Technique 22 , Cold Call helps teachers become successful in student engagement. Teacher must be cognizant to the true needs of those entrusted to their care. Do not think that engaging students is for the sake of engagement (i.e. entertainment), think of it as a way to keep them focused on the work, the learning.
Learning has nothing to do with what the teacher covers. Learning has to do with what the student is able to accomplish, learn, or master. Learning occurs only when the students demonstrate accomplishment. Cold Call will help you understand where your students stand on the road to MASTERY.

Can this technique be used throughout the lesson? I mean, should it be a 5 minutes activity or a general rule that I ask individuals by their names whenever I want? I imagine that it would be beneficial to address individual students throughout the class. (For example, when I introduce a new topic: Class, look at the picture. What's on the picture, John? (There are people.) Very good. And what are they doing, Danielle? (...))

I actually think that the deeper you go into a lesson, the more important it is to use this technique. If you have a good entrance routine and warm-up activity, you are likely to have a good engagement at the beginning of your presentation. However, the deeper into a lesson you go, the more likely students are to drift off task. Because of this, I try and remind myself (I still write down "COLD CALL" on my short-hand lesson plans) that students need to be re-engaged every 5-7 minutes - and more helpfully if done so by name. The spontaneity of "Cold Call" is one of its key elements, so I would recommend that you fold it into lessons along with a few other selection techniques. Freshness in selection will produce far more attentive listeners.

@@BryansEnglishClub Thank you for your fast and comprehensive response! I really appreciate it. I'm a beginner teacher of English as a foreign language and I look for ideas to improve my teaching. Recently, I found "How to teach like a Champion" and its content made me astonished. Reading about the first technique, No-opt-out, was like a revelation. It is so simple to introduce, and, at the same time, it changes a lot when it comes to students' approach to the lesson. I feel it can do wonders together with the cold call technique.
