I gave a chess lesson to @Myth_YT, a participant of the chess.com PogChamps 3. Hikaru gave a lesson to Pokimane recently and Myth is also participating. Myth is also signed to TSM like Hikaru. We covered beginner opening concepts and did a lesson on tactics and the thought process.

@@uditdhanda4693 intelligence is subjective. Guess this would be called critical thinking v memorization.
@frostypakki836
@frostypakki836 3 года назад
@@uditdhanda4693 Intelligence is not what makes a good chess player. It's simply how good they are at playing chess. One could teach the smartest person in the world that has not played chess basic rules and they would still lose to a 1000 rated player. Likewise, one could take a high school dropout and hone their chess abilities and allow them to play at a master level. Perhaps this hypothetical student merely trudged through school without trying, but the point is that even if one learned a skill (chess) and was good at it, doesnt mean it requires intelligence. By practicing a skill, you hone your ability to apply yourself to that particular skill. Let's use your own logic in your example about basketball. The ability to derive strategic positions to gain an advantage is also used in basketball through screens, cuts, and general formation. Not only these, the ability to fake out your opponent with weight shifts and feints also have to be taken into account. By your definition, basketball is also skill capped by intelligence. Furthermore, by your definition, even a game as simple as Connect 4 requires intelligent, as there is an existent strategy and often times a best move. While these do require thinking in their own rights, I prefer acknowledging them as their own respective skills and not "intelligence".

This was a fantastic first chess lesson. A great mix of demonstrating fundamental chess principles and asking the student questions/to make their own moves to get them involved and see/adjust their thought process, while also creating situations to introduce key concepts but still keeping the lesson focused and not overwhelming them with too much info. All while being encouraging, upbeat, and funny. The other Pogchamps coaches with less teaching experience could def learn from this. Also Myth helped by being such a good student.

45:54 I think myth was mostly seeing he could push up the f pawn, eventually threaten the bishop and then _maybe_ that would lead to an opening for his rook somehow along the f file. I'm not sure he necessarily saw a way to get any of his rooks to g6. Still a VERY nice move for someone's very first lesson. Even having the intuition to see that you can activate the rook without moving it is impressive.
@Bobstew68
@Bobstew68 3 года назад
I love how Levy explains stuff for the most part, but (and this goes for every chess teacher ever, not just Levy) why even say to beginners that kings are not allowed to put themselves in check? Or that a pinned pawn isn't allowed to move because it would put the king in check? Just say "if I do this, my king gets caught on the next move" even if that's not literally what the rules say. As long as it doesn't change the decision making process, it's better to have fewer rules to think about. Freeing up some mental space for your student matters both in the short term (because there's a lot of rules to think about in the beginning) and actually also in the longer term, because they're not building an unnecessarily cluttered mental structure. Future knowledge builds on existing knowledge, and if they have an unnecessarily cluttered understanding of how the pieces move, this adds some "weight" whenever they try to construct new knowledge building on that knowledge. For example, I'll guarantee you they'll be a little bit quicker to learn mating patterns if you drop the "allowed" rules. The worst thing that can happen is that they try to make a move that would put their king in check, get confused when the board won't let them, and then realize that oh, hold on, I would lose on the next move if I did that, I don't want to do it anyway.

I have a question. At 5:28, is Qa4+ a good move? I know Levy had just said that random checks aren't good, but it also attacks the unguarded bishop. They then have to respond with Nc6 (the other legal moves lose a bishop, but the knight guards it), but then if you play Bb5, pinning the knight, is that not winning material? If they break the pin by Bd7, or even a King move, Bxc6 wins a knight for free, right? If they take back with either the pawn or the bishop they blocked the pin with, then Qxa5 wins the bishop. Either way you're up a piece. Does this actually work, or am I missing something?
