I hope this video helps you to get more success with your distracted dog. Good timing and consistent expectations really go a long way when it comes to achieving your dog training goals! One key element to having a dog who loves to listen is by being a good leader for them. There are a few simple things that you can do to show your dog that you're worth listening to. Your training videos are the best! However I do wish you would do more videos with a dog that isn’t a super obedient border collie and/or brought up by a professional dog trainer.. perhaps using a dog that’s already starting to develop a bad habit would be most useful to most people?

In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues. ❤️💕

Hi! My dog I've had for a couple weeks is a stray who came from a shelter in CA. I have taught her how to sit and shake, but she is very aggressive towards dogs so it's a challenge walking her on a leash (I live in an apartment so I have no choice). I saw this video and wanted to start with the "leave it" training and I followed all the rules. I have a good amount of experience with dogs so I understand the importance of immediate reward etc. or they won't know what they're getting rewarded for. Anyways, I tried this "leave it" practice with my dog first with the tupperwear with holes and hot dogs in it, but was too distracted by the treat in my hand (I was hiding). We both stood there in silence and i didn't look at here as I waited for her to go to her "distraction" -- but she just ended up laying down next to me. After that, I decided to put a rotisserie chicken on a plate 20 or so feet away as her distraction and I had a hot dog. She knew the chicken was there and she knew what it was but she was almost terrified to go near it.I even told her "OK" to give her the permission to get close to the chicken but at that point she ran to the door in fear?! It was very odd because she is SO food motivated. I'd give her about an 8 in terms of aggression on a leash. She's 2 year old sweet pit mix with black lab who seems very trainable but was clearly not socialized. I'm not quite sure why this is happening if anyone can please help?

Hey i understand your plight, i also have a bull terrier mix who’s a rescue and does display very strong aggression to other dogs on walks. Having said that i feel at this stage it’s just a constant in aiming to train and achieve better from the dog. I can say we’ve only had her since the first week in April and there are some improvements, but at other times she catches me out and acts up. All i can say is we just have to keep going watch these videos and similar and keep up the training and good work.

This is so so helpful, gonna start on this today! Do you have any suggestions for how to get a dog to leave food alone automatically? I have to walk him in the dark sometimes when I can't see food on the ground, and it'd be in his mouth before I even knew it was there. He has a serious food allergy so this is a big problem for us.
@puudathemeow5593
@puudathemeow5593 3 года назад
Don't feed them the entire portion when feeding and use the rest for training (aka use his allergy friendly kibble/feed as a reward instead of having separate treats) or you can use a toy, patting and playing with them as a reward if that's something the dog likes.

Omg a training video without a dog thats completely trained already. Love it. I have a Patterpoo and he's a stubborn little sod so i can't wait to train this. Also, odd question but do you know how i can get him to "come" when in the house, he has moments when he's in the kitchen (or garden) and i want him to leave the room with me so i can close the door (so he doesnt get in the bin etc) but he'll just stand there looking at me like i'm an idiot. I've tried all sorts; i have to go in a help him out whilst praising as he leaves. Out on walks he's "come" command it pretty good generally (without major distraction). Thank you.

This is great :) This is slightly off topic, but what do you think is the best strategy to help your dog handle an aggressive, barking dog they encounter on a walk without jumping on you, barking back, or trying to run away? Is it best to attack this from a “no jumping” perspective, a “sit” even with distractions, or a “leave it”? I find that my dog’s been learning well and quickly, but he still slips up 5% of the time, and I’m wondering if there’s a better approach to use. Thanks!

We try to keep it put up (but we really want her to have access to it all the time) and watch her carefully but if she gets the chance she plunges in with both paws and makes a huge mess. @McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 года назад
Hi there, Christianne! I know a lot of people have used a “coop cup” for a puppy who loves to make a mess of their water bowl. We have also used them for puppies as well. Basically it’s a bowl that will attach to the crate door and it will secure the bowl at your puppy’s head height. We also use this for senior dogs to keep their bowl up high enough so they don’t have to bend to get it! Worth a try! Thanks for watching! ~Ken

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 года назад
Hi there, Rob! Because those distractions are unpredictable, you’ll need to teach your dog what the command means long before you test them with a distraction like that. Use a controlled distraction in a controlled environment then take that skill outdoors. Once your dog has a reliable response to your “leave it” you’ll see that the skill transfers to whatever distraction is around. As long as you’ve done your foundations work! This is a super handy skill to have, so spend some time on each progression. Happy Training! ~Ken

