Learn step by step how to teach your dog how to recognize two different objects by name. Naming Objects with clicker training.
This method can be used when teaching toy names, people, agility obstacles, service objects, assistance objects etc. Not sure what is up with the high tone of my voice when giving the cues, but at least I am consistent throughout the video! That's what so great about videotaping yourself-you see things you otherwise don't see!
Since I made this video, I have received comments from other trainers with experience in teaching object recognition. I have added their suggestions in boxes as the video plays out. Be very patient with your dog as it It can take as many as 2000 repetitions for a dog to learn the name of an object since using words as nouns does not come naturally to dogs. Keep your training sessions short and fun! It takes alot of concentration to learn this concept.

@sassywheels Yes, use the word "Yes" instead as a behavior marker.

Wow! This is GREAT! I'm training a mobility/balance dog, and I sometimes need her to pick up objects I drop. So far, I've been using the generic term "Get it!" and pointing, but if there is other stuff close by, she can get confused. Teaching her "bottle", "keys", "wallet", etc. would be so much more useful and this video explains it VERY well. THANKS!

@supernaturalbc2009 How do I get my dog to tap it? I know where she was trained they used treats as a reward.

Can this also be taught without using the clicker?

I got to the point where I have both objects in front of the dog, and if I point, he picks the right one. But if I don't point, he doesn't even try to get it right and just touches both in rapid succession because he knows that one of them is the right one and he'll get the treat anyway. How am I supposed to discourage him from doing this?

If he choose incorrectly there is no reward. Reset the game by getting him to go back to the starting point and do a new trial.

Teach her how to tap yourhand first, similar to shake a paw. Here's another video that sort of shows how to do it. You can also capture a foot tap on a margarine lid first, then hold the lid on the object. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6mQrS6n4kJU.html

@supernaturalbc2009 Or you can cluck your tongue to mark it.
