work together with the gov't to fix the problem. Imagine being this naïve. The fast-food industry and big food companies are the ones that created this problem in the first place, they are not the solution. Why would they ever help fix this? Selling garbage food and getting people hooked on sugar is extremely profitable. Imagine being so naïve about your proposed solution that you forget the basic tenants of capitalism...

Jamie Oliver is the best. This video is way past due, and I can't believe it takes an outsider to (hopefully) create an impact. This messages is more than simply important. When I studied in Florida for four years, I also volunteered at one of the elementary schools kitchen. I was flabbergasted that the schools received Tyson chicken wings to prepare that day. Everything was inside of large plastic bags, and the kitchen staff couldn't order anything else since people "higher up" decided this. Horrible! About that time, I also looked into GMOs, and I was shocked to learn how this viscous circle has no shame to also turn its head to kids - CHILDREN THAT ARE OUR FUTURE! Teh Fabled i think richard dreyfuss said it best. if all you teach is reading and writing, pretty soon people won't have anything to read or write about. unless you'd rather eat nothing but food created in a lab and thrown in a box for microwaves? most people aren't born with the skills necessary to just know how to prepare food by instinct alone. and as jamie once said "if a kid doesn't know what it is, he won't eat it." and then they'll spend the rest of their lives eating whatever crappy food they saw advertized on tv because nobody bothered to tell them they could eat an apple instead and it's probably a better idea. i had a college roomate that at the age of 22 had to call his damn grandma if he wanted to eat something that didn't come out of a box. now if that makes you laugh fine, but if you don't think that came from an obvious lacking in this kids education you're a fool. you sound like you're saying "the only reason to pay attention to the arts is if you want a career in it." you must be a blast at parties since you've apparently never seen a movie, television program, or read a novel, or even visited an art museum. all of those things came from people who got an education in the arts. orwell once wrote about a world without these things, read it. it's kinda fucking depressing. xD it's called having a hobby. people that don't have them ended up working a job they hate to support a life that's not making them happy. generally they turn into sad pathetic nihilists much like yourself.

The obsession of counting calories can work as a stress factor causing anxiety and instead of helping eating healthier, make people that are susceptible to eat under anxiety, go back to suggar and fat habits to still their anxiety. He does use a calorie list on his last books, however, I'm afraid that when it comes to obesity, there's more to it than calories. But I'm not a doctor nor a psychologist, I just give a guess based on things I read, which might also be not scientific but empirical. Anyways, Jamie Oliver is absolutely an inspiration. He's trying to re-educate eating habits that were transformed throughout decades onto a consumption related issue rather than a nutrition issue.

Nick Harris The standard western diet has far too much protein. You're right about processed carbohydrates being a problem. If people eat more vegetables and fruit without added salt, sugar and processed fats like cooking oils they won't have to worry about the calories. Also, it would be better if people only had a meal when they were actually hungry rather than the ritualized 3 or 4 meals a day.

tl;dr Jamie understand the importance of his message for the health of not just Americans, but the world, so he made its delivery exceptionally powerful and moving. The strong anti-obesity message of Jamie Oliver's talk was incredibly powerfully delivered. Particularly noteworthy and point-blank was that elephant-sized human casket for the obese. I fortunately, through focus and hard work don't have a weight problem, but seeing that casket and realizing that factually many many people everyday end up in something like that because of their poor and dangerous eating habits really crystallized the severity of Jamie's point. Seeing a large number in a statistics is one way to see a hard reality, seeing the ginormous coffin is part of that same reality. So impressed at powerfully Jamie delivered this absolutely crucial message. My 2nd favorite part of his talk was the unfortunate accounting bean-counting that leads to inexpensive and unhealthy school meals, as well as the "health food ignorance" in schools. He said it just took 2 one-hour sessions to illuminate the kids to what all the vegetables were. I thought that ignorance coupled with the efficacy of the quick solution was profound. Recognize angels and experts quickly. Another amazing solution. So many solutions! Brilliant! Man, I have seen quite a few TED Talks, and some with standing ovations, but this one, specifically, felt like the most deserved standing ovation. Such a superb speech!

Obesity and poverty are two sides of the same coin here in North America. You look for cheapest calories possible to get by. You are malnourished but obese. And it's not that ppl don't know better. It's that they don't have means to get proper food.
@jaylynn444
@jaylynn444 8 лет назад
+kslice Very true in some respects. After I finished school (I'm a Holistic Nutritionist) I realized just how little people know about what is truly healthy. MOST people THINK that they eat "pretty healthy" - but they don't. Because of the lies fed to us by the food industry (especially the Dairy & the Meat industry), people really do believe that milk & meat are good for us ( I did years ago!) THEY ARE NOT. Milk is the #1 trigger for allergies, it has FOUR tablespoons of added sugar (sugar turns into fat immediately in the body - unless you exercise right away, then you can use it as energy). Meat eaters have a 40% increased risk of heart disease & over a 40% increased risk of cancer (which is why 1 out of 2 men & 1 out of 3 woman now will get cancer in their lifetime). When they tout "eat meat for protein", what they should be saying is "eat the fat in meat for protein" because that's where the protein is coming from. And the nutritional info they tout is BEFORE it's cooked - you lose most of the nutrients after cooking. So, like you said, people are malnourished but obese because they go to cheap fast food places (or, should I say "fake food" places) to get cheap calories. The thing is, I can get a weeks worth of food eating organic raw food for $50! People who buy milk, cheese, & meat spend way more. But people really just don't know what to make, because they don't know what's healthy anymore. I'm offering my raw food classes on a donation basis, so I can help - not just the people who can afford cooking classes, but people who want to learn how to make healthy, quick, EZ & delicious meals at a price they feel comfortable with. We are all in this together & should help when we can :) Thanks for your post, bringing awareness to this issue :)

kslice You HATE people like me? U don't know me. But you HATE people that help others, have compassion for others, and help save people's lives every day? Wow, how sad for you. I have so much love in my life, and am surrounded by positive people. You obviously do not. I guess that's WHY you're feeling insecure & threatened, and feel the need to lash out. I don't feel that need. I will block you because I don't allow negativity in my life, which is WHY I'm such a happy person. Maybe consider counseling. Spewing hate & negativity will make for a sad existence.

+jaylynn444 Why I find your comment annoying ...1. It has nothing to do with what I said. So what it tells me is that you were more interested in hearing your own voice than listening the point raised. 2nd. I find your nutritional preachiness to be misguided and the product of ill informed nutritional advice you likely paid for that is the product of mainstream dieting trends and not factual or reputable science. 3rdly, to claim at the end that you are a nutritionist... Both you and I know that nutritionist is a label that can be used by anyone. Regardless of educational background. And in no way makes you an authority on the subject.

When this picture is being often seen, there is a timer which indicates remaining time to the bottom. Even if remaining time of a timer will be 0, he keeps making a speech. And operation is also overlooking that. The proof which was the speech which has only that value. This is a legend. I'm Japanese. It's good entirely compared with the United States, but westernization of a food is also advancing my country. There is sometimes a person doing eating habits which resemble Edwards family, too. It's old, but this speech should be worth even seeing now sufficiently. I want you to spread more. A translation machine is let through, so in unskillful English, I'm sorry. Thank you for reading😊
