Why open a school? To close a prison | Nadia Lopez

Our kids are our future, and it's crucial they believe it themselves. That's why TED Fellow Nadia Lopez opened an academic oasis in Brownsville, Brooklyn, one of the most underserved and violent neighborhoods in all of New York City - because she believes in every child's brilliance and capabilities. In this short, energizing talk, the founding principal of Mott Hall Bridges Academy (and a star of Humans of New York) shares how she helps her scholars envision a brighter future for themselves and their families.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

Dr. Lopez is one of my favorite people ever. She is truly an inspiration and has everyone’s best interest at heart. She taught at my school which was an all girls school before she taught at Mott Hall and she has been in my life ever since. She believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself. Truly an inspiration 💜

it's truly heartbreaking to see the comment section. she is talking about the need of QUALITY education, not lousy educations that does not instill our children with proper values and critical thinking, which often are the things that lead you to prison if you lack them. Of course, the private prison systems, mandatory minimums, racial tension and police accountability issue in America are infamously known all over the world(I'm from Hong Kong and I love America, but it pains me to see the news about America is always about race-fueled gun shots) and indeed, these are huge causes to the crime rate. However, there's no denial of the fact that low quality edcation would lead to increase in crime. It's about rooting out the causes of the problem while dealing with the current impacts, which are both important.

This is who everyone else needs to be more like! I’m getting tired of all the negative people just pointing fingers and complaining about this and that and the other people over there who must be like whatever! It doesn’t end! Ever! The world needs to stop complaining and suggest ways on how we can make things better vs. I’m better than you and everything is everyone else’s fault... except for when something great happens, taking the credit for whatever makes them look good! Nadia Lopez is the kind of person who we need to run for President! ✊🏼

Just making sure we are clear about this. The saying open a school, close a prison was coined by Victor Hugo. By this Victor meant people who are not educated miss out on a lot in life. It was not referencing the prison industrial complex. The number of prisons and prisoners in the United States started to explode around the 1970s. in 1950 34% of the population had high school diplomas, in 1970 around 50%, now over 80% of the population has a diploma, these numbers have no correlation, and certainly no causation with the number of prisons or prisoners in the United States. The explosion in prisons and prisoners in the United States is the result of criminalising the activities of poor and black Americans. if you want to close prisons start by decriminalising being poor and black in America!
@tenacious645
@tenacious645 8 лет назад
Faulty Rose being black is not a crime. Neither is being poor BUT being poor often leads to exponentially more legal trouble because not being about to afford lawyers, bail, fines, etc usually is punished with more time and fines. But being black isn't punished

@rosebellspring9585
@rosebellspring9585 8 лет назад
Hey tenacious 645! I'll address being black in the United States first. I suggest reading this artical: academic.udayton.edu/race/03justice/crime09.htm Black Americans are far more likely to be targeted by police and more likely to be arrested in circumstances where they would not be if they were a white suspect Racial profiling is also alive and well in the United States. Black Americans are more likely to be stopped in traffic, more likely to be stopped on the street, and more likely to be shot by police than white citizens In comparison to their population size blacks Americans make up a huge percentage of prisoners in for drug offences despite the fact black Americans are much less likely to use drugs Certain laws also mis-proportionately effect black Americans. For example black Americans are more likely to use crack cocaine, while white Americans are more likely to use powder cocaine. A person with a given amount of crack cocaine receives the same sentence as someone who possessed 100x as much powder cocaine Laws also mis-proportionately effect the poor such as loitering laws making it difficult to sleep, beg, or sit in some circumstances. Certain jobs often taken by poorer Americans such as prostitution are illegal in much of the United States While Debtors' Prisons are formerly illegal in the United States people can and still do go to jail for not being able to pay debts
@tenacious645

Faulty Rose wow. That was actually really interesting to read. Thanks for the info. It's not always easy to see the things that aren't innate to your experience through life you know? I'm never going to be an apologist, but I do have open eyes. When the facts are there how can anyone STILL ignore the reality?

finally someone who knows how to implement education on the ground level. a woman working on the frontline indeed! Well done lady. Definitely more people like you are required but sadly policies made by technocrats, many of whom have never set foot in a classroom, prevent shuch bold steps to be taken by educators. They continue to believe that policy by itself will solve the problems of the education systems globally. They fail to acknowledge that teachers are creative people who must personally want their students to succeed in order to improve student performance. Teacher efficacy has been found to be the determing factor in student performance more than resources, policy, etc. I have taught for more than 20yrs in the Caribbean and now in the UK and I continue to see the same gaps in both systems. Some gaps are larger than others especially in systems where policy condemns good communication between teacher/student. Its time to get serious about educating children who have been undermined by a system made to keep the rich rich, and the poor poor. Needless to say I love this presentation! Great work! Great Work! I applaud you and your team and your students!

