I cannot get her under control. I've tried food,toys,clicker,air horn. But none of thise seem to help. So I'm begging for help please.

Massive respect for this video, because he sets realistic expectations by explaining that this is where he's at AFTER doing this exercise a number of times with this dog, and he doesnt edit out when the dog doesn't listen and he has to reset the difficulty for the dog by moving further away.

Except that this is a border collie mix and he's done this exercise every day for the past six months and just keeps re-doing and re-doing and re-doing and re-doing ...he'll keep doing it every day for the next ten years and pup's behavior will not change.... Hahahahaha Hahahahaha Hahahahaha

My dog lunged at cars, squirrels, other dogs, cats, people etc etc. This video is so helpful and with practice, this method is working. My dog will ignore cars now which is huge. The key is the distance judgements....go back if poor response or no response and then move back and try again. I had to use only 3-5 feet at a time, but again, this really works. Give it a try! Thank you

Will this type of correction teach the dog that other dogs are bad? I ask because I had a dog trainer scold me about using this cue with my puppy when she was barking and wanting to play with a dog on a leash while she was on a leash.

How about let them sniff other dogs. they are just being social and if you cant read a dogs body language don't own one. How would you like to be kept away from ever touching another human being? people are so stupid.
@radagheta6117
@radagheta6117 2 года назад
@@rapierwhip This isn’t about not allowing your dog to interact with others dogs ever. If you have an overexcited dog who would run up to another dog and be very pushy or bouncy even if in a playful manner this might trigger a defensive response in the other dog which can lead to a fight. Many dogs don’t want to interact with every dog they see. That is why you wanna teach your dog to ignore other dogs on walks, be relaxed around them and let them interact only with dogs that are friendly and happy to greet and play with other dogs.
@rapierwhip
@rapierwhip 2 года назад
@@radagheta6117 Most dogs won't do that though, of all the dogs I had, I didn't have one that was pushy like that and aggressive, which from my experience is more the exception than the rule. Just adapt and kept the lead tight and be ready to keep them back. if the dogs who is excited cause aggression in the other dogs then the owner of that other aggressive dog would know to keep their dog at bay since they most often would have displayed this before. if they lead their dog in they probably know their dog is not usually aggressive. There are 4 parties at play two dogs and two owners read all properly for a happy dog meeting. Also if the excited dogs causes aggression in another dog their growl or warning will be picked up by the excited dog and he/she will be he one who will back down and submit, otherwise he is an aggressive d0g and again you of course keep him away as per what u say. It is just more uncommand than common.

Great video! I just found your vid today! 3 days ago I started doing desensitization near the dog park from a 50 fr distance and working up to 20 feet ! Today is day 3. So have to remember to remain having a calm tone, no excitement- because it causes excitement. Toward the end of your video when you rewarded dog you got overly excited and it caused the dog to be roused more and bark. My dog doesn’t bark near dog park, but a lot of whining and pulling. He is doing better and excited to get him to walk better when he sees another dog on walks. He has a good heel and looks back and checks with me.

These videos are so helpful to me! My 18 week old Golden Retriever has been having a time with this and I know now I'm making it way too hard for him too soon. I'll start moving farther away or going the other way. I've been expecting him to be able to do this as dogs walk by on the other side of the street in the neighborhood. I also haven't been telling him to leave it, although he does that with items -- and does drop it well too. I've been telling him to sit and stay. Thanks for the video!

This is a great video and I can understand what you're doing, however what do you do if when out walking you can't control the distance? For example we rake our young puppy for walks up a lane, it's 95% of the time quiet but there's we can't guarantee not meeting another person with dogs so how do we get round this? Would you walk the opposite way and find an alternative route?
@tadbubs

Steve, this is brilliant. You articulated and anticipated my biggest challenge. Billy Jr. and I have participated in obedience trials and had no issues when going to practice. He was fine with drilling (heel on/off leash, drop on retrieve, distance control, "leave it", fetch, etc.). Now that we don't go to training he seemed to have backslid. He has also gone death in one ear. To accomplish the new motive to "leave it" I'm wondering if his partial deafness is a contributor? Why is it other dogs don't react so much, even when they are untrained...weird?

I took my mom's pit bull, Archie, to training class for the first time last weekend and he was so excited about everything that he barked - a lot (he doesn't get out much). He wasn't being aggressive toward any of the other dogs, or people, he was just super-excited to be there. I know I need to discourage this, but don't want to tell him "no" when he's just doing it to express happiness (at least I think it's just happiness) so I'd just stand in front of him and put pressure on the lead - but trainers still had to come over with the squirt gun to get him to stop. We're invited for a private session with the trainers this Wednesday and will walk around their facility to meet some of their day-camp dogs, etc. I think he just needs to have more experiences outside the home and will calm down eventually. Am I on the right track? Love you guys!

