Tear down and reassembly of the Datsun 280z 5-speed in my MGB

A number of years ago I upgraded my 1974 MGBGT Autocrosser from an overdrive transmission to the Rivergate 5-speed conversion using a Datsun 280z 5-speed transmission. I had rebuilt that transmission when we put the temporary used engine in. But, mysteriously there was a single snap ring left on the workbench. Since it shifted smoothly and didn’t make any odd noises, I figured it would be ok until I built my new engine later that year (of course that didn’t happen) and that left over snap ring has been in the back of my mind ever since. So now that we’ve pulled that engine to install the new performance rebuilt one, it was time to see if that missing snap ring might be the cause of the shimmering silver oil that came out of the transmission. So in this video, we go back to when the engine was out and we tear into the Datsun 280z 5-speed transmission to see where the “extra” snap ring from the last time was supposed to go and look for any excessive wear.

Good on you for having a go. I would not dream of tackling a car gearbox. I just had my Healey 3000 box and overdrive overhauled in london by specialist. I rebuild pre war Velocette gearboxes which is about ny limit. Best of luck with it.

I'm toying with the idea of an mx5 box in my B, though the original seems much better than it was since I fitted thackary washers on the gearstick retaining plate

Those washers ( and the correct stepped shank bolts) are important to the shifter feel on the original transmissions. Also the bushing at the bottom, on the shifter ball as the gear stick will vibrate and be sloppy without it.

@@mgbgtguy 👍mine was in bits when I got it so I didn't know about either the shanked bolts or the washers.

Did you find what was making the rotation in fifth and in reverse seem tight while you had it on the bench? ----- The next step was you had it all assembled in the case -- going through the gears --------- On the shaft you pointed out possibly a hot spot that you thought a bearing was spinning to leave some glitter in the oil ------- Did you have to replace the bearing? ------- Are these Datsun transmissions a -- direct bolt in? ---- Is it just the 280 ones that fit ---- Can the original driveline be used - or does it have to be modified or even changed out? ------- Thank you for sharing with us --- Hope you have a Good week ---- Rodney

This conversion is a kit sold by a company called Rivergate. It uses only the 280z non turbo transmission and has everything to swap it into an MGB. Back plate, modified MGB flywheel ( they need yours back as a core), drive shaft, slave cyl w/new braided stainless hose and a hydraulic adapter, clutch disc (uses original MGB pressure plate), speedo cable and ratio adapter, and small bits. You need to find your own transmission with throw out bearing, fork, trans mount and shifter. There is a company out there now making a T-5 kit as well as one doing a Miata transmission kit and one doing a Ford T-9 kit.

Well, it’s a kit that sold by a company called Rivergate, so it’s as easy as following the instructions. The hardest part these days is finding a good 280 Z transmission at a reasonable price without driving hundreds of miles to go get it.