Who makes our future are ourselves,be a great educations or any professional of our area.Brooklyn a small neighborhood of the US. Wher poverty traffic and, gangs dominats everything,children,teens all living in the same space. It is' notable that to change that would need a lot of effort,and someone got. In Brooklyn,warrior woman faced several problems building a school to ensure the future of several children. She was very hardworking,because she woud't be anyone who could face problems how:find teacher,technical resources,Counting Partnerships and Chat with Gangs. After all,the difficulties faced,she did not give up sanover and concluided her project which was the construction of the school.

Not if its your first job or all that is available for you at the moment. Your ultimate goal should be to start your own business though... She is simply saying there is an endless amount of opportunity out there, don't live life thinking you have to settle for KFC and Burger King.

Her point was something along the lines of "...her aspirations/goal was to work in a fast food restaurant", ad she was not trying to say that working their is a bad thing, but trying to say that why should a chld have such low expectations for themselves. What child should think "" I want to work in a fast food restaurant" where they could also think "I want to go to a good university, get a sustainable job and start a family". I honestly do not think her point was to say that working there is bad, but to say that a child should just have greater ambitions in life.

***** Well I guess if you love working fast food buddy, go for it. I love working with kids and I now run "my own" Daycare. If you love flipping burgers or serving meals to others, thats fine but dont stay pivoted in that position, you'll never progress or move forward by doing so.

The gener inequality is something very hard of handle, but the women are more and more strive for equality. For them to achieve their rights don't just depend on them, but also men. The fight against that inequality is related with human rights. Because they are despised, and they can't enter any employer. Women should work where you want be in an office or in a mechanic.

Be teacher , sometimes go beyond of the school. Many times we don't give the real worth that them deserve, while they do all for we. The violence and the poverty, are two thinks that are intertwined, that way children and youngs how Teddy, had difficulties of learning and don't had someone to inspire himself, beyond of the their educators. It's unacceptable imagine that, for open a school, want inprove a community, a director, needed request permission for gangs, beyond of have that deal with children below of the rate, lack's teacher and technology. The only solution for a best world is invest in schools and no in prisons or in firearms.

School were build by industrialist to have workforce ready whenever they needed, but what happen to all those school or so called grading system where one study to pass exam score high. How come we don't have people like Einstein, the reason is this grading system and money making machines killing our younger generation ability, they stay within the box unable to explore out of the box. Today unemployment is continuously growing, people with high grades, having degrees from well known colleges and universities they don't have work and it will be worst in next five years. We do not need schooling system anymore because that's not only killing the ability of our children also making our parents to work even more harder compare to last 2 decades why because they have to pay for school fees plus need to bear other related expenses which cost fortune. Now days student have more debt to pay compare to credit card holders. We need self thought environment where our parents don't teach us how to hammer the nail but they would say here is nail and hammer create whatever you would like to.

tahir7896 Schools are not perfect but having people go to schools is far better than making it impossible for them to have a perspective in life. In the current system you need education for both, wisdom but also for a stable life and perspective. Areas with less access to education have the highest criminality rates.

But if you don't have many prisons, and have many people who are educated, you will have a lot more people on the job market who are underemployed, or unemployed, but are educated and know why they are underemployed and/or unemployed... They understand that the current economic and political paradigm is designed to siphon capital to just a few families. If we did that, the current political system will not survive... you are right, however, schools like these are for children who dont/can't/aren't able to understand the value of education, as no one they know have careers and wealth - they are subjected to violence and drugs and also an awful environment for learning. these schools teach these kids the value of learning, therefore making a change
@JLydecka
@JLydecka 8 лет назад
Huh, that makes a lot of sense to me actually. I still think kids in general shouldn't be forced to go however I understand that there are worse things than school, like an abusive home. Still, I think the vast majority of kids will learn the value of education when given the opportunity and FREEDOM. It's a tricky problem with kids who are mentally hurt as they probably require more guidance. Thanks for shedding light x

Has anybody ever thought that schools are not the right place to wage a culture war? Has anybody ever thought it might be a good idea to deal with the problems around students as opposed to trying to make schools respond to those problems? Has anybody ever given any thought to the root cause of poor schools and communities? I will never understand why every other video we get a person crying out for additional funds, or another school to solve a problem thats community based! Family planning and parenting could solve 80% of these problems. Has anybody every wonder why we can't have these same "outcomes" at any elementary/middle school in the district? Ill tell you why, because the chlldren that attend her middle school have adults who want their children to have a better chance, so they get up and sign the child up. If public school required the same level of accountability and support from parents that charters and private schools did, than most of these problems would go away! I get so irritated by people who play the same violin that is supposed to tug at your heart for all of the underserved children. What would happen if we switched from expending energy feeling sorry for these children and started feeling anger at parents who produce children, and then lack the time or care that would have them sign their children up for charter school! It is time out for another charter school. It is time IN for PARENTING! Parenting does not start the day the child is born, it starts the day you put a condom on, and choose to wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