Please help. We have a 5 months going on six month old female lab puppy who is very destructive despite her many many toys. I am in high school so when I come home I sometimes have homework to do and I cannot always play with my puppy but I do try to at least two times a day and I also try to walk her twice a day. She has her tantrums where she becomes excited due to either someone running or not being able to get her toy or frustration where she jumps on people and bites them very aggressively and doesn’t seem to stop obviously we try not to shout but when we do she just gets more aggressive. She used to do this every time we came home from my walk after crossing the road and a few days ago while my sister took her on a walk on the way back while my sister was crossing the road she went completely crazy and jumped on my sister and bit her continuously and attacked her and growled and cars had to stop due to this. She does this at home as well after becoming very excited. She pulls on the leash a lot and I try to do dominance training but she only listens when there’s food involved. Today she tore up the door frame and took off the paint. She had various toys laying around and I had played with her beforehand. This is the last straw for my parents and they say that if anything else happens they will get rid of her. I just want her to be well behaved and I tried to exercise her and play with her as much as I can and she still is destructive and she still gets very aggressive at times. Please help us.

@unaestrella1876

You can teach leave it a different way, maybe this is more advanced I'm not sure. But have the food in your hand, secure, as soon as the dog looks away and stops trying to get it say 'yes' and give him another treat. (You can add leave it when he does it again) then when he gets better at that move the treat into an open hand, so it's free to get say leave it, and if he leaves it keep on doing this exercise, if he doesn't leave it, close your hand everytime he reaches for it. He will soon get the idea. Then you can try this with his meal. And say 'okay' as a release work and gesture towards the bowl.

Hi! Could you please help us!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🐶 My puppy turned 4 months old today (male). He never showed any aggression neither to us nor to dogs. Today I was teaching him “leave it”. Everything went great until I started using boiled chicken head.🐔And boiled chicken meat was as a treat. He got crazy, when I told him to leave it, grin👹, started to jump on my legs, trying to bite me. My husband came to help, took the puppy up in his arms. Then the puppy bit his cheek.😵 My husband hold him, trying to settle him down. As I understand this happened because he didn’t get this chicken head in the end. (he never tried it before as well). Right?🤔 We never used harsh negative reinforcement for him, never beat him of course. Please tell us, what should we do in such situations? Should I keep using this kind of food for “leave it”, to provoke him? Or stop using it? How to behave if he will get crazy like this again? Thank you in advance for any advice 🙏🏻😊❤️

Hi there, Mariias! You’re right that you shouldn’t use such a high value distraction with your puppy at this point in his training. More importantly, make sure he is always on a leash or a house-line when you’re working with him. That way you’ll have lots of control if you need it. Here’s a link to our house-line video: Puppy Training Essentials - Your Puppy House-Line - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-45kdNR6nAOs.html Thanks for watching ~Ken

McCann Dog Training, thank you for such a quick reply! Yes, we won’t use it any more until he is ready for it! And yeah, he is always on the leash while training. And we also should not punish him for such behavior, because he still cannot control his impulses, because he is a puppy, right?

Quick question our three year old male boxer is such a sweet and is a pristine walker, will ignore squirrels garbage men other people......until he sees dog and he becomes very aggressive to the point where when we are trying to correct him he will turn to us and attempt to bite us. This is a huge issue that we are having trouble to correct, and we are worried that this issue will only lead the major problems with our town. Otherwise you would never think he could act like that since he loves snuggles and playing catch, and saying hi to new people.

I take my 5 month Siberian Husky on runs (vet-approved, and only 2-3 miles at his pace). There have been a few times I didn't see a piece of garbage, and we end up on the side of the road with me prying his mouth open. No easy task! He is starting to leave most pieces of paper or plastic. Occasionally, I have to bribe him with "drop it", and reward with a treat and a happy "yes!" Those training treats have become invaluable.
@ROBDee-ho9lu
@ROBDee-ho9lu 4 года назад
Nice! Did you start at home with 'leave it and drop it'? I'm learning my 3 dogs to react on the silent whistle in the house and that goes really perfect. While there are no distractions. Will continue for 1 month and then go outside to do the same while the whistle has become imprinted, outside will be much easier than if I've started outside the house.

