Teardrop trailer: classic 50's mobile micro-home renaissance

Teardrop trailers first became popular in the 1930s when Scientific American and Popular Mechanics published DIY plans. The idea was simple: a travel trailer small enough to accommodate plywood-only construction, so easy enough for any user to build.
The concept fell out of favor for a few decades, but has come back into fashion now that plans are easily accessible online. The layout is classic minimalism; the inside section is the bedroom and the kitchen (or galley) opens up out of the trunk.
There are also companies that build teardrops ready-made. Blogger Christina Nelleman-- The Tiny House Blog and Tiny Yellow Teardrop-- bought her bright yellow "Sunflower" trailer from Amish craftsman in Ohio. She fell in love with the design after searching for something her Dodge Neon could pull and an alternative to a tent for her 75-year-old mother (who asked to join her at Burning Man).
Christina and her husband became teardroppers 6 years ago and have since become so enamored with their tiny trailer that not only did she start a blog on the topic, but they are dreaming about retiring in one (and soon, she says her husband hopes to retire young, i.e in a few years).
Their teardrop is only 40 square feet (8 feet by 5 feet), but she thinks it's enough room (as long as you don't hit long stretches of bad weather) because the outdoors is the rest of your home.

My uncle traveled all over the States in one of the originals back in the 60's he bought it used in only fair condition and rebuilt it. He pulled it with a station wagon which gave him a fair amount of room to put stuff. I always liked it.

So true what she said: "How much space do you need? You have the entire outdoors"! and hey it´s better than a tent any day ;) At the end of day, it´s asking yourself what we value most in our lives, the material stuff or nature/ outdoors etc

Had I not lost the ability to drive 20+ years ago due to disability, I'd so own one of these. A teardrop camper and a driverless car is a thing of dreams. I simply cannot imagine the freedom of the open road anymore. Being able to just get in a car with my dog and driving off to some remote state campground is something I hope my future self is able to enjoy. The day that future ceases to exist in my mind is the day I've truly given up.

BEST TEARDROP VID EVER! ..very helpful and your philosophy has inspired us to live the life full time! ..we have had 2 major extended tenting expeditions: one odyssey was a fully loaded cross-country bicycle touring adventure from campground to campground, often free-camping or boondocking, ..and another trip with our tiny Honda Civic with our bikes, kayaks and backpacking tools aboard.. that adventure was a birding/home searching 5 month trip.. This 'teardrop trailer' style of living is a perfect transition for us as we consider this for our retirement plans... Thanks, again, for the great info!

Love your video. I purchased a "Little Guy" here in Australia and when we picked it up, the sales guy said we would not be left alone. He was right ! every place we stop we have other campers come over, ask heaps of questions about our camper. We love it and cant think of any thing that is better for out needs. Camping is about simple living and enjoying the outdoors. We have spent weeks travelling around our country and have never regreted purchasing our camper. Warm in winter and amazingly cool in our hot summers thanks to the excellent build quality. Very well insulated. We tow it with our Toyota Corolla, only 1800 cc ! We have never had a problem getting up hills and fuel economy is hardly compromised given the teardrop weighs only 350 kg including all our stuff and 2 fold up bikes !!! I could rave on for hours about how much I love this "little Guy" and ..... its made in the USA !!!!

Thanks for the video. I have looked at these campers numerous times and thought what a great idea to take with on a trip instead of spending the money to stay at a motel. I am sure my wife would not be too keen about it but there are spots across the US where you could park something like this at.

+Hot Sauce not really old school "campers" used mules and horses to carry larger loads than a pack ever could (sometimes multiple animals at a time) the idea of backpacking is a relatively new invention in human history (only dating back to the 1700s) carrying your shit on your back isn't new..but that was a necessity not a recreational event so no..it's still camping if you can park a vehicle there backpacking and camping are two separate recreational activities (though backpacking almost always includes camping)
@spookiewon
@spookiewon 8 лет назад
+Hot Sauce Sometimes you have to be realistic. I'd have agreed with you 25 years ago. Now I'm physically disabled and have cancer. You'd deny me camping because of that? Well, then, fuck you. We do what we have to. My teardrop (home built) and my maxi scooter let me continue to camp and motorcycle even with my limitations. So, go fuck yourself.

@death299

Hot Sauce camping started out with heavy equipment that made backpacking near impossible As i explained before theyw have been defined as two distinct outdoor activities for a long..long time It's the reason most of the better brands of camping tents and then "backpacking" tents (and general equipment..though some is just universal) He"s not trying to be treated equal He's saying you're denying him camping because you're an elitist that can't differentiate between backpacking and camping Even if we use the living harder thing as a measure exepeditions have always had it worse than backpackers (colder..less food...can't simply pack up and ho home..any injury often needs to be treated onsite or death) and almost always have used tools to help lug equipment around Or nomads..who lived moving with the game and seasons usually used horses or equipment such as the travois Backpacking is a very very new thing to humans So acting as a better to the style that has been around since the iron age is rather silly

Do it! Husband & I spent 4 months traveling USA & Canada in a 6'x10' teardrop. Loved it! Would occasionally go to motel for tv or bath tub, but loved looking out on nature. Because we were self contained w.o. a stinky noisy generator, we could camp in "tents only" areas and w.o. fear of severe rainstorms driving us out. We had 2x2 solar panels, air cond/htr for southern states in the summer (you'll need a hook-up). Install stick-on hooks for extra storage on the wall. (continued)

I'm planning to build a 5' X 8' or 10' teardrop in the near future. The thing that the teardrop has over tent camping is that it gets me up off the ground. Because of my age and joints, I have great difficulty getting up once I get on the ground. I'll use a tent when I have to, but don't look forward to it. I have started using the big stainless steel dog water dishes for my wash basins. They are light, durable and can be placed on the stove to heat the water.

Fantastic bedroom/diner/lounge on wheels. I honestly believe that you have to have a little bit of the gypsy in you to enjoy that style of camping. Having a huge Winnebago for camping is really like taking your home ( only smaller ) with you. There is more fun 'roughing it' and finding more depths in your personality depending on how well you fended for yourself. My wife and kids all loved the years of camping and log cabin style vacations as I had major neck and hip surgeries resulting in all sorts of problems and now having a more sedentary lifestyle, which is heartbreaking for my wife and I ( most of the kids have flown the coop ) as we so enjoyed the camping lifestyles

I came across this great video as I am doing some research before I buy or build a teardrop myself. One safety issue caught my eye. It is something that seems fairly common among tear drop trailers. Many have the unprotected battery sitting in a cupboard in the galley. Often with metal utensils sharing the space. There is quite a lot of energy stored in a battery. If the terminals get shorted there could be a very big bang, or your pride and joy could burn to the ground. Something to watch.

This goes to show that people who forego materialism CAN be happy. As for myself, I own very little in the way of material things. Right now, I live in a 33 foot travel trailer, and frankly, it's about twice as big as I need, so something a little bigger than the trailer in this video would be just about right for myself and my pets.

Great idea and much inspirational, Kirsten. A few months ago I got an chance to live for a short time in a hostel full of people and all that I had of value was the bed that I slumbered and I've perceived since then I need lesser than I've got currently. Downsize the housings aren't live worse, it's much like retrieving a sense of preservation and respect.

I'm a member of TearJerkers, and one of my fellow campers answers that age-old question teardroppers always get asked: "Where do you sleep?" He opens the door and points inside and says "That's my bedroom." He points to the galley in back and says "There's my kitchen." Then he sweeps his hand around the surrounding nature and says, "Ant THIS is my living room."