@reginaschwab6286
@reginaschwab6286 4 года назад
@@lorimaxamillion He did explain the key is Distance, you have to start the training further away from his stimulus (other dogs) and gradually work closer and closer over time. For your dog that might be 75ft or 100ft. for another dog it might only be 25ft. You have to watch your dogs response and catch it before he is over excited. Also must have a reliable "leave it" before you to into a situation with distractions.
@reginaschwab6286
@reginaschwab6286 4 года назад
Distance, high value treats and a good reliable "leave it" are all necessary before you train anywhere near other dogs. I feel he did a good job stressing the distance factor in this video along with showing the "change of direction" . Videos often make it seem like it's a quick process when in reality you might have to train 15-20 min. every day for weeks with some dogs. Consistency does matter; if you let them pull you toward the stimulus sometimes, they will think they can do it always. Happy Training!
@mdg6117
@mdg6117 4 года назад
Add more distance. My dog is not food driven either so I use a favorite toy and I get him real excited to play with me. Sometimes that is more rewarding for some dogs than a treat. Reward with play for 10 or 15 seconds, then give him the command again, use the toy as a lure.

Dog owners won't retrieve their dogs or keep them away even when told puppy is on training and it's not ok to let their dogs come and steal his food/toys ! The only thing I can do to stop my puppy to build up stress barking is to make him run the opposite way with me ! He used to respond to Quiet until his 4-5months. Hi there, Fanny! We actually have lots of our instructors in a similar situation as you. It's worth your effort to find quieter locations when you want to challenge your puppy. But lots of these foundational exercises can begin in your apartment! Even the lobby could be a great spot to set up some challenges. Find a spot as far away as you can get to begin working on some of these distractions. That is always done after you have shown your puppy how to be right in the distraction-free environment of your apartment! I work nights, and when I come home at 7am the first big walk before her breakfast includes some training in the last half (usually an hour and a half or so total walk) once she tires down a little bit. This works WONDERS. Being tired and a little hungry keeps her focus away from distractions and on you. Our Sophie is a notoriously aloof breed and is hard to keep paying attention. If you feel uncomfortable with this, maybe feed your dog a little bit (even one scrambled egg works!) of NON-CARB food before going out. Do not give them carbs in the morning, and then expect to train. And absolutely DO NOT feed them a big meal and then immediately go out and train OR exercise. This could really f*ck up your dog's gut. After eating, they need at least an hour of downtime. It's the same reverse, do not take your dog out for a big walk and training session, then come home and immediately feed them a big meal. Wait at least a half-hour after getting home on this one. - Ohk, that was a bit of a ramble. Sorry.

My dog has gotten much better she's an English setter mix and has even learned to ignore the squirrels for the most part :-) But if another dog is acting like a nutcase on their walk aggressively pulling the owner and barking at my dog she reacts in kind. So she certainly feeds off the bad behavior of the other dog her hackles go up and she's jumping around like a nut case as well any thoughts on that? For the most part she loves dogs and well-behaved dogs walking on their leash don't bother her at all.

Find another location with less off lead dogs to distract your dog baby steps. Or have an arm-wrestling match with the other owners and losers have to put their dogs on a leash. But that takes mastering arm wrestling so the first option is best, lol. A better option is getting to know those other people with off lead dog's you'd be surprised that they would love to help with your dog's training. that's what I do!

Farmer Fpv thank you! I might try the arm wrestling!! I try to enlist the help of other dog owners to help in the training and most people are very kind and patient, it’s just those odd few who shout from the other side of the park ‘it’s ok my dog is friendly’ when their dog has already run over. Also Sadie won’t take any treats at all while on a walk (I’ve tried all sorts, even tripe...bleurgh!) and she’s not into toys so she makes it all that bit more challenging! @McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 года назад
Hi there, Emily! We don’t have any videos dealing with aggressive or shy dogs. We specifically avoid that kind of content because we know that there are so many different reasons that a dog may be worried or aggressive, and if you were to apply the wrong training techniques to your dog, they could make the situation SO much worse. Not only risking your safety, but your dog’s as well. The best thing to do is research a qualified behaviorist in your area and get some advice that’s specific to your dog’s needs. Dogs that are worried can be especially sensitive to the wrong information, and it’s important that you support your dog rather than “fix” a behavior. Sorry I couldn’t be more help! ~Ken

@camrose1765
@camrose1765 3 года назад
when your dog is calm enough, it can greet. try asking a friend to bring their calm dog out, make them stand in one spot and use them as a tool for a greeting. Walk toward the dog, and as soon as your dog starts pulling, lunging or possibly barking turn away and walk in the other direction. the dog will learn that it can only approach when in a calm state of mind. repeat this process until your dog is calm while approaching the other dog, then allow them to greet. this is a really good way to socialise a nervous dog and get them used to other dogs. however if your dog is more on the aggressive side it may not work, but it's worth a try.