@carolinestone4527 4 года назад
@@ROBDee-ho9lu I do still say "leave it." He is much quicker to drop most things, but I still use treats to reinforce
@ROBDee-ho9lu

@@carolinestone4527 Very nice. But what's wrong with using treats? He's still a puppy...My 3 dogs are 6, 7 and 8 years old (all shelter dogs) and I'm teaching them the silent whistle PLUS treats. Every time I whistle (which I do abt 10 times a day) they come running to me, expecting treats OR their food. MUCH later (don't know when yet) I will whistle and sometimes only say 'well done' without a treat. But first they have to react inside AND outside 100%. So I've a long, long way to go. I wish you much success with your pup.! Kind regards from the Netherlands.

1:10 I see McCann trainers, Mike in particular use these little pokes to correct the dogs behaviour quite a lot during the videos, but have never seen an explanation of how and when to use them? Is that just the way he pets his dog or is he poking/flicking in a way the dog doesn’t like to show it a bad behaviour?
@adamantemrose2285
@adamantemrose2285 2 года назад
I've watched a few videos, and I think it was mentioned in a puppy video, they said to poke and reward, to get the dog used to the touch. Then they use it when they need the dog to focus on them, i hope that helps!!

What do you do if they ignore the distraction, come back with you, but then keep staring at the distraction even when they are next to you?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 года назад
Hi there, Jon! I would use your voice, move away and once you get their attention solely on you, “YES” and reward. You may need to figure out what kind of distance that requires before they’re more interested in you than a distraction. But at that level of understanding we’re not going to wave food in front of their face as some kind of request for attention. But we will reward their choice to abandon looking at that thing and paying attention to you! Happy Training! ~Ken

My dog quickly learns I'm going to give him a treat when he looks at the distraction (which is also treats). Pretty soon he will look at the distraction but then just stand there looking at me because he knows I have treats. If I use a higher value distraction/treat, he uses all 50 lbs to pull me to the distraction/treat. I've watched this video so many times but he and I can't seem to get the hang of this. Discouraged.

Your dog is obviously quite smart and figured out your routine... I'd try catching him around the house with different things: place a toy in the middle of the room and when he notices it, use the command and repeat the steps in the video. Also, as mentioned in the video, distance is a huge factor: the further away you are, the less interested your dog will be.

Instead of doing it this way, try and use your hand instead of the floor. Put the treat in your hand, closed fist and when he stops trying to get the food, and he looks away give him a treat from your other hand. Do this until he had mastered it and you can make it harder by having an open hand, (obviously add the cue 'leave it' when he does leave it at the last stage) test this now by saying 'leave it' when your hand is open with the treat. As soon as he ignores it give the treat from your other hand. Keep on doing that until he's perfect. Then move to the treat being on the floor etc..like that.

Please help me,y dog is great with all your training ...apart from one issue that I cannot break in my dog.... Whenever I meet another dog on my path she littraly goes from being a totally controled well behaved non pulling on leash etc dog, to a "hysterical -i- want to- meet- the -other -dog on -the- path" ... I tried this technic on your video, with no success... please help as It's like she lockes on to the dog coming towards us and refuces to listen to any ANY commands !! All she wants to do is meet the dog for playtime... But it's not always appropriate due to this country's leash laws.....I'm 54 and have severe spine issues, so her suddenly pulling and going out of control on the leach is a very painful expirience for me....

@secession77 - lol. Smh! My "Distraction Cat", DID FIT in my plastic container. Perhaps you should try using one of those clear plastic storage tote/bin. Also.... you may wanna drill some holes in the top of the lid too. *(Disclaimer: Please make certain that while you're using "POWER TOOLS", You're practicing safely. It may be a good idea to take the cat OUT of the BOX, and into a HAT instead!) Soo... be REEEEEEAAALLLLL CAREFUL NOW! You don't wanna be drilling holes into the top/lid, while your "Distraction Cat" is still inside. LMAO! Yeah.... I learned that the VERY hard way. No one had ever explained that to me before. Not to mention I probably could've used a larger Plastic Bin. It wasn't that my 10 inch Drill Bit was too... BIG... THE TOTE/BIN WAS TOO DAMN SMALL. I MEAN, SERIOUSLY... WHO DOES THAT? SELL YOU A PLASTIC CONTAINER FOR YOUR "DISTRACTION CAT" WITHOUT HOLES? HUH? Gosh... smh. I miss my "Distraction Cat".
