Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! In this video we train Rogue to track birds in the field. By building on success, Rogue was able to pick this skill up pretty fast. Tracking is a very important thing for a young bird dog to know!

Thank you for not editing out the parts where Rogue isn't tracking perfectly, it is encouraging for us whose dogs aren't perfect out of the gate.

You’re a great dog trainer! I was born in Cuba and trained my first dog in my early twenties. It was a GSP, a female, and not having any prior experience in dog training I managed to get my hands on a very old Spanish book written around 1920 which I used as my only reliable source on the matter. That dog went on to win many competitions and we shared many hours of fun hunting quail, dove, ducks, etc. It amazes me how many of the techniques I learned back then and used on Hannah (that was the dog’s name) are exactly the same as the ones you use in your videos, which leads me to think you are the guardian of an age-old, beautiful tradition. My best wishes to you! Being the father of three girls it pleases me tremendously to see you put so many men hunters to shame with your abilities.

A GSP? Or GSD?

@@hazsmoothwalker7458 GSP, as in German Shorthaired Pointer. I’ve never seen a GSD show pointing instincts, but again, nobody has seen everything. :-)

I just came accross your channel. You are inspiring! I have a standard poodle that is a born bird dog, pointing all the time and makes hanging out difficult as he chases everything from birds to deer. I am not a hunter but would definately do some drills with him just for his pleasure. We are in MN (home base) a couple months per year but otherwise travel in an RV. Any recommendations for training since we are on the move most of the year?

What to do once they get that down. And how will they find pheasant in the wild when I can’t start them on a trail

So do you make the path a little more difficult each time or do you do easy paths for awhile before making it more difficult. Thanks for the videos. They will come in very handy in the next few months as I take the time to train my lab.

Holymium TV we start simple and the add difficulty. But nothing beats wild pheasants to teach tracking!

Started hotdog tracks with my two dogs, was going to switch to blood tracks. Would you recommend that or go straight to birds?

Have you ever had a dog point the dead bird at the end of track? is it an issue and how do you deal with it if it does?
@StandingStoneKennels

How much time do you spend daily training young pups? I don't want to tire my gsp too much but I also want to have productive training sessions. Any recommendations are appreciated. TIA!

So I'm trying to get my dog to get the dead bird on my command but when I say fetch he does not know what to do?

You should bring your dog to renowned trainer for the force fetch training.

I have a 5 1/2 month old Boykin spaniel I can’t get the dog to pick up a dead bird and bring it back to me she just wants to run off with it and eat it how should I fix that so she brings the bird back to me

That’s a pretty natural reaction imo. Positive is the dog isn’t afraid of birds. Negative is the dog doesn’t know recall. Id work on retrieving with bumpers until recall is better then reintroduce birds later. Be patient spaniels develop slower than other breeds.

That is or should be referred to as drag, not a track.
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 3 года назад
It’s an introduction to tracking. Same way you teach blood tracking for deer, by doing drags first, which we explain in the first minute of the video.