My dog is a Great Dane, 100 pounds heavier than I at 180 & when I take him for walks he’ll try & go after other dogs and people, and I don’t have the strength to hold him back all the time. Sometimes I get dragged on the street, & sometimes I’ll get him to keep walking, but not without him looking back at the dogs/people. It makes it hard to take him for walks just because I know if he full heartedly wanted to go after something I wouldn’t be able to hold him back.

I have a very powerful GSD that used to dragged me across the road when she sees moving objects, and one trick really helped with the controlling and correction much better! Put the colar right below the jaw, use a slip color or a chain color - when we have control of the dog’s head you are in charger. When the dog pull, quickly tug the leash to remind the dog and get their attention away, at the same time, turn to the opposite direction. It’s going to be very tedious but trust me, your dog will quickly learn that pulling isn’t going to get him anywhere. Another thing is, exercise your dog before you bring him on the walk, 90% of behaviors problems come from a lack of exercise. If you don’t have a backyard, You can play fetch or toys with your dog at home for 20 mins before bringing the dog out for a walk. Lastly, don’t leave the door until your dog is calmly chilling/sitting by the doorway. With all these training, my dog is now PERFECT on walks and I hope these help!

I still prefer your method of training versus Beckman’s dog training, that man seems like he actually hates dogs and has such an anger in him when training. So glad that I found this trainer because you can tell that he hasn’t left for dogs a respect for dogs and has some really great insights.

I absolutely need this demonstrated WITHOUT treats!! My dog will not take treats - she will initially take the treat in her mouth but she'll drop it in a few seconds and just walk away. I NEED someone to provide a REAL alternative to treats. No one who teaches the treat-based training has a clue how to train a pup who has zero interest in food. Tho, I did have one trainer suggest no feeding of any kind until she starts obeying....I'm so desperate that I might actually go there.

The problem I’m facing with my whippet is that even at distance she gets so excited about seeing or smelling another god that she won’t even acknowledge treats (high value salmon/chicken). We’ve had her since the legal age to adopt and has been socialised plenty. She just wants play with all the dogs she sees (11 months old now). With other dogs she cannot be trusted to perform any commands, without dogs around she is great. We’ve been trying this technique for 6 months, yet the distance does not reduce, she switches into excited mode at a set distance and that has been it since. If she gets to meet 4-5 dogs on a long walk she won’t care about the 6th, not even enough to greet him. What else would you recommend. 11 months old female whippet

Other dogs are not so much of a problem in our case, we can call our 5 month old away in the middle of playing with other dogs and walk close to other dogs without her getting too distracted to listen to us. Our biggest challenge is ground scents. They are everywhere, they are invisible to us, and they are often more interesting to our hound than even the best treats. Any suggestions on how to help her stay focused on the training when she catches a whiff from the grass? I should add that the "leave it" works fine with stationary smells like where a dog has peed, but scent trails (from other animals, etc.) are a completely different beast. I've avoided using the "leave it" for these as she can easily find new tracks and self-reward. TIA!
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 года назад
Hi there, Emma! Using “leave it” consistently on stationary objects and in a controlled setting will ultimately result in a reliable response every time you ask for a “leave it”. Being consistent is the key though. No matter where you are, as long as you follow through with your leash if you aren’t getting the response you want. You can also follow up with a quick “leave it” so that you’re more likely to get a successful response and you’re able to reward. That way you’re not going from one distraction to the next without an opportunity to reward success! Happy Training! ~Ken

Do you have any advice for a dog that has been attacked by other dogs? I'm trying to desensitize my border collie. I want to bring her to the park and just sit with her there because of all of the stimulation. But my concern is that even though dogs are not supposed to be off-leash, they often are. So dogs sometimes run up to her, which is bad because of her reactivity. Would a temporary fence do the trick? Do you think there's value in sitting inside of a small enclosure with her at the park until her reactions start to fade?

I’m no expert by any means, but we go to a puppy social class, and this is what the trainers do for other pups that are behaving similar to what you are explaining. They put a gate around the dogs that are a bit hesitant/not sure/scared of the other dogs. They have the owner sit in the gate with them and Rifle treats if/when other dogs on the outside approach and there is a calm interaction. It builds some comfort. They also hear the other dogs playing etc, which builds a positive association with the stimulus of that, because they are getting treats and being told they are a good boy/girl
